Apport collection however crashes after that, due to bug 35004 which only has
been fixed in Karmic.
This now happens with 2.6.28-13-generic, on Jaunty, running
xserver-xorg-video-ati 1:6.12.1-0ubuntu2.

2009-02-22 Thread maleadt
It took me some weeks, but I have now triggered this lockup with
bleeding-edge xorg (xorg-edgers's ppa) and xserver-xorg-video-ati
(tormod volden's ppa). Also discard the comment from 2009-01-02, as that
partial lockup (xorg complaining about stuck server, but still remaining
responsive) does not seem to be related. The lockup I am talking about
right now, is the same as described in the bug report and most of my
comments; a lockup in which case only the mouse moves, but the xserver
doesn't respond on any action at all.

Regarding the various comments about mouse/keybord possibly causing the
problem when being connected through usb: this does not seem to be
related to this lockup, as both my mouse and keyboard now were connected
over PS/2 (through an USB->PS/2 connector, but this shouldn't matter).

Apart from confirming this lockup with updated drivers, I can also
confirm it with a fully updated Intrepid Ibex. I triggered the bug
fairly quickly after having Ubuntu reinstalled and updated.

I don't have the time to test Jaunty right now, but I might test it
later on.

Xorg log included, backtrace included with xorg & xserver-xorg-video-ati
from ppa's.

After running Fedora for a while and having returned to Ubuntu now, I
cannot reproduce this bug. It might be corelated with having upgraded to
a newer xserver-xorg-ati (using Tormod Volden's PPA), which I did _not_
do this time.

However, as the bug still appears to some users, this bug report remains
valid (IMHO).

I will report back when having upgraded to a newer -ati driver, but this
might take some time as I'm using the stock driver now in order to
trigger some other bug.

I am using Ubuntu again for two weeks now, and have only once triggered

nicely.

I have however changed my hardware layout a bit (PS2 mouse to USB
mouse), which I'll try to replace for a week in order to have exactly
the same situation as I had two months ago.

[Bug 312396] Re: Nautilus opens files over SSH as read-only when not owner.

2009-03-11 Thread maleadt
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 229270 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/229270

Please remove the duplicate tag. Bug 229270 has been fixed recently (using
Jaunty), but the gedit-over-SSH issue has not been resolved: if the user
doesn't match directly, gedit opens the file as read-only though write
permissions are assured.
Happens to nautilus too: unable to create a new file/folder in folders of which
the user doesn't match directly, but write permissions are certainly available.

Hi shemgp, and thanks for your effort writing this patch. It doesn't solve the

I used the deb at your ppa (amd64).

Almost good: the host gets stripped correctly, but doesnt connect to the right

"ssh u...@foo.no-ip.bar -p 22 -t cd '/folder' && $SHELL -l"

Re: [Bug 276518] Re: Xorg hangs due to EQ overflowing

2008-12-01 Thread maleadt
I have tested the newer -ati driver plus newer X server (from your ppa)
for a full week, and did not experience a single crash. Right now I
cannot revert to the old driver, as I have for the moment switched to
Fedora 10. However, on Fedora I haven't experienced such a crash either,
using Xserver 1.5.3 and xf86-video-ati 6.9.0-54 (which seems to be the
git master from 16/10 with a whole bunch of KMS patches).

I'd want to reinstall Ubuntu for a while on a spare partition, but the
problem is I only triggered the bug after working on it for some days.

2008-11-25 Thread maleadt
Sadly / Luckily, no. Having installed the Xorg with backtrace
modification, I'm carefully monitoring my system for possibly related
events.

Note though I have also upgraded xf86-video-ati to a newer version,
which I found on the following PPA:
http://ppa.launchpad.net/tormodvolden/ubuntu/ . This might not have been
the smartest thing to obtain a backtrace, as I haven't encountered any
EQ overflow ever since (and thus it have fixed the original
issue).

Bryce Harrington: I will continue to analyse every X crash which occurs,

failure, as the ATI card I'm using is brand new (replacement model). I

[Bug 276518] Re: Xorg hangs due to EQ overflowing

2008-11-13 Thread maleadt
Lockups have returned in here, I'm installing the Xserver with backtrace
mod now.

I'm still wondering though why the kernel doesn't accept the magic
REISUB keystroke anymore. My keyboard is an USB one, connected to PS2
through a convertor.

[Bug 279122] Re: rhythmbox crashed with SIGSEGV during playback

2008-10-27 Thread maleadt
Totally forgot about this bug. Excuse me.

I tried to trigger this bug again so I could trace the crash, but now
Rhythmbox doesn't crash anymore. The problem is still there though, as
when rhythmbox would crash one month ago, it now just keeps on playing,
uncontrollable.

Example:
- Open big MP3 1
- Seek from position A to position B (repeat until bug is triggered)
-> The music keeps on playing from point A, so seeking didn't have any effect
- Seek from position B to position C
-> The music still keeps on playing from point A
- Open music file 2
-> Music from file 1 still keeps on playing from point A, mangled together with
the music from file 2

How can I debug this? I think it's related with what originally
triggered the crash, so I posted in the same thread.

Fair enough, as it has been a while since I came across the EQ
overflowing issue and I haven't been able to find what causes it.

[Bug 276518] [NEW] Xorg hangs due to EQ overflowing

2008-09-30 Thread maleadt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg

After working a while, the Xserver sometimes hangs with following errors
spammed in the Xorg.log:
[mi] EQ overflowing. The server is probably stuck in an infinite loop.
[mi] mieqEnequeue: out-of-order valuator event; dropping.

When such an error occurs, my music just keeps on playing, the mouse
moves too, but all other activity is prohibited. I need to disconnect my
PS2 keyboard (due to unresponsive), connect it to the USB port, and
execute the magic SEIUB keystrokes to safely reboot.

The error has been reported by other people at the ubuntu fora:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=5875714

System details:
Ubuntu Intrepid, fully updated

ii xserver-xorg-video-ati
1:6.9.0+git20080826.a3cc1d7a-2ubuntu3 X.Org X server -- ATI display driver
wrapper

No .crash file is generated, as the xserver doesn't crashes, but only
loops at a certain level.

[Bug 276524] [NEW] VLC misses the extvlcopt option

2008-09-30 Thread maleadt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: vlc

When parsing certain playlist files (M3U), VLC will refuse to execute
certain options as they are considered dangerous. This option (--m3u-
extvlcopt) has been introduced in vlc 0.8.6f.

Now VLC got updated to 0.9, this option seems to be missing. An example of an
"dangerous" playlist:
#EXTM3U
#EXTINF:-1,BBC ONE
#EXTVLCOPT:pvr-device=/dev/video1
#EXTVLCOPT:pvr-frequency=399250
pvr://

When trying to open such a file, you'll see:
[0422] main input error: unsafe option "pvr-device" has been ignored for
security reasons
[0422] main input error: unsafe option "pvr-frequency" has been ignored for
security reasons

Adding the needed option however, results in:
vlc: unknown option or missing mandatory argument `--m3u-extvlcopt'

Some reports by other users:

http://reader.feedshow.com/show_items-feed=1936661e8b6fafa5c7e41479a1607da3?page=1

[Bug 270523] Re: Rhythmbox fails at starting playback on doubleclick / argument passing

2008-10-01 Thread maleadt
Bug #179110 talks about auto playback at rhythmbox start, I don't think
that is the same as this bug?

Anyhow, thanks for the hint, as I have been able to find out more about
the problem. It seems that trying to play a file (through command-line
options) which does not reside in my library results in (a) nothing, or
(b) playback of the currently selected album in the "Music" tab. The
same test with a file listed in my library, results in correct playback.
So it depends whether the file I want to play, is already in my library,
or not. As I mostly double-click on new files, this bug gets triggered
quite frequently.

[Bug 270523] Re: Rhythmbox fails at starting playback on doubleclick / argument passing

2008-10-02 Thread maleadt
David Prieto writes that "rhythmbox /path/to/file" works as long as the
file is not in the library. I experience the contrary, "rhythmbox
/path/to/file" does not work as long as "file" is not indexed. This is
not a missing feature, but a defect! "rhythmbox /path/to/file" should
work for any file, not only files indexed in the library.

I confirm this bug on a fresh Intrepid Alpha 5. Installing the freedesktop

[Bug 269357] [NEW] Video playback failes with compiz enabled

2008-09-12 Thread maleadt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-radeon

Video playbacks fails on the included radeon driver, when compiz is enabled.
This is caused by the the XAA accelerator, which is used when compiz is
enabled. That accelerator does not support a mechanism to migrate pixmaps from
system ram to vram [1], which makes video playback fail with the following
errors:
X11 error: BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)

Using the new EXA accelerator instead of the old XAA one [2], makes
video playback possible. This accelerator should be the default one when
using the radeon driver, as having to disable 3D effects when you want
to play video is HIGHLY annoying, especially when Compiz is enabled by
default.

The Xorg option to force EXA:

Isn't a full strace & valgrind log enough to debug the crash?

[Bug 269388] [NEW] Xorg eats CPU when using EXA

2008-09-12 Thread maleadt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

Since the last batch of updates (where all the xorg video drivers got
updated), I'm experiencing lagspikes in my ubuntu environment. I've
traced this back to Xorg using up to 97% CPU on certain moments. This
only happens when I'm using the EXA acceleration method, instead of the
default XAA one.

With the default XAA, all works very smoothly. But now, with EXA
enabled, Xorg often spikes to 100% CPU, mainly when opening
applications, scrolling or opening textfiles, or spawning new GTK
widgets.

I'm using the EXA acceleration to be able to playback video when using
Compiz. I've also filed a bug to use EXA as default accelerator:

[Bug 269508] [NEW] SQL errors upon mail sending

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

When sending a mail, the outbox gets marked with an "(1)" indicating
there is one new message in it. When the mails gets sent, this indicator
disappears. But when I run evolution from the console, I see some SQL

The errors i'm speaking about:

[Bug 269890] [NEW] Compiz fails to draw shadows after suspend

2008-09-13 Thread maleadt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

After having resumed from suspended state (e.g. hibernate), Compiz'
shadows don't work well anymore. All shadows are replaced with a white
block with sometimes lines in it (the corners have additional
artifacts). When I re-apply a theme, the artifacts disappear and the
transparant shadows are displayed correctly again.

[Bug 269508] Re: SQL errors upon mail sending

2008-09-15 Thread maleadt
It's a fresh install, but I did import mails and settings through the
backup plugin (exported and imported it through the item in menu File).
But I did not re-use the .evolution folder + gnome-settings.

For the rest Evolution works fine, were it not that it is right now
crashing due to bug 269370 :) could they be related, e.g. database
corruption causing evolution to crash? As soon as I get the other
problem solved / fixed by update, I'll try to this scenario on another
user profile.

[Bug 269656] Re: AN IRRELEVANT LICENSE IS PRESENTED TO YOU FREE-OF-CHARGE ON STARTUP

2008-09-15 Thread maleadt
I mainly use and love open-source initiatives because of two reasons:
1) it's flexible, and very user-adjustable;
2) if you want a complete and usable system, you don't have to look your back
thanks to the thousands of agreements you had to work through.

Now I know some pieces of software which can be installed in Ubuntu do
have certain agreements bound to them (Adobe's Flash, for example), but
exactly those agreements and restrictiveness prevent those packages to
residue in the "main" archive and/or be installed together with ubuntu-
desktop. Every user has to decide himself whether he wants to use a non-
free (or less-free) piece of software, and install that manually.

Equally so, I'd myself prefer Firefox not to be installed by default,
but again after the user has manually decided to, so you have no EULA-
hassle when installing a default system. Switching to IceWeasel (or
rebranding it to "Ubuntu web browser", for the sake of user-
friendliness) is IMHO the best option in this discussion.

[Bug 270591] [NEW] tracker-search-tool fails to open search results

2008-09-15 Thread maleadt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: tracker-search-tool

When I open tracker-search-tool (from the command line, by clicking the
tracker icon, or by pressing the Search key on my multimedia keyboard)
and look for a specific string, the GUI fails to open the results. It
doesn't matter whether I double click the result, or right click them
and select "Open".

The terminals reveals the following error:
Er is een fout opgetreden bij het tonen van url: Er is geen standaardactie
geassocieerd met deze locatie.
Translated: cannot open the file, as there is no program associated with it.

A trace log indicates that tracker-search-tool parses
"/usr/share/applications/defaults.list", but doesn't find a match which
causes it not to know what application it should call to open the file.

(Shouldn't it be using gnome-open ?)

[Bug 217319] Re: [bug] cannot open search results of tracker-search-tool

2008-09-15 Thread maleadt
Good suggestion, I've moved the relevant data to bug 270591. Could a
moderator / person with elevated rights please remove this and last
three comments of mine, as mixing 2 bugs is indeed confusing.

The fact that the bug is fixed in Intrepid is good though. I guess the
relevant commit should be moved into an update for Hardy?

** Description changed:

- The bug has changed: tracker-search-tool is unable to open ANY search result
due to an association problem.
- I have described the bug more detailled in the 4th comment
-
-
-
- --- OLD BUG, DOES NOT APPLY ANYMORE ---
-
When I open the tracker search tool by the command line ("tracker-
search-tool") or by clicking the trackerd icon in the system tray, I get
a searching dialog in which I can search for files/folders, and open
them on doubleclick. This works flawlessly.

When I open the tracker search tool by pressing the "Search" media
button on my multimedia keyboard, the application still gets opened, and
I can still search for a query and acquire identical results, but I
cannot open them anyway (not by double clicking, not by right clicking
and selecting "Open File" or "Open Folder").

I am running tracker and tracker-search-tool 0.6.6-ubuntu3 in combination
with a fully updated Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron on kernel 2.6.24-16.
The shortcut of the Search media button (0xe5) is properly linked with the
Search action of gnome-keybinding-properties 2.22.1

I did not know for sure wether this bug is caused by tracker-search-tool
or by gnome-keybindings-properties, so I assigned it to tracker-search-
tool as it's there where the bug gets to the surface.

[Bug 200353] Re: The Ubuntu dbgsym package list is unsigned

2008-09-15 Thread maleadt
Confirmed, I just installed the key I found at the root of
ddebs.ubuntu.com (dbgsym-release-key.asc) but the packages doesn't seem
to be signed...

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo apt-key list
/etc/apt/trusted.gpg

pub 1024D/428D7C01 2008-09-02
uid Ubuntu Debug Symbol Archive Automatic Signing Key <[EMAIL
PROTECTED]>

[Bug 269508] Re: SQL errors upon mail sending

2008-09-15 Thread maleadt
This doesn't seem to be a migration/corruption problem after all, as
creating a fresh test user and sending a mail results in exactly the
same error (actually I forgot to mention a preceding message in the bug
report: "Saving 1/1 dirty records of Sent").

Also, when creating a new user profile, I saw some similar SQL errors
passing by. I'll append both logs to this bug report.

[Bug 269388] Re: Xorg eats CPU when using EXA

2008-09-17 Thread maleadt
Just removed xserver-xorg-video-radeon et al and pulled a GIT copy to try to
locate the commit which introduced the bug.
I reverted all the way to june 2008, but the EXA lags keeps happening. As I
worked with a non-lagging EXA using the xserver-xorg-video-radeon-git20080802,
I guess the EXA lag is NOT caused by xorg-video-radeon.

Any hints how to locate this bug?

[Bug 270523] Re: Rhythmbox not parsing command-line arguments properly

2008-09-17 Thread maleadt
Intrepid, but got the bug at Hardy too.

And what do you mean with the consistency? The bug triggers sometimes
(most of the times a double click just launches rhythmbox, and sometimes
the file actually starts playing), and is consistent with other media
files (files without spaces etc too).

So in fact I'd rather think (after having a second look at the strace
log) that rhythmbox does fail at starting playback for the song, rather
than parsing the command-line arguments.

** Summary changed:

- Rhythmbox not parsing command-line arguments properly
+ Rhythmbox fails at starting playback on doubleclick / argument passing

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Rhythmbox doesn't always react properly when trying to open a file by
- passing it as an argument.
+ passing it as an argument (or by double-clicking a media file, which in
+ fact works the same way).

  Example file:
  [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/Bureaublad$ file "2 Many Dj's & Soulwax @ StuBru
08-09-2008.mp3"
  2 Many Dj's & Soulwax @ StuBru 08-09-2008.mp3: MPEG ADTS, layer III, v1, 96
kbps, 44.1 kHz, JntStereo

- Argument passing1:
+ Used command:
  [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/Bureaublad$ rhythmbox "2 Many Dj's & Soulwax @ StuBru
08-09-2008.mp3"
  OR
  [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/Bureaublad$ rhythmbox 2\ Many\ Dj\'s\ \&\ Soulwax\ @\
StuBru\ 08-09-2008.mp3

Result: most of the times (80% of all cases), the file does NOT start
playing, it doesn't even get queued up.
This h is highly annoying as a double-click action on any media files results
in argument passing as described. So I cannot play files in rhythmbox by
double-clicking on them!

- Rhythmbox debug log added.
+ The log included is a rhythmbox debug log when a file gets passed to
+ rhythmbox, but playback does not start. A close look indicates that
+ rhythmbox does in fact properly parse the given arguments, but fails at
+ starting playback.
