Daniel, yes, this is the same crash as in bug 1787512. It's not a duplicate IMO, since I'd researched the exact repro steps. Any developer can trigger the crash now, by following the repro steps. [Bug 1844354] Re: Starting indicator-multiload (with peculiar config) crashes gnome-shell
Please NOTE: the report is against gnome-shell, NOT indicator-multiload! It's not so important to fix the indicator app. Rather, gnome-shell needs to become sturdier. There's a change to be made to gnome-shell so that it perseveres assertion failures and keeps running. Lurking around, I've seen plentiful variations of gnome-shell assertion- crashing posted, with varying backtraces. I've also personally witnessed, on multiple occasions, "Ubuntu dying" as they say, with very similar symptoms and the exact same workaround, mv ~/.config{,.bugz}. Mind that, in each of that crash story, reported and not, we've caused suffering and disappointment in hundreds of people. The data is there at errors.ubuntu.com waiting for you to check out. Now that I've spent a day unearthing a concrete working reproducer, can I expect a *PROPER FIX* for this disaster, not just a measly patch-over as dozens of bugs before? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1844354 Title: Starting indicator-multiload (with peculiar config) crashes gnome- shell To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/1844354/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

@vanvugt hi! Nice triage, appreciated. [Bug 1391620] [NEW] Regression in wireshark DOCSIS packet dissectors
Public bug reported: I have a bunch of .pcapng captures of a specific type of L2TP traffic. Mostly, it is DEPI control plane; see the Downstream External PHY Interface specification by CableLabs [CM-SP-DEPI]. The protocol is an extension of L2TP [RFC3931] and so uses a bunch of VendorID-scoped AVP extensions. Their parsing has been broken in Wireshark 1.10.6 in Ubuntu. I don't remember which version had this working correctly, but it did. Upon viewing my captures I was able to see dissections of AVPs with vendorID=0x118b and registered type codes. Now I am not. Furthermore, parsing of plain IETF AVPs which follow vendor-specific ones is garbled by incorrect parsing of the latter. To make it clear, EXPECTED BEHAVIOR: CableLabs AVPs defined in [CM-SP-DEPI] as L2TP vendor extensions are loaded (from capture files), parsed, dissected and displayed correctly as before; ACTUAL BEHAVIOR: Parsing errors in multiple packets, [Malformed Packet] tags on packets which are actually well-formed, parsing exceptions and incorrect interpretation of packet data. I'm going to attach sample data to test and verify this. This is just 3 frames of a tunnel establishment, SCCRQ-SCCRP-SCCCN. Let me also give a verbal explanation of what is wrong in this specific case. In the dissection of frame 2 we're going to see this. [Malformed Packet: L2TP] [Expert Info (Error/Malformed): Malformed Packet (Exception occurred)] [Message: Malformed Packet (Exception occurred)] [Severity level: Error] [Group: Malformed] You can tell that this doesn't correspond to truth (i.e. the dissector just simply crashed there) from several facts: 1) the 10.80.12.10 peer was satisfied with the frame and has replied to it (doing so in compliance with the spec); 2) the bytes are perfectly fine when parsed by hand. A CableLabs AVP starts at offset 0x72: 80 08 11 8b 00 c8 00 01. Its length is 8, and its length field is 8, too. 00c8₁₆ = 200₁₀, CableLabs AVP 200 is defined in section 7.5.4.1 of [CM-SP-DEPI], encodes DEPI Redundancy Capabilities and is specified to have length 8. This AVP is then immediately followed by another L2TP AVP 2 (vendorID = 0, attribute type = 2) of length 8, which is the last AVP and the end of the frame. 3) Wireshark skips the dissection of the last AVP in that frame and displays an error instead. There are also horrible errors in parsing of ICRP messages in my captures which didn't appear before. They appear to be caused by incorrect seeking over vendor AVPs. Unfortunately, the captures are confidential and it's not easy to cleanup them for publishing. However, I suppose that fixing the dissector crash above will fix them, too. An example of correct (albeit incomplete) parsing of a vendor AVP is the last AVP of frame 1, starting at offset 0x00c8, length 10, vendorID 9 (Cisco), type 115. The absence of interpretation of some vendor AVP contents is *NOT* what I'm reporting here. This AVP is good. [Bug 1072518] Re: Restarting network crashes (apparently) the desktop manager
Hi thread. Sebastien, personally, I attempted to use that command several times already with the intent to reset my networking subsystem state. Because of some other bug, my system stops resolving hostnames at some point, and redoing the connection is the easiest way to make network operational again. And oftentimes, the simple CLI command is more accessible than half a dosen clicks. In short: I want to `restart networking` simply because I've restarted each and every service out there, and it was always fine. At least, it never ended up in any loss of my working data. As a bonus, `restart ` restarted *only* the service requested, not the whole desktop session. So, either the manual invokation of `/etc/init.d/networking restart` should require an interactive confirmation (with appropriate warnings about data loss), or even reject the command altogether. Or alternatively, if the `networking` service doesn't represent the networking subsystem itself, then it should be renamed. Or, if it does, then the question shall be answered: what's the bloody business networking subsystem has to do with DBus system bus? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1072518 Title: Restarting network crashes (apparently) the desktop manager To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1072518/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 619913] Re: open should be an alias to xdg-open
I have to bump this again. Personallly, I've been using bash alias open=xdg-open for years. It's EXTREMELY useful and convenient. And I do really want to stress that: even though I generally avoid non-standard aliases for the command line (just so that my habits won't depend too much on a widely unavailable setup) — still, I can't work without just two aliases; one of them is open=xdg-open. I state that *twice* as long name is unacceptably long for the ubiquitously common action of "opening" (think: double-clicking) a file or directory. Users regularly want to open files and dirs. But personally I don't care about fancy Freedesktop shims taking my time for typing meaningless barely comprehensible characters, or for setting up the alias in the few-hundredth time again. On the other hand, opening a new text-mode VT is... uhh... extremely uncommon need in the environment of a graphical desktop, I'd say. Especially when we do already have a bunch of ones pre-opened by getty. Also, the name isn't covered by fundamental standards akin to POSIX, even the manpage says "Earlier, openvt was called open"; so the change is not going to break compatibility from that side. I will also go as far as to request concrete examples of automated software which actually opens interactive terminal sessions using openvt(1), and relying on the spelling of "open". Overall, the compatibility argument doesn't convice me a tiniest bit, again personally. I don't see a huge tradeoff in accepting the miniscule risks of the namespace change VS massive productivity gains for the proper, convenient, and requested use of the name. To summarize, my opinion is that some future-oriented revision for the use of "open" command needs a great deal of more discussion. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/619913 Title: open should be an alias to xdg-open To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xdg-utils/+bug/619913/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 614664] Re: Guake preferences dialog too large for netbook screens
Did you know that you can move any window by dragging it with a special key held? That key is by default Alt, and you don't need to start drag on the title bar - any point of the window works.
