[Bug 1813873] Re: Userspace break as a result of missing patch backport
Thanks for the link Guilherme, guess that answers that question. Given March 4 is just round the corner, I am not sure there is much can be done at this point, but I will however just echo what Tom beat me to saying: As a software developer I fully understand and recognise the need to delay things for various reasons even if it may seem everything is primed and ready to go. That being said I think the overall response time here has not been great at all. A kernel regression which breaks user space programs (including the default TTY login), and has a small, tested patch available should absolutely not take 3-4 weeks to be released. I understand that this new March 4 release will have additional unrelated patches that need that testing time, but I think breaking from the standard SRU cycle to either revert the problematic patches, or apply the fix would absolutely have been worth it - just look at the 13 duplicates of this bug and the posts on various other web forums / support sites. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1813873 Title: Userspace break as a result of missing patch backport To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1813873/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Right, the fixed kernel mentioned in -proposed is NOT the 4.15 HWE kernel, it's the 4.4.0 kernel. [Bug 1813873] Re: Userspace break as a result of missing patch backport
Putatieve, Seems like you have the bionic HWE installed, so that is why your server is defaulting to 4.15. Your apt log shows 4.4 downloading so you should be able to manually boot into it from grub... [Bug 1813873] [NEW] Userspace break as a result of missing patch backport
Public bug reported: Hi, The most recent set of Ubuntu kernels applied a variety of tty patches including: https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/c96cf923a98d1b094df9f0cf97a83e118817e31b But have not applied the more recent https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/d3736d82e8169768218ee0ef68718875918091a0 patch. This second patch is required to prevent a rather serious regression where userspace applications reading from stdin can receive EAGAIN when they should not. I will try to link correspondence from the mailing list archives once they are available, but for now if you have access to the linux-console mailing list you can find discussion under the thread "Userspace break? read from STDIN returns EAGAIN if tty is "touched"". I would appreciate it if this could be examined soon as it is a regression on userspace. [Bug 1729558] Re: [regression] In Java apps like Netbeans, dark menu bars don't look good for disabled elements
Ok Turns out Java has some super funky code: int componentState = context.getComponentState(); if ((componentState & SynthConstants.DISABLED) == SynthConstants.DISABLED){ if (!GTKLookAndFeel.is3()) { Color orgColor = g.getColor(); g.setColor(context.getStyle().getColor(context, GTKColorType.WHITE)); x += 1; y += 1; super.paintText(context, g, text, x, y, mnemonicIndex); g.setColor(orgColor); x -= 1; y -= 1; } super.paintText(context, g, text, x, y, mnemonicIndex); } Removing this silly +1 white shadowing nonsense results in perfect looking menus both when dark and light. [Bug 1729558] Re: [regression] In Java apps like Netbeans, dark menu bars don't look good for disabled elements
Java looks to be using the disabled foreground colour correctly (to me, the untrained observer): gtk2_widget = gtk2_get_widget(widget_type); GtkStyle* style = gtk2_widget->style; switch (color_type) { case FOREGROUND: color = &(style->fg[state_type]); break; Worth noting using GTK3 breaks other things, but actually fixes this bug (but that could simply point to an issue with Java's GTK2 code). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1729558 Title: [regression] In Java apps like Netbeans, dark menu bars don't look good for disabled elements To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-themes/+bug/1729558/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1729558] Re: [regression] In Java apps like Netbeans, dark menu bars don't look good for disabled elements
Java isn’t hardcoding them, it’s pulling them from GTK. There is the possibility that it’s pulling the wrong type of element colour (sorry not sure about terminology). I guess the test is to find a GTK 2 app with disabled menu elements that previously had a white menu which is now black wih this patch. I did make a test Java Swing app and the disabled elements looked bad, so it’s not constrained to Netbeans at least.

[Bug 1729558] [NEW] Fix for #961679 - dark menu bars doesn't look good for disabled elements
Public bug reported: This fix, #961679, specifically Ambiance/gtk-2.0/gtkrc:346 (http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-art-pkg/ubuntu- themes/trunk/revision/583), makes disabled elements in menus look terrible. Unfortunately I'm not aware of an easy way to get screenshots of open menus, so hopefully these attached phone pictures of Netbeans are enough to illustrate the issue. As you can see it is hard to tell the difference between what is disabled and what isn't, and the disabled items look fuzzy (easier to observe on monitor). I really don't see the issue with lighter menus, but if they must stay dark then the readability / contrast of disabled items needs to be fixed. [Bug 1729257] [NEW] Terrible Font Selection / Rendering on Artful
Public bug reported: Not sure of the correct description of the problem, but the fonts on Artful are very difficult to read, they appear blurry and too large (aliasing and scaling issues maybe?). This is especially a problem on menus, but since it is hard to get a screenshot of that I have just included a Swing text area. Both are on clean installations with just openjdk-8-jdk installed, and it is quite apparent to me that the text on Zesty is better. This also affects openjdk-9-jdk on Artful, although I have not tried that package on Zesty. Happy to help debug, but I'm not sure where to begin, fc-match shows DejaVu Sans / Serif on both installs. Worth noting that the Oracle JDKs look better, but they package Lucida font and their own renderer. [Bug 1382909] Re: Dell XPS 15Z Requires Kernel Parameters to Boot Correctly
Sorry Chris, Fix CommittedFixed, but not available until next release. made it sound like the upstream commit had been made and would fix the issue once 3.18 was merged in 15.04. With regards to the bisect I can say with certainty it is one of these: https://lkml.org/lkml/2014/10/6/515 Is there any merit to me narrowing down a more specific commit? The following commit resolves this issue: https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/0b8db271f1592e118feef7300f6da85bea9366da It applies cleanly to 3.17.1, backported from 3.18RC1. [Bug 1382909] Re: Dell XPS 15Z Requires Kernel Parameters to Boot Correctly
I am genuinely surprised. Despite 3.17 having worse issues (bugged display dimming as well), 3.18 RC1 appears to work fine without any paramaters at all: Linux XPS-15Z 3.18.0-031800rc1-generic #201410192135 SMP Mon Oct 20 01:37:04 UTC 2014 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux Looking forward to 15.04 I guess :) ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete = Fix Committed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1382909 Title: Dell XPS 15Z Requires Kernel Parameters to Boot Correctly To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1382909/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1382909] [NEW] Dell XPS 15Z Requires Kernel Parameters to Boot Correctly
Public bug reported: Filed at Chris P's request, this bug is still present on both the Ubuntu 14.04 kernel (3.13) as well as the latest mainline kernel (3.17). In addition the mainline kernel causes additional issues with regards to brightness control. I have used the boot param noapic to run Ubuntu on this laptop since 12.04, however acpi=off, acpi=noirq or acpi_backlight=vendor dell_laptop.backlight=0 all also fix the issue. Using the last option however causes poor brightness control as the dell backlight driver is not properly optimized.
