[Bug 777012] [NEW] unity immature in natty for dual-monitor setups

2011-05-04 Thread metastable
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

Let's not turn this into a rant.

I've encountered the following absolutely irritating problems with unity
since migrating to natty a few days ago. My system has 2 monitors
connected.

In no particular order of irritability:
1) The unity launcher dock stays visible at all times, thereby blocking the
application viewport
2) The unity launcher dock can only be made visible by mousing over one of the
monitor 'sides' (leftmost monitor left side)
3) The unity launcher dock folds halfway out, but folds in again without the
ability to click anything
4) Applications that have been moved to another monitor, have a screen line
less (see further)
5) The window menu does not appear (no close, minimize, maximize)

Problem number 4 seems to be caused by an incorrectly 'moved' window menu. This
is a problem that looks a lot like compiz in gnome2, where a window that is
opened on or moved to the secondary monitor, would only take fullscreen after a
double click on the application window. Before that, it looked like there was
room calculated for the gnome menu bar.
E.g. opening a mail in thunderbird, requires moving the mouse over the previous
e-mail (more or less) and clicking. The same applies to buttons etc. too of
course.

Despite my affection for gnome and the promising look of gnome 3, I can
somewhat follow how a mature unity would be very nice in use. Maturity is
lacking however.
This makes me feel like the olden days of bad and worse linux desktop
environments have returned.
In addition, it totally destroys productivity, which is annoying when, you
know, use a computer for work.

** Affects: unity (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 277924] Re: sysklogd cannot find map file

2009-07-17 Thread metastable
Same problem !

Jul 17 13:45:16 srv syslogd 1.5.0#5ubuntu3: restart.
Jul 17 13:45:16 srv kernel: Inspecting /boot/System.map-2.6.28-13-server
Jul 17 13:45:16 srv kernel: Cannot find map file.

The map file is present. This bug causes problems after issuing a
reboot. The server reboots, but hangs at the console. Typing 'exit' from
initramfs proceeds to a normal boot, but that isn't really a viable
solution, since the server is located somewhere else.

Linux: Linux srv.# 2.6.28-13-server #45-Ubuntu SMP Tue Jun 30 20:51:10
UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux
CPU: Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X3220 @ 2.40GHz
Storage: 01:00.0 SCSI storage controller: LSI Logic / Symbios Logic SAS1068E
PCI-Express Fusion-MPT SAS (rev 08)

[Bug 278176] Re: Intrepid ubuntu server won't boot RAID1

2009-07-17 Thread metastable
I don't have a RAID array on my server, but adding rootdelay works:
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.28-13-server
root=UUID=d1f6f883-efff-43cd-af15-110b79b02bce rootdelay=90 ro quiet splash

SYSTEM:
Ubuntu 9.04
Linux srv### 2.6.28-13-server #45-Ubuntu SMP Tue Jun 30 20:51:10 UTC
2009 i686 GNU/Linux
01:00.0 SCSI storage controller: LSI Logic / Symbios Logic SAS1068E PCI-Express
Fusion-MPT SAS (rev 08)

Best regards,
Stijn Verholen

[Bug 277924] Re: sysklogd cannot find map file

2009-07-17 Thread metastable
Thank you for the fast reply, Lars.
This is indeed a different bug, although I have no RAID:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/initramfs-tools/+bug/278176
Adding rootdelay=90 works for me.

/boot/grub/menu.lst:
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.28-13-server
root=UUID=d1f6f883-efff-43cd-af15-110b79b02bce rootdelay=90 ro quiet splash
