[Bug 1809407] Re: [nvidia] Corrupted wallpaper after resuming from suspend or hibernation

2020-07-27 Thread mistr
This bug is still present in a fresh install of Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS on a
Lenovo T510.

Nvidia driver is 340.108

The work-around mentioned in #73 is working.

[Bug 1756201] Re: xsane not aquiring images from Lide 30

2018-03-17 Thread mistr
I got xsane running by copying the content of /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-
gnu/sane from the old Ubuntu 14.04 (64 bit) installation to the same
location in my Ubuntu 17.10 (64 bit) install.

According to

  sane-config --version

the "old" libraries are from the release 1.0.23. (And the naming of the
files also suggests that.)

I then tried to compile sane from source according to
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/CompileSaneFromSource in the hope to
bisect the commit where this change happend:

sudo apt-get install libusb-dev build-essential libsane-dev
sudo apt-get install libavahi-client-dev libavahi-glib-dev

git clone git://git.debian.org/sane/sane-backends.git

./configure --prefix=/usr --libdir=/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu --sysconfdir=/etc
--localstatedir=/var --enable-avahi
make
sudo make install

After each install I rebooted the machine in order to flush any cached
libraries from memory.

This first attempt did not work. (Same error as described above).

I then tried the various newer releases and one older one (1.0.22):

git checkout RELEASE_1_0_xx

configure, make, make install, reboot, test.

However, all of those fail.

The only version that works every time is the one I've copied from
Ubuntu 14.04.

At this point I don't know how to proceed.

[Bug 1756201] [NEW] xsane not aquiring images from Lide 30

2018-03-15 Thread mistr
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 17.10, xsane 0.999

During the "searching for devices" phase I can hear the "usual" tick from the
scanner.

When I try to scan the error "Failed to start scanner: Error during
device I/O" occurs.

I can dual-boot my machine into Ubuntu 14.04 LTS with xsane 0.998.
There it works perfectly (same computer, same port, same cable).

I don't see any messages on the console or in /var/log/messages.

I've tried running it as root - same problem.

Any hints?

Thanks

Mike

[Bug 322902] Re: incorrect encryption detected when logging on to WPA ad-hoc wireless network

2010-08-23 Thread mistr
I can also confirm the bug in Lucid.

I can connect (XP - Ubuntu 10.04) via an unencrypted or nearly
unencrypted (WEP) Ad-Hoc connection.

I noticed how the following fact, which might hint to the source of the
problem:

When I switch to WPA, the Ad-Hoc network an XP machine is listed as
encrypted, but not as an WPA encrypted network (my home network is WPA2
and listed as such).

XP asks for a password, but expects an WEP key (for the WPA network).

A network scan from another Ubuntu machine showed:

my home network with WPA2:

the Ad-Hoc network (configured as WPA):

encrypted, but not marked as WPA.

I tried to configure it via the command line, but I'm missing the
iwconfig/ifconfig commands for the wireless WPA. I don't want to put
them into /etc/network/interfaces to avoid conflicts with my normal
setup.

[Bug 353446] Re: GDM auto login won't work with ecryptfs

2010-06-07 Thread mistr
A new variant of the bug is present in the CD install of 10.04 LTS:

On a freshly installed system, with the first user having an encrypted
home directory, the drop down list in "Login Screen Settings" for the
auto-login user is indeed blanked.

If a second user is added - also with an encrypted home directory - the
second user IS selectable as an auto-login user with all the
consequences described above. It seems that only the first user is
"unlisted".

Installed gdm version: 2.30.0-0ubuntu5

[Bug 426582] Re: (32MB) certain windows drawn garbled when XAA is used

2010-01-20 Thread mistr
I now have a definitve answer. I found the "Maintanance and Service
Guide" for my laptop. It reads: "32 MB of discrete video memory".

At least it shows, that lspci does not report the actual video memory,
and if the Xorg log doesn't report it either, answering this question is
non trivial.

The bug description remains valid.

[Bug 426582] Re: (32MB) certain windows drawn garbled when XAA is used

2010-01-19 Thread mistr
I'm not sure where to look for the video ram size. I didn't find anything in
the Xorg log file.
lspci -v reports:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility M7 LW
[Radeon Mobility 7500]
Subsystem: Compaq Computer Corporation Device 00b7
Flags: bus master, stepping, 66MHz, medium devsel, latency 66, IRQ 11
Memory at 4800 (32-bit, prefetchable) [size=128M]
I/O ports at 3000 [size=256]
Memory at 4040 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=64K]
[virtual] Expansion ROM at 4042 [disabled] [size=128K]
Capabilities:
Kernel modules: radeon, radeonfb

My guess: 128M (which wouldn't fit the 32 MB of less theory)

Initial situation:
- Laptop, Compac Evo 610c, Karmic 32 bit
- The well-known garbled output in the gnome-notifier and gnome-system-monitor
with compiz off (my normal setting).
- No problems with compiz turned on.
- Problem still present with the current xorg-edgers drivers.

Current work-around:
Automatically generated xorg.conf with a single change:
Option "RenderAccel" "off"

Test done so far:
- EXA: works but is visibly slower
- KMS: works, but is visibly slower, leaves artifacts on the screen when
objects are moved (which will be cleaned up eventually)

[Bug 496214] [NEW] gnome-system-monitor and notification area not readable without compiz

2009-12-13 Thread mistr
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-system-monitor

The first time I noticed that bug was during the pop-ups of the
notifier ("connected to network", etc.). The attached file shows what
that looks like.

I get a similar pattern when I try to open the gnome-system-monitor.

When I switch to the lowest compiz setting in gnome (normal), these
windows show the correct content.

Other programs that I normally use, don't have these problems. As a
matter of fact, I only realized the problem with the system-monitor when
I tried to get the process id to report this bug. And as I don't know
which package the notification area belongs to, I file it against the
gnome-system-monitor, even though a notification area that is not
readable is more important (IMHO).

I can reproduce the bug on a freshly installed Karmic system, on the
Karmic i386 Live CD and on todays build of the Lucid Live CD.

Karmic:
I tried xorg-edgers - same problem.

Lucid;
The dsplay on the Lucid build looks weird even with compiz, but at least the
text is readable. When switchin the visual effects off, I again get some kind
of pattern.

The laptop I'm running is a few years old and uses an ATI radeon card
(r100 driver).

I have been told that there is no Ubuntu-Git repository, so the
bisection has been done against the mesa upstream repository
(http://cgit.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa /
git://anongit.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa).

As reported earlier the first "bad" commit is the
bfbad4fbb7420d3b5e8761c08d197574bfcd44b2 commit.
This one does NOT cause a segfault.
gdb reports that the "program exists with code 0352".
Output from Blender on the console: "drmRadeonCmdBuffer: -22".

The next commit in line is 4322181e6a07ecb8891c2d1ada74fd48c996a8fc
which makes blender segfault.

[Bug 446632] Re: blender-bin crashed with SIGSEGV in GPU_state_init()

The analysis of the core dump did not look very informative (no
symbols). So I let blender-bin crash inside gdb. (The file named
blender is a shell script executing blender-bin).

Looks like the same bug to me.

There were new packages from xorg-edgers, today. This analysis was
performed using those packages.

[Bug 446632] Re: blender-bin crashed with SIGSEGV in GPU_state_init()

2009-11-28 Thread mistr
Some "sudo restart gdm" later.

The latest version of mesa that Blender can run under is:
7.6.0~git20090817.7c422387-0ubuntu8
Window decoration looks ok now; still problems with notifier pop-ups.

Starting from 7.6.0-1ubuntu1 the segfault occurs.

[Bug 446632] Re: blender-bin crashed with SIGSEGV in GPU_state_init()

2009-11-28 Thread mistr
I can confirm that downgrading helps.

I installed the following packages from the very first karmic versions
of mesa, skipping the binaries from the mesa packages that were not
already installed on my system:

libgl1-mesa-dri_7.4-0ubuntu3_i386.deb
libgl1-mesa-glx_7.4-0ubuntu3_i386.deb
libgl1-mesa-glx-dbg_7.4-0ubuntu3_i386.deb
libglu1-mesa_7.4-0ubuntu3_i386.deb
mesa-utils_7.4-0ubuntu3_i386.deb

I now have a very nice pattern if the notifier pops up, and the window
decoration looks a bit strange, too. Redrawing of damaged areas is also
a bit slow. But Blender does not crash!

The next task would be to find the version that makes Blender crash.

How can I get those? I updated before the test. Those versions are not

[Bug 332690] Re: [jaunty] libMagick++.so.10: cannot open...

2009-06-14 Thread mistr
Same problem over here. Inkscape stopped working after update from 8.10
-> 9.04.

I de-installed and re-installed inkscape - no change.

As you can see in the output of ldd, this is not the only library that
is "missing"

libMagick++.so.10 => not found
libWand.so.10 => not found
libMagick.so.10 => not found
libpoppler.so.2 => not found
libpoppler-glib.so.2 => not found

I created the following symlinks in /usr/lib to libraries with a
"similar" name:

sudo ln -s libMagick++.so.1.0.0 libMagick++.so.10
sudo ln -s libMagickWand.so.1.0.0 libWand.so.10
sudo ln -s libMagickCore.so.1.0.0 libMagick.so.10
sudo ln -s libpoppler.so.4.0.0 libpoppler.so.2
sudo ln -s libpoppler-glib.so.4.0.0 libpoppler-glib.so.2

(Note that the basename did change sometimes.)

After that inkscape does at least start - I can't say if it will crash
at some point due to mismatching library versions.

This info is taken from a 64 bit Jaunty release.:
Linux me 2.6.28-11-generic #42-Ubuntu SMP Fri Apr 17 01:58:03 UTC 2009 x86_64
GNU/Linux

ls -l /usr/lib/libMagick*

looks different in my 32 bit Jaunty setup in my virtual box.

[Bug 377989] [NEW] OOo Writer 3.01 und 3.1 do not read tables from MS word documents

2009-05-18 Thread mistr
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

After a recent update to Ubuntu Jaunty I discovered that tables from
Word documents were missing.

A search in this bug tracker revealed that there were various bugs
concerning WRITING tables in MS-Word format, this one is about READING
them.

I updated to the 3.1 version from Launchpad, but the problem remained.

On a 32 bit Jaunty install the same document is read and rendered as
expected.

I attach a screenshot from the 64 bit machine.
The two lines of white space between the paragraph markers is where the table
is supposed to be. This area can not be selected.

[Bug 308357] [NEW] Regression: Intrepid bluetooth serial connection not working

2008-12-15 Thread mistr
Public bug reported:

I use a GPS mouse which sends its data in ASCII format via a bluetooth
serial link to my laptop. The bluetooth capability is provided by an USB
dongle. This worked under Hardy, it stopped working under Intrepid.

(Intrepid) Kernel: 2.6.27-7-generic #1 SMP
lsusb of the dongle: ID 1131:1004 Integrated System Solution Corp. Bluetooth
Device

Commands issued on Hardy and Intrepid resulting in the same output:

m...@hardy:~$ sudo hcitool scan
Scanning ...
00:02:C7:7D:F5:17 BlueGPS 7DF517
m...@hardy:~$ sudo rfcomm bind /dev/rfcomm0 00:02:C7:7D:F5:17 1
m...@hardy:~$ ls -l /dev/rfcomm0
crw-rw 1 root dialout 216, 0 2008-12-14 23:15 /dev/rfcomm0

If I try to open that device (e.g. in Python: a =
open("/dev/rfcomm0","r") ), the function call is successful under Hardy
and I can read the ASCII data stream. Under Intrepid, I get an IOError

The only hint in the Intrepid syslog is:

[Bug 148037] Re: blender crashes on camera view

2008-05-15 Thread mistr
This very much looks like a bug in the Linux graphics driver.
I.e. using a newer Blender version from blender.org might not help, but it's
worth a try.

But I'm happy to report, that since updating to Hardy Heron, this bug is
gone.

[Bug 44874] Re: auto smbfs mount in /etc/fstab causes hald hang at boot

2006-06-13 Thread mistr
If worked here - at least for now (I restarted the system a few times
without problems).

In my opinion, this work-around also points to a timing issue between
starting the ethernet network, starting the samba system and mouting the
network shares.

Most of most of the above mentioned suggestions influence the point in
time when a specific service is started:

putting smbfs in /etc/modules: early in the boot process

mounting shares in /etc/rc.local: late in the boot process

pre-up sleep 5 in /etc/network/interfaces: give something else more time
to finish

This would also be consistent with my observation that the /etc/modules
variant sometimes work and sometimes it doesn't.

My guess: This problem is a hick-up in the multi-threaed booting process
introduced sometime during the latest Dapper pre-releases.
