[Bug 2066898] Re: HP LaserJet CP1025 prints black text as blue in LibreOffice writer

2024-07-10 Thread mrvanes
Never mind, I found the solution(s)

For future reference:

1. To solve no devices found in hp-setup I needed to edit
/usr/share/hplip/data/models/models.dat like described in
https://answers.launchpad.net/hplip/+question/694898 and
https://bugs.launchpad.net/hplip/+bug/1907444

That enabled me to find the printer using hp-setup, but print quality
was still abysmal.

2. To actually fix the black is not black problem, I just had to remove the
hplip/hpijs printer and use the foo2zjs driver for "HP LaserJet Pro CP1025nw
Foomatic/foo2zjs-z3 (recommended) (en)"
https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/650290/print-text-using-black-ink-on-hp-laserjet-color-printer

It's a bit of a shame that the first problem still exists in noble and the 2 is
actually the solution.
Would be nice if HP had some QA procudures installed before releasing drivers
for their printers?

[Bug 2066898] Re: HP LaserJet CP1025 prints black text as blue in LibreOffice writer

2024-05-26 Thread mrvanes
I forgot to execute one test last time: LO writer -> PDF -> Okular -> printer
(all local).
I think this prints 100% CMY black, instead of 100% K, but it's totally
acceptable compared with the blue of LO -> printer.

[Bug 2066898] Re: HP LaserJet CP1025 prints black text as blue in LibreOffice writer

2024-05-23 Thread mrvanes
Some more testing:
Printing black text in Inkscape comes out as pitch black. Printing a pdf with
black text, generated in LibreOffice Writer (different computer, same version
of LO) prints as black.

A pdf generated on the failing system using LO writer, prints pitch
black on another computer/printer combi.

So there's something weird going on with the specific LO->printer
installation?

[Bug 2066898] [NEW] HP LaserJet CP1025 prints black text as blue in LibreOffice writer

2024-05-23 Thread mrvanes
Public bug reported:

After installing Ubuntu 24.04 and using the hplip tools to retrieve the
proprietary plugin for this printer, everything seems fine (the test
page prints correct!) but black text in LibreOffice Writer prints as
blue, regardless of using the 'print text as black' setting.

I've tried to use the hpijs driver as some users suggest, but printing fails on

to detect the printer on USB:

[Bug 1963820] Re: Fails to act a sound server by default

2022-03-14 Thread mrvanes
Afterthought: Now that I understand pipewire, pipewire-media-session and
wireplumber better (also thanks to this discussion) I, like most people,
prefer wireplumber. So in the end it's not a bad thing to have to
install wireplumber. It's just annoying that my previous setup stopped
working. Thx again!

After reinstalling pipewire-media-session and touching with-pulseaudio
in /usr/share/pipewire/media-session.d (which now exists) everything
works fine. So your first hunch actually was correct and fixes the
problem.

My apologies for the noise.

So, by installing wireplumber I apparently removed media-sesssion, which
makes sense because they replace eachother which may explain this line

Let me start by saying there was no /usr/share/pipewire/media-session.d
so I created that directory and touched with-pulseaudio. Doing that and
removing wireplumber results in the same absence of any valid pulseaudio
devices.

Ok, thx. That makes sense and the short answer is: It doesn't. My

installed.

If there's anything I can do to help, please let me know.

[Bug 1963820] Re: Upgrade to 22.04 misses wireplumber

2022-03-07 Thread mrvanes
Ok forgive me my ignorance about pipewire, I'm trying to catch up and
understand the differences with pulse.
Back on 21.10, I followed this wiki on how to enable pipewire + pulseaudio
support:
https://wiki.debian.org/PipeWire#For_PulseAudio
This explicitly mentions pipewire-mediasession and the touch of with-pulseaudio
in /etc/pipewire/media-session.d/ which I did and worked flawless on 21.10. My
understanding of the problem was that media-session now (22.04) requires
wireplumber to work as a pulseaudio replacement *at all*. I didn't know they
were alternative solutions for the same problem?

In that case, the bug would be: pipewire + media-session + pulseaudio
emulation doesn't work as expected on 22.04.

Does that help?

[Bug 1950135] [NEW] Missing session ending dialog in KDE Plasma Session under Wayland

2021-11-08 Thread mrvanes
Public bug reported:

Under Wayland, when I use any of the session ending icons in the
KDE/Plasma start menu nothing happens. The screen showing the 30s
timeout and the confirmation of the intended action doesn't come up.
However, the sesion is closed/ended/restarted or powered off after 30
seconds.

The upstream developer suspects this to be a packaging problem, hence my
report here.

[Bug 1930911] [NEW] virtualbox dkms should not prevent building for unsupported kernel

2021-06-04 Thread mrvanes
Public bug reported:

It seems that virtualbox-dkms checks whether the current kernel for
which the virtualbox modules are being built is supported:

Building module:
cleaning build area...
make -j8 KERNELRELEASE=5.12.9 -C /lib/modules/5.12.9/build
M=/var/lib/dkms/virtualbox/6.1.18/build
ERROR (dkms apport): kernel package linux-headers-5.12.9 is not supported
Error! Build of vboxnetadp.ko failed for: 5.12.9 (x86_64)
Make sure the name of the generated module is correct and at the root of the
build directory, or consult make.log in the build directory
/var/lib/dkms/virtualbox/6.1.18/build/ for more information.

and while doign so, prevents the modules from being built.
The build however succeeds:

# make -j8 KERNELRELEASE=5.12.9 -C /lib/modules/5.12.9/build
M=/var/lib/dkms/virtualbox/6.1.18/build
make: Entering directory '/usr/src/kernel/linux-5.12'
...
make: Leaving directory '/usr/src/kernel/linux-5.12'

so I suspect the test to be too agressive (exit code != 0?) and makes
dmks abort the build.

Could the warning be more lenient and not abort module building when the
kernel is not supported?

[Bug 1922893] Re: virtualbox modules fail to build on hirsute for kernel 5.11

2021-05-23 Thread mrvanes
I'm running kernel 5.12.5 at the moment and to be honest, I can't find
the changes I made to SUPDrvTracer.c to make it work anymore? So
apparently something changed in 5.12.x or in virtualbox 6.1.18 packages
that make it work now for me?

Anyway, the commands to recompile the modules:
$ sudo make KERNELRELEASE=5.12.5 -C /lib/modules/5.12.5/build
M=/var/lib/dkms/virtualbox/6.1.18/build/
$ sudo make modules_install KERNELRELEASE=5.12.5 -C /lib/modules/5.12.5/build
M=/var/lib/dkms/virtualbox/6.1.18/build/
$ sudo modprobe vboxdrv
$ sudo modprobe vboxnetadp
$ sudo modprobe vboxnetflt

did the trick for me...

Yes, creating /var/lock/sane resolves the problem (for me) in 1.0.31.
The problem is that /var/lock is a temp fs under Debian/Ubuntu and thus
should be recreated on every boot, instead of once during installation
(or by sane on startup).

Both current master and 1.0.31 work like a charm when I compile them myself,
dynamic and static loaded backend. So there's not much to bisect for me?
If I relink the packaged libsane-plustek.so.1 to my compiled version in
/usr/local/lib everything also works (with the packaged scanimage).

[Bug 1832882] [NEW] libcurl-gnutls segfaults spotify client

2019-06-14 Thread mrvanes
Public bug reported:

The latest release of Spotify client segfaults in libcurl-gnutls as can be read
in this thread on spotify support forum:
https://community.spotify.com/t5/Desktop-Linux/Ubuntu-19-04-deb-package-segfault/td-p/4761479

According to one participant the work-around is to install debian
packages libgnutls30_3.6.8-1_amd64.deb and
libcurl3-gnutls_7.64.0-3_amd64.deb

Ubuntu 19.04 version of the packages:
libgnutls30 3.6.5-2ubuntu1.1
libcurl3-gnutls 7.64.0-2ubuntu1.1

As the bug can be resolved by installing debian packages, I assume
Ubuntu's version of the packages is at fault and should be upgraded to
match debian's level as soon as possible.

[Bug 1768125] Re: libnewlib-arm-none-eabi generates wrong code for cortex-m0

2018-05-01 Thread mrvanes
I can compile the firmware using gcc-arm-none-eabi-7-2017-q4-major from
https://developer.arm.com/open-source/gnu-toolchain/gnu-rm/downloads. I
do have to remove -flto (which was in the original makefile I didn't
mention) and add --specs=nano.specs to get ridd of undefined references.

memset now disassembles like this:
0800027e :
 800027e:   0003movsr3, r0
 8000280:   1812addsr2, r2, r0

 8000286:   4770bx  lr

 800028a:   3301addsr3, #1
 800028c:   e7f9b.n 8000282

Which runs fine in the debugger.

[Bug 1768125] [NEW] libnewlib-arm-none-eabi generates wrong code for cortex-m0

2018-04-30 Thread mrvanes
Public bug reported:

Since my upgrade to 18.04 last weekend I can't compile a working
firmware for my stm32f0xx based drone flight controller. The mcu halts
at HardFault_Handler and it turns out the generated code for memset is
faulty.

I've managed to narrow the problem down to the following code:
int main(void)
{
int test[4] = { 0, 0, 0, 0 };

while (1);
}

void HardFault_Handler(void)
{
while(1);
}

In which HardFault_Handler(void) was add to prove the HardFault occuring at the
array initialisation.
The file is compiled using the following commandline:

arm-none-eabi-gcc -mcpu=cortex-m0 -g -mthumb -fdata-sections -ffunction-
sections -nostartfiles -ffreestanding --specs=nano.specs
--specs=nosys.specs -Wl,-T,flash.ld,-Map,output.map,--gc-sections
-std=gnu99 main.c  -o memset.elf

And uses STM32F0xx_StdPeriph_Driver includes and
CMSIS/Device/ST/STM32F0xx based startfile.

The resulting elf binary is then coverted to a binary using arm-none-
eabi-objcopy -O binary memset.elf memset

output.map mentions memset as:
/usr/lib/gcc/arm-none-eabi/6.3.1/../../../arm-none-eabi/lib/libc_nano.a(lib_a-memset.o)

So I suspect the memset nano libc version is used.

arm-none-eabi-objdump -d memset.elf produces the following code for
main:

080001b8 :
 80001b8:   b580push{r7, lr}
 80001ba:   b084sub sp, #16
 80001bc:   af00add r7, sp, #0
 80001be:   003bmovsr3, r7
 80001c0:   0018movsr0, r3
 80001c2:   2310movsr3, #16
 80001c4:   001amovsr2, r3
 80001c6:   2100movsr1, #0
 80001c8:   f7ff ff7c   bl  8c4
 80001cc:   e7feb.n 80001cc

And memset starts like this:

08c4 :
 8c4:   e313tst r0, #3
 8c8:   e92d4010push{r4, lr}
 8cc:   0a37beq 80001b0
 8d0:   e352cmp r2, #0
 8d4:   e2422001sub r2, r2, #1
 8d8:   0a32beq 80001a8
 8dc:   e201c0ffand ip, r1, #255; 0xff
 8e0:   e1a03000mov r3, r0
 ...

When I step through the assembly, after arriving at 0x08c4, the
debugger however shows this assembly:

0x8c4   movs   r3, r0

0x8d0    movs   r0, r0
0x8d2    b.n0x800077a
...

This doesn't look like the disassembled code at all, and

0x80006ea contains no valid code:
0x80006ea  ;  instruction: 0x
0x80006ee  ;  instruction: 0x
0x80006f2  ;  instruction: 0x
0x80006f6  ;  instruction: 0x
0x80006fa  ;  instruction: 0x
0x80006fe  ;  instruction: 0x

Thus reliably results in the HardFault_Handler()

I'm in no way an experienced cortex developer/debugger. The above
observations are what I managed to research last days since not being
able to compile the firmware anymore.

I noticed that the above dump of memset function from the .elf file
looks to contain valid asm (starts with tst, push and then a beq to a
valid address), but the instructions + operands are all 32bits, where as
the code in main is just 16 bits for each instruction + operand. That
smells fishy to my unexperienced eyes?

This is as far as I understand the arm toolchain and had to give up.

In my (humble) opinion the best way to solve this thinking forward, is to
upgrade to freetype 2.8.1, plasma 5.11 and adjust font queries in kdeglobals

Then, my advise would be to backport the TT hinting fix to 2.8.0 in

long way to go. Anyway, all is fine for me, so feel free to decide as

No, only half of the problem was caused by libfreetype 2.8.0 (normal TT

other part (bold/italics) is a Qt 5.9.x problem and needs some love from
Qt.

[Bug 1684506] [NEW] QT4 Trolltech.conf settings lost after reboot

2017-04-20 Thread mrvanes
Public bug reported:

Since the update to Kubuntu 17.04 / plasma 5.9.4 all qt4 based
applications (e.g. KeePassX) render using wrong font instead of my
personal configured font. When I run qtconfig-qt4 (4.8.7), change font
and click 'save', a fresh .config/Trolltech.conf is saved, contains the
correct font config and all qt4 applications now show correct font.
These settings however do not survive a reboot although Trolltech.conf
exists and contains correct settings.

[Bug 1635157] Re: Bluetooth disabled after resume from standby on Yakkety (regression)

2016-10-25 Thread mrvanes
Ok, I did some investigation and looked at syslog for a succesfull and
two failing BT reconnects. This is the succesful log (the others will
follow). A quick scan over the lines reveals one outstanding difference
between success and failure:

On failure, NetworkManager reports this extra line, which is completely
missing from succes log upon receiving the "new Bluetooth device
message".

Oct 24 11:15:51 minivanes NetworkManager[828]:   [1477300551.0193]
device (60:51:2C:A2:05:CC): state change: disconnected -> unmanaged
(reason 'removed') [30 10 36]

After enabling bluetooth in plasma bluetooth interface, the two failed
syslog's final conclusions are:

Oct 24 11:22:05 minivanes NetworkManager[828]:   [1477300925.4564]
device (60:51:2C:A2:05:CC): state change: unavailable -> disconnected
(reason 'none') [20 30 0]

So, in short: On failing resumes NetworkManager incorrectly concludes
the BT is unmanaged, instead of just disconnected.

Which is exactly the last line for a succesful resume.

Could you all please read up on
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=109051

I know it's a long read, but we're chasing the same bug and duplicating
a LOT of effort. BzukTuk for example found the 4.2.0 commit
8fb55197e6... on februari 1 2016. But the problems started around 3.16
and disappear somewhere in the 4.1.x line and are reintroduced in 4.2 by
8fb55197e6..., but different. It now takes longer (sometimes days) for
the freezes to occur. So many think we're actually looking at two, maybe
three problems at the same time, which makes bisecting extremely
difficult. Reverting 8fb55197e6... in current kernels does NOT solve the
problem I know for sure (I tried) unless I made a mistake because the
commit does not completely match current state of i915 driver.

My apologies if I sound pedantic... I too, hope joined efforts will get
this (these) bugs squashed as soon as possible, but please refrain from
"me too" posts. The report is already flooded as it is.

[Bug 1574501] [NEW] Zabbig_agent needs valid home directory

2016-04-25 Thread mrvanes
Public bug reported:

In Xenial, zabbix-agent installer generates zabbix user without valid
home dir (/nonexistent). This breaks RemoteCommands that need a
writeable homedir to complete:

e.g. I wrote a tiny script to count number of security upgrades waiting
(using aptitude). This works on all precise and trusty servers, but
failed on the new xenial install:

zabbix# zabbix_get -s webhostnew -k
'system.run[/usr/local/sbin/count_upgradeable,wait]'
E: /nonexistent/.aptitude - mkdir (2: No such file or directory)
1

Seting zabbix user homedir to /var/run/zabbix fixed the problem.

[Bug 424215] Re: Bluetooth mouse usage makes A2DP audio stutter

Thanx to the fix in #23 I can now listen to uninterrupted A2DP audio
from my laptop and use (or better, -not- use) the mouse without causing
audio stutter. I'm running Kubuntu Wily (Frameworks 5.15.0, Applications

[Bug 1053585] [NEW] Package origin not showing *-security

2012-09-20 Thread mrvanes
Public bug reported:

I use apt-show-versions to decide if I have to flag an alert in my
monitoring system for pending security updates. On nearly all of my
installs this succeed, except for two: they show the update's origin to
be precise instead of precise-security and thus don't trigger an
alert when grep'ing for security in apt-show-version's output:

#!/bin/sh
apt-show-versions -u | grep security | wc -l

I can't seem to find any difference in the apt setup of those machines.
They all have the same (default) repositories listed, in the same order.

When looking through aptitude on the misbehaving machines, it clearly
shows security updates are pending, so they really should have
triggered.

[Bug 726438] Re: Can't login after standby since 2:2.12.0-1ubuntu5.2

2011-03-22 Thread mrvanes
I think the problem is not related to the intel driver version
2:2.12.0-1ubuntu5.2 bump, but to these bugs in kernel 2.6.38 that
apparently have not been fixed completely yet?

I therefor consider this bug invalid.

[Bug 726438] [NEW] Can't login after standby since 2:2.12.0-1ubuntu5.2

2011-02-28 Thread mrvanes
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

After upgrading xserver-xorg-video-intel to 2:2.12.0-1ubuntu5.2 I can't
login to my KDE desktop after coming back from standby. The screensaver
is somehow restored, but no login dialog appears. I can switch to the
console using ctl-alt-f1but after that can't switch back to tty7 hence I
suspect X in an undefined state. Killing and restarting kdm is the only
way to access my desktop again (apart from rebooting of course).

Reverting back to 2:2.12.0-1ubuntu5 solves the problem.

[Bug 691699] [NEW] wrong bitrate with 2:0.98.1653+git88b90d9-3ubuntu1

2010-12-17 Thread mrvanes
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 690296 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/690296

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: x264

When using x264 in combination with mencoder and this commandline:

mencoder dvd:// -dvd-device SOME.iso -alang en -passlogfile
/tmp/dvdrip_31156.temp -ovc x264 -x264encopts
bitrate=:pass=1:turbo=1:threads=1 -vf
crop=718:572:0:2,scale=-1,dsize=1.33845 -oac copy -slang nl -o /dev/null
-of avi

the used bitrate in 2:0.98.1653+git88b90d9-3ubuntu1 goes through the
roof and keeps increasing way over what I supplied resulting in
Gigabytes of avi.

Downgrading to 2:0.98.1653+git88b90d9-3 resolves the problem and gives
me normal bitrates and normal sized avi again.

2010-12-17 Thread mrvanes
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 690296 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/690296

That commandline should read:

mencoder dvd:// -dvd-device SOME.iso -alang en -passlogfile

bitrate=860:pass=1:turbo=1:threads=1 -vf
crop=718:572:0:2,scale=-1,dsize=1.33845 -oac copy -slang nl -o /dev/null

The bitrate was missing, which is only in the output of my script, not
on the actual command, which you see in this post.

[Bug 659771] [NEW] find does not handle -size parameter 1 correctly

2010-10-13 Thread mrvanes
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: findutils

When I use find, to find file smaller dan 1024 bytes like this
$ find -size -1024c

the example result is:
./Briefcase/Test/pasfoto.jpg.meta
./Briefcase/cimg0087.jpg.meta
./Briefcase.meta

However, when switching to the k multiplier I don't get any result until I use
2, instead of 1:
$ find -size -1k
$ find -size -2k
./Briefcase/Test/pasfoto.jpg.meta
./Briefcase/cimg0087.jpg.meta
./Briefcase.meta

The same is true for M and G; It seems there's a bug in handling 1's in

2009-03-13 Thread mrvanes
Although I was very sceptic about the propsed fix, I tried
reinstallation (aptitude reinstall python-qt4-dbus) and the problem is
fixed (for me).

[Bug 321100] Re: acpid steals powerbutton events from powerdevil

Recent updates in Jaunty overwrote my manual changes (apparently) and
the problem is back. Could this fix please be uploaded into the
repository please?

[Bug 334868] [NEW] kolourpaint crashes when selecting most of the painting tools

2009-02-26 Thread mrvanes
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kolourpaint4

Kolourpaint4 in jaunty crashes when one of the paint tools (eg Elipse) is
selected. After that, kolourpaint crashes at startup untill kolourpaintrc is
removed from config directory.
Version: kolourpaint4 4:4.2.0-0ubuntu2
Platform: amd64
At this moment I can't provide a useful backtrace due to missing debug symbols.

[Bug 259278] Re: knetworkmanager will no longer connect

This might be related to a rf-kill switch bug in iwl3945. It should work
if you start with rf-kill disabled (ie wireless enabled).

Yes, Jaunty has quite usable plasma-widget-network-manager some time
now. I tried it a couple of weeks ago but wasn't impressed. It's
actually usable now and fixes the problems with knetworkmanager most
importantly!

[Bug 321100] [NEW] acpid steals powerbutton events from powerdevil

2009-01-25 Thread mrvanes
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: acpid

On my laptop (Dell Vostro 1400) when acpid is running, powerdevil
doesn't see the powerbutton event. This means that I don't get the
'logout/restart/poweroff' dialog, but an immediate powerdown if I press
the powerbutton. Ubuntu release: Jaunty.

Don't know if this a duplicate of https://bugs.launchpad.net/gnome-
power/+bug/57872 but that one hasn't been touched for a while and is
about gnome-power-manager instead of powerdevil (kde).

2009-01-25 Thread mrvanes
# cat /proc/acpi/event
button/power PBTN 0080 0001
^C

There's a minor change in the original bug since recent updates:
I *do* see the logout/restart/poweroff dialog for a very short time now, I just
don't have the choice...

So powerdevil probably sees the event, but acpid takes over after that.

[Bug 303011] Re: [i945] 2.5.1 driver poor performance

2009-01-12 Thread mrvanes
I'm not sure if this is the same problem as I has but I recently
stumbled on a dead-slow compiz after getting DRI2/UXA to work on my
jaunty install using a intel 965 and xorg-edgers ppa.

I nailed to problem down to the compiz-wrapper (/usr/bin/compiz) not
using -indirect-rendering when UXA/DRI2 is active and that is due to
this test:

if [ $($GLXINFO 2/dev/null | grep GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap -c) -gt 2
]

With EXA/DRI this results in 2 occurrences of GLX_EXT_texture_from
pixmap and so -indirect-rendering is used (correct, or at least VERY
fast). With UXA/DRI2 this test finds 3 occurrences and thus disables
-indirect-rendering. Without -indirect-rendering compiz is dead-slow on
my intel 965 (with UXA) so either something is wrong with the driver
(and the wrapper is correct) or the wrapper test is wrong (for UXA/DRI2)
and should be changed to cover DRI2/UXA and -indirect-rendering
correctly.

If this totally unrelated, I'm sorry... should I file a different bug
concerning dead-slow compiz using DRI2?
