[Bug 1267207] [NEW] Install fails with: The user `xrdp' already exists.

2014-01-08 Thread mwaltz
Public bug reported:

When installing the package xrdp on a system with an existing xrdp user
through directory authentication (VAS to Active Directory), the postinst
script fails because the user already exists.

Setting up xrdp (0.5.0-2) ...
adduser: The user `xrdp' already exists. Exiting.
dpkg: error processing xrdp (--configure):
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Errors were encountered while processing:
 xrdp
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

getent shows the user as coming from VAS,

mwaltz@midna:/tmp $ getent passwd xrdp
xrdp:VAS:84118:200:xr dp:/usr2/xrdp:/bin/denylogin

Updating the postinst script to check if the user exists first and do
nothing, will work around this issue and still create the user on
systems when the user doesn't exist. See attached proposed patch.

Stefan, thank you for the test kernels and I'll try them out on some of
our G6 blades here. How about netinstall kernels? We generally see this
problem when imaging new hardware and it grows from a 20 minute install
to a 2 hour one.

[Bug 562509] Re: Automounts users autofs home directories by default (face browser disabled)

2010-07-20 Thread mwaltz
Just installed it on a 10.04 system and I'm still seeing GDM load a user
list and mount up all their home directories.

I tried to set the greeter to the simple login but I'm getting a gconfd
error which is unrelated. Still, even if the simple greeter disabled I
don't think it should be trying to automount all the users home dirs.

[Bug 571872] [NEW] bnx2x drivers take 100 seconds to initialize

2010-04-29 Thread mwaltz
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: debian-installer

When doing a net install with the netboot files for 10.04 on HP BL460 G6
blades with bnx2x onboard NICs the kernel is able to identify the first
4 interfaces one after another, but then takes 100 seconds between the
remaining 6. It then cycles through again. Once it's done it's then
unable to DHCP from eth0 and eth1, and only eth2 seems to work properly.
HP BL460 G6 blades use logical ethernet devices, and should only have a
count of 8 devices, not 10. It seems that the physical NICs are included
(as eth0 and eth1).

Error that appears after 100 seconds is:
[bnx2x_wait_ramrod:7159(eth4)]timeout polling for state c on IDX [1]

This does not happen once the system is fully installed and running
locally, it only happens when doing a netinstall.

lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 10.04 LTS

apt-cache policy linux

What I expect to happen:
Netboot and detect all ethernet devices in reasonable amount of time, then DHCP
from eth0 to begin install.

What happens instead:
Netboot begins, cycles through first 5 devices quickly, then takes 100 seconds
between the remaining 5 devices. It then does this once more before trying to
do DHCP.

[Bug 561390] Re: LVM - /var failed to mount during boot

2010-04-23 Thread mwaltz
2.13 didn't work for me, but after trying out 2.14 from the PPA it
booted up cleanly. I'm attaching the boot.log with --debug and
/var/log/udev.

What Happened:
System booted and stuck at mounting /var and /local/mnt, continued booting
after pressing S to skip

What I did:
Added PPA and upgraded to mountall 2.14, which then the system booted fully and
mounted all LVM partitions without needing to press S.

[Bug 562509] [NEW] Automounts users autofs home directories by default (face browser disabled)

2010-04-13 Thread mwaltz
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

Even with the face browser disabled when GDM starts it mounts up to 100
users autofs home dirs. This is an issue since having hundreds of
desktops hosts automatically mount autofs home dirs when they'll most
likely not be used could cause a resource issue on the file server. This
is as a possible security too issue since the system is automatically
mounting home dirs without authentication.

Description:Ubuntu lucid (development branch) - sync'd from main repos on
April 13th
Release:10.04
Package:
gdm:
  Installed: 2.30.0-0ubuntu4
  Candidate: 2.30.0-0ubuntu4
  Version table:
 *** 2.30.0-0ubuntu4 0
500 http://apt-dev/ubuntu/ lucid/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

What was done:
Face browser disabled per:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SecurityTeam/FAQ#GNOME%20Display%20Manager%20%28gdm%29
sudo -u gdm gconftool-2 --set --type boolean
/apps/gdm/simple-greeter/disable_user_list true

Expected behavior:
GDM displays username prompt with no filesystems mounted with the exception of
those in /etc/fstab. Once a user logs in successfully their home dir should
automount.

Actual behavior:
GDM displays username prompt, up to 100+ home dirs from /etc/autofs.home are
mounted.

There is a bug filed in upstream for this as well:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=607728

[Bug 415353] Re: karmic installation slow on "detecting network hardware" with bnx2x

2010-04-13 Thread mwaltz
This is working marginally better with the 2.6.32-20 kernel, it cycles
through eth0-eth4 relatively quickly with a 2 second delay between them.
When it gets to eth5 though it pauses for 100 seconds between the
remaining ones. I've attached a screenshot of the detection times.

[Bug 542666] Re: No verbose output on ubuntu-server

2010-03-23 Thread mwaltz
Same problem here. Removed plymout,h but upon boot it's strangely quiet.
We have a custom script that runs from /etc/init.d/ that normally is
quite noisy about what's it's doing, but with 10.04 it boots to login
without a peep, even though the script is running in the background.

I understand having quiet boot is good for desktops and splash screens,
but for ubuntu-server it would be nice to have it by default do a
traditional sequential init script boot. Is there an upstart option for
sequential and verbose booting?

I realize we could re-write the script to work with upstart, but the
documentation for this doesn't seem finished and I haven't had much luck
finding good examples online. Not to mention the amount of time and
resources needed to re-write tried and true init.d scripts.
