[Bug 202120] Re: Firefox 3.0b4 crashes on Yahoo Mail (javascript ?)

2008-04-06 Thread mystictim
With the latest Hardy updates and Firefox 3.0b5 this is no longer a
problem for me and Yahoo is working fine.

[Bug 209107] Re: VLC doesn't register itself as a DVD player

2008-04-01 Thread mystictim
Sorry please ignore previous post it's not a problem with the location of
defaults.list which should be left alone.
The problem appears to be that nautilus can't find the vlc.desktop entry. If
this proves to be the case then there are two possible solutions either
Nautilus needs to look in /usr/share/applications/ for .desktop entries or
applications need to add a copy of their .desktop entries to
~/.local/share/applications
A simple work around to get VLC to appear as an option in Nautilus >
Edit>Preferences>Media>DVD Video you only need to copy the vlc.desktop entry
into your ./local/share/applications folder by
$cp /usr/share/applications/vlc.desktop
~/.local/share/applications/vlc.desktop
The copy appears in Nautilus as the entry VLC media player you need to change
%U to %m in VLC media player>Properties>Launcher>Command to get DVD's to play
automatically. You can now go into Nautilus and select VLC. DVD's should now
start automatically when you put them in your computer.

[Bug 209107] Re: VLC doesn't register itself as a DVD player

2008-03-31 Thread mystictim
It looks like VLC on Hardy is looking for defaults.list in the wrong
place. Following the hint in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source
/gconf-editor/+bug/203877/comments/20 to modify the user copy of
defaults.list and the information from http://library.gnome.org/admin
/system-admin-guide/stable/mimetypes-registering.html.en I uninstalled
vlc and then looked in my user's ~/.local/share/applications for
defaults.list This wasn't present so I copied the original defaults.list
from /etc/gnome/defaults.list into this directory. I then installed vlc.
Now by going to Nautilus > Edit>Preferences>Media>DVD Video l was able
to select VLC. When I put a DVD into the computer VLC starts up but
unfortunately it then crashed. Following a tip about changing %U to %m
in the .desktop entry for vlc I copied
/usr/share/applications/vlc.desktop to user's
~/.local/share/applications/vlc.desktop. Then in VLC media player>
Properties>Launcher>Command changed vlc %U to vlc %m. Now I can put a
DVD into the machine and it will start up in VLC.

[Bug 203877] Re: Hardy: gconf-editor changed settings ignored by system

2008-03-30 Thread mystictim
I don't think this is a bug as such just a confusing and obscure method of
configuring Ubuntu. To get VLC to play DVDs by default I followed the advice
given at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=733559 #8
Step 1 is to set VLC as the default DVD player via:
$ sudo gedit /ect/gnome/defaults.list
And changing the line x-content/video-dvd=totem.desktop to
x-content/video-dvd=vlc.desktop
Step 2 is ensuring that VLC starts with menus enables this is done via editing
two files first
$ sudo gedit /usr/share/applications/vlc.desktop
and changing exec=%U to exec=%m then
sudo gedit /usr/share/app-install/desktop/vlc.desktop
and changing exec=%U to exec=%m in this file as well.
You can now go to Nautilus > Edit >Preferences>Media and select Open VLC media
player for DVD Video

[Bug 203877] Re: Hardy: gconf-editor changed settings ignored by system

2008-03-19 Thread mystictim
Having exactly the same problem with Hardy Heron Alpha 6. After
launching conf-editor and then navigating to the key
/desktop/gnome/volume_manager/autoplay_dvd_command then setting value to
vlc %m had no effect. Totem remains the default player. I think this
might be because Nautilus is over riding these settings. In Nautilus
under Edit > Preferences > Media > DVD Video the only media player
option available is Totem. This is very frustrating as DVDs don't play
properly in Totem as thier is no Menu navigation and only the first VOB
is played.

[Bug 203912] [NEW] aqsis dependencies broken in Hardy Heron

2008-03-19 Thread mystictim
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: aqsis

When trying to install aqsis 1.2.0-2 on Hardy Heron Alpha 6 with
Synaptic reports that aqsis-libsc2a 1.2.0-2 Depends: libopenexr2c2a.
This file doesn't appear in the regular repositories. Bug #125658 was a
request to update this package which was promised for Hardy. I can find
libopenexr2ldbl and libopenexr-dev. Is one of these the replacement for
libopenexr2c2a and if so should I try putting a sym link from
libopenexr2c2a to libopenexr2ldbl?

** Affects: aqsis (Ubuntu)

[Bug 188428] Re: gedit crashed with SIGSEGV in g_slice_alloc()

Latest Hardy Heron
Kernel Linux 2.6.24-5 Generic
Gnome 2.21.90
gedit 2.21.1-Oubunttu2
Hi not sure if this is the same bug as only gedit appears to be crashing.
Should I report a seperate bug?
When I changed /desktop/gnome/interface/file_chooser_backend key value to
gnome-vfs the crash still occured. However on installing gvfs-dbgsym
libglib2.0-0-dbgsym libgtk2.0-0-dbgsym the crashes appear to have stoped.
However on running $sudo gedit I get this error message.

$ sudo gedit

[Bug 175022] Re: DVD playback choppy

2008-02-06 Thread mystictim
I have the same problem on Ubuntu Hardy Heron with a Samsung TS-H552B
(TSSTcorpCD/DVDW) and 2.6.24-5 Kernel running on an MSI RS480M2/RX480M2
motherboard. If I tried to play a DVD its playback was slow and jerky. Looking
on the Ubuntu forums I found that the problem might be that DMA wasn't enabled
so I ran:
 $  sudo hdparm -d1 /dev/scd0
 setting using_dma to 1 (on)
 HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device

Then following a tip from a forum post I ran
$ dmesg
   ...
   [   35.286790] ata2.00: ATAPI: TSSTcorpCD/DVDW TS-H552B, GA04, max UDMA/33
   [ 35.286804] ata2.00: simplex DMA is claimed by other device, disabling DMA
   ...

Then searched Ubuntu forums for "simplex DMA" and found these posts
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=435706 and
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=678153
Folowing the advice in the first post I ran:
$ lsmod | grep -i ^libataā€¯
   libata176304  4 pata_acpi,sata_sil,ata_generic,pata_atiixp

Then following the advice in the second post in reply #9 I blacklisted the
ata_generic module.
WARNING BLACKLISTING THE WRONG MODULE CAN RESULT IN A NON BOOTABLE MACHINE
I did this by opening the file /etc/initramfs-tools/modules and adding these
lines at the bottom:
  pata_atiixp
  blacklist ata_generic

Then I recreated the initramfs with
$ sudo update-initramfs -u

Then after rebooting the CDROM drive now has DMA enabled and the DVD's
playback smoothly.

>From this it appears that there is a bug in the ata_generic module that
prevents DMA from being enabled on some CDROM Drives on some computers.
