[Bug 646862] Re: skype crashes after signing in

2011-06-15 Thread neuromancer
Skype crashes after start. Same error output as reported on #73.
Also reinstalling and deleting profile (.Skype) doesn't fix the problem.

Also disabling Ubuntu audio controlling options as reported on #67 doesn't work
(chmod ugo-r /usr/lib/libpulse.so.0.12.2 /usr/lib/libpulse-simple.so.0.0.3).
Lastly no success moving away configuration file of Skype (mv
~/.Skype/shared.xml ~/.Skype/shared~.xml) as reported on #94.

Skype is imploding after microsoft acquisition... We need an easy, open
and cross-platform alternative solution.

[Bug 794932] [NEW] Empathy doesn't open URI with particular characters

2011-06-09 Thread neuromancer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

Empathy 2.32.1 - Ubuntu 10.10
I have received a link

a popup that report:
Unable to open URI - Operation not supported

The link point to the latest version of phpmyadmin, and with a cut and paste in

I think the problem is related to this particular URI because other URI work

2011-02-25 Thread neuromancer
In Ubuntu 10.10 maverick meerkat tesseract-eng package is correctly
installed installing tesseract so this bug is FIXED.

@Kat Amsterdam : I think that your problem is a different one and not related
to this bug.
Howewer try to see if in the directory reported by your problem there is the
right file.
cd /usr/share/tesseract-ocr/tessdata/
ls -al

In my case launching tesseract file.tif file.txt -l it
give me same error
So I've checked if it.unicharset was present in
/usr/share/tesseract-ocr/tessdata/ folder and I've found that this file is
named ita.unicharset.
Launching tesseract file.tif file.txt -l ita works great :)

[Bug 662288] Re: rt2800pci freeze on module unload [maverick i386]

2011-02-17 Thread neuromancer
Hi Ubuntu user.
Solution proposed on #9 by Wolfgang worked for me on Hp 620 notebook with
Ubuntu 10.10 installed.
The only problem is that when a new kernel is installed via update-manager or
synpatic, my RaLink RT3090 Wireless 802.11n 1T/1R PCIe stop working and is not
recognised by Ubuntu.
So every time a new kernel is installed I need to remove rt3090-dkms package
and reinstall it.
After a reboot all works.

I have understood that dkms package was able to recompile himself when
necessary, but in this case dkms doesn't work.
Any idea?

Bye

[Bug 671972] Re: Cannot extract lzma compressed archives created with tar

2011-01-30 Thread neuromancer
See also this discussion on lzma error under ubuntu (it's about
wkhtmltopdf) http://code.google.com/p/wkhtmltopdf/issues/detail?id=414

I've downloaded the wkhtmltopdf static i386 for Linux
(http://code.google.com/p/wkhtmltopdf/downloads/detail?name=wkhtmltopdf-0.10.0_rc1-static-i386.tar.lzma&can=2&q=)
but I was unable to extract correctly using fileroller gui and also tar and
unlzma from shell.
All this return:
lzma: SetDecoderProperties() error
tar: Child returned status 1
tar: Exiting with failure status due to previous errors
as reported above by elrond.

lzmainfo wkhtmltopdf-0.10.0_rc1-static-i386.tar.lzma
return lzmainfo: wkhtmltopdf-0.10.0_rc1-static-i386.tar.lzma: Not a .lzma file
but this is a lzma compressed file... so also lzma under Lucid and Maverick is
broken...

So I tried the xz utility and it works!
xz -d wkhtmltopdf-0.10.0_rc1-static-i386.tar.lzma
extract the file from the lzma compression, returning a normal tar file.

If you desire to directly extract the file, just pipe it with tar
xz -cd wkhtmltopdf-0.10.0_rc1-static-i386.tar.lzma | tar xvf -

[Bug 696766] Re: Eog is unable to display multipage TIFF but is the default viewer for TIFF files

2011-01-15 Thread neuromancer
I accept the decision of the debian developer to not implement this feature in
EOG because multipage tiff support is already implemented in EVINCE, but I
disagree with you for closing this bug.
This bug is related to Ubuntu and incorrect handling of multipage TIFF.

Clicking on a TIFF image *under Ubuntu* will open EOG not EVINCE, so
normal users, not hacker, not only aren't able to see all page of TIFF
but also doesn't get informed in any way that this image have more than
one page :(

And how this normal user will find that EVINCE is the right application for
open multi TIFF images?
Guessing?

I think that Ubuntu have to associate EVINCE as default viewer for TIFF images.
And also I think that this bug should be reopened.

Bye.

[Bug 696766] [NEW] Eog is unable to display multipage TIFF but is the default viewer for TIFF files

2011-01-03 Thread neuromancer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: eog

Eye of gnome, the default image viewer of Ubuntu, open only the first
page of a multi page TIFF image, hiding from end user existence of other
pages.

After a little research I've found the this bug have a long story:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=132276
Upstream this bug was not fixed because this feature was implemented in Evince,
the generic document viewer used by default also by Ubuntu... but for me, and I
think also from all other *end users* this is a non sense because evince in
Ubuntu is not associated to open by default TIFF files so *end users* who
receives a multi page TIFF doesn't know that this TIFF are multi page because
EOG completely hide this information, showing only the first page :(

Same consideration are reported also here:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=385781

I think we need to move forward with a simple and function solution.
For example I propose:
- make Evince default viewer for TIFF images
- make Evince default viewer only for multi page TIFF images (it's possible
without adding more and more code?)
- adding analogue feature to EOG (maybe using partial code from evince)
- EOG should inform in it's gui that this TIFF has more pages and should
provide a link to open it

[Bug 567580] Re: ubuntu 10.04 hangs on shutdown splash

2010-10-25 Thread neuromancer
I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 with kernel 2.6.32-25-generic-pae.
My motherboard is a Gigabyte EX58-UD5.

This problem on shutdown wasn't native on my configuration for Ubuntu 10.04. It
appear after some update, about one month ago I think.
And it's not related with the splash graphical login/logout.
Indeed removing "quiet splash" from GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT doesn't resolve
the problem... it still hang on
"Will now halt"

Instead, in my case, as reported in comment #10, adding acpi=force to
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT worked.

[Bug 188039] Re: [needs-packaging] OpenProj

2010-09-24 Thread neuromancer
Any news here?
I started my search here: http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/8757
and as reported on brainstorm, this kind of request are bug with
needs-packaging tag, so after a while I've found this bug report.

Just a few considerations:
* It's a good program that give to users a functional and stable alternative
and replacement to analogous proprietary software used on other OS (see bug #1).
* The license of OpenProj is CPAL 1.0
(http://www.opensource.org/licenses/cpal_1.0) a license approved by the OSI.
* On the OpenProj site (http://openproj.org/openproj) there is a clear
indication of their support for GNU/Linux OS and they have also a DEB package.
* Furthermore the main screenshot is of OpenProj running under Ubuntu and, as
cited above in this bug report, there is also a quote of Mark Shuttleworth.

So it's strange that this isn't yet in Ubuntu repository.

[Bug 501670] Re: g_set_prgname() called multiple times

2010-09-04 Thread neuromancer
Just two tips for user who have this problem starting Thunderbird.
My friend is running Ubuntu karmic 9.10 and thunderbird 3.1.2.
Sometime thunderbird stop working, he double click the icon but the program
doesn't start.
So i read this discussion, and, as said by scutterman in #16, the solution is
in the mozilla Kb http://kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diagnostic_-_Thunderbird

In my case I have opened a terminal, then typed thunderbird -safe-mode and
thunderbird start.
After that I've disabled all extension, closed thunderbird and reopened in
normal mode 2 or 3 times (just typing thunderbird or double click in the
desktop icon).
Next step (to repeat for every extension do you have) is to enable one
extension a time, close thunderbird and reopen.
After a while I have found the guilty, in my case Lightning 1.0b2.

g_set_prgname() called multiple times is only a warning and have nothing to do
with the real problem ;)

[Bug 105088] Re: Thunderbird does not honor gnome-vfs paths

2010-07-21 Thread neuromancer
Just a workaround for now.
Create a symlink from mounted network share (samba or other) to a local folder
e.g. sudo ln -s /home/username/.gvfs/srv_folder\ su\ 172.16.0.1/ /media/srv1
Now create a bookmark to /media/srv1

Accessing this bookmarked folder with thunderbird work greatly: all file
are attached correctly.

Note: if you unmount network share, symlink is broken, so folder is not
accesible. When you boot machine is necessary to mount all your
desidered network share.

[Bug 604648] [NEW] Evince doesn't print some pdf if page size are too bigger

2010-07-12 Thread neuromancer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

I have downloaded a pdf but when I try to print it with evince, after a while
appear an error dialog reporting "Errore di stampa" Si è verificato un problema
nell'elaborare il documento <>, document was not printed and
furthermore my printer give me a blank sheet with just some other error
informations:
Error: /rangecheck in --.execform1-- Operand stack: --dict: 7/16 (L) -- 1 11

PDF information extracted with pdfinfo are:
Creator:Adobe InDesign CS4 (6.0.4)
Producer: Adobe PDF Library 9.0
CreationDate: Thu Jun 17 15:14:35 2010
ModDate:Thu Jun 17 15:14:39 2010
Tagged: no
Pages: 1
Encrypted: no
Page size: 850.394 x 1190.55 pts
File size: 342137 bytes
Optimized: yes
PDF version:1.6

So I have supposed that probably is a problem of page size.
Firstly I have installed also Acrobat Reader, opened the same pdf file and
tried to print, and all is ok.
Next, I have re opened the same file with evince: also the print preview
confirm my hypothesis because not all the pdf area of the page are displayed
correctly but only a part of it (cutting some text on left and right side).
So I have searched if evince give me the possibility to scale it and after a
while I find on "Gestione pagina" (probably page management) the select box
near label "Scala pagina" (probably page scaling). Setting it to "Adatta
all'area stampabile" (probably adapt it to print area) and next printing the
pdf work ok and print a pdf similarly to the pdf printed with acrobat reader.

So I think that the right behaviour of evince in this cases would be to
adapt the page automatically if page size are too bigger.

[Bug 600982] [NEW] Show trash icon on desktop

2010-07-02 Thread neuromancer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Trash icon is not visible by default on desktop
and furthermore is not simple for an average user to show it.
Actually you have to trick with gconf-editor or install 3th party applications
as Ubuntu-tweak.

So we have two problem for an average user:
1. trash icon is not visible and he/she doesn't have an idea how to retrieve
documents in the trash etc.
2. there isn't system gui tools installed by default on Ubuntu, so average user
is lost just for a trash...

Solution would be to have trash icon visible on default installation of
Ubuntu.

[Bug 16492] Re: Mouse pointer should disappear when keyboard is in use and mouse isn't

2010-07-01 Thread neuromancer
@mpt
Good compromise between actual situation (mouse pointer always visible ) and
solution proposed in this bug report (mouse pointer should disappear when
typing, reading and all cases where mouse pointer is useless).

I'm using unclutter on lucid lynx from two weeks and I think that is very
useful when writing (for example in this box but also in Open Office) and
reading documents.
However I had meet some unpleasant behaviours, for example tooltip in firefox
(alt and/or title of images, links etc.) or other browser disappear when mouse
pointer disappear, if I try to listen a song from nautilus when mouse disappear
song preview is restarted etc.

After that I think that unclutter is not mature for going in
"production".

Probably mouse pointer should disappear quite immediately when *writing* and
reappear after a little gap of time, when text cursor is probably distant.
Furthermore I think that there are situations where mouse pointer shouldn't
disappear also if not in use (not on the go) and this complicate the unclutter
behaviour.

[Bug 16492] Re: Mouse pointer should disappear when keyboard is in use and mouse isn't

2010-06-19 Thread neuromancer
@Matthew Paul Thomas
I've also tried unclutter and for me it's a good compromise.
1) in open office cursor disappear nearly immediately (between 1 or 2 seconds)
and this is very very comfortable when typing. If you move the mouse or change
current application (with alt+tab switcher or something else) mouse cursor
reappear.
2) in firefox cursor disappear both when reading something and when typing (in
awesome bar or search bar)
3) in gimp I've your behavior but for me it's not distracting because mouse
disappear only if you don't use it for a little gap of time (2 seconds I think)

In my opinion unclutter it's a good application that enhance the user
experience.
One possibility would be to have an option on system>preferences>mouse to
enable or disable the "unclutter behavior", so any user can eventually change
it. (Default beahvior unclutter on > mouse disappear after a little gap of time
[eventually configurable in this window too])

Same here in Ubuntu Karmic 9.10 32 bit.
If I change a user passwor with passw there are 2 cases:
1) completely different password --> no problem, password is updated correctly
2) long password and new password is equal to old password except for 1 or 2
last characters --> password isn't updated --> passwd report: Bad: new password
must be different than the old one

Maybe the password wasn't updated correctly when old password was long
more than 8 characters and different characters respect to new password
are in positions major of 8.

[Bug 504841] [NEW] Canon LBP 3360 default driver is wrong

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: foomatic-db

When I install a Canon LBP 3360 via ethernet connection the default drivers
used by ubuntu (Canon LBP-3360 Foomatic/pxlmono) aren't right.
If I try to print some documents there are some strange character (like pipe |)

Obviously in karmic 9.10 64bit version, wich doesn't need pae extension, all
work right.
In a new recent installation, all ram memory was recognized (3x2Gb ram) and
when I've installed also the nvidia driver (185) no problems occur.

[Bug 461177] [NEW] tesseract 2.03 generates empty file

2009-10-26 Thread neuromancer
Public bug reported:

Karmic Koala 9.10 beta - tesseract 2.03
Installed tesseract-ocr, tesseract-ocr-eng and tesseract-ocr-ita.

I opened with gimp an image with some number and other informations and cutted
just a selection of it and then saved to a tif format.
The image is very cleaned and well contrasted (white background and black text)
but when I launched
tesseract inputimage.tif outputfile
the outputfile.txt generated was empty (no text and 1 byte in size).

After a bit of searching, I've found a solution here
http://groups.google.com/group/tesseract-ocr/browse_thread/thread/2434f09ed180c092/e5ed41969097c708?lnk=gst&q=screenshot#e5ed41969097c708
Just do
convert inputimage.tif inputimage_tmp.pbm
convert inputimage_tmp.pbm inputimage_ok.tif
This problem exists because sometimes tif images have an alpha transparent
layer that block the text recognition.

Accordly to this page http://code.google.com/p/tesseract-
ocr/issues/detail?id=160, the new version, 2.04, have fixed this
problem, so the only thing to do is to package new version.

As said by McDavid I think that the best solution will be to put notification

Do you remember?
http://www.markshuttleworth.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/jaunty904_notifications_example1_web_092.swf
- highest free position
- slide up
- no different position for async and sync (no more confusion or wrong

- integration with indicator-applet

Solution given by Lepikk worked for me.
Just for completeness, I've used a cd-rom of Ubuntu Karmic Beta1 and from the

2009-08-21 Thread neuromancer
I've installed yesterday karmic koala alpha 4 in my inspiron 9400 (same as #7)
and the audio isn't working correctly.
The behaviour is the same of #6.
The volume is too high. If I try to reduce it silence...

In pulseaudio volume controller the harware device is setted to analog stereo
output (digital stereo duplex doesn't reproduce any sound).
If I launch from shell the alsamixer, i see that my sigmatel has a PCM, Master
and LFE and that PCM is setted to 100%, LFE also and Master is about 15%. If I
try to reduce one of this volume I see that they are related in the same order
of phenest (first PCM, then LFE and only when they are at 100% the Master start
to increase but obviously the volume is now too high and disturbed).

[Bug 174031] Re: [hardy] gdm does auth. but no more

2007-12-04 Thread neuromancer
After a little investigation I found:

gnome-keyring process in Zombie state:

1000 16652 0.0 0.0 0 0 ?ZDec04 0:00 [gnome-
keyring-d]

and this one:

1000 16654 0.0 0.1 5496 1736 ?SDec04 0:00
/usr/bin/gnome-keyring-daemon -d --login

I hope this could help.
Best Regards,
neuromancer

** Description changed:

After upgrading to Hardy (from Gutsy) I can't login in GDM, I explain:

  - Enter the username and press enter (all OK request me the password)
  - Enter the password and press enter (nothing happens, but the auth is
correct)

  From auth.log:

  Dec 4 23:37:15 pradio gdm[16629]: pam_unix(gdm:session): session opened for
user neuromancer by (uid=0)

And GDM don't do more. That's all.

+ Dist: Hardy (with 4/Dec/2007 updates installed)
+ Arch: i386

  neuromancer

[Bug 148560] Re: installer hangs with encryption and random password

2007-10-22 Thread neuromancer
I've get the same error with Gutsy (Final) Alternate CD.

When I select Automatic partitioning with encryption, all works OK,
but when I manually setup the partitions and select a random password (for
swap), I always get a hang of the installer "Starting/loading partitioner 54%".

neuromancer

In Feisty (gnome-cups-manager) works ok, I were able to manage/add
printers... Only upgrade to Gutsy (no user/group management) and
system-config-printer don't work, I manually added (before upgrade and
failed to admin printers) my user to the lpadmin group (with
users-admin) and now all works ok.

I don't know if my user belong to this group before the upgrade to Gutsy
(in Feisty, is necessary belongs to lpadmin to admin printers?, this is
could be the problem.)

No, I use PAM auth.

Before the upgrade do Gutsy I used gnome-cups-manager

Now, when all ok, this is the output: "lpadmin:x:113:neuromancer"
I added this manually in users-admin

[Bug 134503] cupsys 1.3 upgrade fails

2007-08-24 Thread neuromancer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cupsys

I've upgraded from Feisty to Gutsy, and the new system-config-printer
doesn't allowed me to make any change or new configuration. I've tried
with my username and no password, my username and my password, root...
and I always get the same error when trying to apply any change: "Failed
to set settings".

Searching in /var/log/cups/error_log I found this:

E [22/Aug/2007:14:10:21 +0200] CUPS-Set-Default: Unauthorized
E [22/Aug/2007:14:10:21 +0200] CUPS-Set-Default: Unauthorized

Somebody have any idea?
When starts system-config-printer doesn't require administrative password like
many other admin. apps.

neuromancer
