[Bug 1097763] Re: Firefox 18 anti-aliasing does not render correctly some text

2013-01-20 Thread ngc2997
This is also an issue on Fedora 18 with Firefox 18, so I'd rather not
think it is generally font rendering related. Fonts throughout the
system (Gnome 3 / Gnome Shell with Droid Sans as default font) render
correctly. The colour halos / aberration is only noticable within
Firefox on certain web pages (e.g. FB and G+) in specific areas. Having
the (system-wide correctly rendered) Droid Sans font set as default in
Firefox with the allow web pages to use other fonts check box disabled
also shows the incorrect rendering, so I'd rather regard this a Firefox
issue.

[Bug 405340] Re: Conky background uses gtk_color_scheme's window background color, at random

[Bug 405340] Re: Conky background uses gtk_color_scheme's window background color, at random

2012-10-29 Thread ngc2997
This issues still seems to be around on Ubuntu 12.10 - conky would
randomly turn its background into some light grey. Most of the time this
happens shortly after logging into the desktop, with conky being
autostarted through a ~/.config/autostart entry. In very rare occasions
though, the grey background returns to normal after some time, without
any noticeable trigger.

Conky window is configured as:

own_window yes
own_window_type override
own_window_hints undecorated,below,sticky,skip_taskbar,skip_pager

[Bug 641503] Re: Firefox address bar auto-complete fails

2011-05-09 Thread ngc2997
This is still present in FF 4.0.1 (Ubuntu 11.04, i386). In addition,
this might be related to combo boxes being unresponsive to mouse clicks
- i.e., clicking on a folder in the bookmarks toolbar does not open
(drop down) the appropriate entry, or else the opened drop down list
closes immediately when hit by the mouse pointer. At the same time,
autocomplete ceases to work, until I minimize FF and restore it
afterwards. After that, both autocomplete and opening combo boxes return
to normal operation. Hardly reproducible though..

Note: as indicated above, minimizing and restoring FF seems to help as a
workaround as well - at least, it does for me.

[Bug 755842] Re: Non-maximized windows which sit on the border of a workspace move when called

2011-05-02 Thread ngc2997
In addition to the original report, I've seen very similar behaviour,
but without the moving effect when clicking an application icon of an
application on a different workspace - this had no other effect than
blanking the upper panel, and the requested window's drop shadow became
visible on the current workspace. As reported above, it did not switch
workspaces as expected. I guess this might somehow be related to the
original issue reported here, yet with a slight variation in its effect.
Also, I've seen this happen with maximized windows (hardly reproducible

[Bug 159594] Re: Crash to white screen of death (possibly Firefox?)

2010-09-19 Thread ngc2997
Having watched this a couple of weeks now, I don't think it is related
to Compiz. Actually, I do think it might be related to Firefox and
possibly some other interfering component.

I switched to Chromium quite soon after my comment above (#51) and
didn't experience any more WSOD crashes since then, even after re-
activating Compiz. This is somehow notable as the machine on which I was
experiencing the crashes is a 'production' system being used for
software development more than ten hours a day, and actually I only
remember the system crashing when I was using Firefox; in some, if not
all (but I am not sure about this) cases right after Firefox gained
focus and I started mouse movement. This would also partially match
assumptions in comment #21 and might point to some interference between
Firefox, focus handling and mouse movement.

[..] network manager should be added to the list

I don't think so - note this is not a NetworkManager issue, but one of
the driver (ar9170usb). NetworkManager just triggers it by
periodically scanning for other APs, but that's a feature, not a bug. To
quote Dan Williams (NetworkManager developer): [..] note that if the
device does have problems with periodic scanning, this is 100% a driver

This issue still seems to be present in Lucid - I experienced a number
of white (or light grey) screen crashes lately.

As it is rather hot here these days, at first I thought this could be
related to an overheating graphics adapter (xserver-xorg-video-ati and
the 2.6.32 kernel do not support power management), but I saw the system
crash just yesterday after having placed an extra fan above the GPU's
heatspreader, so I guess this might rather not be a hardware related
issue.

Currently, I am suspecting compiz to be involved in this somehow; since
having deactivated it, I haven't experienced the crash again. Crashing
generally rather infrequently, of course it is too early to definitely
blame the issue on compiz though..

[Bug 540827] Re: ar9170usb wifi module crash + instabile connection

2010-06-29 Thread ngc2997
This somehow seems to be related to periodic scanning for other APs in
range (e.g., NetworkManager does this). When configured manually using
wpa_supplicant, I found the connection to be stable, unless I ran iwlist
scan commands periodically - doing so reproducibly kills the connection
after a random amount of time (I've seen this happen after five minutes
as well as over an hour), rendering the device unusable afterwards until
it is replugged.

There is a patched version of NetworkManager that does not perform
regular scans while a connection is established (see
https://launchpad.net/~volanin/+archive/ppa), which provides a stable
workaround for the problem; since I've been using that version, the
wireless connection has been absolutely stable here. Also, NM 0.8.1 will
regularly feature non-scanning behaviour for connections locked to a
specific BSSID.

[Bug 549140] Re: [ar9170usb] Wifi disconnects and doesn't reconnect until dongle replugged

2010-06-09 Thread ngc2997
This bug is definitely not related to NetworkManager. Running regular
scans while having established a manually configured connection
(wpa_supplicant) and no NetworkManager involved, the connection also
died intermittently, leaving the wireless device unusable afterwards.

I have already filed a bug against bugzilla.kernel.org describing this
specific issue, but so far to no effect; as far as I know, the developer
of the ar9170usb module currently focuses on a replacement driver (still
experimental though). This is actually sad news, as it means this issue
probably won't be fixed in the near future, rendering an otherwise good
wireless device useless.

[Bug 190515] Re: [Hardy][Intrepid] Low bandwidth with rt2400 / rt2500 drivers

2010-06-08 Thread ngc2997
Hm, seems my RT2560 based card is now also affected by this issue,
although I actually didn't notice until now.. (well, recently, I
exchanged my modem router, but that should not be an issue - a netbook
with an Intel wireless device runs at full 54M bandwidth all the time,
while my RT2x00 card slows down at the same time).

The card's power management is off by default on my system (by
rc.local), yet it seems the card slows down from time to time to rates
around 1400mbit/s. At first I thought this had something to do with pptp
being enabled over the wireless network, but the problem persists when I
disconnect from VPN. After shutting down the wireless connection via
NetworkManager, and bringing it up again, bandwidth returns back to
normal.

iwconfig permanently reports 54M, signal strength is 80% most of the
time. Is there a safe way to undoubtedly tell the bandwidth reduction I
am experiencing here is actually the same issue as reported here?

[Bug 549140] Re: [ar9170usb] Wifi disconnects and doesn't reconnect until dongle replugged

2010-06-07 Thread ngc2997
After having reported this to the NetworkManager developers in
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=620218, it turns out the
issue might rather be related to the driver itself than to
NetworkManager. This makes even more sense when considering that
recently I ran across a disconnect when doing manual scans with iwlist
for testing purposes - worked three or four times, then immediately
after another scan the connection was lost and the device locked
afterwards. This needs further testing (manual connection using
wpa_supplicant without NetworkManager, and periodic scans with a shell
script), but I am rather sure this is a driver / hardware issue.

[Bug 549140] Re: [ar9170usb] Wifi disconnects and doesn't reconnect until dongle replugged

2010-05-30 Thread ngc2997
Is there anything one can do to assist solving this issue (apart from
installing experimental packages - unfortunately not an option for me)?
This is very annoying as I basically like to use the network manager for
its convenient VPN features and its overall good usability; yet this
issue renders it nearly unusable for me as I need to have a stable
connection for working purposes (home office).

Btw: unloading and reloading ar9170usb does not work - device still
seems to be locked afterwards; no scanning results, network manager
shows not connected and does not list any wireless network either.

[Bug 571987] Re: Only first 20% of the volume slider works

2010-05-13 Thread ngc2997
Same problem here (VT1708S); both suggestions from the Ubuntu Wiki
mentioned above don't work. After deleting ~/.pulse/default.pa (i.e.,
resetting everything to default), trying to change the volume by media
keys or the panel applet has no effect at all anymore. Seems there is
something severely broken on Lucid, at least for VT1708S in combination
with alsa and pulse. *sigh*

[Bug 571987] Re: Only first 20% of the volume slider works

2010-05-13 Thread ngc2997
Well, actually I've just tested linux-backports-modules-alsa-lucid-
generic, but to no effect - neither media keys nor the volume panel
applet change any channel at all. Installing the package also had a
strange side-effect; seems it removed the network manager applet from
the panel and replaced it by a black square with no function.
Uninstalling the package brought back the network manager, but still
volume control does no longer control alsa channels, rendering the
applet (as well as the media keys on my keyboard) completely useless.

[Bug 322909] Re: future gnome-volume-control has many use case regressions with move to Pulse Audio

2010-05-10 Thread ngc2997
Is this still being investigated? Since I've upgraded to Lucid, I can
confirm weird behaviour when adjusting volume levels either by the new
volume applet in Gnome (indicator) or by media keys. This is very
annoying since it renders volume control rather useless. Concerning the
system running here (Intel HDA), this must have been introduced with
Lucid, as with Karmic everything went as expected (i.e., somewhat
'linear' control).

The current behaviour here is as follows:

When using the media keys on my keyboard with the volume initially set
to 0, this effects the 'Front' channel in the first place. Pressing the
appropriate media key three times sets the Front volume to 100% in three
steps; this is when the volume has reached its maximum value. The same
applies to the volume slider in the Gnome panel (indicator) - it sets
Front to 100% after about 10% of the slider width. After that, and when
Front has reached 100%, further volume increase effects the 'Master
Front' channel rather granular; yet there is no more increase in actual
volume.

Manually setting 'volume = ignore' values in /usr/share/pulseaudio/alsa-
mixer/paths/analog-output.conf.common is not really an option as this
file will most likely be overwritten when receiving updates for
pulseaudio; also, messing around in system files is not what I'd call a
'clean' solution..

[Bug 535540] Re: Radiance theme gets corrupted from time to time

2010-05-10 Thread ngc2997
I can confirm this bug on Lucid Final using the Ambiance theme. From
time to time, the theme seems to get lost, sometimes for the entire
desktop (window decorations, widgets, panels), sometimes this affects
only one particular window (ATM, I notice this with Nautilus) while the
rest of the desktop remains in 'normal' state. Usually, opening
SystemAppearance restores the actual theme, yet it doesn't when only
one window is affected. The entire effect is not safely reproducible.

[Bug 570589] Re: Lucid: Overheating due to no PM for ATI KMS

2010-05-07 Thread ngc2997
I definitely agree with Richard - I'd also rate this bug highly
important, especially with the fact in mind that for ATI cards the
xserver-xorg-video-ati driver is used by default on a fresh installation
(correct me if I am wrong here). Also consider this might perhaps lead
to increasing reports about dying video cards and eventually to bad
publicity for the entire distribution. I might be a bit too concerned
here, but I wonder how long a card may actually survive when permanently
running on temperatures around 80°C (when idle, that is).

Due to fglrx not supporting KMS and introducing a severe memory leak
with compositing enabled, I switched back to the free driver just
yesterday, but chose to revert that, as I am heavily concerned about the
lifetime of my video card (HD4350, passive / heatsink) when using the
free driver with the temperature being significantly (!) higher.

[Bug 568988] Re: [Lucid][Ubuntu 10.04][ATI cards] Slow/freeze windows management (resize, maximise, .etc) with fglrx driver + compositing desktop.

2010-05-05 Thread ngc2997
Confirm the fix works, at least when it comes to window management -
@Alf: thank you very much for providing the PPA.

Yet what I am still very unhappy with is the (obvious) memory management
problem (leak) mentioned in the original bug description. Having glxinfo
executed regularly by a script in order to deallocate memory is a hack
I'd rather not apply to my system, not because it doesn't work out (in
fact, it does), but because it is not what I'd call a 'clean' solution.
*sigh*

This is a really annoying situation: fglrx has severe memory problems
and doesn't support KMS (i.e. ugly boot screen), xserver-xorg-video-ati
lacks power management and lets the GPU run hot - both are (IMHO) not
usable, so back to non-compositing until one or the other (or both) get
fixed properly. :|

[Bug 294564] [NEW] PPTP connection frequently dropped with short read (-1)

2008-11-05 Thread ngc2997
Public bug reported:

Since Ubuntu 8.10, my office VPN connection (PPTP) frequently drops

Actually, this happens when generating traffic by e.g. calling web sites
that are routed over VPN (office intranet) or when working with an RDP
connection over VPN, but _not_ when being connected to my office machine

Is this perhaps related to the missing MTU configuration since NM 0.7?

[Bug 193501] Re: [hardy] seahorse password dialog not always modal

2008-05-02 Thread ngc2997
As opposed to this bug's original issue, please take note of the
following:

In its current form, the password dialog wouldn't let the user paste
anything into the passphrase field. This is (or at least, could be) of a
certain importance, when thinking of a complex passphrase being copied
from an application storing passwords so as to eliminate the need to
remember the passphrase.

In fact, this is what I (and possibly others) am doing when, for
example, signing an e-mail: I am using a panel applet for Revelation
(password safe) which holds my PGP passphrase. Until (including) Gutsy,
when the passphrase was prompted in the password dialog (of Gnome's
keyring manager, that was), I copied the passphrase from the panel
applet and pasted it into the password dialog, as the passphrase is
rather complex and consists of a series of digits and letters I can't
remember. This is now impossible as according to my description above
the password dialog won't let me paste anything, even if I copy the
passphrase to the clipboard beforehand.

[Bug 224233] [NEW] Enigmail unusable after upgrading to Hardy

2008-04-29 Thread ngc2997
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: enigmail

After upgrading to Hardy, the Thunderbird 2.0.0.12 / Enigmail 0.9.5
combination does not work properly anymore. Whenever trying to send a
signed or encrypted e-mail, the passphrase prompt appears (as expected),
asking for the key passphrase and (what is new and very annoying)
locking the entire desktop.

This is of a certain importance, because thus I am no longer able to
copy the (rather complicated) passphrase for my PGP key from a password
application's panel applet (Revelation), which simply doesn't react to
mouse clicks while the passphrase prompt is displayed. Also, no other
application can be started from Gnome's application menu, until I cancel
the passphrase prompt.

[Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy, Gnome 2.22.1, enigmail 2:0.95.0-0ubuntu5]

Addtl info: somehow, this seems to be related to Seahorse providing the
passphrase prompt as a modal window..

[Bug 157571] Re: g-n-a show no signal for wireless card

2008-01-11 Thread ngc2997
Same here, rt2x00 driver, Ubuntu Gutsy. The driver seems to not report
link quality properly (always 0), but only the signal level in dBm,
which is obviously not used by gnome-netstatus.

/proc/dev/wireless reads:

Inter-| sta-| Quality| Discarded packets | Missed | WE
face | tus | link level noise | nwid crypt frag retry misc | beacon | 22
   ra0: 0 -67. -2560 0 0 0 00

[Bug 38355] Re: wireless status not visible

2008-01-10 Thread ngc2997
Wouldn't it be possible to show the signal level instead of a link
quality in case the latter is not reported properly by the driver? I've
got a wireless card using the rt2x00 driver, which indeed does not
report link quality, but in fact it does report signal level (e.g.
-61dBm); the signal strength display being completely empty even though
there is a connection is slightly annoying.. Guess it might not be that
huge effort to change this; please correct me if I'm wrong here. :)

[Bug 60345] Re: Add to Panel... assumes and hard-codes font sizes

Actually seems to depend on whether the applet's description has more
than one line; see another example in the attachment (Gutsy, 32bit).

Of course; either way, the effect is a bit annoying (yet rather
cosmetic).. Btw, I haven't noticed this in Feisty.
