[Bug 1046721] [NEW] cheese doesn't start, but built-in webcam works in skype and guvcview

2012-09-06 Thread nickleus
Public bug reported:

when i run skype or guvcview my webcam works fine, but when i start cheese i
get the following error:
"
(cheese:4409): Gdk-WARNING **: The program 'cheese' received an X Window System
error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation)'.
  (Details: serial 148 error_code 1 request_code 154 minor_code 19)
"

i looked at the webcam troubleshooting page and didn't find anything relevant:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Webcam/Troubleshooting

i'm running ubuntu 12.04 (clean install) on a sony vaio VPCSE2V9E:
http://www.sony.no/product/vaio-s-serien/vpcse2v9e

that pages says the webcam vendor is Exmor

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 990510 ***

i figured out that you can workaround this by adding this to the boot options:
blacklist=firewire_ohci

[Bug 990510] Re: Hang on boot after updated to 12.04 Precise Pangolin

2012-05-01 Thread nickleus
when you boot the machine, press F8 to get to the kernel selection list.
mark the top line (the latest kernel) and press "e" to edit the boot options.
scroll down to the line with "quiet" and "splash" (i think it's the second to
last line) and add:
blacklist=firewire_ohci

press F10 to boot

[Bug 991889] [NEW] ubuntu 12.04 installation firewire_ohci failed to link power status

2012-04-30 Thread nickleus
Public bug reported:

I attempted to install ubuntu 12.04 on an Acer TravelMate 8200, without
success. Initially I would just get a black/blank screen after having
chosen install language English and attempting to "Install Ubuntu".

Then I added the boot options "nosplash noquiet radeon.modeset=0" and could
debug the problem, whereupon I discovered the following error:
"firewire_ohci failed to link power status"

I couldn't find any way to disable loading of firewire (1394), so I was
forced to abort installation of 12.04 and had to install 11.10, which
went totally fine, without problems, on the same laptop.

i jumped the gun too soon i'm afraid. it WORKS for a SINGLE desktop, but
NOT when i connect my laptop to an external monitor and try to split the

i ran jockey-gtk and there were no drivers.
i installed fglrx, which also installed fglrx-amdcccle.
i ran jockey-gtk again and it now shows up in the list, but says "this driver

so i ran: sudo aticonfig --initial

[Bug 658170] [NEW] ati catalyst proprietary display driver not working after upgrade from 10.4 to 10.10 (amd64 ATI Radeon HD 4650)

2010-10-11 Thread nickleus
Public bug reported:

i upgraded from 10.4 to 10.10 (not clean install) and uninstalled/purged
everything regarding fglrx, reinstalled the proprietary driver (hotfix) from:
http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/GPU83ATICatalystLinuxHotfix.aspx

when i start the System > Preferences > ATI Catalyst Control Center
(Administrative)
i get the following error:
there was a problem initializing catalyst control center linux edition
yadda yadda yadda

everything worked fine in 10.4, but it seems like 10.10 doesnt want to
play ball =)

2009-08-04 Thread nickleus
i also was experiencing mails not coming into my inbox, sometimes they would,
sometimes they wouldn't, it was weird. then i checked my junk folders. sure
enough there were the missing emails. in my plugins list there are 2 junk/spam
plugins: bogofilter and spamassassin
anybody have any idea which one (unless both) is the culprit?

[Bug 269264] Re: rfkill switch on Intel 4965AGN wireless does not work in intrepid

2008-10-31 Thread nickleus
thanks to Everett Guerny for the workaround:
sudo modprobe -r iwl4965 && sudo modprobe iwl4965

that worked for me. i'm on an acer travelmate 6292 and wireless has
stopped working after moving to intrepid. is there a fix for this?

[Bug 15424] Re: Error while burning DVD-RWs: Input/output error

2008-01-18 Thread nickleus
i had the same problem with DVD-R discs burning with an LG super multi rw dvd+r
dl burner in ubuntu 7.10. to fix my problem i just added this to my growisofs
parameters:
-speed=6

the speed went from 16x to 8x (what is the correlation between 16, 8 and
6??) and it worked fine =)
