[Bug 920652] Re: PenguinTV new upstream release 4.5

2012-09-12 Thread Owen Williams
I have a slightly modified tarball that might build more easily. Can
you try it and see if it works better? I really need to get the
packaging process working much better, sorry about this.

[Bug 920652] Re: PenguinTV new upstream release 4.5

2012-09-13 Thread Owen Williams
I have added true webkit support, so that patch is no longer needed.
There may be other patches that are also not needed, so let me know if
any of the others don't apply. The setup.py patch may not be needed
either.

Problem still exists on 11.10. I am looking for a solution but it's
outside of configuration I will probably not be able to find it.

Just noticed this is a PPC issue but I'm using x86 so it doesn't look as
if it's a platform specific issue.

[Bug 874132] [NEW] No 3D nor Unity using a Radeon Mobility card

2011-10-14 Thread Owen Savill
Public bug reported:

I have a ThinkPad with an ATI Radeon Mobility card. This used to work
great with 10.04 but fails with 11.04 and 11.10. Not sure at what point
it broke since I didn't use 10.10. I'll post more information as I get
it.

Currently the Xorg log doesn't show any errors with the DRM / DRI / GLX
modules and the kernel appears to have loaded the required modules but
I'll double check this. If I use the "ati" or "radeon" driver, which I
believe are the same anyway, X comes up but has no 3D. glxgears reports
about 10FPS. Using the "frglx" driver, which I believe is ATI's driver,
exactly the same happens but glxgears crashes!

I'm not sure what packages this involves, I've just come to Ubuntu from
Mandriva and I'm not yet familiar with the DEB package management. I'll
get more information to you ASAP.

[Bug 874132] Re: No 3D nor Unity using a Radeon Mobility card

2011-10-14 Thread Owen Savill
apport information

** Tags added: oneiric

** Description changed:

I'll get
more information to you ASAP.

[Bug 874132] Re: No 3D nor Unity using a Radeon Mobility card

2011-10-14 Thread Owen Savill
xdriinfo now returns "Screen 0: not direct rendering capable." and
"modprobe radeon" returns "FATAL: Module off not found."

Tried kernels 3.1.0-0301rc9-generic and 3.1.0-999-generic but they make
no difference.

** Description changed:

I'll get
more information to you ASAP.

[Bug 874132] Re: No 3D nor Unity using a Radeon Mobility card

2011-10-16 Thread Owen Savill
Done.

Tried both 3.1.0-0301rc9-generic and 3.1.0-999-generic daily build and
the issue still exists. The apport-collect command won't run with these
kernels and suggest I place a bug on the main kernel.org list.

Should I try the 10.04 kernel, as this was the last Ubuntu this card
worked with correctly?

I notice that you requested a test with 3.0.0-12.20. I do have a
3.0.0-12 kernel on my system, should I try this one as well?

[Bug 874132] Re: No 3D nor Unity using a Radeon Mobility card

2011-10-17 Thread Owen Savill
I am happy to raise a kernel.org bug report but how certain are you that
this is not an xorg ATI driver bug rather than the kernel itself? I know
this was working in 10.04 and I've now tried the 10.04 kernel and it
still doesn't work. Maybe this is not a kernel bug?

[Bug 92599] Re: Incorrect (low/stuttering) refresh rate with NVIDIA driver

2011-10-24 Thread Owen Williams
Deactivating Bailer and increasing the refresh rate do improve, but
don't completely fix the problems. glxgears is smoother, but still
jerks noticeably from time to time and gets much smoother as the window
size increases. And moving and resizing windows is still much, much
slower than with compiz 0.8.6.

[Bug 874132] Re: No 3D nor Unity using a Radeon Mobility card

2011-11-01 Thread Owen Savill
I've now had a chance to try this with Mandriva 2011.0 and Mageia 1.0.
They are using the same generations of xorg and kernel that Ubuntu 11.10
uses, i.e. xorg 1.10.1and kernel 2.6.38.

3D acceleration works great in both these distributions. I feel that
this is not an upstream kernel bug but an issue with the Ubuntu
packages.

Moreover in Mandriva and Mageia "lsmod | grep radeon" produces the following:
radeon887457 3
ttm64672 1 radeon
drm_kms_helper 40531 1 radeon
drm 179474 5 radeon,ttm,drm_kms_helper
i2c_algo_bit 13089 1 radeon
i2c_core 29667 5 i2c_i801,radeon,drm_kms_helper,drm,i2c_algo_bit

but in Ubuntu "radeon" is not shown. Attempts to "insmod radeon" result
in a failed to load error message.

[Bug 919298] [NEW] lightdm crashes/loops if guest disabled and no initial user

2012-01-20 Thread Owen Dunn
Public bug reported:

I'm configuring a preseeded automated installation of Ubuntu 12.04.
Because in its final state the system will get all its users from the
local Active Directory domain I do not have an initial user created, so
in my preseed configuration file I have the line:

d-i passwd/make-user boolean false

My organisation's policies prohibit a guest account, so a
preseed/late_command edits /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf to include the
line:

allow-guest=false

With this arrangement, when lightdm starts at boot time, it starts an X
server and displays a black screen with the mouse pointer in. This
screen disappears almost immediately. This is repeated 59 times, making
switching to another virtual console difficult.

lightdm should behave more sensibly when a local user is not available.

** Affects: lightdm (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 874619] Re: Unity compiz plugin makes display slow on multi-screen

2012-01-20 Thread Owen Williams
I see this problem too, but I only have one screen. Interaction gets
worse and worse, and compiz/Xorg CPU usage goes up and up until things
get really slow. Disabling unity plugin in ccsm fixes it.

[Bug 832641] Re: cdc-acm modems do not work properly using 7E1 byte format

2011-12-31 Thread Owen Duffy
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

I have tried two apps (minicom and smsclient) with to ACM modems, and
received 7E1 data does not have the parity bit stripped. I can check with STTY
and it shows parenb cs7 -parodd when the port is being used in 7E1 format, but
the received data has the parity bit passed through to the app.
The ACM modems work fine in 8N1 mode.
An ordinary RS232 modem on ttyS0 works fine with both apps using 7E1 format,
and the parity bit is stripped from receive data (ie only 7 bits passed to the
app).
This may be a long standing problem, possibly in the CDC-ACM driver.

  Using oneric, server.

[Bug 892954] [NEW] Banshee GUI locks and "grays out" unresponsive. CPU usage goes to 100%

2011-11-20 Thread Owen Pimm
Public bug reported:

Banshee GUI locks and "grays out" and all mouse driven requests are
unresponsive. CPU usage goes to 100% for all cores. If a music track
is playing, it continues to play until finished. At that point all
music stops. CPU usage continues at 100%. GUI can be closed by the X
button and selecting "Force Quit". PC returns to normal. Crash is
repeatable but does not occur at exactly the same time each occasion
application is opened. Evey now and then Banshee will not crash but
plays as expected.

[Bug 885909] [NEW] Boot process hangs in Ubuntu 11.10 server after upgrade

2011-11-03 Thread Owen Duffy
Public bug reported:

Boot process is delayed with the message on screen "ubuntu 11.10 booting
system without full network configuration".

Some processes did not start (eg nmbd, mediatomb). They appear to be
waiting for an event, in nmbd's case: start on (local-filesystems and
net-device-up IFACE!=lo) .

Some status checks:

root@u01:~# status network-interface INTERFACE=lo
network-interface (lo) start/running
root@u01:~# status network-interface INTERFACE=eth0
network-interface (eth0) start/running
root@u01:~# status nmbd
nmbd stop/waiting

So, it seems that the prerequisites for nmbd are running, but nmbd seems
to be waiting to start.

Looking at the code in network-interface.conf:

pre-start script
if [ "$INTERFACE" = lo ]; then
# bring this up even if /etc/network/interfaces is broken
ifconfig lo 127.0.0.1 up || true
initctl emit -n net-device-up \
IFACE=lo LOGICAL=lo ADDRFAM=inet METHOD=loopback || true
fi
mkdir -p /var/run/network
exec ifup --allow auto $INTERFACE
end script

It emits an event when lo starts, what emits an event to notify that eth0
started?

[Bug 885909] Re: Boot process hangs in Ubuntu 11.10 server after upgrade

2011-11-03 Thread Owen Duffy
In searching the net, it has become obvious that Ubuntu 11.10 is
severely bug ridden, that the status of bugs that prevent the system
fully starting is trivialised, and there doesn't look to be a fix
anytime soon.

My system is 11.10 server, it has one external network interface, eth0
using on board hardware. There has never been any doubt that the network
interface is actually starting and working fine. This cannot be an
unusual configuration.

That said, I have looked at why failsafe.conf is delaying things. It
looks like it provides a safety net for other failures:

rc-sysinit.conf contains start on (filesystem and static-network-up) or
failsafe-boot

So, perhaps it is filesystem or static-network-up that are the problem?

network-interface.conf is the only job that contains emits static-
network-up, but it doesn't seem to actually emit it.

Two things I discover, it appears that the pre start script exits
ungracefully, and it doesn't seem to emit net-device-up (needed by nmbd
for instance) or static-network-up (seemingly needed to allow the boot
to complete).

If some of this seems uncertain, it is because upstart is totally new to
me, and the system is short on documentation, and it is not my objective
to be a Ubuntu sysprog.

But, this might help others to develop a fix to allow their system to
boot fully.

[Bug 856810] Re: Boot hangs at "Booting system without full network configuration..."

2011-11-03 Thread Owen Duffy
Frustrated with this same problem for quite some time now with no
apparent fix coming, I attacked the problem on my own system today.

None of the fixes mentioned earlier in this thread fixed the problem,
not any that I have otherwise seen.

Since my problem might have different root cause for the same outcome, I
have written some notes in another bug report at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/885909 which might help some
people to a solution.

[Bug 885909] Re: Boot process hangs in Ubuntu 11.10 server after upgrade

2011-11-04 Thread Owen Duffy
This turns out to have been a result of the following line in
/etc/network/interfaces:

up flush-mail

Removing this line allows the ifup command to complete and fully
configure the eth0 interface, which does emit the necessary events to
allow the boot process to continue.

Messages alerting the failure of ifup are hidden by the wonder of the
upstart scripting, so there is no warning that the network interface
(which seemed to work fine) was only partially configured/started.

At some point, it seems the flush-mail command has been removed by an
upgrade, the up command crashes, ifup ends prematurely, no warning...

Perhaps hiding all the detail of startup by writing to /dev/null is not
such a clever idea?

[Bug 885909] Re: Boot process hangs in Ubuntu 11.10 server after upgrade

2011-11-05 Thread Owen Duffy
In summary, the root cause of the problem was a line in
/etc/network/interfaces which tried to run a non existent command (up
flush-mail).

ifup silently fails in that case, and although it has done almost
everything to start the interface, and the interface is fully
functional, it does not create the semaphore used by ifdown to signal
completion or emit the relevant upstart events. ifconfig reports normal
operation of the interface, ifdown says the interface does not exist and
ends.

upstart's network-interfaces job silently ends when the ifup fails. Why
are events for the lo interface issued from the network-interfaces job
directly, whereas for others, they are emitted from the subsidiary ifup
command's post script? This smacks of half baked patching on the fly.

The whole design philosophy of scripts that do not provide useful
exception reporting, of silent failure contributes to the unreliability
witnessed by the large number of bug reports pertaining to startup
functions migrated to upstart.

The time for robust logging to be included in upstart was before
migration, not afterwards. The greatest benefit in adequate logging
would be during migration in quickly identifying and rectifying
problems.

I have solved my problem by removing the "up mail-flush" command, but
the design philosophy / reliability issues are embedded in upstart /
linux.

this is anything to do with BIOS. If I was like you, I'd suggest that
"If you don't know what's Bios, get back to Windows. Or MacOS."

Meanwhile. I'll un-subscribe from this bug. Cheerio.

[Bug 832641] [NEW] cdc-acm modems do not work properly using 7E1 byte format

2011-08-24 Thread Owen Duffy
Public bug reported:

I have tried two apps (minicom and smsclient) with to ACM modems, and received
7E1 data does not have the parity bit stripped. I can check with STTY and it
shows parenb cs7 -parodd when the port is being used in 7E1 format, but the
received data has the parity bit passed through to the app.

[Bug 942115] [NEW] Screen freezes after typing first password character

2012-02-27 Thread David Owen
Public bug reported:

After the boot process finishes, I see the login box from lightdm. The
text cursor is blinking in the password box, the mouse cursor responds
to the mouse and touchpad, etc.

I type the first character of my password. The text cursor stops
blinking (so far, it always freezes *visible*). The mouse cursor moves
with the mouse, but nothing responds to clicks. I can switch VTs using
CTRL+ALT+F1 and so on, but no other key brings a response, even the
power key.

If I switch VTs away and back, the screen initially shows the lightdm
screen but redraws to solid aubergine, and is blank other than the mouse
cursor. The mouse cursor continues to track mouse movement, and VT
switching continues to work, but the X display remains unresponsive in
every other way.

For the past few days, this happens about 50% of login attempts. More
than a week ago, it never happened.

This is on Precise.

[Bug 888666] Re: terminal doesn't refresh properly with nvidia-current drivers

2012-01-21 Thread Owen Williams
I'm seeing this bug, and I see it in Konsole, not just gnome-terminal.
It makes the terminals nearly unusable. Also note these other bugs that
are duplicates: bug #876055 and bug #880695. It also isn't limited to
ubuntu:
http://lists.fedoraproject.org/pipermail/users/2011-November/407928.html
Just google "gnome-terminal repaint" and you'll see a lot of posts.

This has been reported enough that I'd say there's definitely a problem
with terminals and nvidia drivers. All of these bugs show no activity
whatsoever, but it's clearly a widespread problem that needs attention.
