[Bug 50558] Re: Lack of portmap makes nfs mounts slow

2007-04-29 Thread pete
My bad. Killed the portmap process and tried to mount another nfs share,
still seems to mount fine. I don't really know much about portmap, I'm
probably missing something here.

[Bug 80520] Re: azureus crashes when the network connection fails

2007-05-31 Thread PeTe
I found a "workaround" (if it can be called that way) by deleting the
~/.azureus directory, azureus starts normally. when you backup config files,
you shouldn't even loose your settings. unfortunately this solves the problem
just until next "unexpected error" ocurrs.
I am also using wifi, but it appeared once even when I was connected wired, so
I suppose this has nothing to do with that.

fine. If you view the attached image you can confirm that the relevant
boxes are unchecked, yet the network shares are still present on the
desktop.

[Bug 40119] Re: SPARC boot failed: Illegal Instruction

SunBlade 1500, OBP 4.17.1 gives the same errors reported by Patrick

That would be a good option, as it would be a useable substitution

future or unpatched themes for mythtv would still function correctly.

[Bug 229344] Re: Slow startup after upgrade to Ubuntu 8.04

2008-07-20 Thread Pete
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 201555 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/201555

I've found a way to make checkgmail load quickly again, but it's a bit
of a hack.

1. edit /usr/bin/checkgmail. Go to line 3088 and then delete all the Language
definitions, with the exception of the one that you want to keep (in my case,
English).
2. edit ~/.checkgmail/lang.xml. Do the same thing.

The only problem is that you need to re-do step 1 each time you download
a new version.

[Bug 195319] Re: firefox-3.0 crashes on icanhascheezburger.com

2008-06-03 Thread PeTe
Hi.. It was making problems in Gutsy + FF2.0.0.13, but when I was asked to
create the crash report using firefox2-dbg, I couldn't find this package. Then
I upgraded to Hardy and FF3b and I had no crash since then.. so this is not an
issue for me any more..
and the other answers for Alex's questions - I use flash (and have used with
FF2 as well), but the page doesn't contain any. It uses loads of javascript but
no flash. There is no sound on the website. I don't have libflashsupport
installed, unfortunatelly I cannot tell you, if I had it installed on Gutsy..
good luck

[Bug 268963] [NEW] focus does not return to desktop after opening and closing a file on it if anther window is open

2008-09-11 Thread pete
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Steps to reproduce:
- open a folder in nautilus and select a file
- with that window to the side, open a file on the desktop by double clicking
- close the open file
- hit delete

One would expect that the file on the desktop would be deleted, however
the selected file in the nautilus window is deleted as that window has
been given focus.

This is particularly confusing on themes such as Clearlooks that do not
provide a clear distinction on selected files in the active versus
inactive window.

[Bug 268963] Re: focus does not return to desktop after opening and closing a file on it if anther window is open

2008-09-16 Thread pete
I disagree that it's more likely what the user wants.

The focus is returned to the top most window (z order) rather than the
window that last had focus (desktop).

Take this use case:
1. user opens a file on the desktop to determine it's contents
2. they verify that the file is no longer needed and close the window
3. they hit delete to delete the file
4. instead some other random action occurs depending on what window is on top

In my case this caused data loss when I used shift-delete as I was
confident that I no longer needed an empty directory on my desktop, and
instead deleted a directory of files that I had been earlier working on
in an open nautilus window.

Perhaps this is a bug with metacity taking focus and z-order to be the
same thing.

[Bug 487695] Re: autoduplex constraints should be dropped

2014-02-12 Thread Pete
I have problems with lost margins printing to a new OfficeJet 6700 using
HPLIP version 3.14.1. Printing the test page on A4 paper during
installation of 3.14.1 gave correct results. After installation, I
changed the paper size from letter back to A4 and printed a test page.
The ruler at the bottom is missing (see bug 1276801 for details and a

There seem to be multiple reports of similar issues. Should these be
collected somewhere?

[Bug 1435035] [NEW] No Copy&Paste for wifi key possible .

2015-03-22 Thread Pete
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 14.10 (r20)

There is no chance to paste a long wpa key in the passphrase textfield for a
new AP.
Thats bad if you have a long passphrase like 63 signs.

If it has sth. to do with security, fine. But then remove the Show Key
Option too;-)

[Bug 1178693] Re: package samba4 4.0.0~alpha18.dfsg1-4ubuntu2 failed to install/upgrade: ErrorMessage: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 126

2013-05-13 Thread Pete
This bug may actually be worse than initially reported.
Following the next update installation the system starts up with the 'Operating
in low resolution' problem. I have been researching fixes for this but at the
moment the computer is unusable!
I cannot say for certain that the two are related but it seems to be more than
a coincidence?

[Bug 1178024] Re: Synaptic locks up during use

Hi I have the same problem pretty much as described here. Sometimes you
may be able to install a package before it freezes and some times it
freezes while searching.

I am running Ubuntu 13.04 x86_64 with Mate Desktop 1.6.0.

[Bug 1104476] Re: Network manager cannot connect to WPA2/PEAP/MSCHAPv2 network without CA_Certificate

2013-09-04 Thread Pete
I confirmed this is an issue for me as well. Worked fine in Ubuntu 12,
Ubuntu 13 fails to connect to any WPA security.

This line does NOT exist for me in /etc/NetworkManager/system-
connections/

"system-ca-certs=true"

Adding the line with "false" also does NOT resolve this issue for me.

"system-ca-certs=false"

So far I can only connect to networks which are not using WPA
personal/enterprise.

Please fix this bug.

Can confirm this, too, on Ubuntu 12.10. Copying works if I mount smb as
cifs, but using Nautilus it gets randomly stuck... (Only happend copying
large directories, in particular with many files, but maybe that just
raises the chance...)

[Bug 202391] Re: Cannot view AVM2 flash enabled pages

2012-06-11 Thread Pete
I would like to point out that here in the US the national weather service uses
AVM2 format for the in motion RADAR images.
This is important to lots of us in the midwest during tornado season so we can
watch the progress of a storm on the national wether service RADAR. Please
find a good fix for this.

[Bug 312462] Re: document_new_from_data() arg1 must be without null bytes

2012-07-17 Thread Pete
Ok,

as this bug is open for 4 years now, I spent the afternoon fixing it.
The solution was quite easy.

The auto generated wrapping from the .defs file is not sufficient. I
added a method to the .override file, which solves the problem.

The problem was, that the C function requires a char pointer (which is
not \x00 terminated) and the length. But the automatic mapping
interpreted it as a null terminated string and therefore threw a
TypeError (because pdf documents typically contain null bytes).

I fixed the mapping by changing "si" to "s#"
(http://docs.python.org/c-api/arg.html), which allows null bytes and
also renders the length parameter redundant. Therefore I removed it as
Benjamin suggested.

As this method probably never worked, there should be no fear to remove
the length parameter when thinking about backward compatibility.

Have a nice evening.

** Patch added: "Fixes the wrapped interface."

[Bug 1165080] [NEW] Ubuntu 12.04 X fails to start after kernel 3.2.0-39 update

2013-04-05 Thread Pete
Public bug reported:

Since kernel 3.2.0-39 update X.org fails to start with with following Fatal
Server Error:
[18.148] (EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.
[18.148]
Fatal server error:
[18.148] no screens found

Everything works as expected when I boot back to the 3.2.0-38 kernel
(previous version)

I have a Dell Presision M6700 with the AMD Radeon HD 7800M Series
graphics card.

I was using the ATI/AMD proprietary FLGRX Graphics driver (post-release
updates)
In testing I have switched the the ATI Fire GL driver and the (**experimental**
beta) driver with no change.

I have attached the X.org log for both the broken 3.2.0-39 configuration
and working 3.2.0-38 configuration.

** Affects: xorg-server (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

** Attachment added: "log when booting with kernel 3.2.0-39"

The attached output of cat /proc/meminfo directly before this bug occurs
shows, that there is enough memory available to save the whole system
memory to the swap partition. Why is the "not enough memory" error
displayed in this cases?

[Bug 268963] Re: focus does not return to desktop after opening and closing a file on it if anther window is open

2009-10-22 Thread pete
Yep, I guess this is the behaviour that I was reporting the initial bug
against. If I open a file on the desktop and then close that file, I
(personally) would expect focus to be given back to the desktop.

The problem is that focus is given to the highest (z-order) window,
rather than the most recent window (focus history).

Incidentally, what would the behaviour be for a window that was "always-
on-bottom"?

[Bug 1817228] Re: pip install scrapy and python -m pip install scrapy cause seg fault

2019-02-23 Thread Pete
I ran it with valgrind and turned binaries off for pip:

valgrind --log-file="scrapy-valgrind" --leak-check=yes pip install --no-
binary :all: --global-option build --global-option --debug scrapy

and it worked!

So this should work as well:

pip install --no-binary :all:

[Bug 1818352] [NEW] systemd-u+ running CPU at 99-100%

2019-03-02 Thread Pete
Public bug reported:

I upgraded to 18.10 and afterwards the fan was running constantly at
high speed. I looked it up and found a post where the user had a
similar problem, and the reply was to run top, so I did and systemd-u+
was using 99-100% CPU, causing the overheating. I turned it off using
the second answer here: https://askubuntu.com/questions/907246/how-to-
disable-systemd-resolved-in-ubuntu and it has gone away.

I edited etc/systemd/resolved.conf as the guy said, and just put my hub
ip in as the DNS and the internet works fine.

uname --all says: Linux 4.18.0-10-generic #11-Ubuntu SMP Thu Oct 11

[Bug 1727237] Re: systemd-resolved is not finding a domain

2018-04-25 Thread Pete
I freshly installed the latest Kubuntu Bionic nightly image from today
night. That should be rather close to tomorrow's release.

There systemd 237-3ubuntu10 is installed. However, it still does not
work. I can not resolve dns out of the box in my Hotel wifi (Quality
Hotel Augsburg, Germany).

The support of the hotspot provider forwarded me to this bug and assumed
it to be solved in 18.04.

[Bug 1766969] [NEW] DNS cannot be resolved in Hotel Hotspot

2018-04-25 Thread Pete
Public bug reported:

I was asked to create a new bug for this in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/systemd/+bug/1727237 as it
seems to be a different issue.

I have installed the nightly image of Kubuntu Bionic from 25th of April.

There systemd is in version 237-3ubuntu10.

When connecting to the wifi hotspot in my hotel (Quality Hotel Augsburg)
I cannot open the hotspot landing page that should give me access to the
WIFI. With Windows and on an Iphone it's working.

For the following distributions I can confirm it not working:
Kubuntu 17.10
Kubuntu 18.04 (nightly image 25th of April 2018)

The logs were taken on 18.04.

Workaround:
sudo systemctl disable systemd-resolved.service
sudo service systemd-resolved stop
sudo rm /etc/resolv.conf
sudo nano /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf
  >> add "dns=default" under [main]
sudo service network-manager restart

Then I can connect to the WIFI and I see the login page in Firefox.

To capture some data I did the following:
 - connect to Hotspot
 - enter golem.de

Case 1: Fresh default Kubuntu install
With a default Kubuntu install it does not work. I can connect to the WIFI and
get IP and DNS from DHCP but I cannot resolve any hostname. When trying to
open the router ip directly in the browser it forwards to hotsplots.de which
cannot be resolved.

Case 2: With aforementioned Workaround
I connect to the wifi, I open firefox and the login page shows up (if I havent
been connected yet. In the capture I already was able to connect to the hotspot
which allows immediately to connect to the webpage)

PS: I'll be in this hotel till Friday 27th if more information are
required.

[Bug 1786202] [NEW] 18.04LTS ubuntu kernel load error rf kill switch status

2018-08-09 Thread Pete
Public bug reported:

I've just done the upgrade from 16.04LTS to 18.04LTS and the system now
hangs on boot. Booting to recovery mode shows it now hangs at the "RF
Kill Switch Status" step.

If I enter debug mode and the perform a full boot it seems to miss this
step and the boot completes

I didn't have this problem with 16.04 and my PC doesn't have wifi.

[Bug 1727237] Re: systemd-resolved is not finding a domain

2018-01-31 Thread Pete
I too am still encountering this issue.

Since I can't resolve the webpage to the captive portal I have to
manually enter its IP 1.1.1.1

Then accept the agreement. However afterwards DNS still fails to resolve
web-pages.

Today I edited /etc/resolv.conf as before, adding Google DNS to show
this.

nameserver 127.0.0.53
nameserver 8.8.8.8

But I noticed resolving DNS was slow, because 127.0.0.53 was failing.
And after timing out it goes to the Google DNS 8.8.8.8.

After removing 127.0.0.53 in the file and only using "nameserver
8.8.8.8" everything works fine and quickly.

[Bug 608162] Re: GNOME Keyring Daemon stops panel's shutdown

2018-03-07 Thread Pete
Problem occurs 100% of the time on two Mint Cinnamon 64 bit machines
after the latest round of updates when shutting down or restarting from
whisker menu. 'shutdown (-r) now' works without an error.

The most commonly reported 'fix' for this problem is purging old
kernels. I just reinstalled 18.3 Cinnamon 64 from scratch on one and
then installed all the updates. There were only 2 kernels. I removed
4.10 4.13.0-36 is the only one installed. It did not fix the problem. I
did not have the problem before the last round of updates.

Also on another computer with 18.2 which has not been turned on for a while I
never had the problem until I just installed updates. It is using 4.10.0-33
kernel. 4.8.0.53, 4.10.0-33, and 4.13.0-36 are installed.

I had no problem with on two 18.3 XFCE 64 bit machines. One I last
used/updated Sunday 3/4 or another I just updated (including latest
kernel) as of 3/8/18 0245Z.

All computers are set for autologin. I tried turning autologin off on
one Cinnamon but that had no effect.

It appears there is something in the recent updates for Cinnamon that is
causing this problem.

[Bug 1630272] Re: The "Official Documentation" for Ubuntu 16.04 does not include correct instructions on installing Printers.

2016-11-16 Thread Pete
Hi Chris,

I went through your updated instructions. I deleted and reinstalled
printers on Ubuntu 16.04 system.

The updated instructions work fine, thanks! Following the procedure the
printer still has the Device URI error issue (character string). But
following your last bit below a user will quickly be able to now resolve
the issue.

Note: "If you've set up a network printer and it won't print, check the
Device URI field in the printer settings. It should display the
printer's IP address. If it doesn't then correct it."

I update my Device URI to the IP and print jobs now print successfully.

I will submit a new bug report for the printer installation wizard
creating the incorrect Device URI.

Thanks again!

Pete

[Bug 1642454] [NEW] Installing Network Printer via Add Printer wizard creates incorrect Device URI (Ubuntu 16.04)

2016-11-16 Thread Pete
Public bug reported:

Hello,

Installing a network printer in Ubuntu 16.04 appears to install the
incorrect Device URI.

Summary:
I am not sure how the Device URI is supposed to work in Ubuntu, but installing
the printer using the Ubuntu Add Printer wizard (GUI) a string of alpha
characters is entered. Users are unable to print. However, manually changing
this to the Printer IP address does allow printing to work.

I confirmed this issue with four separate machines all running clean
installations of Ubuntu 16.04 with no modifications, and updates
applied.

*Please see attached PDF with installation procedure and screenshots for
details.

--

Installation Example:

Example network printer: Brother DCP-L2540DW (Static IP: 192.168.1.20)

Procedure:
*Adding the printer: "Settings > Printer > Add"
*Select printer under "Network Printer", Host Name shows "BRN30055C829554".
*Complete installation after selecting an acceptable driver.
*Printer does NOT print. Printer Properties shows "Device URI":
"lpd://BRN30055C829554/BINARY_P1"
*Changing Device URI to printer IP (using "Change" option) corrects Device URI
to IP address "lpd://192.168.1.20/BINARY_P1"
*Printing is now successful.

[Bug 1642454] Re: Installing Network Printer via Add Printer wizard creates incorrect Device URI (Ubuntu 16.04)

2016-11-20 Thread Pete
Hello,

I have completed additional testing at an office. I wanted to test the
Ubuntu printer installation wizard on various printers. I completed
testing on three printer. All printed successfully. So I am thinking
this is an issue with Brother printers only.

I have attached a PDF with screenshots and details on the three printers
below. Each creates different Device URI's that don't appear related.
However they all seem to work just fine!

Printers Tested:

Dell S2815dn0
Lexmark C540CMD
Lexmark X658de

Printer: Dell S2815dn
IP: 192.168.1.22

[Bug 1642454] Re: Installing Network Printer via Add Printer wizard creates incorrect Device URI (Ubuntu 16.04)

2016-11-20 Thread Pete
Completed some further testing on a network with Brother Printer. I
confirmed the following results on two seperate Linux machines (laptop
over WiFi and Ethernet) and Desktop machine. Both had the same results.

Example network printer: Brother DCP-L2540DW (Static IP: 192.168.1.20)

There are two options to select when the Brother network printer is
detected (see my attached screenshots for examples).

The first option:
Shows HOST field “BRN30055C829554” and Queue: “BINARY_P1”.

This option STILL does not work for me, however if I change the Device
URI to the printer IP I can print successfully (as mentioned earlier).

However, the second option did not used to work either for me, but now
appears to work correctly! This method uses “IPP network printer via
DNS-SD” option does now appear to work (see screenshot below). I still
think the default selection (first option) needs resolved.

See below and attachment for details:

The first option:
Shows HOST field “BRN30055C829554” and Queue: “BINARY_P1”.

My printer driver (Brother DCP-L2540DW) is not shown. Driver chosen is
DCP-7045N driver (which also works) and click “Forward”. (See below)

Auto created Device URI:

“lpd://BRN30055C829554/BINARY_P1”

Second Option:
Using “IPP network printer via DNS-SD” option does now appear to work (see
below)!

Auto created Device URI:
"dnssd://Brother%20DCP-L2540DW%20series._ipp._tcp.local/?uuid=e3248000-80ce-11db-8000-30055c829554"

[Bug 1630272] [NEW] The "Official Documentation" for Ubuntu 16.04 does not include correct instructions on installing Printers.

2016-10-04 Thread Pete
Public bug reported:

The "Official Documentation" for Ubuntu 16.04 does not include correct
instructions on installing Printers.

Following the Official Documentation guides for Ubuntu 16.04 (see below)

Ubuntu 16.04 Official Printing Documentation
https://help.ubuntu.com/lts/ubuntu-help/printing.html

Ubuntu 16.04 Official Documentation:
https://help.ubuntu.com/lts/ubuntu-help/index.html

There is no Network Printer installation guide, but there should be. MOST
desktop users now use network printers at home, small offices, and companies.
Most printing in my experience is networked, not local. Most network printing
is IP based printing, and users in Windows and Mac can easily install a network
printer by providing its IP address and selecting the printer. Or installing
the driver, then selecting the printer when adding the network printer by IP.

Note: Many companies (and most home networks) use direct IP printing
from the client, and do not forward print jobs to a print server.

The Official Guide should include steps to clearly install a network
printer for Ubuntu Desktop via IP address.

I am reporting this here as the Official Doco pages state "To report
errors in this documentation, file a bug."

Thanks!

[Bug 1630272] Re: The "Official Documentation" for Ubuntu 16.04 does not include correct instructions on installing Printers.

2016-10-05 Thread Pete
One suggestion would be to change the link name in the page below from
"Set up a local printer" to "Set up a printer" (as you stated) in the
page below.

Ubuntu 16.04 Official Printing Documentation
https://help.ubuntu.com/lts/ubuntu-help/printing.html

And then in the subsequent page (for Setup a Printer) add different
sections. One for setting up a local printer (which you have already)
and another section for "Adding a Network Printer", and you can include
instructions to connect to a printer via IP address here (or CUPS, or
Windows printer server - SMB).

On this page:
https://help.ubuntu.com/lts/ubuntu-help/printing-setup.html

However please note, you may want to try these steps yourself first. I have
tried adding a network printer on three machines running 16.04 (fresh installs)
and all were confusing to me via the Add Printer GUI wizard.

Once I selected "Printers" > Add > Network Printer. It found my Brother
Printer, and I thought it installed fine. I went to print and it said my
printer could not be found. If found it when installing, but I think the
IP address was not specified, so it would not print to it later. I think
this is because the installation process the user follows needs changed
*(hence updated documentation).

I assume users are supposed to select "Printers" > Add > Network Printer
> "Find Network Printer" and in the "HOST" field enter the IP address of
your printer to get it to work. Is this correct? I have no idea because
the HOST name to me refers to the name on a network.

Since the GUI wizard is not clear on how to install a network printer
perhaps the Official documentation can but updated to compensate for
this.

I eventually got the printer installed on a couple machines, but I tried
a few things to get printer to point to the IP address.

[Bug 1630272] Re: The "Official Documentation" for Ubuntu 16.04 does not include correct instructions on installing Printers.

2016-10-05 Thread Pete
> I tried both methods, and they both found the printer. On my LAN my
Epson workforce pro 4530 is "epson-wp" at 192.168.111.110. However with
both methods it seemed to find and list it about 70 times.

Yes I have had similar issues when installing a network printer. I feel
installing the Network Printer in Ubuntu is rather 'messed up' as you said.
That is pretty accurate.

I wish there was a straight forward process of selecting a printer via
HOST, and pointing to a driver if needed (if your printer is not
listed), and then your done.

---

A few weeks ago I setup a Brother DCPL2540DW network printer (static IP
192.168.1.15), but the model was not listed in Ubuntu's Add-Printer. I
downloaded the print driver from Brothers website for Linux (they
provide Deb & RPM formats.

The Brother Driver Install Tool works beautifully. Its a small Bash
script you run, and it downloads & installed the print drivers (via deb)
for you. "The tool will install LPR, CUPSwrapper driver and scanner
driver (for scanner models)."

http://support.brother.com/g/b/downloadlist.aspx?c=us&lang=en&prod=dcpl2540dw_us_as&os=128

Following Brothers simple instructions on the download screen, you
select "Yes" for "Device URI" and you can specify the IP address *(See
below).

Note this installs the printer & scanner completely in Linux, and you
don't need to use the Add Printer option in Ubuntu at all. But this only
works if your printer vendors provides instructions to install their own
printer installation software.

It would be better though to simply install the printer using the Ubuntu
GUI as its designed.

Will you specify the Device URI? [y/N] ->Y

0: ipp
1: ipps
2: lpd
3: socket
4: beh
5: hp
6: https
7: ipp14

10: hpfax
11 (I): Specify IP address.

I found multiple duplicate bugs on this issue, and yes...wonder why its

[Bug 1726187] Re: After 17.04 -> 17.10 upgrade, wifi often freezes

2018-01-23 Thread Pete
I am also having issues with my WiFi connection dropping out, freezing,
etc.

I see other bugs reported as well for 17.10 / 18.04 Ubunutu.

I am using latest 17.10 build, clean install.
Laptop: Yoga 11e
Kernel: 4.13.0-21-generic
WiFi: Network controller: Intel Corporation Wireless 7265 (rev 61)

Occasionally it works when connecting, then stops.

What I find most peculiar is that I discovered the DNS appears to
intermittently stop while I am using the computer.

If I manually edit "/etc/resolv.conf" (which you shouldn't have to do),
and change "nameserver 127.0.0.53" to "nameserver 8.8.8.8".

Once saved everything works fine and is stable until the next reboot.

I don't think this is a driver/kernel issue, its almost like resolv.conf
is broken.

[Bug 1727237] Re: systemd-resolved is not finding a domain

2018-01-26 Thread Pete
I also have been experiencing this. Connecting to WiFi network that uses
any captive portal fails.

I dual boot with Windows, and everything is fine in Windows.

System:
Ubuntu 17.10 (Clean install)

Behavior:
After authenticating with the portal and connecting I cannot resolve DNS.

My work around (after a lot of digging) was to edit "/etc/resolv.conf"

And add "nameserver 8.8.8.8" (Google Public DNS)

So my nameserver looked liked:

nameserver 127.0.0.53
nameserver 8.8.8.8

I had to do this after every reboot obviously.

Also very peculiar:
I have been using this work-around every day since installing 17.10 one week
ago. However, I connected to a regular home WiFi network (non-captive portal)
fine last night. Then after returning to my work captive-portal WiFi network
its now connecting and resolving DNS successfully. Without having to update my
/etc/resolv.cong. I don't understand why...

Wanted to mention while searching forums and bug reports I came across
many reported bugs that are likely duplicates of this issue. Where users
are reporting spotty or intermittent WiFi issues etc. Many think its
kernel and driver issues, while this isn't the case.
