Pressing any key quickly enough starts the boot process successfully.

In win10, PC Health Check now qualifies the OS as ok to upgrade to
win11.

I created a new VM; installed win10 with TPM2.0, secure boot, and SATA
CDROM enabled from the start.

I got the same boot error.

Any suggestions?

P.S. The ISO file was downloaded from Microsoft and verified for SHA
sum.

Hi Lena,

Package ovmf is already installed.  It was probably installed by virt-
manager.

You will find attached 2 screenshots of ovmf and OVMF folders in the
system.

I added SATA CDROM 1 to the boot options as suggested.

I still get the win10 boot error (see attached).

Please bear in mind that I do not have win11.  I have win10 that cannot
upgrade to win11.

Are you suggesting I create a new VM, install win10 with TPM2.0, secure
boot, and SATA CDROM enabled from the start to test for successful boot?

The "boot error" is reproducible.

1. start Virtual Machine Manager
2. click on Open
3. this opens a window called win10 on QEMU/KVM
4. in this window (3.), click on Power on the virtual machine (black triangle 
pointing right)
5. you get the "boot error" in window (3.)

As for executing *.efi, which one would you suggest from the attached
screenshot?

First, TPM settings were added to the windows VM. They worked fine.

Second, Secure Boot code was added to the xml. It caused the windows
boot error.

I implemented your 2 code additions separately.

First, TPM code was added to the xml.  It worked fine.

Second, Secure Boot was added to the xml.  It caused the windows boot
error.

As best as I can recall, you only need to input CPU (8), RAM (8192 MiB),
and disk (50 GiB).

both flash drives are defective and have agreed to replace them.

During the course of further Kubuntu 21.10 testing today to answer
Sandisk support questions, the following new behaviours appeared:

- the Sandisk Extreme Pro 256 GB USB stick no longer triggers the error popup 
window
- the mount popup window no longer appears
- the dolphin file manager does display the flash drive and its contents

This test was repeated with 2 other flash drives with the following results:
- the mount popup window no longer appears
- the dolphin file manager does display the flash drive and its contents

These tests were then repeated on all 7 other (total 8) USB type A ports
with identical results.

During a run of Software Updater, got this error.

Ubuntu 20.04 fully patched once daily.

Linux kernel updated from 5.4 to 5.8 in this run of Software Updater.

VirtualBox was NOT a product being updated according to the list in
Software Updater.

When asked to restart, the system took abnormally long to complete the
task.

I had to end the nautilus process in System Monitor.

The power down button in the upper right corner of the desktop did not
work.  No response at all.

I had to issue the reboot command from terminal.

Upon reboot, everything was back to normal.

By the way, the power down button does not work at all from the user
list you get just after each boot.  This is reproducible across several
boot sessions.

On a prior OS (16.04 or 18.04, cannot remember which) the following

rsync -v -a -r -W -p -o -g -t --delete --stats ~/Pictures /media/$USER
/USB-128GB-1/ >bkp_log

would only send differences on subsequent runs with a fat32 USB key.

Your test above seems to indicate that subsequent runs on 19.04 send
everything for vfat.

Therefore, my initial test on 19.04 must have been a fat32 USB key and
not a LUKS/ext4 USB key.

Please close this case if you are satisfied with these explanations.

A real world case of ~/ as source.

Both cases work as expected on an LUKS encrypted ext4 USB key.

copies all contents of home folder each time it is run.

The expectation is that only changed files will be copied and replaced
on the target.

This is reproducible.

When I log in to my (regular user) account early morning, the Switch
User menu item is not present.

When I log out late in the evening, the Switch User menu item is
present.

This is reproducible day in, day out.

This is the case even on days when there are no system updates or
upgrades at all.

edit /etc/gdm3/custom.conf and uncomment the line:

   #WaylandEnable=false

Then reboot.  This solves the problem.

THE BAD NEWS:

With WaylandEnable=false active in /etc/gdm3/custom.conf, the system
monitor does not launch.

I have never installed proprietary Nvidia drivers.

Ubuntu 19.04 was installed with default options.

That said, there is an app called "NVIDIA X Server Settings" on my
system which claims that my NVIDIA Driver Version: 418.56 (see
screenshot)

This was installed automatically by Ubuntu so I expect that 418.56 is
not proprietary.

Please clarify.

Not possible.

This is the boot process:
1. push power button
2. type in decryption password
3. hit enter
4. you immediately receive the Ubuntu splash screen
5. more and more (but not all) red dots appear
6. system hangs at 3 or 4 red dots

It is not possible to act between steps 3 and 4.

I have a fully duplicate backup test machine that manually mirrors my
main machine.

After the very first boot failure, I ported ALL the backup data to the
test machine from which all these notes are coming.

To reproduce all of the prior stated issues, I had to reinstall a new
19.04 from USB key.

There is nothing to recover, for me at least.

You are welcome to propose various tests on the failed machine.

I tried to boot holding the left shift key but I did not get grub2.  I did get

The system is unusable.

When doing a fresh install from a USB key to reproduce this bug, you
should be offered to erase or install alongside the existing OS.  In
this case, you are ONLY offered to erase.  Curious.

The system update is performed as follows:
1- software updater
2- reboot
3- repeat steps 1-2 until there are no more updates
4- synaptic package upgrader
5- reboot

The boot failure occurs on step 5.  This is reproducible.

Here is a screenshot of the synaptic upgrader candidates.  One or more
of these is causing the boot failure.

On Jun 3 2019, the system update corrupts the system.  It will not boot.
It hangs on the 3rd red dot of the Ubuntu splash screen.  The remaining
2 dots are white.  You never get the terminal screen with green [ ok]

the corruption and boot failure.

When the issue occurs, there may not be any system response at all.

Based on the size of the file, I assume it is cumulative over several
boots.

I am including this file now in the hopes you can successfully mine it
for your desired info.

When I was running 16.04.0 with the same mods described in comment 3 and
with the same monitor BUT with an older computer, I never got this
problem.

When I installed 16.04.5 (new install, erasing everything) on a newer
computer BUT with the same monitor, I started getting this issue.

The problem has just occurred in a Chrome browser gmail window while
composing a new mail.

In mid composition, I left my computer to attend to other matters.

When I came back, the screen was locked.

Typing the password clearly revealed the plain text in the body of the
email, minus the first character.

The bug was reproducible yesterday and was experienced previously.

Today, after booting from last night's shutdown, the problem is no
longer manifesting itself.

Note that Unity has been removed in favour of Gnome3 as per the
following procedure:

sudo apt-get install gdm3
sudo dpkg-reconfigure lightdm
sudo reboot
sudo apt-get remove unity
sudo apt-get remove lightdm
sudo apt-get remove ubuntu-desktop

Docky is now the launcher.

I am booting from a USB key into RAM.  That boot fails as per
screenshots.

Power source and storage are immaterial.

This is not an Acer issue.

To all, could it be UEFI related?  I tried to disable this in BIOS, but

As per comment #9, I can no longer test this issue.

If you can reproduce this bug report by changing login options and then
"fix" by changing those options back, then please close this case.

I burned to USB the current daily build of 18.04 and booted successfully
3 times.

The machine that was booted had 18.04 beta installed on the hard drive.

Grub (and everything else) has changed in the 6 years since this bug
report.

This bug has been fixed.
