[Bug 403680] [NEW] Keyboard layout during install is not used after install

2009-07-23 Thread phenest
Public bug reported:

Karmic alpha 3 Ubuntu

Selecting UK Dvorak keyboard layout works during install, but does not
get used as part of the installation. The installed OS only has Qwerty
setup for everything, i.e, login, console, apps, etc. It has to be setup
manually.

[Bug 267495] Re: Dell Precision M90 hotkeys not working

2009-02-15 Thread phenest
Amazingly, they work again flawlessly! And here's why/how...

I deleted all the hidden files from the /home folder and reinstalled
Intrepid. Et voila! I haven't done any updates yet, but I've never had
the media buttons working in Intrepid before. Until now. Both Rhythmbox
and Totem respond perfectly.

Go figure.

My laptop is a Dell Precision M90 which is actually an XPS M1710 but
designed for the business market (aesthetic changes). It normally ships

looks like we all use the same laptop and the same video card. I haven't

A further thought is the 'residual config' that Synaptic provides. This

[Bug 350956] [NEW] Rename Computer Janitor

2009-03-29 Thread phenest
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: computer-janitor

'Computer Janitor' makes it sound a very general application, and gives users
the idea that it should do other things, such as empty the recycle bin.
Computer Janitor is a very specific application that deals with unwanted
packages only.
I Suggest renaming it to 'Package Janitor'. There are probably others too. I
think this is much more descriptive and there would be less confusion.

[Bug 378325] Re: X login screen volume always set to max; crazy loud

2009-08-04 Thread phenest
Despite it being an 'alsa thing', it can be amended by the Ubuntu devs. The
alsa file in question is /etc/init.d/alsa-utils. Line 143 has the function
'sanify_levels_on_card' where it can be clearly seen the levels are at 80%. I
have demonstrated to myself, with a custom Live CD, that reducing these levels
(master or pcm) does reduce the volume.
Either that, or the devs could simply disable the sound effects.

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Change the gconf setting /apps/nautilus/preferences/show_desktop to
false, and nautilus hangs. All I get is a busy cursor on the desktop,
and I can't open any file manager windows with nautilus. CPU usage goes
up, but nothing shows in top. Change the setting back to true, and all
is well.

The window list on the gnome panel will fill up with buttons showing
Nautilus as 'starting'. Setting show_desktop=true again, and all those
buttons disappear.

After setting showdesktop back to true, all my volumes have been
mounted.

This was tested with alpha 4 Live CD.

[Bug 410948] Re: Volume too loud

2009-08-15 Thread phenest
Karmic alpha 4
I'm finding the same as Taylor. I have a Dell Precision M90 laptop with an LFE
channel (sub-woofer). Watching alsamixer, I see that PCM goes up first,
followed by LFE, followed by Master. I won't allow anything else. Using the
volume hotkeys gives the same results. This means my sub-woofer is at full
volume before the main speakers start to do anything.

A fresh install of Karmic alpha 3 shows all the channels working
independently in alsamixer. So there has been an update since then that
has broken it.

[Bug 413971] [NEW] Cursor jumps to top-left of screen using tilt wheel on mouse

Public bug reported:

Karmic alpha 4
Linux testing 2.6.31-5-generic #24-Ubuntu SMP Sat Aug 1 12:47:58 UTC 2009

I have a bluetooth Kensington Si670m mouse with a tilt wheel. This works
perfectly in Jaunty, but has never worked in Karmic since alpha 1. The
horizontal scrolling does appear to work, but the cursor immediately
jumps to the top-left of the screen. I have seen, on rarer occasions,
this behaviour from just moving the cursor around. But it does do it

The only fix that works is the one given by Markus. Otherwise, yes, go
back to Hardy.

2008-11-21 Thread phenest
I'm running nVidia beta driver 180.06, and I have not seen any
artefacts. Seeing as this is an nVidia issue and not an AWN issue, it is
safe to say that this is fixed if you use this driver version.

It happened to me within 5 minutes. This is getting infuriating. My card

I wish I could change to a different brand, but I'm stuck with nVidia

[Bug 267495] Re: Dell Precision M90 hotkeys not working

2008-12-17 Thread phenest
I'm currently running Intrepid with latest updates and Rhythbox is
responding. Even the mute button is working. I do find, however, that a
simple press (enough for the button backlight to come on), is not always
enough. A slightly longer press is required, but they will work.

I will test with some other apps, both Gnome and 3rd party.

[Bug 163345] Re: TI PCI1620 SD card reader not working

2007-11-20 Thread phenest
I have done some research and found this:
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HARDWARE_Texas_Instruments_PCI1620_Cardbus_Controller_with_a_4_in_1_memory_card_reader

It mentions:
"Pata driver (works only with kernel >=2.6.22) is basically the pata_pcmcia.c
module available in the vanilla kernel with the data transfer function
customized to perform the transfer on 8 bits instead of the default 16 bits
(the only problem that prevents pata_pcmcia to work with this device)."

So it would seem the existing driver could work if this fix was
implemented, somehow.

I have not been able to try this as my knowledge in compiling drivers in
Linux is limited.

[Bug 152537] Re: After update from Feisty to Gutsy RC, print jobs fail: "/usr/lib/cups/backend/mfp failed"

2007-11-27 Thread phenest
I have a Compaq TC1100 tablet running Gutsy and a Dell Precision M90
running Gutsy. My printer is a HP Deskjet 460 connected via bluetooth,
but I can only print from the tablet. The Dell will only print if I use
the 'sudo aa-complain cupsd' method. The Dell is running 64 bit whereas
the tablet is 32 bit. I haven't checked but I'm guessing the hplip is
not as up-to-date on the 64 bit Ubuntu.

The 32 and 64 bit DO have different versions of HPLIP. 32 has 2.7.10,

[Bug 179213] WiFi light/kill switch non-operational - Signal drops and won't reconnect

2007-12-29 Thread phenest
Public bug reported:

Dell Precision M90 - ipw3945 - Gutsy upgraded to Hardy alpha 2

I have always had a problem with WiFi disconnecting and then
reconnecting as if due to inactivity. But with Hardy alpha 2, it won't
reconnect.

Also, the kill switch seems to do nothing and the WiFi light does not
light up at all. - This only relates to Hardy alpha 2. Feisty and Gutsy
work fine.

Booting with Hardy's kernel gives an ACPI error just before the boot
splash, but disappears too quickly to read it. Does not happen with
previous kernels.

That's quite an old bug. I haven't had any issues with Sound Juicer
until Hardy.

To reproduce: Open Sound Juicer - Edit>Preferences. Simple as that.
Sound Juicer just simply quits.

I have all the latest updates (19/3/08) but I haven't seen an update to
Sound Juicer for some time (if ever).

Yes, I have version 2.22.0 and exactly the same problem.

It also gives exactly the same crash report.

This is not a fresh install of Hardy alpha 6, but has been progressively
upgraded from alpha 4 (which was a fresh install). Does that make a
difference? I haven't tried the Live CD.

[Bug 206870] [NEW] Gnome Do has visual problems when run with Metacity's compositing manager

2008-03-25 Thread phenest
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: metacity

Hardy Heron
2.6.24-12-generic x86_64 kernel
metacity 2.22.0
gnome-do 0.4.0.1-0ubuntu1

When Gnome Do first starts, it does not appear immediately. In order to
'force' it to appear, type a random key, and repeatedly press the Up or
Down cursor key until it appears. After that, Gnome Do will appear when
invoked. Even then, the drop-down list window does not always appear.
This only happens when using the Metacity compositing manager, and does
not happen when using Compiz.

[Bug 163345] Re: TI PCI1620 SD card reader not working

Unfortunately I do not own the computer that had this hardware,
therefore I cannot do any testing. I will try to contact some users I
know that may be able to do the necessary testing.

[Bug 206870] Re: Gnome Do has visual problems when run with Metacity's compositing manager

2008-03-26 Thread phenest
Sorry. One thing I forgot to mention. This only happens if I'm running
Avant-Window-Navigator. If I kill AWN, Gnome Do works perfectly. If I
run Compiz instead of Metacity, then Gnome Do works fine with AWN. But
Gnome Do exhibits this odd behaviour if I'm running Metacity and AWN.

I can confirm this is now working in Hardy Heron AMD64.

[Bug 206870] Re: Gnome Do has visual problems when run with Metacity's compositing manager

2008-07-28 Thread phenest
Now running Metacity 2.23.55 in Intrepid.

If using AWN, the AWN bar would actually disappear until Gnome-Do
'settled'. This no longer happens, but Gnome-Do still requires some
coaxing to appear the first time or two.
