I've identified the cause. Would you believe it. I was caused by having seconds displayed in the clock. Well seeing as this laptop is not my main machine and for the sake of it here's what I did. Opened synaptic and brought up the 5 broken packages and marked them for removal one by one starting at the bottom, Then marked all upgrade and it's sorted now. I reinstalled docvert that got removed in the process. indicator-datetime crashes on every boot up. Apport catches it and I let it send in a report each time. This borked my desktop. No unity. I had to uninstall nvidia-310 and kernel 3.8.0-17 then reboot with old kernel. Still no unity. I just zsynced the daily live 64 bit iso and burnt to usb. nVidia 8600GT booted fine. Today with up to date ISO. nVidia 8600GT Booting starts. I get an error about video mode. Space to continue or scan produce same results. Plymouth looks great in correct resolution then garbage desktop. Multicoloured pixels. Launcher is there as it top panel but no mouse pointer but mouse is there. Rebooting and using nomodeset works and desktop appears but is very sluggish and compiz crashes. As a workaround renaming/etc/fonts/conf.d/90-fonts-nanum.conf to backup enables update-notifier to run. Also the /etc/xdg/autostart/update-notifier.desktop file seems corrupted. It got attached to this report via ubuntu-bug. @Dmole. In my case the device is a little 4 gig USB stick. You cannot test that internally. This bug has been a bain for years. The copy starts good then progressively slows down to a crawl as has been reported many times. In windows this does not happen. Therefore kernel maybe reason If you have a test for me to do on my USB stick I'm more than willing to participate. I even tried the mainlone kernel once. I've just tested this in Precise. Copy and pasting a 734MB iso from internal drive to second internal drive took less than ten seconds. Copying same iso to 4gig usb stick started of well at about 15mb/sec and has now slowed to 2.8mb/sec The copy is still not finished as I write this. I'ts taken about 3 mins to copy the iso to usb. 11.10 clean install. Sporadically takes ages to shutdown and sometimes never. Plymouth just displays progress dots. Tried this and it seem to make shutdown much faster. Yep as in post 2. Make a change in settings then quit using the X flake window button. Change does not get saved. 11.10 64 bit clean install. This is still not fixed /usr/bin/canberra-gtk-play is not looking in /usr/share/sounds/ubuntu/stereo/ it is still looking in /usr/share/sounds/. Post #4 is spot on copying the file over fixes this but this needs to corrected in the canberra-gtk-play source. Strangely the guest account works fine. The status of this bug cant be changed.
