[Bug 1242749] Re: Synaptic and terminal showing upgradable packages but nothing in software updater

Brian,

Thanks for the explanation in the link. I had known about phased updates
but exactly sure of the precise mechanism.

Although the bug is marked correctly as wont fix would it not be helpful
for update-manager to display a short message regarding this? As opposed
to just saying "system up to date".

I've identified the cause.

Would you believe it. I was caused by having seconds displayed in the
clock. Unchecking seconds stopped the high cpu activity as evolution-

I'm now interested in the bug fix!

[Bug 1202653] Re: package apache2 2.4.4-6ubuntu4 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2013-07-19 Thread philinux
Well seeing as this laptop is not my main machine and for the sake of it
here's what I did.

Opened synaptic and brought up the 5 broken packages and marked them for
removal one by one starting at the bottom,

Then marked all upgrade and it's sorted now.

I reinstalled docvert that got removed in the process.

I'm sure there's a more elegant solution to this bug.

[Bug 1000182] Re: indicator-datetime shows all-day events one day too early

2012-10-15 Thread philinux
Just seen this bug. With London England birthdays were showing up a day
early. Changing to rekjavik solves the problem.

It may be due to British summertime. I'll check end of this month when
clocks go back to GMT

[Bug 1043518] Re: live cd is unusable due to video degradation

2012-09-13 Thread philinux
Today with up to date ISO.

nVidia 8600GT

Booting starts. I get an error about video mode. Space to continue or
scan produce same results. Plymouth looks great in correct resolution
then garbage desktop. Multicoloured pixels. Launcher is there as it top
panel but no mouse pointer but mouse is there.

Rebooting and using nomodeset works and desktop appears but is very
sluggish and compiz crashes.

I would not install using this.

I then ran sudo fc-cache -f -v which is why I reduced the errors to just
the /etc/fonts/conf.d/90-fonts-nanum.conf errors.

As a workaround renaming/etc/fonts/conf.d/90-fonts-nanum.conf to backup
enables update-notifier to run.

Also the /etc/xdg/autostart/update-notifier.desktop file seems
corrupted. It got attached to this report via ubuntu-bug.

[Bug 1020512] [NEW] Assistive Technologies is spamming .cache with many folders like at-spi2-AYBRGW for example

2012-07-03 Thread philinux
Public bug reported:

Two processes are running, at-spi2-registryd and at-spi-bus-launcher,
even though I've unticked AT-SPI D-Bus instartup apps.

I've uninstalled all but at-spi2-core and the spamming continues. Even
after killing the above to processes. So I'm guessing dbus must be
involved. Please feel free to change the package for the bug.

The contents of all the folders contain 1 file named socket of 0 bytes.

File recovery is one use. http://askubuntu.com/questions/78691

But if you google gksu nautilus live cd you will see the scale of it.
There are masses of tutorials that recommend its use. I just assumed all

Here's a link to the thread and a video of this in ubuntuforums.org.

Same thing happens on 64 bit.

Focusing on Firefox then nautilus causes same behaviour of redrawing
nautilus columns etc.

[Bug 500069] Re: USB file transfer causes system freezes; ops take hours instead of minutes

2012-04-04 Thread philinux
@Dmole.

In my case the device is a little 4 gig USB stick. You cannot test that
internally.

This bug has been a bain for years. The copy starts good then
progressively slows down to a crawl as has been reported many times.

In windows this does not happen. Therefore kernel maybe reason

If you have a test for me to do on my USB stick I'm more than willing to
participate.

I even tried the mainlone kernel once. As suggested a while back in this
bug.

[Bug 500069] Re: USB file transfer causes system freezes; ops take hours instead of minutes

2012-04-04 Thread philinux
I've just tested this in Precise. Copy and pasting a 734MB iso from
internal drive to second internal drive took less than ten seconds.

Copying same iso to 4gig usb stick started of well at about 15mb/sec and
has now slowed to 2.8mb/sec

The copy is still not finished as I write this. I'ts taken about 3 mins
to copy the iso to usb.

System does not freeze though.

Ok here's a patch. I've used the livecd to add askubuntu.com and

This belongs in the archive /usr/lib/firefox-11.0/omni.ja thanks.

be very confusing to new users.

I activated it via myunity 3.0.

It seems to need clicking twice to get it to work.

[Bug 762203] Re: Computer is not turned off at shutdown

2011-11-20 Thread philinux
11.10 clean install.

Sporadically takes ages to shutdown and sometimes never. Plymouth just
displays progress dots.

Tried this and it seem to make shutdown much faster. Add this line, stop on
runlevel [06], to this file.
gksu gedit /etc/init/network-manager.conf

# network-manager - network connection manager
#
# The Network Manager daemon manages the system's network connections,
# automatically switching between the best available.

description "network connection manager"

start on (local-filesystems
and started dbus)
stop on stopping dbus
stop on runlevel [06]
expect fork
respawn

exec NetworkManager

Yep as in post 2. Make a change in settings then quit using the X flake
window button. Change does not get saved. If you quit with File > Quit
it gets saved.

[Bug 310199] Re: [oneiric] canberra-gtk-play --id="desktop-login" Failed to play sound: File or data not found

2011-11-06 Thread philinux
11.10 64 bit clean install.

This is still not fixed /usr/bin/canberra-gtk-play is not looking in
/usr/share/sounds/ubuntu/stereo/ it is still looking in
/usr/share/sounds/.

Post #4 is spot on copying the file over fixes this but this needs to
corrected in the canberra-gtk-play source.

Strangely the guest account works fine.

The status of this bug cant be changed. At least by me anyway.
