[Bug 223656] Re: RTL8102EL NIC chip cause Ubuntu 8.04 LiveCD boot up fail fail

2008-06-19 Thread plovell
Hi Steve,

my failure on the Dell Vostro is with the ide drivers. Adding
"all_generic_ide" in grub allows the system to run. Of course, the
LiveCD won't boot.

Thanks.Peter

[Bug 223656] Re: RTL8102EL NIC chip cause Ubuntu 8.04 LiveCD boot up fail fail

2008-06-18 Thread plovell
Three or four times ! That's good. I think I might have had a successful
restore once. Certainly not more.

I tried it yesterday with the all_generic_ide fix to see if that helped.

Nah. Reloaded all the pages and then froze at "Suspending console(s)"

This is the Dell Vostro 200, by the way.

[Bug 223656] Re: RTL8102EL NIC chip cause Ubuntu 8.04 LiveCD boot up fail fail

2008-06-16 Thread plovell
The image from I
downloaded this morning does NOT solve the problem. I tried to boot as
LiveCD and it arrived at busybox. This is a Dell Vostro 200 (SATA disk,
SATA DVD, no floppy, Core 2 Duo)

[Bug 222176] Re: initramfs error/problem ubuntu 8.04

2008-06-15 Thread plovell
I'm having the same problems with a Dell Vostro 200 (Core 2 Duo 2.2GHz).

LiveCD x86 drops to busybox
LiveCD 64 drops to busybox
Alternate CD x86 install fine, restart drops to busybox

The "all_generic"ide" option for grub make things work.

This system has SATA disk and SATA DVD - no PATA/IDE at all. No floppy
either, although it does have media reader for memory cards etc.

I don't know any way to capture the boot-time messages when we get to
busybox. I have other hardware here (Macs mostly) but not much
experience with Linux internals such as these. If someone can point me
the way to save messages I'd be happy to get them and add to here.

There is one message in the failure that also appears in the success, so I have
it. It happens just before the "unhappy" messages in the failure case, so I
suspect it may be significant. It says
[ 64.530772] Driver 'sd' needs updating - please use bus_type methods
There's also one in the success case a few lines further down that says
sda: <4>Driver 'sr' needs updating - please use bus_type methods

In the failure case, the SATA drive is being handled as ATA/IDE and
various speeds are attempted. It starts as 133, then tries 100, 66 and
finally 33.

[Bug 223656] Re: RTL8102EL NIC chip cause Ubuntu 8.04 LiveCD boot up fail fail

2008-06-11 Thread plovell
I'm also having problems on a Vostro 200. It worked OK for a while
(several weeks, occasional usage) but has now become unbootable.

During the attempt, it drops to BusyBox but still keeps trying,
producing lots of errors (but I'm not familiar with how to save them --
maybe a digital camera of the screen will help). It reports a failure in
initramfs, with messages about ata1:00 and so on.

The system is standard from Dell -- 2 GB RAM, no floppy, media readers
(SD cards etc). On-board NIC, no wireless or PCI cards.

I saw a suggestion to adjust the grub boot with "all_generic_ide" and
this allows it to boot and run fine.

The alternate installer installs fine, but the reboot fails.

The standard installer fails.

The live-CD mode also fails.

This is not a very active system so I can try stuff on it if you wish.

[Bug 32123] Re: initramfs not generated correctly on dist-upgrade

2008-06-10 Thread plovell
On another forum, I found detail on a workaround
 near the end.

In grub, replace "quiet splash" with "all_generic_ide", and once the
system is up, do likewise in /boot/grub/menu.lst

See that post for details if this is unfamiliar.

[Bug 32123] Re: initramfs not generated correctly on dist-upgrade

2008-06-10 Thread plovell
I'm having the same issue with a Vostro 200. Weird thing is that it
worked fine for a while (couple of weeks, occasional use) but now is
completely hosed.

LiveCD won't boot (disk has fresh install of Vista - it's 160GB).

Alternate installer CD installs fine (to a different disk, complete
erase-and-install) but then the boot fails in the same way.

But this *used* to work on this exact box. The disk I mention just above
is the one that the original installation was on to!

This machine has no floppy, and I've disabled it in the BIOS. Is there
anything else in BIOS that might be causing this?
