[Bug 806962] [NEW] Pinch to zoom and other Multitouch features not working.
Public bug reported: Hi I have a Synaptics touchpad which supports three finger tapping, pinch to zoom and circular scroll (rotate finger right to scroll down, rotate left to scroll up etc.), but none of these feature currently work in Ubutnu. Since they are features that have now been around for a very long time, I am curious if these are issues that will ever be fixed? Particularly the lack of pinch to zoom on on Websites and other applications that require reading is quite primitive, as I am a disabled person with poor vision and this facility is much easier and more convenient that the built in 'magnifying glass' solution that simply zooms everything. Two finger scrolling and tapping does work though, but that is the only features that are enabled. I believe these omissions are now serious enough to be considered a bug. ** Affects: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/806962 Title: Pinch to zoom and other Multitouch features not working. Same problem here. 32 Bit Ubuntu. Even after installing all missing codecs and plugins - or at least those I could find in the repositories. [Bug 146692] Re: Gutsy will not boot on Samsung Q45 laptops
I just installed the final release of Hardy Heron and I can confirm that I still have to boot with the acpi= off option. Everything else seems to work OK. (Except most of the FN keys don't work and sometimes the cursor leaps randomly to a different line when I'm typing). But not having any acpi really sucks. [Bug 38821] Re: kwallet will not allow me *not* to use it
I have the same problem. Kwallet is worse than Windows UAC. Every time I start my PC (Kubuntu 7.10) it asks for the password just so I can enable my WAN. My WAN requests the password from it to start. I wish it would just die or go away or whatever. If I disable it, my WAN refuses to start. (So I don't have an option but to keep it). I never enabled it. [Bug 77062] synaptic
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: synaptic Hi when using the latest version of Synaptic available in Feisty, Synaptic only shows about 20% of my installed files. Also searching Synaptic for software again only shows about 20% of the software available on my preferred repositories. It seems synaptic is ignoring all of my additional 'universe' etc type repositories - even though I have these clearly enabled in my sources.list and in synaptic settings. I prefer synaptic to adept as I have been using it for several years and it allows me to the facility to pin packages and to upgrade or downgrade, or choose alternate versions - which adept does not appear to do. ** Affects: synaptic (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed ** Tags added: feisty synaptic -- synaptic https://launchpad.net/bugs/77062 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 77059] Re: MP3 Support is Broken In Feisty
Hi I can confirm that it is the Xine Engine that is broken in this case. Building Debs via Alien of daily (unofficial) Suse RPMs of both libxine1-1.1.4-061204 and the respective w32codec-0.52-1.i386 package resolves the problem. It is however still not an ideal scenario as these are clearly non native packages and could result in conflicts at some near point in the future. -- MP3 Support is Broken In Feisty https://launchpad.net/bugs/77059 -- kubuntu-bugs mailing list kubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/kubuntu-bugs
[Bug 77059] MP3 Support is Broken In Feisty
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: kaffeine Hi when I first installed Ubuntu Breezy 6.10 one of the first things I did was run automatix and install all of the required win32 codecs and so on. After doing this I was able to play MP3's normally. However after a recent batch of updates, both Amarok and Kaffeine have suddenly decided to stop playing MP3's. The only common thread I can find between them is the xine engine - so I can only assume that MP3 support in the included xine-engine in Ubuntu has been disabled (as is the case on Suse). The question is how do I re-enable it? I would try automatix again, however since originally installing Breezy 6.10, I have now upgraded to the Feisty repositories and now automatix will no longer run and it claims it is not compatible with that version of Ubuntu. Something else that is odd that I noticed too however is that many KDE specific apps have stopped being able to play MP3's, like Amarok, Kaffeien, Kaboodle and so on - and I can no longer sample/preview MP3 music files in konqueror either - but all non KDE specific apps can still play MP3's - such as XMMS, Real Player, MPlayer and so on. So this seems to be related specifically to KDE somehow. I have followed all of the guides (including this guide here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats) for enabling MP3 support in Amarok - and when I try to play and MP3 file Amarok offers to enable MP3 support - but after offering to do so when I click on "yes" it crashes and MP3 support is not enabled. I also tried following the manual guide on the Wiki for enabling MP3 support in Amarok/Kaffeine but still to no effect. I installed (and reinstalled) libxine-extracodecs and was still unsuccessful in enabling MP3 support. I have tried upgrading and downgrading both Kaffeine and Amarok - but again to no effect. I also have the latests Win32 codecs installed. Currently MP3 support appears to be broken for all of my KDE related apps. ** Affects: kaffeine (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed ** Tags added: amarok feisty kaffeine xine -- MP3 Support is Broken In Feisty https://launchpad.net/bugs/77059 -- kubuntu-bugs mailing list kubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/kubuntu-bugs

This is due to an incorrect fb driver choice on the grub command line and also due to incorrect parameters. However only by using a vga= entry will the user be able to access a terminal, or to view terminal messages in the normal/expected way. Specifying Vesafb is also helpful as it helps stop the system from defaulting to some non functional fb drivers. Unfortunately my issue cannot be resolved in this way as I have a 15.4 inch wide screen display 1280x800 - and no current versa driver currently can use this configuration. 1024x768 should look OK however - unfortunately though the included Usplash theme is incorrectly formated for this resolution also, so it looks squashed and moved off to to one side. The result is that Uspash is not currently compatible with my system. During setup there should be an option to specify your resolution (and perhaps your ATI, Nvidia/intel video driver too (as these are the most common) and have Usplash configure itself accordingly. ** Tags added: feisty usplash -- Usplash prevents/blocks TTY/Terminal Access https://launchpad.net/bugs/76831 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Edited for clarity. ** Description changed: Hi sorry to report this as a bug - but I don't know any other way this it has any chance of ever being resolved. Firstly let me say that this is not a typical n00b rant - I have been a Linux user at home for 6+ years and am well aware of all of the familiar arguments concerning the need to apply pressure on manufacturers to - provide appropriate support - about the fact that it is very difficult - to make any progress without that support and so on - as well as the + provide appropriate support, about the fact that it is very difficult to + make any progress without that support and so on, as well as the generally eternally optimistic hope that somehow some day this situation - improve of it's own accord. [Bug 76338] Linux Restricted modules 2.6.20-2 are incompatable with X4000 Mobility.
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: linux-restricted-modules-2.6.20-2-generic Hi I am writing to report that the FGLRX ATI drivers included in the linux-restricted modules package are incompatible with Radeon mobility (laptop) chipsets. This isn't just restricted to the 2.6.20-2 restricted modules - it is also true of all restricted-modules packages to date. >From my own experience the generic drivers for the ATI X series of cards (as in X1500, X1600, X1700 etc) which are applicable to desktop systems, are *not* the same as those for the equivalent ATI mobility series of cards which are intended for laptop use - and are rarely if ever interchangeable. Installing the linux restricted modules package on a laptop appears to cause the generic desktop fglrx modules to be installed - which as I said, simply does not work. Previously to overcome this I simply used this script from Kanotix.com: http://www.kanotix.com/files/install-fglrx-debian.sh which pretty much took care of all of the most difficult issues - often also patching for incompatibilities with existing kernel versions. This script has always been excellent for this - and in many senses I would highly recommended it. However this script is also incompatible with the latest FGLRX drivers and the 2.6.20-2 kernel - and now Kanotix itself as a project looks like it may be in the process of an implosion - so it is not at all clear if this script will be maintained any more. (It was however effective right up until the latest 2.6.19 Kubuntu kernel release). There should almost certainly be a dialog that allows you to select the appropriate driver type for one's system (i.e.desktop or laptop) and also perhaps a modified/updated version of this script could be run to ensure atomatic configuration of the appropriate driver parameters. I would very much like to be able to maintain my system directly through the Ubuntu repositories rather than being required to always seem the assistance or advice of third parties. ** Affects: linux-restricted-modules-2.6.20 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed ** Tags added: fawn fiesty ** Tags added: feisty ** Tags removed: fiesty -- Linux Restricted modules 2.6.20-2 are incompatable with X4100 Mobility. https://launchpad.net/bugs/76338 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 67440] Re: edgy: usplash (?) blocks console after kdm shutdown
I can confirm this - it also make console logins impossible without doing a reboot and removing the splash options. Moreover the ability to press alt + F1 (or F2 or F3) to dismiss the boot up graphics during boot is also not present. (As it is in every other distribution). This is a very useful facility for trouble shooting and should be included. -- edgy: usplash (?) blocks console after kdm shutdown https://launchpad.net/bugs/67440 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 75968] KDE in Feisty Fawn is Very Unstable/Unresponsive
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: kde Hi I know Feisty is still very much pre-release software. However in the interests of testing I thought I should share my experiences. First let me explain the conditions of my install so that potentially they can be recreated. I installed Feisty initially on my Intel Core Duo laptop with 1GB of RAM and 100GB hard drive. Because of my experiences over the years I have learned that if I ever want to compile my own software (which I occasionally do when I can't find a binary in the repositories) it is a good idea to install as many development libraries as possible, otherwise (a bit like missing dll's in Windows) it is likely you are always going to encounter a missing library at some point or other. I also like to have a full and complete working KDE environment - so I will tend to install everything related to KDE on the repositories except unneeded language packs and debug libraries. Having done this since much of my interest is in multi media - I will also tend to install as many codecs and multi media type packages as possible too. However having fulfilled all of these conditions, it seems that KDE has become very unresponsive. For example when starting up it can take between 5 and 7 minutes to go from the KDE login screen until I finally reach the desktop. Emptying the recycle bin takes an age - maybe 7 minutes plus, even if there is only one single small text file in it. Doing "sudo knoqueror" (or "kdesu konqueror") will bring up a konqueror Window - but it will often take an age to get a full listing of a directory's contents (for example opening up the / directory as su can cause konqueror to take between 5 and 10 minutes to show the full contents of the root folder). Smaller folders are similarly affected. (Although they are less so as an ordinary user). I also cannot reliably cleanly log out of a KDE session and log back in. If I try this will cause my attempt to log back into KDE again to hang once more for an unbearably long time. Usually this does sort itself out and I do eventually get to my desktop (again after 5+ minutes) but KDE behaves very sluggishly and unresponsively - almost as though all of my laptop's memory (1GB) was being used up and KDE was struggling to gain access to enough resources to allow me to do anything very useful with it. This is resolved somewhat however, if instead of simply logging out and back in again, I choose to reboot instead. Then I can reliably enter a KDE session - although again only with all of the issues I have described above. I have not installed any KDE 4x packages my KDE version is 3.5.5 ** Affects: meta-kde (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- KDE in Feisty Fawn is Very Unstable/Unresponsive https://launchpad.net/bugs/75968 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 75965] Linux Is not a Viable OS without robust and extensive printer driver support.
Public bug reported: Hi sorry to report this as a bug - but I don't know any other way this it has any chance of ever being resolved. Firstly let me say that this is not a typical n00b rant - I have been a Linux user at home for 6+ years and am well aware of all of the familiar arguments concerning the need to apply pressure on manufacturers to provide appropriate support - about the fact that it is very difficult to make any progress without that support and so on - as well as the generally eternally optimistic hope that somehow some day this situation improve of it's own accord. However after 6 plus years of hearing the same message - and with virtually no movement on behalf of any of the major manufactures and despite an extremely supportive and vocal user base - it seems clear that this issue has now become a major and potentially insurmountable obstacle in preventing the wide scale adoption of Linux on the desktop overall. To explain a little about my own circumstances - for several years I have worked for myself running a small telecommunications business - which essentially involves traveling around the UK and Europe and selling cut price telecommunications services to the travel and tourism industry. In any case, I always resisted installing Linux on my laptop - as there were too many hurdles towards doing so - predominantly that managing contacts and compatibility between different platforms was not always a simple affair. However due to advances in other areas within the Linux platform this situation has been considerably eased. Nevertheless one major factor remains outstanding in preventing me from adopting Linux as my full time mobile/portable operating system - and that is printer support. One of the aspects of my job involves traveling and meeting people in a diverse range of office type environments - with an almost equally diverse range of printers and printing equipment. In the past resolving incompatibility's between printing equipment and the various laptops I have owned was largely inconsequential, as drivers for the 'rival' operating system I was using at that time were readily available - and for good measure I always made sure I had the most common drivers installed for the brands of printers I encountered the most. (Indeed I can't recall having done this a single time where I ever really ran into any significant difficulty in this regard). However I always had philosophical issues with the necessity involved in using a proprietary operating system for the work that I do - and leaving the office and using Linux as my home based operating system of choice. So recently (and inspired by the purchase of a nice new fast laptop), I decided to see if it was either possible, or practical to ditch MS entirely. However after installing Kubuntu 'edgy' 6.10 - it has become abundantly clear that this is indeed not possible at all. I say this in light of the experience of 3 days trying (and failing) to set up a network printer (which is a Lexmark X1800) 'All in One' type combination of scanner, photocopier and printer - of exactly the kind that it is not uncommon for me to encounter in small office environments. The reason this is significant is that despite early aspirations at the beginning of the 1990's that one day we would all live in a 'paperless society', the reality is that for legal and many other reasons the vast majority of formal contractual and business type communications are still conducted on paper. If I meet a client and we make an agreement, that agreement invariably must be concluded on paper. I am aware also that my own personal experience in this regard is far from unique - as from the smallest of office environments, to the largest of corporate and multi-national conglomerate businesses, all business of any true and binding significance is still conducted on paper. This is significant for Linux also - in that without the large scale adoption of Linux in the office and working environment, the hopes of a great many Linux advocates everywhere that one day Linux may supplant Microsoft as the dominant operating system of choice in the market at large, would seem a potentially forlorn, misplaced and unrealistic aspiration. It is significant too in the sense that unless Linux is adopted in a whole sale manner within these environments, then Linux as a desktop operating system may always be restricted to being used by nothing more than a relatively few home based enthusiasts. If after 6 years of using Linux, even I can still struggle (and fail) to get a basic printer configuration going - how is it reasonable to expect an averagely skilled office worker to quickly and efficient configure their laptops for fast printer and scanner access? No company in their right mind could afford to allocate this kind of time to their workers - and no worker in this environment should be expected to waste this kind of time, attempting to do what in 2006 should be the most basic of all
[Bug 75068] Re: The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required
I installed these packages via apt-get. I'm afraid I am rather traditional in this regard. Yes I do have the full KDE meta package installed and also "kubuntu-desktop" - indeed I pretty much have all of the KDE applications (except unneeded language packs) that are listed as available on the current Kubuntu repositories. It does not help that I have the package you suggested installed. Indeed as time progresses it seems as I install more of my preferred software, more and more items are being added to this list of suggested items for automatic removal. Again my preference would be to decide which apps to add and which to remove - and providing this is practical, to also be able to do so without encountering these erroneous errors. -- The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required https://launchpad.net/bugs/75068 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
