[Bug 1942363] [NEW] apport-bug unusably broken

2021-09-01 Thread ralphb
Public bug reported:

For a regarding LibreOffice Calc, I started apport-cli in order to
submit a bug report.

Attached picture #1 shows the second screen of apport. I'm not
reporting a display problem, but I've chosen "Other problem" before.
And "I don't know" isn't exactly the correct option, "Neither of those"
would be more accurate.

Picture #2 shows the collection of information. There isn't really
anything to collect in my case, so I'd rather not have apport attach
random data.

Picture #3 shows the result of the collection. No idea. Pressing
Cancel yields another one of those windows.

How are we supposed to submit bug reports? Especially since the link to
manually report a bug is buried in very long list of things that could
go wrong on a random web page.

Kindly fix apport-cli so that bug reporting is possible (or make manual
reporting easier).

[Bug 1942360] [NEW] LibreCalc: Missing entry fields in dialog

2021-09-01 Thread ralphb
Public bug reported:

Some of the user dialogs within LibreCalc (version 6.4.7.2, on Kubuntu
20.04) do not show entry fields. In particular, all dialogs for
Conditional Formatting are affected.

See the attachment as an example for a bad dialog: There should be an entry
field for the formula, but it is completely absent. That this is a bug has
been confirmed at the LibreOffice forum:
https://ask.libreoffice.org/t/librecalc-conditional-formatting-for-separate-ranges/67552

Alas, I don't have a screenshot showing the correct dialog.

(I hope the package is right, but the search broke with an error
message.)

I could not find a package starting with 'k' that would hint at input
configuration, so I chose kubuntu-meta. Please select an appropriate
package, I really don't know where this belongs.

[Bug 1918001] Re: KDE ignores keyboard settings

2021-03-06 Thread ralphb
I did find file .config/kxkbrc:

[Layout]
DisplayNames=
LayoutList=de(nodeadkeys)
LayoutLoopCount=-1
Model=pc105
Options=caps:ctrl_modifier
ResetOldOptions=true
ShowFlag=false
ShowLabel=true
ShowLayoutIndicator=true
ShowSingle=false
SwitchMode=Global
Use=true

So why is CapsLock not Control?

[Bug 1918001] [NEW] KDE ignores keyboard settings

2021-03-06 Thread ralphb
Public bug reported:

After rebooting Kubuntu 20.04, KDE suddenly ignores all my keyboard settings,
including
- increased key repeat rate and decreased key wait time (in Input
Devices/Keyboard/Hardware)
- mapping CapsLock to Control (in Input Devices/Keyboard/Advances)

These settings are displayed correctly in System Settings (see
attachment), but don't work at all.

Interestingly, most of my custom key shortcuts still work.

Are there issues with System Settings, or is one of my configuration
files damaged? Which file would I have to delete to reset keyword
settings?

[Bug 1904769] [NEW] Installed chromium-browser does not work

2020-11-18 Thread ralphb
Public bug reported:

Since I need Chrome, I installed chromium-browser and snapd in aptitude.

But Chrome didn't appear in the menu, and launching it from the console
yields

cassiopeia ~ > chromium-browser

Command '/usr/bin/chromium-browser' requires the chromium snap to be installed.
Please install it with:

snap install chromium

cassiopeia ~ > snap install chromium
error: cannot communicate with server: Post http://localhost/v2/snaps/chromium:
dial unix /run/snapd.socket: connect: no such file or directory

I would have thought that chromium-browser does install the chromium
snap. So what does it mean, and how do I fix it?

[Bug 1902352] Re: apt-get -u upgrade yields "-bash: /usr/bin/snap: No such file or directory"

2020-11-16 Thread ralphb
The grep command doesn't yield any output.

And I did purge snapd using aptitude when I uninstalled it. Anyway, I
did purge it again with the command you gave, but the output was:

cassiopeia:~# apt purge snapd
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package 'snapd' is not installed, so not removed
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

I did not reboot, and the snap message is still there. Couldn't this be
built into apt-get upgrade?

[Bug 1902427] Re: systemd pauses for unspecified reason

2020-11-14 Thread ralphb
The issue was indeed /etc/fstab, which contained a UUID inserted by the
installer. Removing the UUID by the actual device name removed the 1:30
minutes delay.

You might argue that this is a bug by itself, but it's good enough for
me.

[Bug 1902428] [NEW] launchpad assigns wrong package

2020-11-01 Thread ralphb
Public bug reported:

Anytime I submit a bug report where I know and fill in the package,
Launchpad will replace the package by the previously entered package,
yielding incorrect package information.

For example, I created a snapd bug, package was pulseaudio.
Then I created a systemd bug, package was snapd.

Please fix your package handling.

This didn't really help, but `systemd-analyze plot > boot.svg` produced
an SVG file (see attachment) that shows a gap between store.mount
(completes within 38 ms) and apparmor.service of almost 1:30 minutes.
What did systemd do during this gap?

I think it is either a bug in systemd that idles, or in systemd-analyze
that doesn't disclose the actions in that gap.

(Note: I have posted this question in two well-known Ubuntu forums, but
I didn't receive any answers.)

[Bug 1902352] [NEW] apt-get -u upgrade yields "-bash: /usr/bin/snap: No such file or directory"

2020-10-31 Thread ralphb
Public bug reported:

I'm running Kubuntu 20.04.

To the best of my knowledge, I purged all snap-related packages,
including snap itself.

Now, every time I update my packages with `apt-get update && apt-get -u
upgrade`, I get this output at the end:

-bash: /usr/bin/snap: No such file or directory

How can I get rid of this message?

[Bug 1899352] Re: Pulseaudio cannot be kept from starting or respawning

2020-10-20 Thread ralphb
The package "pulseaudio" contains the files:

/usr/bin/start-pulseaudio-x11
/etc/pulse/client.conf.d/01-enable-autospawn.conf

Thus, it should be fairly obvious where I got the files from.

And /etc/pulse/client.conf is ignored, despite my user (and root) not
having a ~/.local/pulse directory.

And why would we need files for non-systemd systems if Ubuntu _is_ a
systemd-base system?

So I still think something is quite wrong with the pulseaudio package.

[Bug 1899352] Re: Pulseaudio cannot be kept from starting or respawning

2020-10-18 Thread ralphb
Thanks, that's fair enough.

My remaining questions then are:

1. Why is /usr/bin/start-pulseaudio needed?
2. Why is /etc/pulse/client.conf ignored?
3. In light of 2, why is /etc/pulse/client.conf.d/01-respawn-something needed?
4. And in light of /lib/systemd/user/pulseaudio.service, why is
/etc/xdg/autostart/pulseaudio.desktop needed?

Wouldn't one way to start pulseaudio be sufficient? Also, please don't
ignore the configuration.

Finally, how can I use any of these methods to start pulseaudio in
system mode? Adding -D to /lib/systemd/user/pulseaudio.service did not
work (probably because I'm not root).

[Bug 1899352] [NEW] Pulseaudio cannot be kept from starting or respawning

2020-10-11 Thread ralphb
Public bug reported:

On my freshly installed system, I need to run pulseaudio in system mode.
Alas, by default, pulseaudio is run in user mode, and is set to respawn,
so that I cannot kill the user process and start pulseaudio in system
mode.

I tried:

1. Editing /etc/pulse/client.conf, setting autospawn = no. This did nothing.
2. Removing the file /etc/pulse/client.conf.d/01-respawn-something. I cannot
even begin to fathom why such a file would exist. Anyway, this did nothing.
3. I removed the file /usr/bin/start-pulseaudio. Why Of course, this did
nothing.
4. I removed the file /etc/xdg/autostart/pulseaudio.desktop. Why on earth do
you implement four different ways to annoy your users? On the other hand, this
did NOTHING.

User mode is still starting, and respawning is enabled.

What the heck do I have to do to get rid of user mode pulseaudio? Could
you please clean up this clusterfuck?

[Bug 1890042] Re: KDE: Key shortcuts no longer working

2020-08-06 Thread ralphb
I said previously I defined the shortcuts in the Menu Editor.

I've now had a look at Settings -> Shortcuts, and found that
- Global Shortcuts lists all my applications for which I defined a shortcut
(and some others) with the shortcut listed correctly
- Custom Shortcuts lists all my applications for which I defined a shortcut,
but only some of them have a shortcut associated with them (I see no pattern in
the distribution of apps with or without shortcut).

[Bug 1890042] [NEW] KDE: Key shortcuts no longer working

2020-08-02 Thread ralphb
Public bug reported:

In the KDE menu editor, you can define keyboard shortcuts for each
program that, when pressed, will launch that respective program.

However, since 20.04, that mechanism no longer works -- pressing any
shortcut key (e.g., Meta+E) no longer starts the assigned program (e.g.,
Emacs GUI).

Of course I don't know if the issue is with menu editor, or kwin, or
something else in Plasma.

[Bug 1851011] [NEW] Chromium is now a snap package

2019-11-02 Thread ralphb
Public bug reported:

Starting with Ubuntu Eoan, chromium-browser is shipped as snap package,
instead of a regular .deb package.

This is wasteful, since all dependencies have to duplicated.
It also breaks apt, which no longer controls all the software on my system.
I now have to deal with two tools to keep everything up-to-date.

Please restrict snap packages to big, complimentary packages, which
chromium definitely isn't.

[Bug 1813792] [NEW] Window decorations flicker with OpenGL renderers

2019-01-29 Thread ralphb
Public bug reported:

When using the KDE desktop for a certain amount of time (seems random),
the window decoration in the top-left corner starts for flicker for the
active application. The flickering remains when the application loses
focus, so more and more decorations will flicker.

The flickering occurs for both OpenGL renderers, but not with XRender.
I know no way of making the flickering stop, except for rebooting or
switching to XRender and back.

These issues started with Kubuntu 18.04, if I remember correctly.

The title should read "Sandboxed applications don't play sound with
Pulseaudio", but if there's a way to edit the title after accidentally
hitting Return, it's not obvious.

[Bug 1806238] [NEW] Sandboxed applications donplay sound with Pulseaudio

2018-12-02 Thread ralphb
Public bug reported:

On my Kubuntu desktop machine, I'm running Firefox as a different user
for security reasons. Since Firefox has dropped support for ALSA, I no
longer have sound in Firefox.

The actual bug is that (a) Pulseaudio doesn't accept connection from
other users, or (b) Pulseaudio isn't supposed to be run by root.

Note that the workaround of creating a socket does not work in my
machine;

/etc/pulse/default.pa:
load-module module-native-protocol-unix auth-anonymous=1
socket=/tmp/ff-pulse-socket

/etc/pulse/client.conf:
default-server = unix:/tmp/ff-pulse-socket

Using this workaround, pavucontrol shows a sound stream by Firefox and
shows sound for line out, but no audio is heard.

Audio for the logged-in user works fine.

[Bug 1461698] Re: Cross-hair pointer leaves a trace on screen in eeschema

2018-07-21 Thread ralphb
This bug shows on 18.04, but not on the Kicad provided ppa for version
4.0.7, which I've been using before.

The Kicad shipped by Ubuntu 18.04 is *BROKEN*, as the crosses make using
eeschema impossible.
I don't see why this is labeled "opinion" and not "confirmed".

[Bug 1645132] [NEW] Double click on window title ignored

2016-11-27 Thread ralphb
Public bug reported:

I set my Window Title Bar Action to "shade", my Focus to "click". My

In about 60% of all tries, double clicking on the title bar of any

[Bug 1639447] Re: phonon-backend-gstreamer should not depend *only* on pulseaudio

2016-11-06 Thread ralphb
On second thought, I still should be able to select different sources,
as was possible on Xenial with phonon-backend-gstreamer and

Is the more restricted dependency for phonon-backend-gstreamer really

[Bug 1639447] [NEW] phonon-backend-gstreamer should not depend *only* on pulseaudio

2016-11-05 Thread ralphb
Public bug reported:

For Yakkety, phonon-backend-gstreamer now depends exclusively on
gstreamer1.0-pulseaudio.

In Xenial, phonon-backend-gstreamer would allow both
gstreamer1.0-pulseaudio and gstreamer1.0-alsa.

Please add gstreamer1.0-alsa to Yakkety as well.

(Note: I rely on ALSA, as Pulseaudio won't work reliably on my system,
and is horrible anyway.)

[Bug 1637853] [NEW] sddm swallows first keypress after resume

2016-10-30 Thread ralphb
Public bug reported:

When resuming the computer, sddm will ask for the password. The first
keypress, however, will not be detected; only keypresses 2 and above
will be entered into the password field.

This does not happen when logging in for the first time after boot, or

[Bug 1637852] [NEW] kwin effect greys quarter of screen

2016-10-30 Thread ralphb
Public bug reported:

My desktop system is a Skylake i5-6600 with Asus Z170 mainboard and
Intel onboard graphics, connected to a 4K monitor via DP 1.2.

I've selected "Desktop Cube Animation" as Virtual Desktop Switching
Animation.

After upgrade to Yakkety, this desktop animation shows a large dark area
in the top right corner, while the animation is in progress. The size
is exactly (?) 1/4 of the screen, and the color of the area changes
during animation. When the animation completes, everything is back to
normal.

I cannot tell if this issue is related to Kwin, or the Intel graphics
driver or some such thing.

On Xenial, this particular bug was not present, although I did have some
glitches in Cover Switch (bottom of Windows showing at the top).

[Bug 1631746] [NEW] grub accepts only one key press in total

2016-10-09 Thread ralphb
Public bug reported:

When grub start, I can press exactly one key, then all other key presses
are ignored. I cannot tell if grub crashes or not.

This one keypress could be RETURN, then normal boot continues. It could
be ARROW DOWN, then the second line in the grub menu is selected.

But from then on, all further key presses are ignored, be they RETURN,
ARROW UP/DOWN, even CTRL+ALT+DEL.

This breaks the selection of MEMTEST and other grub entries but the
first.

[Bug 1631748] [NEW] ubuntu-bug selects wrong category

2016-10-09 Thread ralphb
Public bug reported:

The ubuntu-bug tool always assumes an xorg bug when I select "other".

For example, selecting "other problem" on the first screen and then "I

another problem (e.g. grub).

The selection in the first screen apparently is not honored, which makes
reporting bugs (including bugs about ubuntu-bug) quite difficult.

(Also, the launchpad package search dialog reports an "OOPS-xxx" error.)

[Bug 1579490] [NEW] Installer cannot install in open LUKS partition

2016-05-08 Thread ralphb
Public bug reported:

It's not possible to install Xenial into an existing LUKS partition.

Before starting the graphical installer, I created and opened the LUKS
partition as /dev/mapper/root. In the manual "Prepare Partitions"
screen, /dev/mapper/root is shown as disk instead of partition. The
partitioner thus creates ANOTHER partition in my partition, which fdisk
shows as /dev/mapper/root-part1.

Once the original installation is complete, I reboot again into the
graphical installer image. When I open the LUKS partition as
/dev/mapper/root, fdisk shows a partition root-part1 inside
/dev/mapper/root. But I cannot mount this:

# mount /dev/mapper/root /mnt
-> wrong fs type, ...

# mount /dev/mapper/root-part1 /mnt
-> does not exist

# mount /dev/mapper/root/root-part1 /mnt
-> does not exist

# mount /dev/mapper/root1 /mnt
-> does not exist

Thus, the installation is borked and useless. The graphical installer
needs to handle existing LUKS partitions as partitions, not as disks.

Finally, note that the guided install is NOT an option, as I don't want
to rely on LVM.

Some additional comments:

My machine is a Dell XPS 13 using the BCM 4360 chip. The driver works
perfectly fine with my Linksys wireless router (b/g mode). When I
connect to my TP-Link router, however, authentication works fine, but
sending and receiving additional packets nearly instantly freezes my

supply any post-mortem data.

[Bug 868970] Re: User should be able to disable Akonaditray when akonadi/nepomuk is not used

2011-12-31 Thread ralphb
@Andrey: Maybe I don't understand your instructions, but it does NOT
work for me. This is the state after killing Akonaditray manually:

tiger ~ > grep Hidden .config/autostart/Akonaditray.desktop
Hidden=true
tiger ~ > ps aux | egrep 'nepo|ako'
ralph 8202 0.0 0.0 11996 880 pts/5S+ 14:01 0:00 egrep nepo|ako

Yet, logging out and logging back in starts Akonaditray. (And no, I
don't want to purge my session, since I put quite some work into it.)

Steve, just what would our "actual problem" be if not the Glib error
message?

I also observe this issue, albeit not at login, but at logout, and ONLY
on my Dell laptop. Oh, and I'm using kdm, not gdm. I simply wouldn't
know which package to file this bug report against.

Please also note that this crashes the system, which makes this bug
rather critical.

[Bug 378675] Re: Please remove asoundconf-gtk from the archive (asoundconf script has been removed)

2010-05-20 Thread ralphb
This is still a bug in Lucid.

On my system, sound is just plain broken without asoundconf. Lucky, I
had an old .asoundrc.asoundconf lying around ... (I'm using external
USB speakers.)

I fail to see how providing asoundconf is any worse than having no sound
at all.

[Bug 559169] [NEW] Shortcut keys not working

2010-04-09 Thread ralphb
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdebase

I've defined several shortcut keys in the menu editor, e.g., Meta+W for
starting Firefox or Meta+E for starting Emacs. None of these work,
however.

If Konsole has focus, pressing Meta+E will not launch Emacs. Instead,
the Konsole window will receive the letter 'e'.

Shortcuts defined via System Settings (e.g., Meta+Backspace for killing
the current window) work just fine, though.

This bug has been reported upstream, where it has been ignored so far
(see https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=233260).

[Bug 550454] [NEW] Hardware rf kill switch not recognized (Sony Vaio Y11S1E)

2010-03-28 Thread ralphb
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: wireless-tools

I'm using Kubuntu 9.10 with the stock Linux kernel and the wireless
backports modules.

My Sony Vaio VPC-Y11S1E notebook uses an Atheros AR9285 chip that is
supported by the ath9k driver. The notebook also has a physical slider
switch that can be used to enable/disable wireless functionality. But
no matter what the position of the switch is, wireless is always
disabled:

r...@lynx:~# rfkill list
0: phy0: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: yes
r...@lynx:~# iwconfig wlan0
wlan0 IEEE 802.11bgn Mode:Managed Access Point: Not-Associated
  Tx-Power=off
  Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
  Encryption key:off
  Power Management:off

Consequently, there is no way to get wireless networking up and running
on this model.

[Bug 297775] Re: konqueror cannot resolve mozilla.com

2009-01-19 Thread ralphb
Yes, the issue persists.

I think this might be in part caused by my router, similarly to the
issue for Safari on Mac OS X currently being reported (see
http://www.heise.de/newsticker/Fritz-Box-bremst-Mac--/meldung/121555 for
an example in German).

In this case this would make this bug a duplicate of
http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=162600.

[Bug 297775] Re: konqueror cannot resolve mozilla.com

2008-11-13 Thread ralphb
OK, update --

The scenario above occurs when entering "www.mozilla.com" in the address
bar, without the protocol specification. According to the error
message, the protocol defaults to http.

Entering "http://www.mozilla.com"; DOES work, however. Entering
"https://www.mozilla.com"; produces a similar error message as above, but
explicitly stating "protocol: https".

So this is actually two bugs in one.

[Bug 297775] [NEW] konqueror cannot resolve mozilla.com

2008-11-13 Thread ralphb
Public bug reported:

Starting with Kubuntu 8.10, konqueror cannot connect to mozilla.com:

Unknown Host
Details of the Request:
URL: http://www.mozilla.com
Protocol: http
Date and Time: Thursday 13 November 2008 20:33
Additional Information: www.mozilla.com: Unknown error
Description:
An unknown host error indicates that the server with the requested name,
www.mozilla.com, could not be located on the Internet.

I can connect to other sites, however, such as kubuntu.org or
launchpad.net. And note that in general the network is working fine, as
well:

I'm on a private network 192.168.99.0/8, with my router 192.168.99.1
serving as nameserver. In my parallel installation of Kubuntu 8.04 on
the same machine (using the same hardware), konqueror doesn't have these
kinds of issues either.
