[Bug 1812523] Re: Gpaste copy buffer fills itself up with instances of a single copied image

2021-05-18 Thread resplin
I'm seeing the same behavior on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS using gnome-shell-
extensions 3.36.3-1 on Gnome 3.36.7 and pasting images captured with KDE
Spectacle.

Every time I take a screen shot and press the "Copy to Clipboard"
button, my gpaste buffer fills up with copies of the image and my CPU
spikes until Gnome Shell crashes.

[Bug 1864871] Re: Failed to init Intel sound card in 20.04

2020-04-28 Thread resplin
I see this problem on a Dell Inspiron 3630.

Workaround:
The problem is only manifest when the modules are loaded during boot. After
booting, I only have the dummy sound card. But if I run `sudo alsa
force-reload` my sound card is correctly detected and functions fine until my
next reboot.

I added a script to force-reload alsa after boot, and things seem to be
reliable enough while I wait for a permanent fix.

It appears that this bug is different from what causes similar sound problems
on the Lenovo X1 Carbon 7gen. That problem is reported and fixed in this bug:

[Bug 1768912] [NEW] Wifi connection drops regularly

2018-05-03 Thread resplin
Public bug reported:

Description: A few times an hour the networking drops for around 20
seconds. It then automatically reconnects. The only clearly related
message in journalctl is the DHCPREQUEST / DCHPACK followed the
messages:

Starting Network Manager Script Dispatcher Service...
bound to X.X.X.X -- renewal in 1692 seconds.
[system] Successfully activated service 'org.freedesktop.nm_dispatcher'
Started Network Manager Script Dispatcher Service.
req:1 'dhcp4-change' [wlp2s0]: new request (1 scripts)
req:1 'dhcp4-change' [wlp2s0]: start running ordered scripts...

That makes me think that Network Manager silently died and was
restarted.

Notes:
* The system is a new Dell Precision 5520 with a Qualcomm Atheros QCA6174
802.11ac Wireless Network Adapter (rev 32)
* This system started as a clean install of Ubuntu 18.04 Beta on March 31, 2018
* The wireless networking was stable from install until a system update on
April 27, 2018
* The wired networking is completely stable.

[Bug 1763546] [NEW] No text quoted in a reply or forward

2018-04-12 Thread resplin
Public bug reported:

Steps to Reproduce:
* Open Evolution
* Browse to an email in an IMAP inbox (Gmail)
* Press "Reply to All", "Reply to Sender", and "Forward"

Behavior Observed:
* A composer window is opened with the correct address and subject for a Reply
or Forward. If Forward, then attachments are included.
* No text is included. Even if text is highlighted in the original email, it
will not be included.
* Copying and pasting text from the previous email into the new composer window
has no effect.
* Typing in the composer window works as expected.
* Text is not quoted from HTML or Plain Text emails.

Behavior Expected:
* Text in the previous email should be included in the composer window in a
quoted or inline format.

Environment:
* Evolution 3.28.1-1
* Ubuntu 18.04 Beta, Ubuntu Bionic Beaver (development branch)

Note:
* I have configured Evolution to always respond with Plain Text emails,
including losing formatting from HTML emails.
* It worked on April 11 until I performed an upgrade. It was immediately broken
afterward.

After doing some research in the issue queue, it appears that this is
really a problem with the Aptitude problem resolver and multi-arch.

apt-get install sees the gettext:i386 dependency as a "recommends" and
doesn't install it.

[Bug 775718] Re: Won't boot on first try, always boots on second try

2011-05-31 Thread resplin
The problem persists even when I have turned off GRUB_HIDDEN so that I
always get the OS selection menu. The system always hangs after the OS
selection and before the screen to enter the dm_crypt password. It
always works on the second try.

Any ideas?

[Bug 775718] [NEW] Won't boot on first try, always boots on second try

2011-05-02 Thread resplin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: grub2

I installed Maverick 10.10 with full disk encryption (dm_crypt).
Everything worked fine.

I recently upgraded to Natty 11.04. Upgrade went fine, but every boot I
get a blank blue screen instead of the decryption prompt.

If I just power-off and try again, it correctly goes to the Grub
selection screen. Booting the default Linux takes me to the decryption
screen and everything works.

[Bug 690793] [NEW] e1000e drops connection

2010-12-15 Thread resplin
Public bug reported:

Running Maverick on my Thinkpad W510. My wired network connection is
normally functional, but about once a week it stops transferring data.

This temporarily fixes the problem:
rmmod e1000e; modprobe e1000e

Wireless connectivity works fine even when the wired network is non-
functional. The lights on the wired network remain green even when non-
functional. Disconnecting and reconnecting the cable does not restore
functionality. I find no errors in the logs. The system thinks the
connection is functional, but no data is transferred.

It might be related to this bug:

Bug #619841 [REGRESSION] e1000e doesnt work on 2.6.35.

But the problem is intermittent.

[Bug 689753] [NEW] Need i2400m-fw-usb-1.5.sbcf for i2400m_usb

2010-12-13 Thread resplin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-firmware

When I boot up I get the following errors:

[ 35.912896] i2400m_usb 2-1.3:1.0: WiMAX interface wmx0 (00:1d:e1:36:0b:56)
ready
[ 35.914152] i2400m_usb 2-1.3:1.0: fw i6050-fw-usb-1.5.sbcf: cannot load
file: -2
[ 35.914179] i2400m_usb 2-1.3:1.0: Could not find a usable firmware image
[ 35.914200] i2400m_usb 2-1.3:1.0: cannot bootstrap device: -2

But I only have these two firmware installed from the linux-firmware
package:

/lib/firmware/i2400m-fw-usb-1.3.sbcf
/lib/firmware/i2400m-fw-usb-1.4.sbcf

I think the latest firmware needs to be added to the package from:

http://linuxwimax.org/Download?action=AttachFile&do=get&target=i2400m-
fw-1.5.0.tar.bz2

Others are also having this issue, as seen from this thread from the
forums:

http://www1.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=10169876

Running Kubuntu Maverick on a Lenovo W510.

[Bug 585647] Re: X randomly crashes Kubuntu Lucid

2010-05-25 Thread resplin
I don't know how it could be related, but the only commonality I can
think of between the two crashes is that they were both shortly after
receiving a Kopete message that I did not view, so the notification was
sitting in the panel.

[Bug 330906] Re: MASTER: GMA-500 lacks driver for 8.10 and 9.10 (poulsbo works only on 8.04 and 9.04)

2010-05-10 Thread resplin
Instructions for getting a Dell Mini 10 working with both Karmic and
Lucid are in my blog:

http://richard.esplins.org/siwi/2010/01/16/kubuntu-karmic-dell-mini-10/

The Karmic instructions are distilled from comments on this bug report.

The Lucid instructions come from the script discussed at this page:

http://code.google.com/p/gma500/wiki/InstallScript

Thank you to those who made it possible to get this working!

[Bug 229112] Re: swing.properties should be in /etc, so the Java Look and Feel can be changed

2010-02-19 Thread resplin
I think the request in the new description makes a lot of sense (though
it probably would have been better as a new bug report).

The user should be able to change the default look and feel be editing
something in /etc. There are already a number of java properties files
in /etc/java-6-sun that allow manipulation of other configuration
settings.

As a work-around, I created /etc/java-6-sun/swing.properties with the
swing.defaultlaf setting, and symlinked it to
/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun-1.6.0.06/jre/lib. For anyone getting here via Google,
the correct value for Nimbus is:
com.sun.java.swing.plaf.nimbus.NimbusLookAndFeel
(beware though, it can cause Null Pointer Exceptions, see
http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6800801)

[Bug 514802] [NEW] exclude_file ignored when exclude is used

2010-01-30 Thread resplin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rsnapshot

System: Ubuntu Karmic 9.10
Version: 1.3.0-2

Environment
---
I have an exclude file that contains a list of file types that I want to
exclude from backup. For one of my backup paths, I also list a subdirectory
to exclude.

Here are the relevant parts of my rsnapshot.conf:
exclude_file /etc/rsnapshot/exclude
backup /home/myuser mylaptop/ exclude=NoBak
backup /home/otheruser mylaptop/

Here is the relevant line from the exclude file:
/**/*.vdi

Expected Behavior
-
I would expect .vdi files to be excluded from all backup paths, and the
NoBak
directory to be excluded in /home/myuser.

Observed Behavior
-
Though the NoBak subdirectory in /home/myuser is excluded from the backup,
.vdi files are being included. However, .vdi files in /home/otheruser are
not being included.

Other Information
-
rsync behaves appropriately when it is handed both a --exclude and
--exclude-from flag.

I quickly went through the exclude and exclude_file areas of the rsnapshot
Perl script, and the error was not obvious to me. It seemed like the rsync
command line was being built correctly with the ".=" operator.

[Bug 434276] Re: KDE screen lock won't unlock

2009-10-31 Thread resplin
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 351463 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/351463

I found the solution, which I posted on the other bug. I reproduce it
here to make it easy to find.

I found the solution for my situation at bug #299717. I needed to fix the group
assigned to /etc/shadow.

The solution was to:
chgrp shadow /etc/shadow

kscreenlocker unlocks now.

[Bug 351463] Re: KDE4 screensaver lock doesn't accept password

2009-10-31 Thread resplin
The problem resolved itself on two of my machines when upgrading to
Karmic release. One machine, however, still wouldn't unlock the screen.

I found the solution for my situation at bug #299717. I needed to fix
the group assigned to /etc/shadow.

The solution was to:
chgrp shadow /etc/shadow

kscreenlocker unlocks now.

I'm not sure if I messed the group up while doing a bulk add of users,
or if Alpha 6 didn't set the group right. Fresh installs of Karmic
release appears to not show the problem.

I vote that the bug be closed. Thank you for the help.

[Bug 351463] Re: KDE4 screensaver lock doesn't accept password

2009-10-05 Thread resplin
I see the buggy behavior on three machines, all fresh installs between
Alpha 6 and Beta 1, and all updated on the same day to Beta 1.

I went through the bug at kde.org, and tested kcheckpass. I too fail:

rich...@laptop:/usr/lib/kde4/libexec$ ./kcheckpass
Password:

Authentication failure

rich...@laptop:/usr/lib/kde4/libexec$ tail -f /var/log/auth.log

Oct 5 08:39:16 laptop unix_chkpwd[3745]: password check failed for user
(richard)
Oct 5 08:39:16 laptop kcheckpass[3741]: pam_unix(kde:auth): authentication
failure; logname= uid=1000 euid=1000 tty=/dev/pts/1 ruser= rhost= user=richard

Oct 5 08:39:16 laptop kcheckpass[3741]: Authentication failure for richard
(invoked by uid 1000)
^C

However, I just noticed that things are working on the kid's computer now. I
checked the versions of kdebase, and they are the same:
kdebase-workspace-bin 4:4.3.1-0ubuntu14

I haven't configured things any differently. Any suggestions on how to
identify what is going on?

Thanks for your help.

[Bug 351463] Re: KDE4 screensaver lock doesn't accept password

2009-10-03 Thread resplin
I am seeing this behavior with Karmic Alpha 6 and Beta 1. My report is
in Bug #434276 (I swear I searched for a duplicate before logging a new
bug). The summary is that all permissions appear to be correct, but I
cannot unlock my screen.

After reading this bug report, I verified that xscreensaver is not
installed.

As a temporary workaround, I have disabled the screen saver for now.

I expect that this should be easy to duplicate. I see it on all three of
my very different machines. All are fresh installs with no special
tweaks.

Thanks.

[Bug 437432] [NEW] Can't insert image into impress

2009-09-26 Thread resplin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

Running Kubuntu Karmic Alpha 6
openoffice.org-kde 3.1.1-2ubuntu1
openoffice.org-impress 3.1.1-2ubuntu1

Steps to reproduce:
1. Select a layout that has an "Double Click to Add Graphics" field
2. Double click
3. The file selector opens, but it won't show the .jepg or .png files in the
directory even though the filter is "all images"
4. Type in the name of the files, and select OK.
5. The file selector disappears for a moment, and then immediately reopens. The
only way to exit is to hit cancel. The images are not in the slide.

I have tried a variety of png and jepg images. The images open in
Gwenview.

[Bug 434342] [NEW] Intel wireless cannot connect using WPA

2009-09-21 Thread resplin
Public bug reported:

Just upgraded to Kabuntu Karmic Alpha 6
lspci says: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 3945ABG [Golan] Network Connection
(rev 02)
Kernel module iwl3945 is loaded

I can't connect to my WPA enable access point. It lets me select the
access point, and tries to connect, but it repeatedly asks for my
password.

It worked with KNetworkManager in KDE 3.5. Wicd works fine.

[Bug 434276] [NEW] KDE screen lock won't unlock

2009-09-21 Thread resplin
Public bug reported:

I just did a fresh install of Kubuntu Karmic 9.10 Alpha 6

When I lock my screen either by screensaver activity or pressing the
lock widget, I can not unlock my session.

It repeatedly says "Unlocking failed". To unlock my session I have to
switch to a virtual terminal (CTR-ALT-F1), and killall kscreenlocker.

This recent KDE forum thread reports the same problem with 4.3:
http://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=66&t=62591

I followed the debugging steps mentioned in the thread, I and have
checked these permissions:

20 -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 18920 2009-09-15 18:31
/usr/lib/kde4/libexec/kcheckpass
188 -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 190488 2009-09-15 18:31
/usr/lib/kde4/libexec/kscreenlocker
44 -rwsr-xr-x 1 root root 42856 2009-07-31 07:59 /usr/bin/passwd

There is no krunner_lock on my system.

Let me know if any other information will help with this.

[Bug 434254] [NEW] KDE weather widgets won't connect through NOAA

2009-09-21 Thread resplin
Public bug reported:

Using Kubuntu Karmic 9.10 Alpha 6
I see this bug without installing any extra packages, and I'm not sure which
part of KDE base installs the default Plasma Widgets.

Searching for my city using NOAA's National Weather Service, clicking on
the search box gives absolutely no feedback, so I cannot configure the
widget and I have to click on Cancel.

I see the behavior with:
* Weather Forecast from the default install
* LCD Weather station from the default install
because they appear to share a configuration dialog.

I thought I might be missing something, so I tried installing additional
packages:
* kweather doesn't appear to install a usable widget. It looks like it is some
kind of service. Is it necessary for the plasma widgets to work? Installing or
uninstalling it doesn't appear to make a difference.
* Simple Weather Forecast from kweather uses the Yahoo data service, and
requests a cryptic city code. Once I figured out that it needed my ZIP code,
things appear to be working. It isn't as nice, but it's a functional
work-around.

Once LCD Weather said something about not being able to validate, but I
haven't been able to reproduce it. I'm not sure what format it wants my
city in to be able to validate. I wish there was a list selector.

This behavior appears to be a KDE 4.3 thing (not Kubuntu specific), as my
experience is the same as this forum thread, including the occasional error
message (though I don't see an option for weather wallpaper in desktop settings
so I couldn't test that):

[Bug 434214] [NEW] Fails to connect through a CNAME.

2009-09-21 Thread resplin
Public bug reported:

I just upgraded from Kubuntu Hardy 8.04 to Kubuntu Karmic 9.10 Alpha 6

I have three Jabber accounts that were all previously working, and all
failed to connect after the upgrade. One is a gmail account, and two are
gmail accounts using domains hosted at gmail.

The gmail account began working after installing qca-tls.

The other accounts needed qca-tls, but still wouldn't work until I had
also changed the hostname from the talk.mydomain CNAME to the canonical
name talk.l.google.com

It appears that Kopete can't do CNAME lookups anymore.

[Bug 434180] [NEW] Can't pass options to gvim as external editor

2009-09-21 Thread resplin
Public bug reported:

I just update to Kubuntu Karmic Alpha 6 from Kubuntu Hardy 8.04

I have used GVim as an external editor, and it has always worked well. The
setting is in Configure->Composer->External Editor. This was my "Specify
editor" command:
gvim "+set ft=mail" -f %f

In Karmic, this command does not work. The settings string is interpreted as a
filename, Vim complains about multiple open files, and the saved text does not
make it back into KMail--it's in a file named
+set ft=mail"
in my Documents folder.

I then tried this:
gvim -c "+set ft=mail" -f %f

But it has the same problem.

Removing the options works fine:
gvim -f %f

But then Vim doesn't know writing an email.

Let me know if I should provide any additional information.

[Bug 354575] [NEW] Sun Report Building crashes OpenOffice Base

2009-04-03 Thread resplin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org-report-builder

Behavior:
Creating a new report using the Sun report builder works fine including saving,
closing OpenOffice Base, reopening Base, and reopening the report. After opening
an existing report, closing any report builder window crashes openoffice. The
recovery works fine and restores all data. Choosing to skip recovery and instead
just open the previous version of the file results in all tables going AWOL.

Version numbers of relevant packages:
Kubuntu 8.04.2
OpenOffice 3.0.1-7ubuntu~hardy1 from
http://ppa.launchpad.net/openoffice-pkgs/ubuntu hardy main
Sun report builder 1.0.5+OOo3.0.1-7ubuntu1~hardy1

Research:
Google says that this is also a problem on Ubuntu 8.10, PCLinuxOS, and SuSE 11.
It is rumored to be resolved by installing the report builder extension
directly from Sun.
I don't have time to test that right now, but wanted to get this bug logged
before moving on.

Conclusion:
Probably resolvable by including a new version from upstream.

[Bug 219206] Re: Crash on odbc traffic with MySQL server

2008-09-23 Thread resplin
I see the same behavior when accessing SQLite3 (3.4.2-2) via
libsqliteodbc (0.70-3), unixodbc (2.2.11-16build1), and odbcinst1debian1
(2.2.11-16build1). I can see the list of tables inside the database, but
if I do anything that tries to read a database table, Base disappears. I
have tried this with near-empty databases.

I am using Kubuntu 10.04 Hardy 64 bit Intel.

I loaded OpenOffice3 rc1 and saw the similar crash with a large sqlite
database. Perhaps the problem is in the ODBC libraries?
