[Bug 778168] Re: WiFi does not function on Acer 1830T with 11.04

2011-08-10 Thread richard mullens
I restored wireless operation by

dpkg --list | grep linux-image
Then
sudo apt-get remove linux-image-2.6.38-11-generic-pae
and rebooting.

Now I have

dpkg --list | grep linux-image
ii linux-image-2.6.38-10-generic-pae 2.6.38-10.46
Linux kernel image for version 2.6.38 on x86
rc linux-image-2.6.38-11-generic-pae 2.6.38-11.48
Linux kernel image for version 2.6.38 on x86
ii linux-image-2.6.38-8-generic-pae 2.6.38-8.42
Linux kernel image for version 2.6.38 on x86
ii linux-image-2.6.38-9-generic-pae 2.6.38-9.43
Linux kernel image for version 2.6.38 on x86

and System Monitor says Kernel Linux 2.6.38-10-generic-pae

Re: [Bug 778168] Missing required logs.

2011-07-19 Thread richard mullens
Hi,

You requested the following - which I then performed. I also set the status
to "New"

Your response was to issue the message again and reset the status to
Incomplete.

Why ?

The original bug reporter seems not to be subscribed - so he won't do
it.

The problem appears to be resolved with a more recent kernel.

[Bug 627672] Re: [Maverick Beta] install from USB stuck retrieving files 2/6 Hp Mini

2010-09-30 Thread richard mullens
I am now up and running with the release candidate. Hurrah !

There is still a problem for users who create their USB boot disk using an
older (than Maverick) release with usb-creator - as I did.
On booting from the USB disk one receives the message "Unknown keyword in
configuration file".
The problem is described at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1546737
The solution proposed there - to remove "ui " from the last line of
/syslinux/syslinux.cfg - worked for me.

[Bug 627672] Re: [Maverick Beta] install from USB stuck retrieving files 2/6 Hp Mini

2010-09-04 Thread richard mullens
Well, I tried the daily build of 20100904 and wrote the ISO to a USB
stick using Unetbootin, but on booting, it would go no further than
trying to get the CDROM drivers and eventually I just had to abort. ( I
was not trying to install - but rather use it to try before installing).

How is this done ?
I am using Unetbootin to create a bootable USB stick.

This is surely a disaster for netbook testing !

[Bug 555465] Re: sound preferences for Movie browser plugin not remembered

2010-05-02 Thread richard mullens
My mistake. The sound level for an aif file is remembered by the movie
player rather than the firefox plugin. However, I'm still of the
opinion that the volume level should be remembered by the plugin.

[Bug 555465] Re: sound preferences for Movie browser plugin not remembered

2010-05-02 Thread richard mullens
Thank you.

It does help to execute the comand gconftool --type int --set
/apps/totem/volume 100 as recommended for
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/527432 - but now the volume is set to
100 as the default - so if one adjusts the volume to, say, 50 then the
next time one plays an MP3 it starts at 100 again.

This seems to be in contrast to the behaviour when one plays an aif file
- for example http://www.mandarintools.com/sounds/wo3.aif - the volume
for this filetype is (and was before) remembered.

[Bug 482505] Re: External USB Disk does not automatically mount at boot (worked in Jaunty, not in Karmic).

2010-04-15 Thread richard mullens
I don't believe that this is fixed yet. I have Ubuntu Lucid Beta which
was up to date yesterday.

When I plug in a flash drive or an NTFS volume, the lights on the device
flash but it does not appear is the list of "Places".

In order to make it work I have added the following 3 lines to
/etc/rc.local

#use lspci |grep -i ehci to determine PCI device number of EHCI controller
#use result (00:1d.7) in command below
echo -n ":00:1d.7" /sys/bus/pci/drivers/ehci_hcd/unbind

I used those instructions because I found them at
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1307542&page=6 (entry #57)

I am using an Acer Aspire One - but the same problem exists using an
Asus PC with Karmic.

Perhaps this problem is slightly different to the one described above -
but in my opinion it is a show stopper !

[Bug 555465] [NEW] sound preferences for Movie browser plugin not remembered

2010-04-04 Thread richard mullens
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-media

Description:Ubuntu lucid (development branch)
Release:10.04

gnome-media:
  Installed: 2.30.0-0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 2.30.0-0ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 2.30.0-0ubuntu1 0
500 http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

I have some mp3 files on a website.
When I click on one (using firefox) the mp3 starts to play but it is inaudible.
So I click on the loudspeaker applet symbol on the top panel and select sound
preferences
I then select the "Applications" tab and adjust the Movie browser plugin volume
control to the desired volume.
After that song is finished I click on a new mp3 (or the same one) - but I have
to go through the same process again to hear the new song.

I believe that the Movie browser plugin volume setting should be
remembered.

[Bug 355857] Re: [Jaunty] DWL-G122 wireless not visible in Network Connections

2009-04-05 Thread richard mullens
With hindsight I think this is an error on my part.

The network manager applet shows the available connections ( I didn't notice it
- it is in a different position)
The network connections 'utility' now shows the wireless network I'm connected
to.

Sorry - my error.

[Bug 355857] [NEW] [Jaunty] DWL-G122 wireless not visible in Network Connections

2009-04-05 Thread richard mullens
Public bug reported:

I have a D-Link DWL-G122 Wireless G USB adapter (which is advertised on
the box "Works with Linux").

If I plug it into a system running Intrepid, I can see the wireless networks I
expect.
If I plug it into the same system running Jaunty, nothing is visible in the
Wireless section of System->Preferences->Network Connections.

This problem occurs on several systems - Acer Aspire One and a home
built Asus system.

On Intrepid lshw - C Network, last line is "configuration: broadcast=yes
multicast=yes wireless=IEEE 802.11g"
On Jaunty lshw - C Network, last line is "configuration: broadcast=yes
multicast=yes wireless=IEEE 802.11bg"

I use this adapter on the Acer Aspire One (Intrepid) where it sees
networks (Spanish Telephonica) which are invisible to the native ath5k
device.

I believe this is a serious regression.

[Bug 319825] Re: acer_wmi in Jaunty on Aspire One exposes non-functional (always disabled) rfkill device

2009-03-30 Thread richard mullens
For interest, the model name of the new 10.1" Acer Aspire One (windows)
appears to be AOD150

see
http://portablemonkey.com/article/acer-aspire-8.9-aoa150-vs-10.1-aod150-comparison/

There is more information about the names of these models at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acer_Aspire_One

Not sure when they'll hit the shops or how reliable this information is.

[Bug 324799] Re: enable wireless grayed in nm-applet, but NetworkManager configures wireless interface nevertheless

2009-02-16 Thread richard mullens
I have the same issue.
I'm using an Acer Aspire One.
I have Jaunty alpha 4 on a flash disk running in live mode.
The Enable Wireless text and checkbox in the network manager icon are greyed /
grayed out.
If I remove my RJ45 ethernet connection I have no connectivity.
If I plug in a Dlink DWL-G122, it is recognised but still the checkbox remains

[Bug 279186] Re: kernel oops on boot (dual-core Atom 330 board D945GCLF2)

2008-10-20 Thread richard mullens
I am using kernel Linux 2.6.27-3-generic (that's what System Monitor says).
With that kernel (from Intrepid Alpha 6), I can boot providing my system has
been powered off for some time (shall we say a minute). With the most recent
kernels it has been impossible to boot it seems.

I have not tried any earlier versions of the kernel. When I received my
board I downloaded Alpha 6.

Probably irrelevant but my BIOS is LF94510J.86A.0099.2008.0731.0303
There is a more recent BIOS -LF94510J.86A.0103.2008.0814.1910
but I have not installed it.

Perhaps the module at fault (if it is just one) is one which has had
multiple changes made to it.

[Bug 279186] Re: kernel oops on boot with "quiet" option

2008-10-19 Thread richard mullens
Leann:
Are the developers able to reproduce this/these crashes ?
It looks like a duplicate to this has been reported - bug 285518 - with
additional useful information.
Thanks
Richard

[Bug 285518] Re: Kernel 2.6.27-7.12-generic (x64) Atom 330 - SMP Opps

2008-10-19 Thread richard mullens
Thanks for the update. This seems very similar to bug 279186.
I started with Intrepid Alpha 6 and have been applying updates - the kernel
updates have made it harder and harder to boot. I see Oops and panics and long
traces.

[Bug 279186] Re: kernel oops on boot with "quiet" option

2008-10-07 Thread richard mullens
Luka: I only get kernel panics during the boot.
Sometimes the system will stop during the boot while the Ubuntu process screen
is being displayed. I'm not sure if that is a "panic" - but usually I get a
screenfull of messages when the problem occurs prior to the Ubuntu process
screen.

I also see the problem if I do a "restart" of the system - like after
updates have been applied.

My system has been running all night using bittorrent without a problem
- and I'm typing this on it now.

Thanks for your suggestions regarding the kernel.

For completeness I should say that the changes I made to my bios settings seem
not to be permanent:
Booting from USB - seemed to be lost - as did automatically starting after a
power failure. I guess this is unrelated.

My system isn't in a box yet.

[Bug 279186] Re: kernel oops on boot with "quiet" option

2008-10-06 Thread richard mullens
I have one of these boards also.
I'm running Ubuntu Intrepid Alpha 6 - x64.
I get kernel panics if I power off and then power on again within, say, 30
seconds.
If I wait before rebooting, the system comes up fine.
Once, I saw a diagnostic to the effect that there had been a thermal problem -
but I can hardly believe this as the system runs really cool - though I suppose
that the heatsink(s) may be badly mounted.

I'm using a picoPSU-60-WI fed by an 80W Sony laptop "brick" - and I've got a P4
connector plugged in of course.
The proximity of the PSU inductors to the memory card worries me a little.

[Bug 200287] Re: usb stick doesn't mount

2008-09-23 Thread richard mullens
This problem occurs in Intrepid Alpha 6 also.

I installed from a USB flash disk - which went ok.
I don't have a CDROM or DVD connected.

I see the line
/dev/sdb1 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto,exec,utf8 0 0
in /etc/fstab

After commenting out the line and reinserting the USB stick, I am able
to see its contents.

[Bug 273333] Re: Firefox window misplaced on first start

2008-09-22 Thread richard mullens
I went to System -> Preferences -> Screen Resolution.
I found that my resolution was set to 1400x1050.
When I changed the setting to 1280x1024 - the problem went away.

[Bug 273333] Re: Firefox window misplaced on first start

2008-09-22 Thread richard mullens
I see the same thing.
I'm using an Acer AL1711 LCD display - resolution 1280x1024.
The system is a Dual-Core Atom - D945GCLF2 - 2GB ram

When I ran the live distro from a USB drive, the top panel was off the
screen - and the firefox window controls were under it (ie obscured). I
could however see the bottom panel.

After installing, the top panel appears ok - but again the firefox
window is underneath - and now the bottom panel has disappeared.

By altering the display from the monitor controls I can see part of the
top and bottom panel simultaneously.
