Further experimentation, and help from the ubuntuforums led me to a work around. Disable 3D effects plugin in ccsm and the rotating cube no longer crashes when apps are open. I have a very similar problem since I installed 8.04 64bit. If there are any programs open on the desktop it will crash as soon as I press the buttons that activate the cube ctrlatlbutton1 or button1button2, the desktop crashes without the cube ever becoming visible. If there are no windows displayed on the desktop, either none open, or minimized, the rotate cube function works perfectly. I am running 8.04, all current updates, on a System76 Darter Ultra (aka Daru1, aka white Darter).
