[Bug 774850] Re: Sounds turns distorted; restarting pulse fixes

2011-05-15 Thread roadSurfer
I'm also seeing random distortion that affects all programs (games,
VirtualBox, MPlayer etc). Restarting pulseaudio fixes it, I can't see
any pattern to what causes it. Today I booted, played a bit of
Sauerbraten, checked Mumble worked, exited, started VBox and the
distortion occurred. This has only been a probelm for the past couple
of weeks.

Today I noticed that speech-dispatcher was still running, when I
killed that the distortion went away. But I have also heard the exact
same distrotion when playing some games, for example Trine, and simply
listening to pdocasts via SMPlayer.

I managed to grab a verbose Pulseaudio log of when it happened,
hopefully it can help.

System: Dell Dimenaion 9200 with SoundBlast xTreme Music card, sound
being played through headphone jack on front of case.

[Bug 741049] Re: Search bar does not use localised Google

Just noticed that the problem is not restricted to Google, it affects

[Bug 741049] [NEW] Search bar does not use localised Google

2011-03-23 Thread roadSurfer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

I have installed Ubuntu 10.10, amd64 from a UK mirror and set the
locale, datetime, keyboard etc to UK/GB.

Expected:
Firefox to respect locale settings.

What happened:
Firefox always used USA for search bar.

Workaround:
With the default install, FF 3.6 would always use google.com rather than
google.co.uk from the search bar, I had to hack google.xml under
/usr/lib/firefox-addons/searchplugins/en-GB to correct this.

After upgrading to FF4 using stable PPA, all localisations seem to be
ignored, I had expected my previous modifications to be carried over.
Even setting all options under about:config to en-GB did not get the
search bar to use google.co.uk and I had to hack google.xml under
/usr/lib/firefox-addons/searchplugins/en-GB and /usr/lib/firefox-
addons/searchplugins/en-US to get it to work.

** Affects: firefox (Ubuntu)

[Bug 741049] Re: Search bar does not use localised Google

2011-03-23 Thread roadSurfer
OK, I had been changing URLs (bar suggestion) from .com to .co.uk and
that was working fine.
Which ever way it is fixed, FF should be using the correct localisation from
the get-go like it does under Windows and I am still puzzled why the en-GB
settings point to the USA engine (rather than google.co.uk or using gl=uk).

It's a minor annoyance and easily solved by the user although the
neophyte may be hesitant to go editing XML files.

[Bug 666655] [NEW] Audio and Video calls in Empathy cause telepathy-haze segfault

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: telepathy-haze

Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick

Action: Started audio call using a SIPE account (Microsoft Office

Actual: Got logged out of OCS and was immediately logged back in, no

the same results, as did attempts with video calls.

I can't find out where Empathy is putting log messages, but I did find this in

[Bug 349463] Re: regression: ogg123 plays ogg file, mplayer plays as static, on jaunty

2010-06-25 Thread roadSurfer
I have been informed by Randy White that the embedded image is the culprit.
he found the information on a Russian site. http://www.gentoo.ru/node/17774
(Afraid I don't speak Russian)

I did as he suggested an used Easytag to remove the embedded pictures.
Bingo, the ogg file now plays. This isn't a great work around as it
would need done for every podcast that gets downloaded that contains
pictures.

So the problem would seem to be mplayer not supporting the picture tag
properly. Hope this helps someone create a fix.

2010-06-25 Thread roadSurfer
Just found something else, if I change the image to a different PNG (or JPG or
whatever created by the GIMP) the Ogg file plays fine. So it must be something
to do with the picture that is embedded in some Ogg files.
I have created two picture files (attached). When embedded, one works and the
other does not. I am not sure if it is related to the compression, file size
or what.
I hope this gives you more to go on.

[Bug 403135] Re: Notification area icon wrongly rendered/uses bg_color as a background (multiple apps)

2010-05-14 Thread roadSurfer
@stalka - That's a good point, but it doesn't actually work I am afraid.
1. Whilst changing the windows background colour will cause the sys tray icons
to update their background, they will still not match the actual theme
(Ambiance has a gradient in the panels, and you can't match that with a
simple colour change).
2. One's windows backgrounds will now be dark unreadable unless you change the
text colour, and white text on a dark background may not be what one wants. So
unless your panels happen to match your windows background, one'd still be
goosed. This is why Cleanlooks appears to work. The panels and the window
background happen to match, but the problem is not actually fixed.

One could switch to Radiance where the problem is less obvious I
guess.

There was a sort of similar issue with Skype and menus,
Options/General/Choose Style/Desktop Settings/Apply seems to fix that.
I am wondering if there is a sort-of similar switch for Wine? I've dug
around in gconf, but can't see anything obvious.

@Marcus Carlson - it might mask it I guess (I doubt you would get the
gradients). How does one access the background setting for panels? I
don't see it with the Theme customisation GUI which is the only way I
know how to set things like that.

@Tim Kosse - Thanks for the heads-up. I am only affected by the Wine
issue, but not being a dev I am not sure if Wine is dependent on
wxWidgets. Nor do I want to risk installing wxWidgets 2.9 in case I
futz my system up!

[Bug 576928] [NEW] Compiz causes Totem to display a black screen

2010-05-07 Thread roadSurfer
Public bug reported:

This is on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
Desktop: Gnome
Compiz: 1:0.8.4-0ubuntu15
Totem: 2.30.0git20100413-0ubuntu1
Chipset: Intel 82865G Integrated Graphics
Hardware: Dell Optiplex GX270

If I have Compiz enabled, Totem almost always display a black screen for video.
This includes the example Ogg Theora (UbuntuIsHumanity.ogv). If I move or
resize Totem, I will see a frame and then it gets replaced with all black.
Trying full-screen and other options does not seem to resolve it.
As soon as I disable Compiz, Totem works perfectly.

Sometimes Totem will display the video initially when I am running Compiz, but
as soon as I resize or move Totem the problem begins again.
This does not happen with Compiz disabled.

The ubuntu-bug tool seems to have fingered gstreamer0.10, from the
behaviour it looks more like a Compiz fault; but I am no expert.

[Bug 574752] Re: Ubuntu One client does not synchronize files

2010-05-04 Thread roadSurfer
I did as you asked. Twice! :o)

The first time I started U1 Client, nothing seemed to happen. Although today
it did authenticate the computer (I have never understood why the U1 Client and
Tomboy need separate registrations).
U1 Client said it was connected after a left-click.
I created content locally and uploaded content via the web. Nothing.
I opened Nautilus and tried to force the Ubuntu One to connect, nothing.
I left it for a while. Nothing.

I then stopped and started it again. Nothing.
I tried to get Nautilus to connect Ubuntu One again and nothing seemed to
happen. But the tool-top on U1 Client did briefly change to Connecting.
After a minute or two I noticed that it also said Updating 1 of 5 files after
a left click.
Files seemed to upload OK for a while (none downloaded) but then stalled
(Connection lost) appeared in the logs, but my net connection remained fine
as far as I am aware.
U1 Client said it was connected after a left-click.
I tried to connect again a few times from Nautilus, but nothing happened.
I closed down and zipped the logs.

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntuone-client

I have a 9.10 laptop which is running 9.10. I created a new account for myself
on it and since then it has never sync'd file from Ubuntu One.
The client app claims that all files are up to date, but it has brought nothing

I can see that the files are all correct in the web interface.

I have been trying to find a way to force syncing, authentication etc.
I deleted the computer's account in an effort to force something, but
nothing happens. Ubuntu One client says that it connects even though
the computer is not permitted.

I have no idea what is going wrong. Ubuntu One seems to have been very

[Bug 449648] Re: Synchronization via Tomboy web (Ubuntu One server) fails.

2010-01-18 Thread roadSurfer
Has something changed?

I am not getting any errors now, but notes are not synchronising at all.

If I create a new note and sync, that works.
If I edit that note and sync, nothing is updated (0 notes updated).
If I login via the web and update the note, then sync, nothing is updated.
Actually, sometimes the changes on the web do not take at all and I get a
Could not save changes message (no explanation) and at other times, even
though the change seems to get saved, when I click back on the note the changes
are lost.
If I delete a note from the web and then sync, the deletion takes effect.

If I delete the note and create it, sync works fine for the first time.
Afterwards I get the above. although the exception is not correctly reported (I
also found the problme by running Tomody in debug from the terminal - the
dialog just says Uploaded to server).
The fail note contains plain ASCII text, some bold, underlines and
strikethrough characters; that is all, nothing fancy.

I am also seeing Tomboy create duplicate notes when they are not required, not
sure if that is related.
1. Create a new note on client.
2. Sync.
3. Modify note on client
4. Sync.
5. You get new note and new note (old). It should just update the note.

[Bug 504677] [NEW] Blank, modal dialog after update

2010-01-08 Thread roadSurfer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mozilla-firefox

Using Ubuntu 9.10 (have seen this on previous versions as well)
Firefox upgrading from 3.5.6 to 3.5.7 (have seen behaviour on previous upgrades)

Allowed Update Manager to update vaious items including FF whilst FF was
running.
I expected the update to complate and then to either be able to continue using
FF or to have a message telling me it needs to restart. I got neither.
Once the upgrade was finished, FF would attempt to display a dialog, but it
come out at about 8px X 24px. When expanded this dialog is completely blank.
You can see this dialog as in the attached image as a black blob just to the
right of The Register on the red background.

This dialog should either not display or give a meaningful message and
allow the user to restart FF.

[Bug 482134] [NEW] rdesktop seamless constantly sets windows to 'Always on top'

2009-11-13 Thread roadSurfer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rdesktop

Details:
Description:Ubuntu 9.10
Release:9.10
rdesktop: 1.6.0-2ubuntu2

Expected:
Gnome window settings to mirror those of remote machine

Actual:
Gnome Always on top seems to get set and then 'stick' for some reason.

Recreation:
If I launch rdesktop like this:
rdesktop -A -s c:\seamlessrdp\seamlessrdpshell.exe explorer remote-ip:3389 -u
user_name -p password

Then I get the Windows Explorer bar (I have set compiz to remove window
decorations to by-pass the seamless window bug).
From there I start Outlook.

It starts with Always on top checked. I right-click on the kick-bar
entry and remove the check. The Gnome window will behave normally for a
while. If I then use the Windows minimise button (-) and then click on
the kick-bar entry to restore Outlook, it has had the Gnome Always on
top re-checked.

At first I thought the problem was caused by the Windows Explorer bar
always being on top and unchecking the Keep the taskbar on top of other
windows seemed to reduce the problem slightly. However, normal
operations within Outlook cause the Gnome Always on top option to get
set again (e.g. Tools/Options?Mail Format/Signatures/OK, then New/Mail
Message).

My only guess is that somehow the attributes of the modal dialogs is
getting persisted, but I can't be sure.

I'm happy to provide any logs should they be needed (I'm afraid I'm
still fairly new to Linux, so I'd need to be told where these log files
reside).

I have downgraded the mesa drivers to 7.4.0-ubuntu3.2 (the most recent I

As this is a new install, I have no xorg.conf (it's my understanding

[Bug 411451] Re: [ATI][KMS][R300] Compiz boots to white screen with Mesa 7.6+git

2009-10-31 Thread roadSurfer
I have an ATI Radeon Mobility 9000 (rv250) and have noted a serious drop in
performance with Compiz in Karmic.
The whole setup seems sluggish and the Benchmark utility (not a rigorous test,
I know) reports 11fps when it used to be 100+fps under Jaunty (an basic Intel
chipset system I have reports around 30fps).
The ATI system is a fresh install, the Intel is an upgrade.
Happy to provide any logs or configs...not sure if the upgrade Intel system
still has an xorg.conf, I'll need to check (not sure if it would make any
difference anyway).

I can confirm the same problem on an ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 at 1400x1050.
This system was fine on Jaunty, just done a full install of Karmic and I now
see this.
When Compiz is running, the Benchmark app reports very poor performance (circa
11fps when it used to be 100+fps).
The KMS update had no effect.

As I am still new, not sure what other info to provide

[Bug 206528] Re: gnome-display-properties: no way to set which is the primary monitor

2009-10-06 Thread roadSurfer
Of course, there are also certain driver level issues that can have a
serious impact on functionality. For example, I believe it is
impossible to control the primary display if the Intel drivers are being
used; on a laptop (the most common place to use multi-head I think)
these will almost always regard an external display as primary (I got
stuck with the monitor on top issue. I am not sure what features are
available from Nvidia, ATI or the free-drivers or if these features
remain consistent across the range. How these discrepancies get
addressed is, I am afraid, beyond me.

So even if additions were made to Gnome, I seriously doubt the required
features and controls would be consistently available.
I am afraid I am no big expert on the matter - I have simply given up trying to
get multi-head to work as it was just too difficult and this has, basically,
halted my attempts to adopt Linux for now.

I have only managed to find documentation on behaviour from external sites
(i.e. not run by the Gnome project), one example is
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Xorg_RandR_1.2#Note_for_Gnome_users so perhaps my
information is wrong?

[Bug 206528] Re: gnome-display-properties: no way to set which is the primary monitor

2009-07-24 Thread roadSurfer
Can I second (third?) this? Not being able to explicitly define the
primary display is a serious limitation to me as an average end-user.

With a laptop the on-board display is (generally speaking) primary,
regardless of what external display device is attached as that external
device could be removed at any time. Setting the primary based on
position is next to useless (external display are often above a laptop
display)

I would not call this a wishlist item, I would call it a must have.
Compare how hard it is to configure multiple displays with X and how
easy it is with XP. Guess what one of the first things a new Linux user
with a laptop will try isyup, dual screens.

The gnome display manager should include this new (vital) feature and
the other xrandr functions.

This is still a problem almost 3 years after the fact and the upstream
article is now closed.

Is Synergy even under development any more?

[Bug 368273] Re: Jaunty 9.04 Blind to XP's Shared Network Printer

2009-04-28 Thread roadSurfer
I am coming from a related discussion on UbuntuForums that concerns
similar behaviour (although related to folders)

Having upgraded 3 systems from 8.10 to 9.04 (2 physical, 1 virtual) I
have been seeing the exact same behaviour on them all. The SMBClient
set up that was working perfectly on 8.10 was not functioning on 9.04
after upgrade.

It would not show member of the workgroup or domain (smbtree would
come back empty), but I could navigate directly to a folder on a machine
I knew to be shared using the nautilus address bar (smb://ip
address/shared folder).

On all three systems I found that installing Firestarter, allowing ports
137-149 and 445 as well as editing /etc/firestarter/inbound/setup as
shown below cured the issue.

From:
# Allow response traffic
$IPT -A INBOUND -p tcp -m state --state ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT
$IPT -A INBOUND -p udp -m state --state ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT

To:
# Allow response traffic
$IPT -A INBOUND -p tcp -m state --state ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT
$IPT -A INBOUND -p udp -m state --state NEW,ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT

I am not sure why this should have any effect, I did not need to do this
on Intrepid.

SMBClient info:
u...@machine:~$ apt-cache policy smbclient
smbclient:
  Installed: 2:3.3.2-1ubuntu3

500 http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com jaunty/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
u...@machine:~$ smbclient --version
Version 3.3.2

My apologies if this is not related.

[Bug 359839] Re: [rv350] DRI fails; drm module complains about agp ioremap

2009-04-24 Thread roadSurfer
I think my issue may be down to the lack of support for i865 based graphics
cards in Jaunty.
I hope this is addressed in some future release.

compiz-check:
 Distribution: Ubuntu 9.04
 Desktop environment: GNOME
Graphics chip: Intel Corporation 82865G Integrated Graphics Controller
(rev 02)
 Driver in use: intel
 Rendering method: AIGLX

Checking if it's possible to run Compiz on your system...

 Checking for texture_from_pixmap...[ OK ]
Checking for non power of two support... [ OK ]
Checking for composite extension... [ OK ]
 Checking for FBConfig...[ OK ]
 Checking for hardware/setup problems... [FAIL]

There has been (at least) one error detected with your setup:
 Error: Software Rasterizer in use

[Bug 365962] [NEW] Samba failed to install correctly 8.10 - 9.04

2009-04-24 Thread roadSurfer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: samba

During the upgrade from 8.10 - 9.04, Samba did not install for some
reason.

The install system brought be to launchpad system and asked I log a bug.
I am afraid I don't many details, I can provide log files but as I am still
very new to Linux, I'd need to be to which files and exactly where they are.
(Sorry).

I have subsequently forced a full re-install of Samba and got some
functionality back, but it is still not working properly (Linux can
browse the Windows network, but not the other way round). I am not sure
if this is down to a problem with Jaunty or my own inexperience.

ProblemType: Package
Architecture: i386
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 9.04

[Bug 359839] Re: [rv350] DRI fails; drm module complains about agp ioremap

2009-04-24 Thread roadSurfer
I am also seeing a failure of compiz after the upgrade from 8.10 to
9.04. It was all working fine on 8.10 and remained working until I did a
restart.

Checking for Xgl: not present.
xset q doesn't reveal the location of the log file. Using fallback
/var/log/Xorg.0.log
Detected PCI ID for VGA:
Checking for texture_from_pixmap: not present.
Trying again with indirect rendering:
Checking for texture_from_pixmap: present.
Checking for non power of two support: present.
Checking for Composite extension: present.
Checking screen 1Comparing resolution (1280x1024) to maximum 3D texture size
(2048): Passed.
Checking for Software Rasterizer: present.
Software rasterizer detected, abortingaborting and using fallback:
/usr/bin/metacity

I think maybe there was is a failure in the upgrade process and I had an
abort from the samba upgrade and no request to restart once the entire
process was complete, despite the kernel update.

I am happy to provide configs/logs etc, but I am still very new to Linux
to I would need details on what log and its exact location.
