[Bug 774850] Re: Sounds turns distorted; restarting pulse fixes
I'm also seeing random distortion that affects all programs (games, VirtualBox, MPlayer etc). Restarting pulseaudio fixes it, I can't see any pattern to what causes it. Today I booted, played a bit of Sauerbraten, checked Mumble worked, exited, started VBox and the distortion occurred. This has only been a probelm for the past couple of weeks. Today I noticed that "speech-dispatcher" was still running, when I killed that the distortion went away. But I have also heard the exact same distrotion when playing some games, for example Trine, and simply listening to pdocasts via SMPlayer. I managed to grab a verbose Pulseaudio log of when it happened, hopefully it can help. System: Dell Dimenaion 9200 with SoundBlast xTreme Music card, sound being played through headphone jack on front of case. ** Attachment added: "A section of log from when the distortion kicekd in." https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/774850/+attachment/2129479/+files/pulse_snippet.log -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/774850 Title: Sounds turns distorted; restarting pulse fixes -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 741049] Re: Search bar does not use localised Google
OK, I had been changing URLs (bar "suggestion") from ".com" to ".co.uk" and that was working fine. Which ever way it is fixed, FF should be using the correct localisation from the get-go like it does under Windows and I am still puzzled why the "en-GB" settings point to the USA engine (rather than "google.co.uk" or using "gl=uk"). It's a minor annoyance and easily solved by the user although the neophyte may be hesitant to go editing XML files. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/741049 Title: Search bar does not use localised Google -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 741049] [NEW] Search bar does not use localised Google
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: firefox I have installed Ubuntu 10.10, amd64 from a UK mirror and set the locale, date&time, keyboard etc to UK/GB. Expected: Firefox to respect locale settings. What happened: Firefox always used USA for search bar. Workaround: With the default install, FF 3.6 would always use "google.com" rather than "google.co.uk" from the search bar, I had to hack "google.xml" under "/usr/lib/firefox-addons/searchplugins/en-GB" to correct this. After upgrading to FF4 using stable PPA, all localisations seem to be ignored, I had expected my previous modifications to be carried over. Even setting all options under "about:config" to "en-GB" did not get the search bar to use "google.co.uk" and I had to hack "google.xml" under "/usr/lib/firefox-addons/searchplugins/en-GB" and "/usr/lib/firefox- addons/searchplugins/en-US" to get it to work. ** Affects: firefox (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/741049 Title: Search bar does not use localised Google -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 403135] Re: Notification area icon wrongly rendered/uses bg_color as a background (multiple apps)
@stalka - That's a good point, but it doesn't actually work I am afraid. 1. Whilst changing the windows background colour will cause the sys tray icons to update their background, they will still not match the actual theme ("Ambiance" has a gradient in the panels, and you can't match that with a simple colour change). 2. One's windows backgrounds will now be dark unreadable unless you change the text colour, and white text on a dark background may not be what one wants. So unless your panels happen to match your windows background, one'd still be goosed. This is why "Cleanlooks" appears to work. The panels and the window background happen to match, but the problem is not actually fixed. One could switch to "Radiance" where the problem is less obvious I guess. There was a "sort of" similar issue with Skype and menus, Options/General/Choose Style/"Desktop Settings"/Apply seems to fix that. I am wondering if there is a sort-of similar switch for Wine? I've dug around in gconf, but can't see anything obvious. @Marcus Carlson - it might mask it I guess (I doubt you would get the gradients). How does one access the background setting for panels? I don't see it with the Theme customisation GUI which is the only way I know how to set things like that. @Tim Kosse - Thanks for the heads-up. I am only affected by the Wine issue, but not being a dev I am not sure if Wine is dependent on wxWidgets. [Bug 504677] [NEW] Blank, modal dialog after update
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: mozilla-firefox Using Ubuntu 9.10 (have seen this on previous versions as well) Firefox upgrading from 3.5.6 to 3.5.7 (have seen behaviour on previous upgrades) Allowed Update Manager to update vaious items including FF whilst FF was running. I expected the update to complate and then to either be able to continue using FF or to have a message telling me it needs to restart. I got neither. Once the upgrade was finished, FF would attempt to display a dialog, but it come out at about 8px X 24px. When expanded this dialog is completely blank. [Bug 482134] [NEW] rdesktop seamless constantly sets windows to 'Always on top'
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: rdesktop Details: Description:Ubuntu 9.10 Release:9.10 rdesktop: 1.6.0-2ubuntu2 Expected: Gnome window settings to mirror those of remote machine Actual: Gnome "Always on top" seems to get set and then 'stick' for some reason. Recreation: If I launch rdesktop like this: rdesktop -A -s "c:\seamlessrdp\seamlessrdpshell.exe explorer" remote-ip:3389 -u user_name -p password Then I get the Windows Explorer bar (I have set compiz to remove window decorations to by-pass the seamless window bug). >From there I start Outlook. It starts with "Always on top" checked. I right-click on the kick-bar entry and remove the check. The Gnome window will behave normally for a while. If I then use the Windows minimise button (-) and then click on the kick-bar entry to restore Outlook, it has had the Gnome "Always on top" re-checked. At first I thought the problem was caused by the Windows Explorer bar always being on top and unchecking the "Keep the taskbar on top of other windows" seemed to reduce the problem slightly. However, normal operations within Outlook cause the Gnome "Always on top" option to get set again (e.g. Tools/Options?Mail Format/Signatures/OK, then New/Mail Message). My only guess is that somehow the attributes of the modal dialogs is getting persisted, but I can't be sure. [Bug 206528] Re: gnome-display-properties: no way to set which is the primary monitor
Of course, there are also certain driver level issues that can have a serious impact on functionality. For example, I believe it is impossible to control the primary display if the Intel drivers are being used; on a laptop (the most common place to use multi-head I think) these will almost always regard an external display as primary (I got stuck with the "monitor on top" issue. I am not sure what features are available from Nvidia, ATI or the free-drivers or if these features remain consistent across the range. How these discrepancies get addressed is, I am afraid, beyond me. So even if additions were made to Gnome, I seriously doubt the required features and controls would be consistently available. I am afraid I am no big expert on the matter - I have simply given up trying to get multi-head to work as it was just too difficult and this has, basically, halted my attempts to adopt Linux for now. I have only managed to find documentation on behaviour from external sites (i.e. not run by the Gnome project), one example is http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Xorg_RandR_1.2#Note_for_Gnome_users so perhaps my information is wrong? -- gnome-display-properties: no way to set which is the primary monitor https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/206528 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 206528] Re: gnome-display-properties: no way to set which is the primary monitor
Can I second (third?) this? Not being able to explicitly define the primary display is a serious limitation to me as an average end-user. With a laptop the on-board display is (generally speaking) primary, regardless of what external display device is attached as that external device could be removed at any time. Setting the primary based on position is next to useless (external display are often above a laptop display) I would not call this a "wishlist" item, I would call it a "must have". Compare how hard it is to configure multiple displays with X and how easy it is with XP. Guess what one of the first things a new Linux user with a laptop will try isyup, dual screens. The gnome display manager should include this new (vital) feature and the other xrandr functions. -- gnome-display-properties: no way to set which is the primary monitor https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/206528 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I am coming from a related discussion on UbuntuForums that concerns similar behaviour (although related to folders) Having upgraded 3 systems from 8.10 to 9.04 (2 physical, 1 virtual) I have been seeing the exact same behaviour on them all. It would not show member of the workgroup or domain ("smbtree" would come back empty), but I could navigate directly to a folder on a machine I knew to be shared using the nautilus address bar (smb:///). On all three systems I found that installing Firestarter, allowing ports 137-149 and 445 as well as editing "/etc/firestarter/inbound/setup" as shown below cured the issue.
