[Bug 1810183] Re: numpad on touchpad doesn't work in ASUS Zenbook 14

2021-07-25 Thread Robbie
Just tested on Arch Linux and GX701GX-XB78 and tried all combinations of
model/layout...no dice.

This version DOES work for me
https://gitlab.com/Thraen/gx735_touchpad_numpad but I have to stop and
restart it every time I reboot. Perhaps you could merge some of his
methods into yours Mohamed? Yours seems to be a bit more robust.

[Bug 1875283] [NEW] executing grub-install failed

2020-04-26 Thread Robbie Blackburn
Public bug reported:

Performing a new install on a SSD device (sdc).

Installing xubuntu itself to a new ext4 partition on the drive seems to
work fine, but at the end of the installer it crashes with the error:

[Bug 1810183] Re: numpad on touchpad doesn't work in ASUS Zenbook 14

2020-03-23 Thread Robbie
While not an actual driver...I found this utility on reddit...It's a
python script that checks for the mode, and if you're in the num pad
mode, it evaluates position of tap and sends numpad presses. Works for
me!

[Bug 1706499] Re: NMI Watchdog Soft Lockup CPU Frozen for 22s

2017-08-10 Thread Robbie Crash
This is a fresh installation on a freshly built system, so I can't say
if a prior kernel did/would've worked. I've reinstalled twice from
different downloads, and via different media and have encountered the
same issues. I installed Windows 10 as well, and encountered no issues
with performance or stability over the week/week and a half I had it
installed, so I don't think it's hardware.

I'll install the upstream kernel and test again tonight.

Thanks for helping. :)

[Bug 1706499] [NEW] NMI Watchdog Soft Lockup CPU Frozen for 22s

2017-07-25 Thread Robbie Crash
Private bug reported:

Whenever switching from high to low, or low to high CPU loads I
encounter the attached lockup. This happens at least twice daily when
the server is left alone, more often when it actually does anything.

The CPU# changes with each crash, but seems to always be for 22s.

[Bug 1295141] Re: Toshiba Qosmio X75-A7298 - Can't Adjust Brightness

Lonnie, I have this same laptop. When booting the 3.14 or higher
kernels, you don't get a screen freeze at boot unless running
"nomodeset" or the proprietary Nvidia drivers? I boot with the kernel
mode nomodeset, but then I don't have any way to control brightness.

[Bug 472294] Re: [Dell Inc. Dell XPS420] suspend/resume failure [non-free: fglrx]

2014-09-26 Thread Robbie
I have also not been able to suspend my Dell XPS 420. This has been
happening for many years (probably since 2010).

On 14.04 suspend will appear to work in that the power light starts
blinking. However, the computer can not be woken up from suspend, and I
must hold down the power button in order to turn off power.

Please let me know what data I should collect and how to collect it.

[Bug 868034] Re: Huawei E220 and E1550 can't connect on Ubuntu 11.10/12.04

2014-07-26 Thread Mark Robbie
This problem has completely cleared up for me since installing 14.04
about two months ago. Previously the problem would be seen almost every
day and I had to either run usb_modeswitch to reset the modem or bounce
modem-manager, so two months without a problem is great.

Thanks to whomever finally fixed this.

[Bug 1305839] Re: FFe: Support for Third Party Driver Installation

2014-04-14 Thread Robbie Williamson
So I was informed that prompting for non-free during installation would
break unmanned installs of MAAS, which causes problems for our cloud
install plans. I'm all for supporting our commitment to non-free, but
at the end of the day, we're also committed to ensuring our users have a
great experience with Ubuntu. If users are unable to install because
their drives aren't recognized, then the entire non-free argument
becomes irrelevant. The argument of telling our partners to opensource
their drivers, is valid, but will take awhile, e.g. Nvidia on the
desktop...and could possibly never occur. I'll leave the decision up to
the engineers and release team, but I hope we can come up with something
that allows our users the freedom to use Ubuntu on the hardware of their
choice.

[Bug 1305839] Re: FFe: Support for Third Party Driver Installation

2014-04-14 Thread Robbie Williamson
I'm in favor of the approach suggested in comment #12, whereby we prompt
the user during the first install of MAAS, as to whether they want to
allow the install of non-free drivers for such cases where there are no
free ones available, e.g. . Once they answer, we point
out that the setting can be reversed in the "Settings" menu if the MAAS
GUI. Could we move forward with this approach?

[Bug 1201470] Re: Intel wireless microcode driver failure in Saucy causes disconnects

I agree that this particular issue seems to be Intel driver specific.
The Dell related issue feels like a similar symptom resulting from the
same problem, but should be addressed separately.

So the problem is also occurring with a Precise installed Dell laptop

[Bug 1194574] [NEW] indicator-datetime-service crashed with SIGSEGV in dbusmenu_menuitem_child_delete()

2013-06-25 Thread Robbie Williamson
Public bug reported:

Probably a dup of bug #1133682, but filing just in case. It appears to
happen when my message indicator is active. I use pidgin for IRC, so
it's pretty active during the day. I usually notice my cpu fan spinning
at a high rate, then I do a 'top' to see unity-panel-service running at
100% load. I kill -9 that process, it respawns to a normal load, and
the crash occurs.

[Bug 1193094] [NEW] cups-backend-bjnp not working

2013-06-20 Thread Robbie Williamson
Public bug reported:

I tried adding my printer (MX700) to my mother's newly installed 13.04
machine and it didn't work. The system printer application failed to
locate the printer on the network. I manually added the printer uri and
the system would communicate with the printer, but printing would fail
before ever starting...with some odd backend communications error in the
cups-error log.

I then went and installed the older version built for raring out of my
ppa (robbiew/cups-bjnp) and the system discovered the network printer
just fine and printed. I had to return the laptop to my mother, but my
Saucy installed system has the same old cups-bjnp package which
works...I can probably recreate and attach logs, but only willing to do
it if someone wants to actively debug this. Otherwise, I'll just stay
on my ppa build.

[Bug 1172215] Re: [FFe] Please include juju-core 1.10.0 in Ubuntu 13.04

2013-04-24 Thread Robbie Williamson
Given the timing, I admit the release team is ultimately "do their job",
and am mostly frustrated with my own team's efforts around this. The
right approach is to leverage backports and get the package fixed and
uploaded into 13.10 ASAP. We can then update
websites/wikis/documentation to make sure our users know how to make
sure they're using the supported version of juju.

[Bug 1172215] Re: [FFe] Please include juju-core 1.10.0 in Ubuntu 13.04

2013-04-24 Thread Robbie Williamson
There is a flawed assumption in the above statement, that users will
know to enable backports in the first place.

I understand the concern of the release team, but the push for getting
this version into 13.04 is to help alleviate the current less-than
desirable situation in the juju community, and ultimately get our users
over to the supported version of juju going forward. I strongly feel
that the efforts to block this are more philosophical, than practical.

[Bug 1155327] Re: skype crashed with SIGSEGV in malloc@plt()

2013-03-22 Thread Robbie Williamson
In terms of outlook on a fix, because both skype and nvidia produce
closed-source binaries for Ubuntu, Ubuntu developers have little options
besides reporting the issue upstream and waiting for a fix.

[Bug 1155327] Re: skype crashed with SIGSEGV in malloc@plt()

2013-03-22 Thread Robbie Williamson
@Rainer,

Actually, having a workaround by definition lessens the severity, as if
someone wants to still run Skype, they can. With that said, I
understand your frustration...and have a solution ;-):

1) Place the attached "skype-workaround" file in /usr/local/bin:
 $ sudo cp skype-workaround /usr/local/bin
2) Set it to execution mode:
 $ chmod 755 /usr/local/bin/skype-workaround
3) Backup /usr/share/applications/skype.desktop:
 $ sudo cp  /usr/share/applications/skype.desktop /root/skype.desktop.bak
4) Place the attached "skype.desktop" file in /usr/share/applications:
$ sudo cp skype.desktop /usr/share/applications

Done. Now when you or your wife select the icon, it should start.

[Bug 1154917] [NEW] Boot hang after initrd load

2013-03-13 Thread Robbie Williamson
Public bug reported:

The machine hangs immediately after initrd image is loaded with a blank
aubergin-ish screen. I can CTRL-ALT-DELETE to reboot only. Booting in
recovery mode doesn't tell me anything either. I am able to
successfully boot into the 3.8.0-11 kernel.

[Bug 1128273] Re: IRC Plugin unable to load

2013-02-20 Thread Robbie Williamson
There appears to be a fix documented upstream:
   https://developer.pidgin.im/ticket/15517
"When building with SASL support, the IRC plugin needs to link against
libsasl2, otherwise it will fail to load with the following error:
(03:20:54) plugins: probing /usr/lib/purple-2/libirc.so
(03:20:54) plugins: /usr/lib/purple-2/libirc.so is not loadable: undefined
symbol: sasl_client_step
This is a new issue in Pidgin 2.10.7 since it's the first release that adds
SASL support for IRC (https://hg.pidgin.im/pidgin/main/rev/bbd52f93184e)."

[Bug 1118446] Re: Network Manager randomly dropping wifi

2013-02-11 Thread Robbie Williamson
So no drops since I enabled the 11n_disable option. It appears iwlwifi
support for 11n hasn't progressed as much as I'd hope. :/

2013-02-08 Thread Robbie Williamson
Okay. So let me first disable the 11n stuff, as I know that used to be
an issue in the past. If it still happens, I'll try the quantal kernel.

I'm going to disable 11n to see if this is just the same old Intel-can't
-do-11n-well issue we've had for a few releases.

[Bug 1103755] Re: 8086:4238 wireless fails to send/receive data intermittently

2013-02-08 Thread Robbie Williamson
Hey Joseph,

I think after doing some more digging, this is a Network Manager bug (I filed
it under bug #1118446). I checked Craig's WifiSyslog.txt attachment and it has
the same error message as what is recorded in this new bug:
 NetworkManager[pid]:  nl_recvmsgs() error: (-33) Dump inconsistency
detected, interrupted

I also think it's NM, because I can recover by running: sudo service
network-manager restart.

I can still test your kernels, but I think if it were iwlwifi related,
bouncing nm would not have helped. Thoughts?

[Bug 1118446] [NEW] Network Manager randomly dropping wifi

Public bug reported:

I see the following messages in /var/log/syslog:
