[Bug 1575053] Re: Please move the "$HOME/snap" directory to a less obtrusive location

2020-04-05 Thread Robin Lundgren
I agree with everything stated in comment #2 except that it's not 2017,
*It's 2020, come on.*

Call me a superficial but I enjoy a nice and tidy home folder and this
is the only reason why I go for the repos (currently on Void Linux) or
in certain cases flatpaks over snaps. I would love to go for snaps. Just
listened to episode 2 of season 13 of the Ubuntu Podcast where Popey had
packaged up "ncspot" into a snap. I go to the ncspot github page and try
installing it with cargo, the rust package thing and it fails with
horrible error messages - no ncspot for me then.

Who do I pay and how much does the person in charge/responsible want to
fix this? People all-over the planet will rejoice when this gets fixed.

[Bug 787031] Re: installing thinkfan package does not make thinkfan usable

2020-04-04 Thread robin
I installed thinkfan too, no change.

I tried
$ systemctl status thinkfan.service

and got:

● thinkfan.service - simple and lightweight fan control program

   Active: inactive (dead)

so I restarted the service then checked the status and got:

[Bug 1665151] Re: Apache ignores disable TLSv1.0

2019-12-03 Thread Robin Kluth
I had the same problem - had!

It turns out, that the SSLCipherSuite list on the default vHopst (as
reported of apachectl -D DUMP_VHOSTS) has to be capable of TLSv1.1
ciphers. It is also needed, that the default vHost has TLSv1.1 enabled
in order to use that on other vHosts.

So, the default vHost is the key here. I cant believe that this should
be correct. If I dont want to enable TLSv1.1 on the default but on the
3rd vHost, this must be working.

[Bug 1853373] [NEW] Print problems for double sided, multiple copies

2019-11-20 Thread Robin Emery
Public bug reported:

My HP Envy 5030 driver in Ubuntu 19.10 allows for double sided and
multiple copy printing, however, I am experiencing an issue where only
one copy prints.

It prints fine, double sided, but only one copy is spooled.

Looking at the bug list here, there was a similar issue with Evince and
LibreOffice documents back in 2010.

I'm not using any office software to print my PDF file, only the in-
built Document Viewer.

[Bug 1724572] Re: vino-server crashed with SIGSEGV in _XSend()

Hi,
Using chromium for doing a fast.com speedtest, while the test is running,
clicking with the left button anywhere outside the chromium window and you will
get the crash.
Sometimes just visiting fast.com, typing enter, same with speedtest.net

I'm using vino on a NVIDIA Geforce GTX 950 with last version of RealVNC
Viewer as client, and headless configuration using "edid.bin" file and

[Bug 1833124] [NEW] dh_installman ruins man pages on Minimal Ubuntu

2019-06-17 Thread Robin Gustafsson
Public bug reported:

`dh_installman` uses the `man` program to convert man pages to UTF-8. On
Minimal Ubuntu images (18.10 and above), /usr/bin/man is replaced by a
shell script outputting a notice about the lack of man pages and the
option to "unminimize" the image. Thus, instead of recoding the man
pages, it replaces all man pages with this output.

See for example this bug reported against Docker:

This has been observed on the minimal versions of cosmic and disco, but
is likely equally applicable to the minimal version of eoan since it,
too, includes the /usr/bin/man replacement.

[Bug 1830986] [NEW] nodejs-dev and php7.2-dev have conflicting requirements in Bionic

2019-05-29 Thread Robin Munn
Public bug reported:

Because of
https://bugs.launchpad.net/debian/+source/nodejs/+bug/1779863, the
nodejs-dev package now depends on libssl1.0-dev. The php7.2-dev package
depends on libssl-dev, but libssl1.0-dev conflicts with libssl-dev. This
makes it impossible to have nodejs-dev (or anything that depends on it,
such as npm) and php7.2-dev installed at the same time, which is
something that web developers might want to do pretty often (for
example, I just ran into this issue while trying to set up a new laptop,
running Bionic, for web development).

To reproduce: `sudo apt install npm php7.2-dev`

Package versions I observed this in:

npm 3.5.2-0ubuntu4, which depends on
node-gyp 3.6.2-1ubuntu1, which depends on
nodejs-dev 8.10.0~dfsg-2ubuntu0.4, whose LibSSL dependency conflicts with
php7.2-dev 7.2.17-0ubuntu0.18.04.1

Thanks for your comments

@Hui Wang: The additional line worked. Following your steps the bug could no
longer be reproduced with kernel 5.1.5-050105. Thanks a lot. Would it be
suitable to apply these changes as default or to propose them commented out in
the config file?

and without: The bug could not be reproduced in both cases.

2019-05-26 Thread Robin
Indeed my conclusion was wrong because I mixed up the versions. The bug
does affect some newer versions although it seems that it was solved in
the meantime before reappearing again.

To correct, I observed the following:

* The bug does NOT affect kernel version 4.18.0-15 (Tested using a Live install
of 18.04.2)
* The bug does NOT affect kernel version 4.20.17-042017 (Tested on my install
of 19.04 with a manually installed kernel)
* The bug DOES affect kernel version 5.0.0-13 (Tested on my install of 19.04
with a manually installed kernel)
* The bug DOES affect kernel version 5.0.0-15 (I used this version when I filed
the bug report some days after I installed Ubuntu on my laptop)
* The bug DOES affect kernel version 5.0.0-16 (Tested on my install of 19.04
with an update from disco-proposed using apt-get)
* The bug does NOT affect kernel version 5.0.1-050001 (Tested on my install of
19.04 with a manually installed kernel)
* The bug DOES affect newly build kernel version 5.1.5-050105 (Tested on my
install of 19.04 with a manually installed kernel)

I conclude, that the bug was introduced between 4.20.17 and 5.0.0-13, then
solved between 5.0.0-16 and 5.0.1 only to be reintroduced in the most recent
build (5.1.5).
As you might notice, I am only a user, so I have limited skills. The change
might also come from something else but I did not purposely change any setting
or behavior while I tried the different versions. I tested the sound using the
button in the sound-settings of Ubuntu and Spotify (both after a fresh boot and
after suspend).

[Bug 1829621] Re: [HP Laptop 14-ma0xxx] No sound after suspend

2019-05-26 Thread Robin
I was now able to try a few different versions leading to the following results:
* The bug does not affect kernel version 4.18.0-15 (Tested using a Live install
of 18.04.2)
* The bug does not affect kernel version 4.20.17-042017 (Tested on my install
of 19.04 with a manually installed kernel)
* The bug does not affect kernel version 5.0.1-050001 (Tested on my install of
19.04 with a manually installed kernel)
* The bug does affect newly build kernel version 5.1.5-050105 (Tested on my
install of 19.04 with a manually installed kernel)

So the bug must be introduced between 4.20.17 and 5.0.0-15.
I hope this can be a good starting point for troubleshooting.

[Bug 1829621] Re: [HP Laptop 14-ma0xxx] No sound after suspend

2019-05-20 Thread Robin
@vanvugt Thank you for your answer.
I tried the kernel versions 5.0.0-13 and 4.3.0-04 as well. For the first one,
the same problem occured (sound only after a fresh boot) and the second one
couldn't be installed correctly because of missing libraries (a boot was
possible, but e.g. the mouse pointer was not moving).
I have already tried to reconfigure pulseaudio, to force alsa-audio to reload
(it does reload but doesn't change anything).

Here is my output of aplay:
$ aplay -L

[Bug 1829621] [NEW] No sound after suspend

2019-05-18 Thread Robin
Public bug reported:

On my Laptop sound is working only after a fresh reboot. Every time I
suspend the laptop, I can no longer use the internal speakers or any
headphones. I tried a lot of solutions suggested online none of them
working for me. Since this problem is very annoying I would really
appreciate if a fix would be available.

Thanks a lot :)

[Bug 1822269] [NEW] mktemp does not handle -p option when --tmpdir option goes after -p option

Public bug reported:

# This is correct. The printed temp file name is in folder /

# after swapping the options, mktemp do not handle the -p option correctly.
# swapping options should not affect the output.

[Bug 1821659] [NEW] "show location of pointer" function hijacks control keys causing remote desktop application not sending control keys

2019-03-25 Thread Robin Hsu
Public bug reported:

Reproduce steps:
1. launch a terminal
2. Type in 'gnome-tweak-tool' command
3. mouse click on "Keyboard and Mouse" -> "mouse: Show location of pointer"
turning ON
4. close gnome-tweak-tool.
5. open Remmina Remote Desktop Client or VNC Viewer, and link to a remote
windows machine.
(On my machine, I launch vnc viewer as:
  /usr/lib/ssvnc/vncviewer -passwd .vnc/passwd 192.168.x.x)

6. Launch a notepad on the remote windows machine. Type something, use
mouse drag-and-drop to select a word, and then type control-c (copy).
It will just send 'c' rather than control-c. Thus you will see the
whole word is replace by a single 'c'.

7. close remote connection. Turn "mouse: Show location of pointer" OFF,
and do it again. This time, the copy action should work.

Note: The bug affects the control key. Thus control-c (copy) action is
just one example. Other examples include control-x (cut), and control-v
(paste).

2019-02-18 Thread Robin Sheat
I'm away from my computer right now, but in case it's useful:

It happens after first login after boot, but not always. This said, I
did about four reboots today and it happened on every one. In the past
it would happen sometimes. There's not enough info there to be
statistical however, beyond it happening often. It doesn't seem to
happen on logout then login. Suspend/resume seems to have no impact.

I'll check out the extensions thing tomorrow, but from memory I only
have one that adds a WiFi scanning button. Is there an easy place to see
what extensions are installed?

[Bug 132002] Re: libportaudio packaging very confusing

2019-01-02 Thread Robin
As suggested in #3 above, this solution may work:

The clean solution to this issue is to install libjack-jackd2-dev
*before* installing portaudio19-dev.

I have a note on this, available on request.

Excellent, glad to hear it's fixed, cheers for notifying of the change.
I'm using 18.04; I assume the patch will be backported to that version, given
that it is supported for some years yet and given that a memory leak sounds
like a security issue?

[Bug 1798561] [NEW] sslscan fails to detect most ciphers

2018-10-18 Thread Robin
Public bug reported:

The version of sslscan that's been packaged uses the system version of
OpenSSL, which has removed support for most of the weak and legacy SSL
ciphers. This means that it will fail to detect:

* RC4 ciphers
* Anonymous ciphers
* Null ciphers
* Most weak CBC ciphers
* Weak DHE keys
* Probably others
* SSLv3
* SSLv2

This means that it's giving extremely misleading results, and the
impression that the scanned systems are secure, even if they have all
the weak ciphers and protocols enabled.

sslscan has had an option for a number of years to be statically
compiled against a version of OpenSSL that includes support for all
these, allowing it to detect them (with `make static`), so with the
current state of OpenSSL in Ubuntu, the statically build version needs
to be packaged instead.

If packaging the static build isn't possible (I'm not sure what Ubuntu's
policies are on this), then sslscan should be removed from the
repository, because it's giving totally false information at the moment.

[Bug 1752772] Re: r8169 ethernet card don't work after returning from suspension

2018-08-26 Thread Robin Bettridge
Peter Smith - I had the same experience of trying the 4.15.0-33 and it not
working for me.
** Try 4.15.0.23 if you would like to be on the 4.15 kernel **

Background:
In my case I am running Mint, but same Ubuntu kernels. It is a desktop PC which
is not often suspended so I noticed the problem only a couple of days ago, when
already on 4.15.0-30, so tried the 4.15.0-33 which Mint's update manager was
offering.. no improvement. The modprobe trick worked and I have a Realtec NIC.

I had seen references to 4.13.0-31 working and also 4.15.0-20, both of
which worked for me.

I worked my way up through the following:-
4.15.0-20 resumes
4.15.0-22 resumes
4.15.0-23 resumes
4.15.0-24 does not resume
4.15.0-30 does not resume
4.15.0-33 does not resume
The modprobe treatment worked for the recent -30 and -33, but curiously not on
-24. That's probably a symptom of progress.

I thought I experienced a surprising result of going to -24 then back to -23
and the problem reappearing in -23. After a power-off restart all was well
again. I had a theory that maybe since all I was doing were OS "restarts"
without the PC shutting down the hardware might be holding some state.
I've tried recreating that problem (because it seemed such a dodgy assertion) -
but without luck. On the one hand it might be a valid thought that it is very
easy to just do restarts between kernels and actually still be holding some
unfortunate state in the hardware - OR my bad in accidentally booting the wrong
kernel (I've mostly done a uname -a check straight after the boot)

There do seem to have been some inconsistencies in people's experiences, so I
wonder if hardware state can be a factor, after all, we are in the area of
suspended motherboard h/w
People who know more about Linux initial initialisation of hardware may say I'm
talking bo***cks!

Anyway, I'm happy with suspend/resume with 4.15.0-23-generic

[Bug 1739310] Re: Sound crackling in Ubuntu 16.04

2018-06-25 Thread Robin Preiss
I have the same issue on Xubuntu 18.04 and Debian Stretch. It occurs on
a fresh install while watching a video in Firefox. Restarting Pulseaudio
does fix the issue for me as well.

I observed that when the problem occurs, I can see multiple instances of
speech-dispatcher in Pavucontrol. Whenever I select a different output
device for all of them, the crackling disappears. If one of them has the
same output device selected as Firefox, the crackling comes back.

I could fix the issue by uncommenting the last line (DisableAutoSpawn)
in /etc/speech-dispatcher/speechd.conf.

I hope it might help.

[Bug 1767469] Re: Failed to connect to local LXD

2018-05-21 Thread Robin Winslow
I found it rather surprising that you need to be in the LXD group to run
this initial configuration command - with sudo.

Is there a good reason why it needs to be the case? Could we at least
add some messaging prompting the user to add themselves to the lxd
group?

[Bug 1755835] Re: No PIN options in Mate Dock when used in custom layout

2018-03-20 Thread Robin Thompson via ubuntu-bugs
Thanks for the info.

I've managed to reproduce the problem. It seems to occur only when the
Mutiny layout is selected and then, without changing any of the dock
settings (e.g. pinning or unpinning apps), the layout is changed and the
dock added to another panel. The settings from Mutiny are not carried
forward to the new dock...

Since this is affecting more than one person and is obviously causing
confusion I've produced a workaround for this, and it'll be released
shortly.

It works as follows:

if you've previously configured a non-Mutiny dock, switched to the
Mutiny layout, switched away without changing any dock settings and then
added the dock to another panel, you'll get the old pre-Mutiny dock
back, which is probably what you'd want.

if you've never run the dock before, or you have but changed any of
the Mutiny dock settings, these settings will be retained if you change
layout and use the dock again.

2018-03-19 Thread Robin Thompson via ubuntu-bugs
Hi, I'm the author of the dock applet.

Quick question, is the pin option completely missing - i.e. if there is
no pin option in the applet right click menu, what happens when the
mouse pointer hovers over an app icon in the dock ?

[Bug 1756811] [NEW] gnome-shell uses too much memory

2018-03-19 Thread Robin Sheat
Public bug reported:

After running for a few weeks, gnome-shell is using more memory than is
reasonable:

I would really like to know what needs to be done to fix this. I get the
same on every install and updates are quite tedious waiting for it to
time out on IPv6 addresses.

[Bug 1735944] [NEW] cannot route IPv6 addresses

2017-12-02 Thread Robin Hall
Public bug reported:

I have install Ubuntu 17.10 64 bit server and set a static IP address as
well as an IPv6 address. I have also tried using DHCP6 as well. I can
ping locally any address on the same VLAN. I cannot ping outside of the
local addresses. This is a new install on a Dell R710 running ESXi. I
have other servers that have no problem routing, this is the only server
using netplan. I have tried adding a static route, setting gateway6: and
neither works.

[Bug 1563887] Re: qemu-system-ppc64 freezes on starting image on ppc64le

2017-11-10 Thread Robin H. Johnson
TL;DR: pass '-vga none' with -nographic, or redirect the screen
somewhere!

I ended up digging into this after it was mentioned by smoser. The bug
is invalid because of a bad assumption in the QEMU inputs. smoser's
workaround of usb=off removes USB as a workaround.

The kernel, OpenFirmware, and QEMU are behaving correctly, but the
original command-line hides the screen output.

If you have both a supported* keyboard AND screen, then OpenFirmware/SLOF sets
OF stdout to be the screen.
This causes the OF output of 'No console specified using screen & keyboard'

If you are missing either a keyboard OR screen, then OF sets stdout to be
hvterm (serial).
This causes the OF output of 'No console specified using hvterm'

https://git.qemu.org/?p=SLOF.git;a=blob;f=board-
qemu/slof/OF.fs;h=4e04b840d5e6ff6c39191939e1a4f70f3d169d5d;hb=HEAD#l215

Which devices are available depends on the QEMU commandline...
Base QEMU defaults to '-vga std'.
QEMU '-machine pseries' defaults to enabling USB.

Re supported keyboards: The OpenFirmware/SLOF only seems to support USB
keyboards at this time (virtio keyboard not supported).

[Bug 1545800] Re: nemo crashed with SIGSEGV in on_menu_destroyed()

2017-09-27 Thread robin
This will not be fixed upstream, authors are not interested and have
moved to v3.4

https://github.com/linuxmint/nemo/issues/941

It is not supported by Canonical, so perhaps time to move to a later
version.

[Bug 1716471] [NEW] Ubuntu package version 8.0.x in Artful lags behind Debian Stable at 8.5.x

2017-09-11 Thread Robin Miller
Public bug reported:

Tomcat 8.0.x is slated for EOL in June, and Debian's tomcat8 packages
have already been on Tomcat 8.5.x for a while (it's in both their stable
release (stretch) and in backports for the previous stable release
(jessie-backports)). However, on the Ubuntu side, even the upcoming
Ubuntu Artful tomcat8 package is still on version 8.0.38.

It seems like Ubuntu should be keeping up here and be including Tomcat
8.5.x in the upcoming release.

[Bug 1397142] Re: Bluetooth headset play/pause key not fully effective in various media players

2017-09-08 Thread Robin Sheat
For my case, with Bose QC35 bluetooth headphones, skip forward and
backward worked with no configuration, but play/pause didn't at all.

The workaround I found was to use xbindkeys with the help of xbindkeys-
config to set the following:

"xdotool key XF86AudioPlay"
c:208

in my ~/.xbindkeysrc. This is strange, as pretty much everything else
sees the button as XF86AudioPlay, but it wasn't being seen as a media
key by the player. But it works now.

[Bug 1559249] Re: Dropbox indicator is broken on non-Unity environments

2017-07-28 Thread Robin
A fresh bug report has been raised, emphasising the problem for no-Unity
desktops.

It would be helpful to sign up to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus-dropbox/+bug/1707313

Please note that the new bug report does not include any mention of a
"fix".

[Bug 1707313] [NEW] Dropbox indicator remains broken on non-Unity environments, in spite of "fix"

2017-07-28 Thread Robin
Public bug reported:

The Dropbox indicator is broken with Desktop environments that are not
unity. The fix attempted that is associated with
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus-dropbox/+bug/1559249
does not resolve the problem on non-Unity environments.

With Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, in Gnome Flashback, Dropbox indicator is expected
to display various options and information when selected. Instead, it
displays a narrow black column with no text.

(With Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, the indicator applet in Gnome Flashback behaves
as expected.)

[Bug 1559249] Re: Dropbox indicator is broken on non-Unity environments

2017-07-28 Thread Robin
This is frustrating. The patch *does not work*, yet the status is
currently "Fix Released". Should a new bug be raised, or should the
status be reverted to "Confirmed"?

The non-working status for the proposed fix is noted in comments 10-17.

[Bug 1681513] Re: Ubuntu 17.04/17.10: New feature in NetworkManager stops several WiFi adapters from working (MAC Address Randomization issue)

2017-07-07 Thread Robin King
Many, many thanks, Jesse, for the fix! I have been using an ASUS N-13
adaptor, and up to Ubuntu 17.04 had no trouble. At first I suspected the
adaptor and bought another one - quite unnecessarily as it turns out.
Fortunately I had my little old friend, an ASUS Eee (also running Ubuntu
17.04), to help me, and so I was able to use it to ferret about, finally
ending up at your posting. It worked! Evidently - and fortunately for me
- the "improvement" to the network manager doesn't affect the Eee wifi
card.

Couldn't agree more with the above comments about the irresponsibility
of the development team in fielding such a vital piece of software
without very careful and extensive testing. Shame on you lot! There are
probably a lot of ordinary users like me out there who just don't have a
clue what is happening now their network connection isn't working.

Yes it's reproducible, it happens often when i close nemo.

I don't know the specific steps, it appears random to me (although it
probably isn't).

It happened again today.

Nemo is pretty unstable for me, there is another bug which I have reported on:

Thanks for this. Since the time of this initial report, I've changed
server. At that time, I was on a DSL (!) connection, which of course
had limited bandwidth, since fiber wasn't available at my location.
However, I have seen an occasional long hang on scp and also on ssh
since then, so the issue is perhaps still around (it was ATT in both
cases, though now it's "Uverse", which does have a known problem with
periodic drops on ssh connections, though ATT doesn't provide any help
about this).
