[Bug 369070] [NEW] screen blinking when opening "display" in preference

2009-04-28 Thread Rod
Public bug reported:

strange sync on screen when opening display preference. Display window freeze
and can not close until several seconds.
note :
- my monitor (IIyama HM204DT A) is not well reconise by ATI driver
- Can not set frequency or native resolution, 2048x1...@60h for example
- OS has founded ATI video card and installed manufactured driver instead,
maybe problems come from this ?
- My mother board is an ASUS M3A78-EM with embedded HD3200 video card.
- Ubuntu 9.04 amd64 version with all released service pack.

Many thanks, Rod

[Bug 174373] Re: [hardy] squares instead of text after fontconfig upgrade until applications are restarted

2008-09-21 Thread rod
I have something not cosmetic at all, with all the gutsy menus'texts as
squares, the only place I know that can handle still normal fonts is the
terminal.
If I launch gedit from term, it goes on showing 3 Pango-WARNINGs :
"failed to find shape engine" for script = 'latin' and script = 'common', and
"pango_cairo_font_get_scaled_font called with bad font."
So I could too expect ugly output.
It happened just after trying to install atk which seemed to be needed by
pango, when putting the commands :
"svn co http://svn.gnome.org/svn/atk/trunk atk"
"cd atk"
"./autogen.sh --prefix=/usr"
might be not exactly fontconfig-related, but still a problem that seemed to
have be encountered by some users (more than 3)...

[Bug 174373] Re: [hardy] squares instead of text after fontconfig upgrade until applications are restarted

2008-09-22 Thread rod
I solved my issue, after trying several things gathered on lots of locations,
which did not work :
I just desinstalled pango, then removed all pango-related files under
/usr/local/lib before reinstalling pango...
Let me say that I simply could not believe it !

[Bug 174373] Re: [hardy] squares instead of text after fontconfig upgrade until applications are restarted

2008-09-23 Thread rod
I did
cd /usr/local/lib
sudo rm libpango*
(to remove all files with name beginning by libpango)

cd /usr/local
sudo rm -r pango

sudo apt-get install --reinstall libpango1.0-0 libpango1.0-common
cd /home/myuser/
checked which files were with pango in the name, with
ls -a
then did
sudo rm -r pango-1.20.5

Mind that this exact sequence won't work with you if pango was not installed in
the same places.
Hope it helps,

rod

[Bug 327882] [NEW] ubuntu display vanished, firefox fills the whole screen

2009-02-10 Thread rod
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

I am new here. I kept trying to install various items and was told I
couldn't because one or more issues in the preference sections needed my
attention. I finally tried to open one of the managers and the upper
and lower gnome bars dissapeared and Firefox filled the whole screen.
When I went back to the desktop, all of the items I had place in the
upper bar had been deleted. When going through the Ubuntu menu, all
items were still there but once I opened firefox, I couldn't access the
the menu bar and the status bar at the bottom was also gone. I do not
see a minimize button on Firefox so I don't know what to do, short of
uninstalling and reinstalling the program and starting from scratch. I
am using Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid that I downloaded and installed from Wubi.
My first experience with your product. A nice change from Windows, once
I can learn how to set it up, probably use it all the time.

Hope it helps,

rod

[Bug 163042] nmbd crashes after routine Dapper upgrade

2007-11-16 Thread Rod Roark
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: samba

Running 6.06 LTS, I did a routine update/upgrade and now Samba will no
longer start. The system sends this email:

The Samba 'panic action' script, /usr/share/samba/panic-action,
was called for pid 8377 (/usr/sbin/nmbd).

Below is a backtrace for this process generated with gdb, which shows
the state of the program at the time the error occurred.

If the problem persists, you are encouraged to first install the
samba-dbg package which contains the debugging symbols for samba
binaries. Then, submit the provided information as a bug report to Ubuntu.

[Bug 163042] Re: Regression in USN 544-1 causes nmbd crash after update

2007-11-17 Thread Rod Roark
Good work Jamie. Thanks for jumping on this so quickly and getting it
resolved. I doubt a DoS vulnerability in Samba is a big deal anyway, as
it should not be normal (among Samba users at least) to expose shares to
the public Internet.

[Bug 95987] Re: existing RAID partitions not recognized by mdcfg

2007-04-03 Thread Rod Roark
Similar experiences here. I had filled a pair of 320GB SATA drives with
5 RAID 1 partitions during an Ubuntu 6.10 install (ia32), then went to
install 7.04 AMD64 Beta as an alternate boot option. When the
partitioner loaded I selected manual partitioning.

At this point it would show only the physical RAID volumes, not the md*
partitions. Selecting "Configure Software RAID" didn't seem to do
anything interesting. Then selecting "Finish" produced "Could not stat
device /dev/md/4 - No such file or directory.". That was with a plain
text install, and as I recall it was the same if I chose an Expert
install and loaded mdcfg, or if I tried to install the 32-bit beta.

[Bug 103177] Re: boot-time race condition initializing md

2007-05-06 Thread Rod Roark
I don't think this bug is fixed. I have an up-to-date Feisty/amd64
machine with 2 320G SATA drives supporting 5 RAID1 partitions, including
md0 as root. Boot (via lilo) often hangs as depicted in the attached
image. Applying the "sleep 10" fix to /usr/share/initramfs-tools/init
(and running update-initramfs -k all -u) works for me.

Seems to me this is still a critical bug.

[Bug 284596] Re: nm-applet fail when another user is logged in (intrepid)

2008-11-04 Thread Rod Hull
This is a massive bug IMO.

Now that Intrepid adds the new fast-user-switch applet as the power
button (so is essentially the default behaviour), and thus fast user
switching is now actively encouraged, it seems crazy that something
essential like a network tray icon is not available for all users at
once...

The old version of nm-applet worked FINE under Hardy when switching
users...

Correction: root is md1, not md0.
