I had this issue today on a brand new install of 10.04.1 LTS Boot up - could not mount my hard drives. Saw other issues too like could not change my account type in Users and Groups. No prompt for sudo password, just no response at all. I had the same issue. For completeness sake the full fix by Nathan should have been.
