Not to be too flip, but Kubuntu 11.04 (KDE) "looking like" ubuntu classic (gnome) has no problem saving the session. There may be other problems but that certainly is not one. A cold start showed a frozen clock on the panel. Restarting the panel with "killall gnome-panel" re-started the clock on the panel. It worked correctly last night by reinstalling gnome-panel and restarting. I am not near the machine now and will try killall this evening (Eastern time U.S.). As others my configuration files were completely wiped out in the amd64 version. Also symlink is created each time Thunderbird is started: .mozilla-thunderbird -> /home/user/.thunderbird A .thunderbird.upstream sub-directory never appeared in the home directory. This is quite bad form, even if it is a beta, since recovery seems almost impossible. Thanks. This worked. Since I had already removed "network.protocol-handler.app.mailto", editing it back in with "thunderbird" as the value, then following on with the rest solved the problem. In the process I cleaned up many other "garbage" files in .mozilla that must be from multiple earlier upgrades and updates.
