I can confirm that this issue continues to affect me on a fresh install of 11.10. I am also seeing the same thing with my dual display setup on ATI graphics using the open source driver. After the launcher crashes the machine does not shutdown, but using either Gnome's normal shutdown dialogue or sudo halt from a different tty does work.
