Why are you prying for info? If you are interested in what is going on with the right side of the window, then join the group Mark mentioned. It has been made very, very, very easy to select a different theme with the buttons on the right. I did a clean install of Lucid and all of my downloaded right-handed button themes work flawlessly and the buttons are on the right as they were designed. Though I feel the buttons belong on the left now. I have two systems side by side, both with buttons on opposing sides. [Bug 532633] Re: [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment
@Pyramid Technologies, I can agree with you on liking to see the buttons be easily movable. I have moved them back and forth and changing their order and it appears they have fixed the chopped look that once was an issue after moving them. It would be nice to see a button switcher that works with the new themes placed within the Appearance applet. With this in place the buttons could be moved from left to right easily. The next problem is people disagreeing with the order of the buttons, some seem to like the close button on the right of the other two while all are on the left, though I prefer the order they are in now. -- [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/532633 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I am not sure why they changed their minds about the search engine, though I am glad they did. Searching Yahoo for Ubuntu fixes just wasn't working well. Google loves us, so we should love them back. I did notice that when choosing themes other than Ambiance, Dust, and Radiance, the buttons are moved to the right side of the window, which should be easy to figure out for those who prefer them there. I just recently upgraded my desktop machine to Lucid and I am impressed with the work that has been done and yes I am keeping the buttons to the left. The decision to move the close button to the far left makes it easier. [Bug 532633] Re: [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment
Bob, your only reason for rejecting ubuntu's buttons is stubbornness. The fact that your grand mother was using a computer shows she is capable of change being that most likely when she was born there were no TVs much less computers. How many people were really using desktop computers in the 70s? Lets be real here. If you guys are really this stubborn how did you manage to actually leave Windows? With every release there are whiners that scream they are leaving because the sky isn't blue enough in the new desktop background. I would think someone who claims to be a system admin for a company using ubuntu as their system would know how to make the small GUI change necessary to put the buttons back on the left for his whole company at install time. If you look at the subscribe list to the above right, you will see that Mark is no longer following this thread, so why are you arguing as if you think he will change his mind? -- [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/532633 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 532633] Re: [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment
@hills You should have added the next line showing your movement to the menu to open the next window or app, which would make the travel to the close button on the right a longer wasted path. With the close button on the left you don't have to go far to open the next application. Arguments can be made to prove either way is better or worse. If everyone had used their energies to motivate Mark and his team to add an easy way to adjust the window buttons in the Appearance Applet instead trying to debunk the actual placement of the buttons, then at least and easy GUI HowTo could be made for showing those who wish to put the buttons on the left an easy way to do it. Instead we have to now either give them a full terminal command to put the buttons to the right or a command to open gconf, then walk them through making the change. I really do not see people coming to Linux or ubuntu looking to find a Windows look-a-like. -- [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/532633 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I am still amazed that people insist that a new person coming from Windows would have a problem with the button change. An person without an open mind would not leave Windows for Linux. I have been to Best Buy and I have seen people playing with Macs for the first time and I have never seen any of them say that they were not about to buy an expensive system with the buttons on the left. Mr. Pako, I am glad we seem to have the same point of view with this. I have faith that Mark and others have an innovative plan for our new button layout, but I think there will be quite a few people that just can't handle change. Way up the list there was a post about system admins wouldn't implement this release because of the button issue using productivity as an excuse. I would hope that if a system administrator thought this would have a negative impact on his/her coworkers, then he/she would have the sense to look up the fix. entering ubuntu buttons into a Google or Yahoo search will quickly bring up links to the many threads and blogs on this issue. [Bug 532633] Re: [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment
- And you have to explain how to change it to every user who's is switching from Windows to Ubuntu. That is assuming that people coming from Windows are not open minded to change, which I find to be hard to believe, being the person has actually opened up the to the opportunity for such a major change. When I came to Linux, I was prepared and wanting something totally different from Windows. I saw people posting bashing everything about Windows on the forum. Now it is most of those same people who are now complaining they want Ubuntu to look like Windows. I gladly help others on the forums and I am actually planning to start working on getting into the BT, so I can help people the best way possible. I will gladly respond to the help threads and help people put the buttons where ever they may want them. I think Mark is going out on a limb here to bring a change that will possibly make Ubuntu stand above many of the other distros that are trying to get into people's desktops. -- [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/532633 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 532633] Re: [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment
I have been testing this for a few days on my Netbook with touchpad only and I think it does take more mental effort to go after the buttons with them being on the left. I don't have Lucid on my desktop machine yet, but I have changed the buttons to match the new Lucid setup and. IMHO, it isn't a hard change when it only requires one little flick of the wrist to move the pointer to the left hand side. I realize that Mark or at least the design team may have some plans for what is going to happen on the right side and I am all for having something that is unique to Ubuntu. I think there is a lot of knee jerking happening and some people just can't handle change. If it is decided that the buttons will stay on the left, there really needs to be an easy GUI option for changing it from side to side. In the Appearance applet, if one were to click Customize, there could be a selection for left or right side button in the free space to the left of the Delete button. Just a thought that I am sure someone may have already voiced on the design team, but maybe others will agree that this could help during the next six months, until the new function can be added to the right side of the control panel. -- [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/532633 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
