[Bug 1453861] Re: upstart hangs at boot
We could reproduce the problem on a machine that was mothballed after installing 14.04 on March 12, 2015. 1) The machine still booted fine. Linux 3.13.0-48-generic #80-Ubuntu SMP Thu Mar 12 11:16:15 UTC 2015 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux 2) We updated the machine with all patches released between March 12 and today. 3) The machine still booted fine. Linux 3.13.0-52-generic #86-Ubuntu SMP Mon May 4 04:32:59 UTC 2015 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux 4) We switched from NIS to LDAP authentication. (We had implemented that sometime after the machine was mothballed.) 5) LDAP works fine. 6) Machine HANGS at reboot, just like the other affected machines. The conclusion would be that upstart gets stuck at boot because of something related to the switch to LDAP. The changes were: a) installed packages libnss-ldap:amd64 (264-2.2ubuntu4.14.04.1), auth-client-config:amd64 (0.9ubuntu1, automatic), ldap-auth-config:amd64 (0.5.3, automatic), libpam-ldap:amd64 (184-8.5ubuntu3), ldap-auth-client:amd64 (0.5.3, automatic) b) edited files: /etc/ldap.conf /etc/ldap/ldap.conf /etc/nsswitch.conf (added lines passwd_compat: ldap, group_compat: ldap. shadow_compat: ldap) In order to confirm this, we booted from CD and commented out the lines added to /etc/nsswitch.conf, to make the machine use NIS instead of LDAP again. The machine booted without any problem. At this stage, our guess is that some upstart script forces a lookup of a user ID before the network is up, such that the LDAP server can't be reached, and the init process gets stuck. For some reason, with NIS this gets handled better. Looking for a UID problem in the log files, there was only this (from a successful boot with NIS, because no logs are written when LDAP is used and the boot fails). I have no clue whether that is anyhow related to the issue. [Bug 1453861] [NEW] upstart hangs at boot
Public bug reported: We have a few machines running Ubuntu 14.04, fully patched. Reboots usually get scheduled for the weekend after a kernel update. After this weekend's reboot, most of the machines didn't come up again. We determined that upstart gets hung during the boot sequence. We tried to re-install 14.04 on one of the affected machines and managed to boot it after the install, but the machine was in no usable state because again, upstart was hung, this time apparently after the boot process. The process list was filling up with zombies that didn't get reaped, and programs got stuck when trying to connect to the upstart socket. ** Affects: upstart (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1453861 Title: upstart hangs at boot To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/upstart/+bug/1453861/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Can we declare this bug to have been fixed? [Bug 596299] Re: Decrypted partition won't mount (ext4)
I suspect this issue could be the result in changes in the behaviour of cryptsetup since the upgrade. Instead of trying to read the key-material from stdin, you could try crypsetup --key-file /mnt/usb/keys/fs. The failure to mount could simply be a sign that the filesystem hadn't been decrypted properly, and not anything to do with ext4. To confirm, you could take a look at /dev/mapper/crypto (e.g. with od), before trying to mount it. I don't think this bug is relevant to cryptmount (unless priya has some evidence to the contrary.) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/596299 Title: Decrypted partition won't mount (ext4) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cryptmount/+bug/596299/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
Re: [Bug 474258] Re: Extremely dangerous! cryptswap killed my partition
Hello Johnny, Judging by the Ubuntu bug listings at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cryptsetup/+bugs?field.status:list=NEW, it would appear that the bug has already be reassigned to cryptsetup, and it doesn't appear in the listing of bugs in cryptmount. I'm still not sure there's a particularly clean solution to this problem, and all of the ideas suggested so far against this bug seem vulnerable to quite mundane special cases (e.g. using a large swap file temporarily installed via a loopback device.) Your UUID proposal may be part of a better solution, but seems to require a change in the format of swap partitions themselves. That might involve ensuring that encrypted swap partitions always have a header in which a UUID is readable *before* decryption (as with the LUKS format). However, that could require quite widespread changes in the kernel, mkswap, etc. The (partial) solution I'm trying in 'cryptmount' is to look at the degree of randomness (entropy) of a partition before running mkswap. Only if the raw data on the partition, or its decrypted version, doesn't look totally random or totally featureless, will mkswap be allowed to run. This feature is currently part of the beta release of cryptmount-4.2. I'm hoping this will significantly reduce the risk of accidental dataloss in a way similar to the /etc/crypttab issue, even if it can't eliminate it entirely. [Bug 474258] Re: Extremely dangerous! cryptswap killed my partition
This bug report really does not sound like it refers to the cryptmount package. Specifically, cryptmount does not use the /etc/crypttab file for any purpose, nor does it include any utility called cryptswap (even though if offers similar generic functionality). More generally, it would appear that the problem is a side effect of repartitioning the main hard disk and not updating configuration files that refered to existing partitions that had been reassigned. It doesn't sound realistic for repartitioning tools to attempt to inform all applications that depend on a particular partition being available that it has been renamed. This is surely the responsibility of the system administrator. Naturally, I commiserate with the bug-submitter about the possible loss of 80GB of data. However, the proposed solution of checking partition-types before mounting as swap does not seem to offer an effective protection against corrupting data held on raw devices, especially via loopback devices which don't directly have types in the same way as disk partitions. Similar risks would seem to apply to any system-management tool which writes to raw devices. -- Extremely dangerous! cryptswap killed my partition https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/474258 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 474258] Re: Extremely dangerous! cryptswap killed my partition
As a reminder - your bug report does NOT relate to the cryptmount package given details in your original post. The problem with running swapon with an encrypted partition is simply that both the /etc/crypttab mechanisms, and those of other encryption tools, perfectly reasonably regenerate the swap partition every time the system is rebooted. This is because one usually doesn't need to preserve the contents of an encrypted swap partition, and usually doesn't want to have to enter a password before being able to use the swap partition. So it is quite appropriate for encrypted swap partitions to use a new encryption key every time the system is rebooted, and to run mkswap on each reboot. The changing of the encryption key means that it wouldn't be feasible to swapon the pre-reboot state of the partition. Furthermore, the post-reboot state of the partition will actually only be accessed indirectly by either a loopback device or a device-mapper target. Neither of those indirect devices is likely to have a well- defined partition type analogous to a real disk partition. As before, I agree that it is frustrating that there wasn't a safety net in the encryption tool you chose to use, but I don't think that's any different from mkswap or many other system-administration tools which can easily cause catastrophic damage with a single unlucky keystroke. I'd recommend that this if this issue is treated as a bug, it is re- parented to a more appropriate package. -- Extremely dangerous! cryptswap killed my partition https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/474258 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 375913] [NEW] kile embedded viewer not working after upgrade to 9.04
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: kile The embedded viewer in Kile relies on the kviewerpart.so (DVI) and libkghostviewlib.so.0 (PDF) libraries, which are not available anymore in Ubuntu 9.04. Since the embedded viewer was the default in earlier versions, upgrading to 9.04 will render Kile unusable for any technically unexperienced user. Trying to view a DVI or PDF will always terminate with an unhelpful error message (Could not find kviewerpart library or Could not find libkghostviewlib library). The very least that should be done would be to point out in the error message that the user needs to configure Kile to use an external viewer. ** Affects: kile (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- kile embedded viewer not working after upgrade to 9.04 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/375913 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

No, the code is doing something quite stupid, as I found out running it under strace (strace -f -o cfengine.log cfagent --verbose --no-splay). You can see the following in the log: 28715 execve(LANG=C, [LANG=C, /usr/bin/apt-cache, policy, arpwatch], [/* 17 vars */] unfinished ... 28639 _llseek(3, 0, unfinished ... 28715 ... execve resumed )= -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) 28639 ... _llseek resumed 0xbfaabcd0, SEEK_CUR) = -1 ESPIPE (Illegal seek) 28715 write(1, cfengine:hspc05: Couldn\'t run LA..., 37 unfinished ... [Bug 106696] Failure to auto-load dm-mod kernel module
Public bug reported: The libdevmapper package (1.02.08 in ubuntu-7.04-beta) does not auto- load the kernel dm-mod module either at system bootup, or when first used by a client application (e.g. cryptsetup, cryptmount). This means that those client applications will typically fail unless the user executes sudo modprobe dm-mod (or equivalents) beforehand. Clearly, it is far better that a common solution be implemented within the libdevmapper package rather than separately within each client of the libdevmapper library. In the debian libdevmapper package, there is an /etc/init.d/libdevmapper script which executes modprobe dm-mod at system bootup, and this seems to work perfectly as a solution (provided the kernel doesn't auto un-load the module later - which I've not noticed on kernels up to 2.6.18). Alternatively, one could perhaps patch the libdevmapper library itself to automatically execute the modprobe whenever a client application needs access to /dev/mapper/control. A third possibility might be some form of udev rule triggered on access to /dev/mapper/control. Without some form of fix to libdevmapper, usage of applications such as cryptmount, cryptsetup, dmsetup is always likely to be compromised. Fixing this is likely to fix bugs 64625, 93568, 91405, 104452. ** Affects: devmapper (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- Failure to auto-load dm-mod kernel module https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/106696 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 93568] Re: cannot initialize device-mapper
I think this is really a problem with the libdevmapper package (1.02.08) in the ubuntu-7.04-beta release which I have tried this on. The problem seems to be entirely due to the failure to load the main device-mapper kernel-module either on system boot-up or when libdevmapper is first used. The debian libdevmapper packages (1.01, 1.02) include a script in /etc/init.d which automatically modprobes dm-mod (and a few other modules). An alternative approach would be to modify libdevmapper itself to execute this modprobe itself. From my experiments on ubuntu-7.04-beta, it appears that solely executing: modprobe dm-mod (as root) is sufficient to get cryptmount working fine. Clearly this is not ideal if one wishes to use cryptmount, as intended, without becoming root. However, as an interim fix, one could add a line of the form: modprobe dm-mod || true (and perhaps modprobe dm-crypt || true as well, to be on the safe side) to either /etc/rc.local or to /etc/init.d/cryptmount (just before the line starting test -x ${CM_EXE}). Both of these should ensure that the necessary kernel modules are loaded at system startup. Provided the modules don't get automatically or manually removed, this should be sufficient to ensure that cryptmount behaves as expected. However, I must reiterate, that I believe that this bug is far better addressed through modifications to the libdevmapper package. -- cannot initialize device-mapper https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/93568 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
