[Bug 94065] Re: init: add non-destructive means to disable a job

2011-03-11 Thread sPOiDar
Would I be likely to garner any traction in nominating this for SRU,
considering the impact for server and cluster environments (and the fact
that core services like MySQL are on upstart), the majority of which
will be using LTS? Or at the very minimum, a backport? Judging from
the attitude towards this bug in the comments here, I'm not confident,
but any sysadmin will testify to the importance (necessity) of this
feature.

Because that's the scenario.

On 14/09/10 02:40, Sergey Svishchev wrote:
@sPOiDar: This missing feature is not actually required for upstart to
do its job. It is, of course, very nice to have.

Upstart is an init system - being able to control which services are
started on boot on a host is core functionality, particularly when
services like mysql are already migrated to it. This may not be very
important on your desktop machine, but in a server it's quite necessary.

In VM environments, for example, memory is a precious commodity so
running numerous extraneous processes is extremely undesirable. A more
serious example of why this is important - any cluster/HA environment
needs to have services under tight control for correct, reliable
operation. Starting them out of order, or when they're meant to be down
can lead to some quite nasty results, and a lot of manual intervention
to repair. The lack of this feature means manually hacking the scripts,
then carefully dealing with every upgrade - it's a shambles.

It's these sort of decision that make me re-evaluate whether Ubuntu has
actually matured enough for the server, or whether the strong desktop
focus obscures the view of what's important in the server space.

Only barely different symptoms (boot hasn't failed for you /yet/, but it
doesn't always fail in #590963 either), but it's the same bug -
ureadahead eats all memory, resulting it it being OOM-killed, along with
plymouthd.

I don't see any reason to clutter up the tracker with multiple reports
on this one, all that does is tax developer time. Just get Maverick
(and the associated ureadahead version) added to the other bug.

Since all we have to reference as far as the purported performance hit
is Tim Gardner's post to the mailing list about a conversation where
Andy suggested there was a hit, yet we have upstream (thanks Balbir)
saying there should be no hit, I'd suggest that either Tim or his source
for this information need to tell us what precise methodology was used
to determine that there is an impact, or this bug needs to be resolved
by enabling the option.

At the very least, someone with appropriate privileges should remove the

2010-06-08 Thread sPOiDar
Thanks for forwarding to Debian, but this won't affect Debian until they
move to greater than python-2.5. The whole surrounding chunk of code is
really quite ugly, and extremely brittle - it's likely to break again
whenever urllib2 changes in various ways in the future. Testing can be
achieved simply by pointing at any HTTPS enabled WebDAV server - doesn't
have to actually have a queue behind it. I'll try and post this
information to the upstream bug if I can work out how to use their bug

[Bug 589975] [NEW] Wizard does not honour default storage pool location

2010-06-04 Thread sPOiDar
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: virt-manager

Having changed the default storage pool location to something other than
'/var/lib/libvirt/images', the wizard ignores the pool location and
attempts to create the image in '/var/lib/libvirt/images' regardless of
pool configuration. Additionally, choosing 'Select managed or other
existing storage', followed by 'Browse', then 'New Volume' and
attempting to create an image in the default pool is impossible - the
'Finish' button remains disabled no matter what options are selected.

Creating storage via the Host Details does work, allowing it to be
selected using the wizard, but this is obviously far from intuitive and
quite convoluted.

[Bug 559582] Re: Upgrade from karmic to lucid failes with Internal Error, Could not perform immediate configuration (2) on mountall

2010-05-17 Thread sPOiDar
The do-release-upgrade script is not an option for us (and hence a
number of our clients) running high availability clusters - since
pacemaker-openais has been removed in favour of pacemaker/cluster-glue,
the do-release-upgrade kills the node in the cluster by removing
pacemaker-openais, making subsequent upgrades that rely on shared
storage brought online via the crm fail painfully. Perhaps this is a
bug against pacemaker, however it illustrates a point.

The path to achieving a successful upgrade for us and our clients would be:
- shift apt sources to lucid
- install pacemaker (fail due to this bug, and needs explicit upgrade of
libxslt1.1)
- dist-upgrade

Also, the disabling by do-release-upgrade of custom repositories that we
use to override official packages creates all sorts of headaches putting
the pieces back together post-upgrade. The 'dist-upgrade' was created
for a reason, and whilst I don't necessarily agree with the manor in
which sam.watkins proposes it, I do agree with the sentiment that
correct dependency chains are critical to a quality distribution, a
core-value if you will.

So, we hack around this force-installing dependencies, etc...

[Bug 551130] Re: infinite loop in /etc/init/mysql.conf if mysqld is not running.

2010-05-17 Thread sPOiDar
Infinite loop is bad - kills my HA clusters if there's an error, as the
service cannot be migrated away from the node with the issue. Certainly
propose re-instating the limit, as this is a regression.

[Bug 493156] Re: Please enable CONFIG_TASK_DELAY_ACCT

2010-05-17 Thread sPOiDar
Considering this has been raised 4 separate times (besides bringing into
question people's searching skills), suggests this issue ought to be re-
examined.

If necessary, the accounting can be disabled by default as per
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/532490/comments/5
so as to have no impact, except when explicitly enabled, which would
allow a common and valuable tool for administrators to be used as
intended.

[Bug 520872] [NEW] dbconfig-common: mysqldump must dump routines during upgrade, or risk data loss

2010-02-12 Thread sPOiDar
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: dbconfig-common

If an upgrade script alters or deletes a routine (FUNCTION/PROCEDURE)
during upgrade, and the current or subsequent upgrade fails, the user is
unable to recover routines using the created database backups, so the
affected routine(s) may be permanently lost/damaged, and the upgrade
permanently wedged.

This is severe, and the way to recover is for the user to have intricate
knowledge of the package, and be able to extract the affected procedure
from previous install/update scripts if available.

This should obviously be reported upstream, but I'm not sure what the
protocol is for reporting to Debian from derivative distributions.

Attached patch resolves by enabling 'routines' option for mysqldump.

[Bug 248769] Re: Incorrect screen positioning when using multiple displays (TwinView)

2009-11-11 Thread sPOiDar
No joy with current testing packages. Are there meant to be some
configuration options to deal with this? Like, an option to choose
which monitor to display on?

At least with the testing packages the position is dynamically honored
by using the force_monitor settings, but this doesn't change the screen
reservation location, and means running a script to update the position
(and perform mathematics) based on what monitors are connected.
