[Bug 1901119] Re: nvidia-340

2020-10-26 Thread sally
I followed your steps but just encountered the same errors I previously had. I
have both the kernel 5.4 and 5.8 installed, but nvidia-340 can't be installed
with the 5.8, and I am unable to login with the 5.8. I read elsewhere that
nvidia is no longer providing support for its legacy
drivers. A developer has provided patches for some of the Ubuntu's but not yet
apparently for 20.10. I also commented on
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers-340/+bug/1872950?comments=all
and other people have the same issues. I can only login each time by going
to the recovery mode for the kernel 5.4.

[Bug 1872950] Re: Nvidia 340.108 fails to install with kernels 5.5 and 5.6

2020-10-23 Thread sally
I just upgraded to Ubuntu 20.10 without realizing this problem with the
nvidia-340.108 . The upgrade failed to install this driver with the 5.8
kernel that comes with the upgrade. Fortunately, I still have the 5.4
kernel that is compatible. I have a Dell Inspiron 1400 with legacy GPU
GeForce 8400M GS. I wondered whether there is or will be a fix for the
nvidia driver to make it compatible with the 5.8 kernel in Ubuntu 20.10.
Thank you for your help.

It?? could be the open-weather extension which is causing the error.

Re: [Bug 1849055] Re: gnome-extensions fails to load after boot

2019-10-21 Thread sally
The extensions do load when I enable them.?? The problem is that after a
reboot

they are not enabled and I need to do it by hand. This does not happen
after

every reboot but occurs often enough when I start up the computer that
it's annoying.

2019-10-20 Thread sally
Public bug reported:

Most of the time when I start or restart Ubuntu-19.10 the gnome-extensions that
I have enabled fail to load. I am forced to go each time to gnome-tweaks to
re-enable these extensions which is very
frustrating. This worked fine in Ubuntu 19.04. I am using a Dell Inspiron
1420 laptop. Thank you
for any help with this.

[Bug 1591129] Re: password is frequently rejected

2016-06-13 Thread sally
Should there be a long sequence of letters and numbers after root and my
user name in /etc/shadow? I changed my password again and it seems to be
working
okay for the moment. Could a comma in my previous password have caused an
issue?
Thank you.

[Bug 1309484] Re: upgrade to ubuntu 14.04 fails

2014-04-22 Thread sally
I was able to upgrade in a haphazard way after deleting a large chunk of files
implicated in dependencies. After
an unpleasant couple of days adding back what I inadvertently deleted, ubuntu
14.04 seems to be mostly working.
Thank you for the information about ppa-purge. I hope to avoid this next
upgrade.

[Bug 1241353] [NEW] upgradeto 13.10 fails to calculate changes

2013-10-18 Thread sally
Public bug reported:

I used software updater to try to upgrade to ubuntu 13.10 and had the
following failure:

Could not calculate the upgrade

An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade.

 This can be caused by:
 * Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
 * Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
 * Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu

If none of this applies, then please report this bug using the command
'ubuntu-bug ubuntu-release-upgrader-core' in a terminal.

I have unchecked all other software sources.

[Bug 1174950] Re: login page is purple without login

2013-08-27 Thread sally
I seem to have fixed the login bug by commenting out the line: sleep 5
under the line: post-start script
in the /etc/init/lightdm.conf
file. The login now works correctly most of the time with an occasional
failure (5% of the time).

I also fixed problems with the software-center, Ubuntu one, and backup
apps by deleting .cache/sso/sso-client.log

[Bug 1175938] [NEW] Lightdm fails to display login screen

2013-05-03 Thread sally
Public bug reported:

This problem started after upgrading Ubuntu 12.10 which worked fine to Ubuntu
13.04. After booting, my Dell inspiron 1420 reaches an all purple screen
without login. Ctrl-Alt-F1 gives a purple screen with
blinking cursor and the words starting up Ctrl-Alt-F2 yields a console
terminal where I can access unity with startx. I needed
to update the Nvidia driver to 319 for startx to work.
The /var/log/lightdm/lightdm.log is the following:

I have tried reinstalling lightdm, gdm, ubuntu-desktop, and xserver-xorg as
well as editing the /etc/init/lightdm.
Occasionally one of these changes has caused the login to work once but break
on the following reboot. This
bug is similar but not identical to other reported lightdm bugs. Thank you for
your help.

[Bug 1174950] [NEW] login page is purple without login

2013-04-30 Thread sally
Public bug reported:

My computer is a Dell inspiron 1420 laptop Since upgrading to Ubuntu 13.04 I
have encountered many bugs.
Most importantly after booting up I reach an all purple page without login.
Hitting ctrl-alt-F1 reaches a page
with the words starting up and a blinking cursor. Hitting ctrl-alt-F2 gives
a desktop terminal. After installing
the latest Nvidia driver 319 I am able to use startx to access the Unity GUI.
Once there I am forced every time to
authenticate the login keyring. Many of the apps fail to open. These include
the software center, ubuntu one, and
unity-tweak. The software updater will open only after authentication and does
not load repositories. There is no
suspend option on the top rightmost menu and the shutdown option is the same as
the logout option. If I sudo startx
the menu options include suspend, hibernate, and the shutdown option is
configured correctly with a restart option.
I have followed many suggestions on ubuntu forums and ask ubuntu to try to fix
lightdm or gdm including purging and
reinstalling but to no avail. I have cleaned out excess files with the
ubuntu-tweak-janitor and there does not appear
to be a space problem. When I made a change to lightdm the first time I used
sudo lightdm service restart I was able to
reach a normal purple screen with the login included, but after that it
reverted to the buggy version without login
upon reboot. After a reboot when I use startx to reach Unity, there is user
name rather than my name on the top rightmost
menu and it is locked. After I authenticate the keyring, a few minutes later,
my name appears and the buggy menu is unlocked.
The user accounts app is also not working. I tried to add a login key to the
seahorse app but it disappeared after a reboot.
I have never had these kinds of problems with other Ubuntu upgrades.

[Bug 137527] Re: Unhelpful response when inserting encrypted DVD in default installation

2011-11-25 Thread sally-ann barbera
HI. Sorry I am not only a newbie to Ubuntu but I don't understand any of what
you're saying, not being a techo of any description. Does this mean that I can
install something to make this dvd work, or not? if so what, and how do I find
it and if not then I guess I just have to play it on the telly!
Thanks

Re: [Bug 748994] Re: suspend hibernation not working on dell 1749

2011-10-22 Thread sally
Suspend/hibernation has been fixed in the latest version of Ubuntu 11.10
on my computer Dell inspiron 1420.

From: Joseph Salisbury joseph.salisb...@canonical.com
To: julesf...@yahoo.com
Sent: Friday, October 21, 2011 1:17 PM
Subject: [Bug 748994] Re: suspend hibernation not working on dell 1749

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel?  It
will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the release
candidate kernel versus the daily build.  Once you've tested the
upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag(Only
that one tag, please leave the others). This can be done by clicking on
the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug
description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed by the mainline kernel, please add the following
tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream-KERNEL-VERSION'.  For example, if kernel
version 3.1-rc9 fixed and issue, the tag would be: 'kernel-fixed-
upstream-v3.1-rc9'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag:
'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

Thanks in advance.

[Bug 745150] Re: Budget report shows nothing spent, but there is spent money

2011-05-15 Thread Sally Kentfield
Solution found - I had not checked the budget checkbox for the account.
This step is not mentioned on the budget page of the user manual. I will
work on editing the budget pages of the user manual and submit an
updated version to you.

[Bug 745150] Re: Budget report shows nothing spent, but there is spent money

2011-05-02 Thread Sally Kentfield
Have tested on Ubuntu and Windows with example.xhb and budget appears
correctly. Therefore, I would sugegst that there is a usability issue to
do with the way that I am using the budget feature. I will investigate
further to work out the difference between the example file and my data
file to see what is different, and whether any additional details are
required in the user manual.
