[Bug 1307717] Re: multiple problems with new chromium-browser

2014-05-05 Thread semiosis
I'm having these same problems with chromium-broswer since upgrading to
trusty from saucy (kubuntu amd64).

One other thing I didnt see mentioned is that menus are all messed up.
They render weird and only a couple items are displayed, with scroll
arrows at the top bottom. This affects context menus (right click) as
well as drop-down lists on web pages, and makes web forms practically
unusable.

I've switched to the Google Chrome Dev Channel browser (google-chrome-
unstable package from google) and it works great on my kubuntu trusty.
It's a decent workaround until the chromium-browser package is working
again.

Thanks!

[Bug 1268064] Re: Remote glusterfs mounts fail during boot because network is not yet available

2014-04-24 Thread semiosis
Bruce,

Saucy has a very old version of GlusterFS. You should look into
upgrading to 3.4.3, or if you're adventurous, 3.5.0 which was just
released this week.

You should use the GlusterFS PPAs, which have packages for Saucy...

launchpad.net/~semiosis/+archive/ubuntu-glusterfs-3.5

Please join #gluster on Freenode IRC for further support.

Thanks!

Another motivation...

Samba now supports glusterfs natively through the API. If glusterfs
were in main (and glusterfs-common added to samba's build deps) this
feature would be enabled. It's already included in samba in trusty,
just not enabled during build because the glusterfs lib is missing.

[Bug 1268064] [NEW] Remote glusterfs mounts fail during boot because network is not yet available

2014-01-10 Thread semiosis
Public bug reported:

I'm the upstream package maintainer I'm filing this bug along with a
patch (merge request) for the upcoming trusty release.

Affects: Ubuntu trusty (14.04)

Problem: Upstart tries the glusterfs mounts before the network is
available during boot, and they fail.

Solution: An upstart task to block glusterfs mounts during boot until
the network is ready

Patch:

The glusterfs 3.4.1 package currently in trusty has outdated upstart
jobs. The patch I will be submitting shortly makes two changes: move
the mounting-glusterfs blocker job from glusterfs-server to glusterfs-
client; change the wait-for-state condition from glusterfs-server to
static-network-up.

Background:

When I wrote the old mount blocker, back in early 2012, remote mounts
worked fine but localhost glusterfs mounts failed because the local
glusterfs-server daemon had not started by the time the mounts were
executed. At some point since then we found that remote mounts would
also fail during boot, perhaps by better testing or maybe a change in
ubuntu since precise, I'm not sure. The new mount blocker job resolves
both problems as far as I know. I provide the official glusterfs
packages for ubuntu in PPAs (https://launchpad.net/~semiosis/+archive
/ubuntu-glusterfs-3.4 for example) and many people use those packages
and have tested the new mount blocker.

Log file showing the mount fail with the current 3.4.1 package...

[Bug 1205075] Re: mountall doesn't treat glusterfs correctly

2013-09-27 Thread semiosis
I am skeptical of this mountall diagnosis. I spoke with Paul Boven on
IRC and my diagnosis of his problem is that the mount was tried before
the glusterfs service was completely ready -- which was a known bug with
my PPA packages he uses.

I finally (last night) fixed that bug, for good as far as I can tell.
If anyone can try reproducing this bug with my latest packages I would
really appreciate your feedback.

The PPA: https://launchpad.net/~semiosis/+archive/ubuntu-
glusterfs-3.4/+packages

Furthermore, in regards to the mountall diagnosis, if that were really
the problem then I believe it would be affecting all glusterfs versions
on Ubuntu going back years, which is definitely not the case. I have
been battling mount on boot issues for as long as I have been
maintaining ubuntu packages of glusterfs (two years) and never run into
an issue with command line arguments between mountall glusterfs -- for
whatever that's worth.

Lastly, my PPA (linked above) is the official upstream distribution
channel for glusterfs ubuntu packages. I'd like to work with the distro
community to merge my changes into the universe packages. Please get in
touch with me if you have any interest in this, I'd really like to hear
from you.

Thanks!

[Bug 1012768] Re: Mounting volumes from localhost using NFS clients and the Gluster-NFS server fails at boot time

2013-09-27 Thread semiosis
I finally fixed the mount on boot bug for FUSE clients in my PPA
packages (the official upstream glusterfs packages for ubuntu). If
anyone cares to try reproducing this problem (with FUSE clients) using
my latest packages (from today) I would really appreciate your feedback.

The PPA: https://launchpad.net/~semiosis/+archive/ubuntu-
glusterfs-3.4/+packages

NFS clients would need to be blocked while glusterd and its minions get
started. See the mounting-glusterfs.conf upstart job (in my glusterfs-
client package) for an example of how to block a mount. It would need
to be modified to intercept your NFS mount. I dont know exactly how to
do that but it shouldn't be too hard. Ping me in #gluster on freenode
irc if you try have trouble.

Thanks!

[Bug 1012768] Re: Mounting volumes from localhost using NFS clients and the Gluster-NFS server fails at boot time

2013-09-27 Thread semiosis
Oh but a much bigger problem is this...

Mounting NFS from localhost is a BAD IDEA. There's a well known
deadlock condition when under heavy load. It WILL fail on you!

I can't find a link to more info but if anyone can fill in the details
please do. This is not unique to the gluster nfs server, it applies to
any nfs server and client mount of it on the same machine.

Beware.

[Bug 1012768] [NEW] Mounting volumes from localhost using NFS clients and the Gluster-NFS server fails at boot time

2012-06-13 Thread semiosis
Public bug reported:

GlusterFS provides it's own NFS server which exports glusterfs volumes.

If an NFS client is used to mount a localhost glusterfs volume at boot
time it's likely that the mount will be executed in fstab before the
gluster-nfs server is ready.

There was a similar issue when using the glusterfs FUSE client (mount
type glusterfs) which I fixed by adding a wait-for-state task to
upstart.

Something similar is needed for NFS mount types as well.

[Bug 876639] Re: gluster-NFS server does not work 'volume start' command reports unsuccessful

2012-01-13 Thread semiosis
This is fixed in version 3.2.4 and later so it's not a problem in
Precise which will include glusterfs 3.2.5.

[Bug 901758] [NEW] Mixed Java command versions after installing openjdk-7-jdk

2011-12-08 Thread semiosis
Public bug reported:

On a new Oneiric i386 machine I ran 'apt-get install openjdk-7-jdk'.
This machine had no Java installed previously. Installing this package
required installing openjdk-6-jdk, as well as the -jre for both versions
6 7. After the install was complete I was left with this awful
result...

# java -version
java version 1.6.0_23
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea6 1.11pre) (6b23~pre11-0ubuntu1.11.10)
OpenJDK Client VM (build 20.0-b11, mixed mode, sharing)

# javac -version
javac 1.7.0_147

Thats right, my javac command uses JDK7 but my java command uses JRE6.

Looking in /etc/alternatives for symlinks to Java-related executables, i
see 13 links to Java6 programs, and 28 links to Java7 programs.

Here is the alternatives information for 'java' command

# update-alternatives --display java
java - auto mode
  link currently points to /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk/jre/bin/java
/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk/jre/bin/java - priority 1061
  slave java.1.gz: /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk/jre/man/man1/java.1.gz
/usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk-i386/jre/bin/java - priority 1051
  slave java.1.gz: /usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk-i386/jre/man/man1/java.1.gz
Current 'best' version is '/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk/jre/bin/java'.

And the same for the 'javac' command

# update-alternatives --display javac
javac - auto mode
  link currently points to /usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk-i386/bin/javac
/usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk-i386/bin/javac - priority 1051
  slave javac.1.gz: /usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk-i386/man/man1/javac.1.gz
Current 'best' version is '/usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk-i386/bin/javac'.

[Bug 876639] [NEW] gluster-NFS server does not work 'volume start' command reports unsuccessful

2011-10-17 Thread semiosis
Public bug reported:

When glusterfs-server package is installed without glusterfs-client, the
gluster-NFS server feature does not work (because it requires the
glusterfs client executable.) This also causes the 'gluster volume
start' command to print a warning that starting volume was unsuccessful.
Despite the warning, the volume is started for glusterfs native FUSE
clients only.

To reproduce:
apt-get install glusterfs-server
gluster volume create test eth0-IP:/var/tmp
gluster volume start test

the 'gluster volume start' command prints an unsuccessful warning...

then 'gluster volume info' will report status: started, and 'ps ax |
grep gluster' shows a brick export glusterfsd process but no gluster-
NFS server process.

Solution:

Make package glusterfs-server depend on glusterfs-client.

[Bug 876648] [NEW] Unable to mount local glusterfs volume at boot

2011-10-17 Thread semiosis
Public bug reported:

Mounting glusterfs volumes from localhost in fstab does not work because
the mounts are started before the glusterfs-server daemon.

The problem is that upstart runs mountall before it runs the /etc/rc2.d
/S20glusterfs-server initscript, so when the mount is tried it fails
because there is not yet any glusterfs-server running on localhost.

To reproduce (as root):

apt-get install glusterfs-server glusterfs-client
gluster volume create test eth0-IP:/var/tmp
gluster volume start test
mkdir /media/test
echo localhost:test /media/test glusterfs defaults 0 0 /etc/fstab
shutdown -r now

After rebooting, the new volume will not be mounted. However, once the
system has started and glusterfs-server daemon is running, doing a
'mount -a' will work to mount the volume (confirming that the volume
fstab config are correct.)

Solution:

The solution is to replace the glusterfs-server initscript with a proper
upstart job which will start the glusterfs-server daemon before the
glusterfs mounts are tried by mountall. I have contributed the
necessary upstart job upstream to the glusterfs project and it is
included in the development source tree under
extras/Ubuntu/glusterd.conf.

https://github.com/gluster/glusterfs/blob/master/extras/Ubuntu/glusterd.conf

To include this file in the glusterfs-server binary package, remove the
debian/glusterfs-server.init file from the source package and add that
upstart job to it as debian/glusterfs-server.upstart.

[Bug 819044] Re: puppet in natty can't enable services

2011-09-13 Thread semiosis
While the enable line does not work in natty, the -f remove line
sure does, so the end result is that enable = true has the effect of
DISABLING the service. this is a horrible problem!

[Bug 766534] Re: Regression on maverick when updating to 0.6.7 (security upload)

2011-04-19 Thread semiosis
Glad to see this is actively being worked on.

I use cloudinit cloud-config to bootstrap puppet in EC2, and this bug
completely breaks the automatic bootstrap process for new instances.

Even without the fancy cloud-config/puppet stuff, new maverick instances
can't be upgraded. If they are, then dpkg is left in a bad state
preventing any other packages from being installed.

Thank you for the urgent response to this critical issue.
