[Bug 236324] Re: mozplugger doesn't swallow windows on x86_64

2008-07-27 Thread Shane
I don't know what the behaviour is supposed to be for other document
types, but if RTFs and the like are supposed to be swallowed in an
OpenOffice window (which would be my understanding from the config
file), that doesn't happen. So I don't think this is specific to PDFs.

[Bug 241744] [NEW] No support for "+" entries

2008-06-20 Thread shane
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: adduser

adduser doesn't have any support for "+" entries. Per Debian policy,
programs (in this case the nis.deb) that aren't the primary
responsibility of the config files (in this case /etc/passwd,
/etc/shadow, and /etc/group), are to be offered a program that modifies
these entries. Adduser does these modifications, however, it doesn't
support the "+" entries for NIS users.

For the Debian how-to of NIS, see
http://lyre.mit.edu/~powell/debian-howto/nis.html
For the pertinent Debian Policy, see
http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-files.html#s10.7.4

The desired effect would be that one can use adduser to create an entry
such as the following:

/etc/passwd
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
+goodguy:/home/goodguy:
-badguy::
+test::/usr/bin/zsh

Currently, the adduser and useradd programs will fail stating that the
username has bad characters in it and will even suggest that the
preceeding "-" in name is a bad thing, even though it's required when
running NIS w/ compat.

[Bug 190754] Re: Bad multitasking / responsiveness in Hardy

2008-03-12 Thread Shane
Probably of no use to anybody, but this happens to me when playing in
Quod Libet and alt-tabbing, etc.

I'm have an Athlon64 3000+ (1.8GHz), 1GB of RAM and an Nvidia 6800 GS
(512MB).

While I don't know what graphics cards the laptops mentioned here have,
it seems to me that everyone that has listed a graphics card seems to
have an Nvidia card? Could this somehow be a problem with Nvidia's
proprietary graphics drivers? (which of course would make it very
difficult for Ubuntu to fix)

I'm using the Adobe plugin... I don't know what it uses, but there's

[Bug 976067] Re: Missing album art

2012-04-28 Thread shane
As said, this shows album art for stuff that has been played, which
isn't really a fix as far as I see since it should at the very least
have the same functionality as the previous release.

I don't know about other people but speaking personally, I don't make a
point of playing every album in my collection after installation so only
a fraction of the stuff listed in the music lens currently has the album
art (after updating from proposed) so it looks messy and very unpolished
seeing the odd bit of album art then loads of generic mimetype icons.

Shouldn't this have been looked at more carefully when the decision was made to
switch from banshee to rhythmbox?
Of course it isn't the end of the world and it has no major impact on the
system itself but the dash is a major part of unity and the music lens has been
in there for a full release so users should expect it to work like it did,
rather than regress.

[Bug 873541] Re: misaligned close, minimize and maximize

2012-04-12 Thread shane
The buttons have always been there and always looked out of place with the
launcher always showing.
The most sensible way of dealing with it would be to have the launcher reaching
the top of the screen and the top panel beginning next to the launcher.

Of course that raises the problem of things looking strange with the launcher
set to autohide.
Only thing I can think of for that is to have the buttons and top panel slide
across with an animation as the launcher shows.
I'm sure that would raise headaches in itself though.

I say the best solution would be to have a large dash icon in the
corner, in a "pizza" or quarter circle shape with the panel and launcher
growing from it, which would also put more emphasis on the dash button
itself.

Of course I doubt this would ever happen so needs some sort of solution to deal
with the current button placement.
It does look terribly ugly.

[Bug 981406] [NEW] Bottom part of Shotwell window missing

2012-04-14 Thread shane
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 12.04 fully up-to-date.

Shotwell version: 0.12.2-0ubuntu2, installed by default, not from PPA

When opening Shotwell maximized, the bottom area of the window, just below the
photo/preview area is missing.
The status bar itself is not there which also extends the full width of the
window so the photo information sidebar section is also cut off at the bottom.

I have attached a screenshot highlighting the exact problem.

This ONLY occurs when the window is maximized and when using compiz-based Unity
"3D".
If I un-maximize the window, it appears fully and normally. If I close the
window then open it in it's un-maximized state, it opens normally.
Also, if I launch Shotwell maximized in Unity "2D", it displays normally.

[Bug 733349] Re: Minimize Application's Windows upon clicking its Launcher Icon

2012-03-21 Thread shane
Although it is expected behaviour in a sense that it is what many people
are used to, I'm not sure that really makes it the correct or natural
behaviour.

I am appreciating many changes in Unity because I find them natural, even if it
is not how I am used to doing things.
I see that as an improvement.

I cannot think of a single case when using Unity that I have wanted to or
needed to minimize via the launcher, even though it is what I am used to.
The minimize button is on the left so wherever the window is, I don't see that
it involves any more mouse movement than moving to the launcher, in fact
probably less in most cases.

If an expected behaviour is also the most natural, logical and obvious
behaviour, then removing that behaviour may well cause confusion.
If an expected behaviour is simply "expected" or "used to" then I'm not sure
that is a good enough reason to include the behaviour.

so it bypasses the menubar widget and then doesn't crash at all.
Without the menuproxy flag, it crashes frequently on close again.
Has also happened with other GTK apps (Cheese and Thunderbird)

[Bug 1165938] Re: Marvell 88W8797 (Surface Pro) wifi does not work

2013-05-03 Thread Shane
You'll need to compile the kernel yourself to apply that patch. All it
does is comment out p2p and uap so they won't start up, so unfortunately
even if it seems to solve the issue for us on the Surface it's not a
real solution to the problem. I'll give it a try when I can and get
back with the results.

[Bug 1165938] Re: Marvell 88W8797 (Surface Pro) wifi does not work

2013-05-05 Thread Shane
I recompiled the mwifiex driver using the patch linked at
http://askubuntu.com/a/262010/88546 (the one that comments out uap and
p2p) and can confirm that it does indeed fix the problem. I had to
reboot twice after copying over the new kernel objects - first shutdown
after loading them had a hang, and first reboot following that they
didn't work. After this everything seemed fine though.

The process for doing this is fairly simple but will need to be done
every time the kernel is updated (though I'm guessing there is some way
around this). It would be great if someone with more knowledge could
try and debug exactly why there is this error in the driver and suggest
a fix that doesn't comment things out. I'll try and look around a bit
myself, but don't have any real knowledge of drivers.

I basically followed the guide here:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/191538/how-do-i-compile-just-wireless-
drivers-in-kernel. You will need to install the linux-source for your
current kernel version as well. Make sure you've blacklisted mwifiex
and mwifiex_usb before doing this. You can test if they are working by
doing sudo insmod mwifiex.ko (once you've built it) and then sudo insmod
mwifiex_usb.ko (these referring to the built versions). If everything
looks good to go, copy all of the built .ko files into
/lib/modules/kernel/your_cool_kernel_version/drivers/net/wireless/mwifiex.

I'll post a more detailed guide on one of the askubuntu threads and post
a link to it later.

[Bug 84242]

2014-05-28 Thread Shane
Thanks for the link, Saurabh, but I don't think it would fix this
particular issue as the user isn't brought to a Firefox error page, but
one created by the proxy server. To fix this bug, the browser must know
in advance that it isn't a proper URL (i.e., doesn't end in ".com" or
any other TLD, etc.) and that it should go ahead and send it to the
default search engine instead of the proxy server, just the way it does
with multi-word searches.

The problem seems to be that Firefox is just assuming that any single
word typed into the Address Bar is a URL to be sent to the proxy,
instead of checking it first.

[Bug 1165938] Re: Marvell 88W8797 (Surface Pro) wifi does not work

2013-05-07 Thread Shane
Well unfortunately it doesn't seem to be a perfect fix! After a day of
it working fine linux is now crashing shortly after bootup with some
debug message related to the wireless. I haven't had time to
investigate yet. If you go ahead and try things out I would suggest not
overwriting the old drivers with the new ones and instead loading them
manually with insmod as needed.

This weekend or maybe earlier I'll try and put some time into actually
trying to debug this a bit.

[Bug 1177551] [NEW] kio-tmp causes dolphin slowness

2013-05-07 Thread shane
Public bug reported:

$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 13.04
Release:13.04

$ apt-cache policy kio-mtp

 *** 0+git20130315-0ubuntu1 0
500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ raring/universe amd64 Packages

What I expected to happen:
I expect dolphin to open quickly and right-click menu to open instantly.

What happens instead:
Dolphin takes several seconds to start and right-click menu takes a further few
seconds to open.

Using apt-get to remove kio-mtp results in dolphin opening instantly and
right-click menu opening instantly.
Re-installing the kio-mtp package brings back the slow start and right-click
menu.

[Bug 1165938] Re: 1286:2044 [Microsoft Surface Pro] Marvell 88W8797 wifi does not work

2013-08-27 Thread Shane
So I've noticed that the patch that was applied via Bug #1212720 is the
same one that I tried compiling myself a while back. While it seems to
sort of work, I'm still getting problems connecting to networks,
especially secure networks. Sometimes I can connect, sometimes I can't,
and sometimes I'll have to restart because the wifi will completely lock
up.

Anyone else getting this issue? I'm using the 3.11 kernel Brandon has
linked on his guide right now.

[Bug 981406] Re: Bottom part of Shotwell window missing

And the fact it only happens in unity 3D and not 2D would suggest the same.
It is quite disappointing to still see this issue in the default photo app 2
months after release.

[Bug 891575] Re: Launcher - launcher should have blurred background all the time

2012-06-23 Thread shane
It says fix released in ayatana-design. What does this mean exactly?
Does it mean this WILL be implemented in Unity and if so, when would such a fix
trickle into an actual ubuntu release?

[Bug 1165938] [NEW] Marvell 88W8797 (Surface Pro) wifi does not work

2013-04-07 Thread Shane
Public bug reported:

The wifi/bluetooth chip that the MS Surface Pro uses, a Marvell avastar
88W8797, does not work properly under Ubuntu 12.10 or 13.04. On 13.04,
it will be reported three times in the network manager and any attempt
to connect to any network will fail, regardless of the settings of the
network. Additionally attempting to connect to any of the three listed
connections will cause the system to hang on shutdown, as well as any
attempt to read the state of the network.

Some of the errors during shutdown that I have noticed:
Bluetooth: hci0 command 0x0c24 tx timeout
Bluetooth: hci0 command 0x0c52 tx timeout

A workaround has been posted for 12.10, but does not seem to work
properly under 13.04: http://askubuntu.com/questions/257600/marvells-
wireless-driver-not-recognized. The workaround is not an ideal way of
interfacing with wifi networks.

[Bug 1165938] Re: Marvell 88W8797 (Surface Pro) wifi does not work

2013-04-08 Thread Shane
Tested on 3.9 rc6 and issue still exists. The apport-collect
information is not from the upstream kernel - it doesn't seem to want to
overwrite that information.

** Description changed:

Relavent discussions that may be of some use:

[Bug 1058809] [NEW] Cannot integrate webapps

2012-09-29 Thread shane
Public bug reported:

Most of the listed webapp sites aren't working for me.
Some give the notification that they want to integrate into unity (lastfm
gmail, grooveshark and a few other). Upon clicking install, I get a password
prompt to install but nothing happens. No icon is added to the launcher and
nothing is integrated but they are listed as installed in synaptic.

Some give the notification and do appear to install (BBC News,
OMGubuntu!), they add an icon to the launcher but after closing firefox,
the launcher icon disappears and intermittently returns.

The rest give no notification offering integration at all (Youtube,
facebook, google calendar).

I have tested on a fully updated beta 1 install which has been used daily and
on a fresh beta 2 install with identical results.
I have also tested on chromium installed from the default repo, again with
identical results.

[Bug 930148] Re: Dodge windows is down but what about making the launcher autohide only on maximised apps ?

2012-03-05 Thread shane
@ Mark

Although the comments on the mailing list do make sense, most of the
decision seems based on initial exposure to dodge windows and although
it could well be confusing to some people could this whole situation
have been solved by having big shiny visual clues on screen the first
time such things are encountered? Just like Android 4? Adds a bit of
bling-bling to impress new users at the same time :)

I am another of those who prefer to have dodge windows, mainly because I find
autohide fiddly with a touchpad and needs too much pressure by default.
I find I mostly use the launcher when the desktop is empty so hence the
usefulness of dodge. I cannot use the launcher in always show mode simply
because I mostly use maximized windows and I just cannot take my eyes off the
ugly top left corner of the screen where everything meets.
The way the menubar overhangs the window at the top of the launcher. Just ugly
and weird.

[Bug 930148] Re: Dodge windows is down but what about making the launcher autohide only on maximised apps ?

2012-03-05 Thread shane
@ zzecool

Yes I know I can change the pressure but I shouldn't really have to install an
app AND change an option to do it.
When running 11.10, I have no such pressure problems when using dodge and the
launcher was off-screen.

The removal of dodge itself is not really that big an issue, it's more of an
annoyance and inconvenience that I am FORCED to change a preference without
being able to change it back.
The problem for me is the whole pressure/reveal behaviour but that's another
matter for another time really.

[Bug 930148] Re: Dodge windows is down but what about making the launcher autohide only on maximised apps ?

2012-03-06 Thread shane
Even with dodge windows gone, I still think the original question
regarding hiding the launcher for maximized window is valid.

As I said in a previous statement, a simple visual cue would solve any
confusion.

So a new user logs in to their desktop, opens a few apps, clicks on the dash
etc... So far so good.
A user then maximizes and window and *poof* where's the launcher gone?
Confused!

So how about a new user logs in to their desktop, opens a few apps, clicks on
the dash etc... So far so good.
A user then maximizes a window and before the launcher vanishes a small box
pops up with an arrow pointing to the launcher, maybe in the style of the
quicklist menus, with a simple message:

"When you maximize a an application, the launcher will move out of the way for
you, giving you more space to work".
Obviously the wording could be much improved but it would let the new user know
exactly what is happening the first time they see it, without changing the
behaviour people have become used to.

Aren't those who were new users with 11.10 going to be confused or annoyed when
they upgrade to the new version and find behaviour they were used to has
suddenly vanished and they don't know why?
I'm sure they aren't going to think of searching mailing lists for the reason
and so there will be another wave of complaints and discussions on this issue
which is likely to continue for some time.

Dodge windows is gone, yes but this report is about the possibility of
autohiding the launcher for maximized windows only.
That surely wouldn't need the return of dodge and all it's code?

2012-03-06 Thread shane
Without wanting to sound inflammatory (it certainly isn't meant to), I would be
interested to know why the feedback of a handful of individuals who are
unfamiliar with unity seems more valuable than that of the 90+ people who have
marked themselves affected by this bug (as some people clearly consider it)?
I am not devaluing the usefulness of such testing but I would assume many, if
not all the people who have contributed to this bug have been using unity for
at least one release cycle.
These are people for whom the dodge behaviour was also new to them but they
don't seem to have been confused by it?
As I have mentioned before, plenty of users who were new last term are going to
be confused by the removal of a feature they have become used to.

Personally, I can use either behaviour. I prefer dodge/autohide for maximized
windows but I CAN live without it.
Others clearly feel much more strongly on the subject.
I would guess the 90+ people affected so far will be over 100 within a few days
and that seems like an awful lot of people to ignore.

2012-03-07 Thread shane
On point 3, I don't think any added complexities would help the matter.
Just a simple, no compromise rule. If the window isn't fully maximized, then
the launcher follows the behaviour as set in the options and that includes
tiling or anything else.

Of course even that would still require a third user option or even a
checkbox, "Hide when maximized" next to the Always show option.

The "rationale" is that the behaviour causes confusion.
After several proposals that could completely eliminate such confusion, the
rationale doesn't seem very rational.

[Bug 950415] [NEW] Chromium Browser takes several attempts to start from launcher

2012-03-08 Thread shane
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu precise (development branch)
Release:12.04

Chromium version: 17.0.963.66~r124982-0ubuntu1

Expected behaviour:

I click on the chromium browser launcher icon, the icon pulsates and
chromium browser starts up shortly afterwards.

What happens instead:
I click on the chromium browser launcher icon, the icon pulsates but chromium
browser does not start.
I click on the launcher icon a second time (after waiting for the icon to stop
pulsating) and chromium browser still does not start.
I click on the launcher icon a third time and chromium browser starts up
shortly afterwards.

Additional information:
Chromium occasionally starts up first time but this happens maybe 1 in 8-10
attempts.
If chromium fails to launch with the first attempt, it sometimes starts up the
second time but usually it takes a third attempt.
It never takes more than three attempts before finally starting.

If I try starting from a terminal, chromium usually starts normally but
will occasionally fail to start, with "Segmentation fault" the only
output.

This happens in both Unity and Unity 2D.
This problem also occurs if using chromium browser from the chromium-daily PPA.
The same versions of chromium browser launch normally in Kubuntu/KDE, not
tested in other environments.

Should point out that the output automatically added by ubuntu-bug was
sent after upgrading from the chromium-daily PPA so the information
provided is from that version, not the one in the ubuntu repositories.

If you need me to send a report again from the version in the repos I
can do that but the behaviour is the same regardless of version.

[Bug 930148] Re: Dodge windows is down but what about making the launcher autohide only on maximised apps ?

2012-03-01 Thread shane
It just seems natural to me that if the desktop is empty, then you may well be
wanting to launch an app or do some work of some kind so it makes perfect sense
for the launcher to be there, ready and waiting.
Then when you have launched your app, it moves out of the way so you can fully
concentrate and maximize the screen space.

The autohide behaviour at the moment seems pretty iffy and
unpredictable. I find the launcher takes more effort to show than it
should when I WANT it to show, yet when I overshoot the back button in
chromium and nudge the edge of the screen, the launcher shows instantly.

[Bug 930148] Re: Dodge windows is down but what about making the launcher autohide only on maximised apps ?

2012-03-31 Thread shane
Seems to me there are currently two burning issues amongst users, this and the
minimize from launcher issue.
In both cases it has driven the community to come up with their own solutions.

Does this not give a case for some sort of "unity-addons" (or extras or
extensions or something) package?

As I have said before, when oblivious 11.10 users upgrade and find the
dodge behaviour not only gone but removed altogether, there is going to
be more uproar.

The more users are ignored, the more they are going to be forced into finding
other ways of doing things.
This may lead to more 3rd party repos or PPA's which may well include badly
coded or buggy workarounds which are then going to end up here on launchpad as
bug reports.

Both the current hide for maximized windows and minimize from launcher
workarounds would require a few lines of code, is there really such a
lack of resources in this team that this couldn't be worked into unity
or as an extras package if you really want to keep unity that lean?

After all, the HUD has made it from nothing to it's current state in
just a few months and I'm sure that is more complex than hide on
maximized?

Either way, I have completely lost patience with ubuntu. I hear so much
a bout "user testing" deciding things yet almost 200 users here alone
are being completely ignored.

seem to manage it

[Bug 930148] Re: Dodge windows is down but what about making the launcher autohide only on maximised apps ?

2012-03-13 Thread shane
Regarding the subject matter of this bug report, an ubuntu forums member
has been working on the following script which enables hiding for
MAXIMIZED windows only:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=11761683&postcount=15

I have been using this script for the past few days and it works wonderfully
and I prefer it to the full-on dodge behaviour.
If this is possible with such a small and pretty simple simple, would it really
require much code to implement in unity?

Seems a good compromise to me...

[Bug 955193] Re: Menu bar - add option for the global menu to make it always visible

2012-03-16 Thread shane
Didn't "The Dictator" already say in the mailing lists that this option
will be available "in due course"?

Incidentally, I'm not sure terms such as "dictator" should be used in official
streams such as this.
Regardless of personal opinions I don't think such labels are constructive or
helpful, even if done in the hope of hitting a nerve/annoying certain people
into action (in fact I would tend to say it may have the opposite affect with
some people).

Probably best saved for the forums, or OMG Ubuntu! :)
