[Bug 1469143] Re: kpartx -d fails with image paths longer than 63 characters

2015-06-29 Thread Simo Punnonen
is the lo_name which gets stored in the loop_info structure actually
required to be an actual file path or is it enough to be an arbitrary
string identifier?

If it doesn't have to be a file path, could it be for instance a sha1
hash of the provided path? That fits into 40 chars and is relatively
fast to calculate. A sha1 identifier would make it really hard to
collide with other loop device identifiers _unless_ you pass and use the
same relative image path in two separate instances (which is also an
existing problem).

Alternatively it would be nice if the lo_name identifier wasn't actually
based on path but some unique property of the mounted file, that way you
would only need to point to an image, regardless of the path and kpartx
could find if that specific image is mounted or not.

[Bug 1469143] Re: kpartx -d fails with image paths longer than 63 characters

2015-06-29 Thread Simo Punnonen
If i understand correctly, the fix is to compare only the first 63 chars
of the path.

With kpartx the precise file path matters in resolving the correct loop
device, the suggested solution has the following consequence:

Assuming all loop devices are available, these commands succeed and
mount their respective images to /dev/loop0 and /dev/loop1

$ sudo kpartx -av
asfd1asdf2asdf3asdf4asdf5asdf6asfd7asdf8asdf9asf10asdf11asdf12asdf13/disk.img
$ sudo kpartx -av
asfd1asdf2asdf3asdf4asdf5asdf6asfd7asdf8asdf9asf10asdf11asdf12asdf14/disk.img

Now, if i issue the following command:
$ sudo kpartx -dv
asfd1asdf2asdf3asdf4asdf5asdf6asfd7asdf8asdf9asf10asdf11asdf12asdf14/disk.img

With the fix, if you only match the first 63 characters on dismount you
likely end up dismounting the wrong one (probably loop0 as it's the
first hit as the loops are iterated), as only the part of the path
exceeding 63 chars is significant.

Probably something more elegant is required to fix this problem.

[Bug 1469143] [NEW] kpartx -d fails with image paths longer than 63 characters

2015-06-26 Thread Simo Punnonen
Public bug reported:

$ apt-show-versions multipath-tools
multipath-tools:amd64/vivid 0.4.9-3ubuntu12 uptodate

Reproduce:
Mount an image from a path longer than 63 chars succeeds:
$ sudo kpartx -av
asfd1asdf2asdf3asdf4asdf5asdf6asfd7asdf8asdf9asf10asdf11asdf12asdf13/disk.img
add map loop0p1 (252:0): 0 409600 linear /dev/loop0 2048
add map loop0p2 (252:1): 0 2 linear /dev/loop0 411648
add map loop0p5 : 0 819200 linear /dev/loop0 413696
add map loop0p6 : 0 819200 linear /dev/loop0 1234944
add map loop0p7 : 0 819200 linear /dev/loop0 2056192
add map loop0p8 : 0 1316864 linear /dev/loop0 2877440

but dismounting fails:
$ sudo kpartx -dv
asfd1asdf2asdf3asdf4asdf5asdf6asfd7asdf8asdf9asf10asdf11asdf12asdf13/disk.img

strace shows that the parameter on the dismount appears to get cut at 63 chars:
ioctl(3, DM_LIST_VERSIONS, 0x15b89b0)   = 0
stat("asfd1asdf2asdf3asdf4asdf5asdf6asfd7asdf8asdf9asf10asdf11asdf12asdf13/disk.img",
 {st_mode=S_IFREG|0644, st_size=2147483648, ...}) = 0
stat("/dev/loop0", {st_mode=S_IFBLK|0660, st_rdev=makedev(7, 0), ...}) = 0
open("/dev/loop0", O_RDONLY)= 4
ioctl(4, LOOP_GET_STATUS, {number=0, offset=0, flags=0,
name="asfd1asdf2asdf3asdf4asdf5asdf6asfd7asdf8asdf9asf10asdf11asdf12a", ...}) = 0
close(4)= 0
stat("/dev/loop1", {st_mode=S_IFBLK|0660, st_rdev=makedev(7, 1), ...}) = 0
open("/dev/loop1", O_RDONLY)= 4
ioctl(4, LOOP_GET_STATUS, {number=0, offset=0, flags=0,
name="asfd1asdf2asdf3asdf4asdf5asdf6asfd7asdf8asdf9asf10asdf11asdf12a", ...}) =
-1 ENXIO (No such device or address)

if the path is 63 chars or less, the dismount also succeeds.

This is quickly becomes an issue if you want to use full disk paths in
your shell scripts.

[Bug 814222] Re: kvm cannot use vhd files over 127GB

2012-05-09 Thread simo
I came here from : http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/qemu-
devel/2011-07/msg02806.html

Actually, I experience an issue which may be useful to you.

I have a corrupted VHD file (as explained in that thread :
https://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=20614 ). I wanted to
follow that procedure to solve my issue :

qemu-img convert -O raw miimagen.vhd miimagen.bin
VBoxManage convertdd miimagen.bin miimagen.vdi

but qemu-img convert -O raw miimagen.vhd miimagen.bin triggers the qemu-img:
Could not open 'img.VHD': File too large error message.

Since, my file is 52,6 Go and the output is raw format. I guess it
should not trigger that exception? or is that the normal behavior? Is
there a way to bypass this limit? I use qemu-img 1.0 version.

Hope it can help your development (and it can help me back)
Thanks,
simon

[Bug 370173] Re: Ubuntu 9.04 laptop overheat and shutdown

2009-10-31 Thread Simo L
I upgraded to 9.10

The fan stays off and the temperature goes up to about 99C, then the fan
starts turning at max speed for 2 or 3 seconds and stops. After I check,
the temperature reads 96, and starts going up again until 99-100, the
fan turns back on for 3 seconds, and so on.

[Bug 370173] Re: Ubuntu 9.04 laptop overheat and shutdown

2009-10-07 Thread Simo L
@Gonzali
I followed the three steps in the link above (Remove, Install, Reconfigure).
Once I removed the xorg, it refuses to install. It says no such package. I
probably have to download it again, and I think that it can't be done just by
the boot console.
Thanks anyways

[Bug 370173] Re: Ubuntu 9.04 laptop overheat and shutdown

2009-10-07 Thread Simo L
Pascal,
I did what you said. When I write aticonfig --initial, it tells me that xorg is
not found.
I reinstalled XServer (with a new xorg), and when I write that command again,
it tells me : Segmentation Fault.
I then reinstalled XServer, followed steps on this page :
http://tan-com.com/posts/technology/fix-ubuntu-904-ati-driver-issue
It doesn't want to boot again. I think it's because of a damaged xorg file. I
have no backup.
When I write : dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg, it only askes about my keyboard,
no graphic pilots. So it doesn't fix it. I tried to edit the xorg file manually
with the sudo nano.. nothing.
My ubuntu still doesn't boot (it gives me a console), any ideas?
PS: My graphic card is ATI 4570.

[Bug 370173] Re: Ubuntu 9.04 laptop overheat and shutdown

2009-09-28 Thread Simo L
My laptop is less than a week old, so it should be something other than a
heatsink/thermal paste issue.
I think it's hardware related, because I have many friends running Ubuntu 9.04
on their laptop without any problems.

[Bug 370173] Re: Ubuntu 9.04 laptop overheat and shutdown

2009-09-23 Thread Simo L
I just bought a new laptop last week, Toshiba U500 with a P8600 2.1Ghz. It came
with Vista, and it had a temperature/fan monitor there. Even while running
important applications, the fan stays at 50-70% and the CPU doesn't get hot.
However, after I installed Ubuntu 9.04, the fan doesn't work. It stays off for
like 3 minutes, then turns on for 3 seconds at max speed. And keeps repeating
this pattern. That happened even during its Live CD version, and installation.
Once the computer reboots, the fan goes to max. The moment I run Ubuntu, it
stops. This is
One other thing to note is that, I tried BACKTRACK, a Slaxware based linux
distribution. The problem persists, the fan only works 3 seconds each 3 minutes
there too.

[Bug 251709] Re: rdesktop works bad with several keyboard layouts

2009-02-08 Thread Simo Melenius
I don't know, I haven't heard anything from this bug until now and I'm
not sure how the Ubuntu bug tracking process goes. This bug doesn't seem
to be assigned to anyone, however the nomination info on top points to
ktp420.

However, I would like to see the changes in the release, too. I have
since installed one new Ubuntu system and I just compiled rdesktop from
apt-get source and applied my patch manually. And then put my custom
rdesktop deb on hold to prevent an "upgrade" from the standard
distribution :-)

[Bug 251709] Re: rdesktop works bad with several keyboard layouts

2009-01-05 Thread Simo Melenius
I can confirm the regression. I became a showstopper for myself due to
StumpWM.

Here's a patch _to the patch itself_ that fixes -K by never (re)grabbing
if grabbing is disabled. Please merge.
