I should add that my system was an upgrade, using LVM with EXT4. I'm
honestly debating about backing up, blowing it up and installing fresh
without LVM, I'm not sure I see the advantage to using it.

I would love to find a work around for this other than the terminal. I
like the saved ping history since I ping the same thing quite often in

hope they get this sorted soon.

[Bug 330353] [NEW] boot-up hangs at multiple stages

2009-02-16 Thread sonicsteve
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 8.10, This was not a problem in 8.04
During the boot process, just after the orange bar appears that bounces from
side to side the system will pause. The only way I've found so far to unpause
is by pressing and holding the spacebar. If I press the spacebar and release it
will advance the boot process slightly but when I press and hold it the boot up
continues as normal.

The happened during the boot up of the 8.10 live CD also, After all
updates are done, even backports and proposed, the pause is still there.

I have a compaq presario f700 series laptop, and there are others with this
same issue, see thread;
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=967679

The common link seems to be they are all HP/compaq laptops.

To follow up with my situation,
1. I don't use FSTAB to mount network drives anymore. As long as I'm
using applications that integrate well into Gnome I'm OK.
2. This same bug will cause Nautilus to pause when connecting to Network
storage devices. I have a netgear SC101 I found software that allows it
to be used with Linux. However when connecting to the device Nautilus
will hang/pause until the netgear device has initialized out of it's
sleep mode. If the device decides to not wake up Nautilus will pause for
a very long time.

I'm running Gutsy Gibbon with all updates. This happens to me also. In
fact this has happened with all my installations of Gutsy on entirely

It seems I mis-read the bug. Are you guys saying that proper behaviour
is that a mount in /mnt is not supposed to show up on the desktop, and
nautilus? Also that /media is the only folder where a mount is supposed

place mnt vs. media? One sounds like a mount location the other for
removable devices.

[Bug 85780] Re: gThumb red eye reduction does not work

2007-12-09 Thread sonicsteve
I would like to report this also. Often in pics the eyes are orange/red. The
tool only works well with eyes that are clearly red. The tool needs to be
configurable or needs to be made so it can remove orange/red/ or whatever to
normal.
If the tool was used like a drag/selection box so you select the are of the eye
this would perhaps make the selection easier. That way the program would have a
defined area of space to change the colors.

[Bug 85780] Re: gThumb red eye reduction does not work

2007-12-09 Thread sonicsteve
That comment was perhaps a bit confusing. Really after using this tool I find
that the algorithm simply needs to be adjusted. I have found that it will only
work unless the eyes are perfectly red. If there is pink, orange, or anything
other than red, it just leaves it alone and changes the red pixels and ignores
everything else. More often than not the tool will only change a fraction of
the eye and leave the rest orange, pink or white.
My suggestion in the previous comment is just that if you can define the area
of the eye, it might make it easier for the algorithm to handle. This way it
knows that the eye has a pupil, since orange or pink is not a natural eye
colour it can change it to grey/black as a pupil should be.

Hi Leann,

I'm happy to hear from you. As far as answering you questions I can only
ask the developer of the patch. I have had some contact with him so this
won't be difficult as long as he responds to email. I must confess that
I don't really understand how the mainlines and streams work. I
understand there is a process to this and for now I must be happy
understanding that much. I wish I knew more about programming but my
strengths are elsewhere.

I'll forward this message to the developer and see if I can get some
answers.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make

It appears that the patch you referenced is not in the mainline kernel.
Do you know if there have been any efforts to get this submitted and

Ubuntu kernel team to maintain out of tree patches. As such they
require evidence of upstream submission before considering to maintain

have a few DVD's one of them being the Windows Vista DVD and they can't
be read by Ubuntu.

They mount as UDF volume with one text file in them. It seems that
something required to read them is missing. I found source forge patches
for this that supposedly correct this. I'm not a programmer or even an
advanced Linux user yet so adding this patch is still slightly beyond my
ability.

Again I don't know if this a bug or by design. The fix seems simple
though.

[Bug 134752] Re: Shutting down server causes Nautilus to slow down on Remote Ubuntu clients (SAMBA CIFS)

2007-08-30 Thread sonicsteve
It does seem to have some similarities.

Depending on what exactly is happening it may be the same.
You mentioned that the network connection is dropping. This is the same
essentially as shutting down the server, at least as far as the networking is
concerned. Either way the shares are accessible, this would cause Nautilus to
slow down/stall.
You then unmount the shares and the problem is gone.

What hardware are you using?
I'm using an asus board, K8V-mx it has a via chipset K8M800 and VT8237, with
realtek RTL8201 onboard network adapter. I've always wondered about this since
if this was a wide spread problem you would probably hear more about it in the
forum.

I haven't thought to try swapping in a different network card till now
but I just might give it a try this weekend.

[Bug 134752] Re: Shutting down server causes Nautilus to slow down on Remote Ubuntu clients (SAMBA CIFS)

2007-08-30 Thread sonicsteve
OK so I tried the new network card already. It was a 3com 905-tx. It made no
difference.
However recently I installed the Kubuntu KDE desktop on my system to see if it
would make any difference in a few areas. One are being this.
The difference it made was that Konqueror performs perfectly after shutting
down the system and Nautilus alone has this issue. Dang since I like nautilus
better.

What interesting out my test is this.
I shut down the server and tested nautilus, as soon as the shares became
unavailable nautilus had the problem.
I tried Konqueror and it was fast.
I then restarted the server, as soon as the login screen came for Ubuntu,
shares available, nautilus sprang to life again.
No unmounting, no ctrl, alt backspace to restart things. It is totally and
completely dependant on the shares being available or unavailable.
So for you if you have networking issues ie. your connection drops you would
have the same problems.

PS on a curiosity note, are you crossover cable to connect both your
computers? straight computer to computer? If so ditch that setup, buy a
cheap hub/switch and watch your connection problems disappear. If your
not setup this way I have no idea why your connection keeps dropping.

[Bug 134752] Shutting down server causes Nautilus to slow down on Remote Ubuntu clients (SAMBA CIFS)

2007-08-25 Thread sonicsteve
Public bug reported:

I have two Ubuntu systems connected in Home network
Server Ubuntu Feisty Fawn
Desktop Ubuntu Feisty Fawn

They share files using Samba and on the Desktop I have samba mounts listed in
my FSTAB using CIFS mount options.
They mount perfectly during startup and I notice no problems until I shutdown
the server.
When it is shutdown Nautilus becomes unbearably slow on the desktop until I
dismount (umount) the shares using the terminal command sudo umount (share
path).
As soon as the share mounts are dismounted nautilus returns to normal speed.

I can reproduce it over and over again.
I know this is a very rough start to a bug report, this the first one I've
reported.
