[Bug 1068662] Re: webapps are not working :(

2012-10-24 Thread spamoften
Lenovo laptop
Country : Canada
Language : English
Default browser : Firefox
Upgraded from 12.04 to 12.10

Step 1
I manually added my gmail and facebook accounts via the settings/online
accounts control panel.

Step 2
Went to the following websites which were successfully identified by ubuntu,
and prompted integration: facebook, linkedin, youtube, launchpad

Of these, youtube does not seem to work properly.

Step 3
Unable to get gmail or google calendar integration to work. Looks like picasa
and other integrations are listed in the "online accounts" control panel.
Perhaps gmail integration is not ready...

[Bug 355565] Re: Very poor performance when extracting audio CDs

2010-11-07 Thread spamoften
This issue is also reported as # 512098. I marked that bug as a
duplicate of this one. My comments below:

The original bug from 2006 still labeled unconfirmed in Rhythmbox.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=358770

There are dozens forum posts in google search on this item all
redirecting people to use alternative programs to rip CDs.

Used TOP with "show threads" option to display the rythmbox threads during
extract.

The top most CPU bound thread was priority 20 (the nice level for
background threads) using ~30% of a CPU core (my laptop is 1.5Ghz dual
core Intel x86).

The top IOWait was 0.

Therefore, the process was likely neither CPU or disk bound.

I noticed that the BOINC background worker threads were getting
significant CPU time, so I hit "pause" to stop background processing of
workloads. This therefore left completely idle CPU on my computer.

Afterwards, the extract performed more quickly, but was still not using
100% CPU or causing IOWaits.

iostat reported no IOWait, similar to top.

In conclusion, it is likely the thread design of the background threads
is using a far too aggressive "nice" setting and should be bumped up in
both priority and IO nice level so that the extract takes advantage of
the available hardware.

It should be obvious that if a user has deliberately clicked on a button
to extract a CD, they would prefer that operation take precedent over
other background tasks on the computer which they have not necessarily
performed a manual and specific action to perform (BOINC is a good
example).

This behavior was consistent for both Ubuntu 10.04 and Ubuntu 10.10.

[Bug 570796] Re: Impossible to rip CD in MP3 using rhythmbox

2010-11-07 Thread spamoften
10.04 ripping worked for me after installing the necessary packages.
Upgraded to 10.10 today and can still rip.
Have not tried a from-scratch install to verify if any improvements have been
made in the usability issue reported here.

[Bug 653364] [NEW] Performance far lower than Remmina

2010-10-01 Thread spamoften
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: vinagre

Related to
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=617795

Scenario: Connecting from my lower resolution laptop to higher resolution
server.

Issue: Vinagre poor scaling performance

This issue has existed ever since Ubuntu switched to shipping Vinagre.
Performance of VNC is poor when scaling remote screen to fit within local
screen.
About 1 screen refresh in 4 seconds. If I disable scaling, I may reach 1
screen refresh per second if things go well.

The "Remmina" GTK+ Remote Desktop Client has tremendously good performance and
fine feature set.
I have switched to it and am getting near instant screen refresh performance.

There really is only one thing a remote desktop viewer needs to do well,
and that is provide an experience for the user which closely matches
directly manipulating the remote desktop. Vinagre is far too slow for
VNC protocol to be considered a usable tool for a default Ubuntu
install.

Please replace Vinagre with Remmina in future Ubuntu releases.

** Affects: vinagre (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

The following Logitech QuickCam now works correctly in Ubuntu 10.04,
thanks!

Using "Cheese" (from Ubuntu repo), the Camera appears to support the
brightness, contrast (etc) controls, and provides a pixel resolution of
352x292.

I consider this bug fix/closed based on my testing.

[Bug 570796] Re: Impossible to rip CD in MP3 using rhythmbox

2010-09-09 Thread spamoften
This is clearly something many people have encountered, and the advice
is readily available in Google if you are willing to search to find it.

The real issue is that ugly codecs and such are automatically notified
as required when first trying to playback an MP 4/ MP3 file in Ubuntu
default media player. However, this only installs the reader, not the
MP3 writer.

If a package is required to enable functionality, that should be
notified in the same manner. Seems like this might be available in
simple to use common code as many programs in Ubuntu suggest installing
additional packages when required.

As noted, gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly-multiverse is the only thing
required to enable MP3 ripping.
