Over the past few days to get Ubuntu to boot, from Grub I have to choose the
older version of the kernel (wireless doesn't work with that kernel version or
I'd stay with it) which then runs a disk check and fix, and then reboot with
the new kernel.

I must say I've problems with various releases of Ubuntu on a couple of
new laptops (one Toshiba, one Advent) and different replacement hard
drives.

[Bug 482105] [NEW] Document Viewer 2.24.1 keeps opening an old copy of PDF file even though the file has been overwritten

2009-11-13 Thread startling
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

Whenever I open a PDF from the Internet using Document Viewer 2.24.1
this version of the file is the only one it renders even though the file
on the server may have changed several times. Is this a caching problem?
In browsers I can force a refresh of a page but I cannot see how to
perform the corresponding function with Document Viewer. I'm using
Ubuntu 8.10.

ProblemType: Bug
Architecture: i386
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 8.10
ExecutablePath: /usr/bin/evince
Package: evince 2.24.1-0ubuntu1
ProcEnviron:
 PATH=/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games
 LANG=en_GB.UTF-8
 SHELL=/bin/bash
SourcePackage: evince
Uname: Linux 2.6.27-15-generic i686

[Bug 178652] Re: No access to non-default sound format profiles

2009-05-17 Thread startling
I also have this problem in 8.10. I believe I have the codecs but only
four of the profiles show up in the choice list. Creating new profiles
does not help as these do not show up either.

[Bug 178530] Re: hardy alpha2 PRO/Wireless 3945ABG does not work

At last, Intrepid seems to work! I have tried Gusty and Hardy and
neither worked. I ran the live CD of Intrepid as a test and it worked.

[Bug 178530] Re: hardy alpha2 PRO/Wireless 3945ABG does not work

2008-06-12 Thread startling
I'm still running Feisty because it's the only Ubuntu version that will
connect to wireless networks - and even then it's not working as well as
it should; when I try to log onto some networks it won't connect and I
have to boot into Vista (always an embarrassment for an Ubuntu advocate
like me). Annoyingly, Vista's wireless connection also seems to be
quicker.

I tried 7.10 but no luck, and 8.04 also doesn't work. It's a shame
because I'd really like to upgrade.

My laptop is a Toshiba A100 with 3945ABG wireless.

[Bug 93408] Re: Nautilus: Eel Warning

2007-07-30 Thread startling
I got this error on Feisty 7.04 and it has totally broken Ubuntu for me.
Despite deleting more files to free up space Nautilus still reported 0
bytes disk space free, and after a reboot Ubuntu will not log in
normally: after I enter my user name and password it cannot continue. I
am new to Ubuntu and have had to go back to Windows to post this. Argh!
