[Bug 1605836] Re: Unity not starting after upgrade on dell, did dconf reset and serid

2016-07-23 Thread steampunk
Path for fix is apt-get install gnome -> select lightdm -> then enable
unity via ccsm , by itself dconf , setsid and ccsm do nothing without
installing gnome

Im pretty new at all this stuff but have a couple questions
Im in Ukraine right now and finally got my conexant modem working but
everything i do to try to fix the sound until now ( i now know these fixes
wont work, like installing linux backports and thing like that) make my
modem not work. I get a modem or device busy when dialing with kppp, gppp
and wvdial. i dont know why im telling this but it might be useful or
something :) And i guess since i bought my driver from linuxant i need to
stay with this kernel right? (or ill have to buy another)

I have been reading a lot about this and the mandriva path fix confuses
mei guess i just dont understand??
I really hate to ask a lot of questions here but i have tried on

Another thing is that i have the error code when i first boot about the

 just confused :)

I am really sorry for interrupting you guys with stupid questions but i
really want to get this fixed and if i can do anything to help please
let me know. if you dont want to answer my questions here please email

also im in for 50 USD to the person who gets the fix :)

2007-10-26 Thread steampunk
@alphablue52: well, this seems to be a thing with the new kernels .. unless
we get together and give toshiba pressure for linux support then everytime
linus and friends make changes like with .23 then we will be sitting with
the same problem ... ie. no sound etc...
what i meant with the tohiba/nvidia thing is that nvidia doesnt give out
drivers for chips like 7600 go (for windows) , they say its up to toshiba to
make sure their drivers work, so to be uptodate you have to run hacked
drivers.

@everyone: come on , go to toshiba.com and .co.uk to complain (email
forums support pages) and at least threaten them with loss of revenue..
this is something _ALL_ of us should do by default, if enough of us bitch
then they will patch the kernel and no more of this dsdt
patching/recompiling/timewasting..

at the very least , if they take several hundred dollars from us then they
should make sure we can use the bloody thing...
its time we stop thinking short term , from destro to destro version , and
start looking for a long term solution.

i'm sure we all have better things to do with our time than have toshiba
waste it for us.

otherwise , does anyone want to take up a 24/7 support contract
with Canonical maybe they will do something if you that.
@250usd and @900usd it isnt cheap...

Did anyone tried to (re)compile ALSA? I did so, but all I got was a
whole bunch of unresolved symbols. First I tried the regular way
module-assistant to recompile the alsa 1.0.14 from Ubuntu sources, and
than the fresh 1.0.15 version from alsa-project.org which seem to have
major changes in the hda-intel module. I followed these two sites (for
the forum: 2nd page 1st entry):

 http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=577699page=2
 https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HdaIntelSoundHowto

The changelog for alsa1.0.15 also states something about kernel 2.6.22
 compatibiliy.

@luis/loliverouge: which alsa version do you use (at Mandriva/opensuse)?
Is the hda-intel enabled in the kernel .config?

@steampunk: in general - you're right. BUT if something DID work and IS
WORKING in other versions and distros than it is also Ubuntu who does
something wrong. Originally I brought a Toshiba laptop among others because
the started a linux support and my old Toshiba never had problems with linux
(exept the nVidia, but that's not toshiba ;-)
I think it was the Vista Hype which made Toshiba turn their laptop into
more M$ish machines again. but yeah, let's also blame the remaining 98% of
all hardware manufactors for their lacking linux support... what a new idea!
(sorry, just kidding, never take me serious)

2007-10-25 Thread steampunk
ok , seriously. why doesnt toshiba get their act together? we should all
bitch and moan to them, not ubuntu.
regretably ubuntu can't be expected to look after each and every piece of
random hardware floating around in the ecosysem, esp considering how they
dont even control the kernel. (ie. hardware stuff)
so how about we all log onto the toshiba site and get them to do the same
f'in support for linux as we get for windows.
(its not like m$ makes the toshiba drivers that work on windows in the first
place)
its like the nvidia drivers... when last did toshiba update those the
question now is , who do you go with instead of toshiba?

Sounds like loliverouge got something working. I'm still trying to put
restricted drivers back into my custom kernel so that I've at least got
 the
 video and network drivers working.

Then I went to Windows Explorer, executed the EXE file and voila.

Re: [Bug 136469] Re: toshiba p100 series dsdt acpi error no sound, works with acpi turned off.

2007-10-21 Thread steampunk
Luis, the point is to stick with ubuntu .

i got it working with feisty a while ago by doing that DSDT.aml edit thing
on the gentoo forums (not the wiki link). from the looks of it we have to
make a DSDT.aml for each model in the series. there even is a site that
keeps track of them , so if you make one then you can submit it there for
other people.
it requires you to rename some variables in a file , not all the edit
instructions worked for me, i started removing edits untill i found the ones
causing the problem. tried to get it perfect but failed. after renaming the
variables you need to compile it. i found the instructions were really easy.
i think 3 commands or so.
It finally ran with acpi=on (that means battery stuff works), my sound is
working (no volume problems, no hda-intel stuff needed) and cpu fan works,
but when i do 3d stuff then the lappy crashes after a while and gets very
very hot. (gpu fan not running? no compiz, no games like wow. at least not
longer than +-20min ) another thing that is a problem is the +-20s delady
on bootup while giving some pci error. one of the newer ubuntu kernerls
makes the delay less but not the error.

I have not tried again and i have not updated to the 4.0 firmware in case it
gets worse like it did with this dreaded 3.0 ( vista ready ) update .

does gutsy still have this problem? anyone?
