[Bug 877905] Re: After upgrading Xserver video does not work properly
I believe I am experiencing the same problem, and it has been reported by another user on the Ubuntu forums: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1864567 The symptom is that no GLX application will run. For example, compiz reports: compiz (core) - Fatal: Root visual is not a GL visual compiz (core) - Error: Failed to manage screen: 0 compiz (core) - Fatal: No manageable screens found on display :0.0 And, glxinfo reports: X Error of failed request: BadLength (poly request too large or internal Xlib length error) Major opcode of failed request: 153 (GLX) Minor opcode of failed request: 17 (X_GLXVendorPrivateWithReply) Serial number of failed request: 17 Current serial number in output stream: 17 However, there are no errors reported in my Xorg.0.log, including loading of GLX: (II) AIGLX: enabled GLX_MESA_copy_sub_buffer (II) AIGLX: enabled GLX_SGI_make_current_read (II) AIGLX: enabled GLX_SGI_swap_control and GLX_MESA_swap_control (II) AIGLX: GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap backed by buffer objects (II) AIGLX: Loaded and initialized /usr/lib/dri/r200_dri.so (II) GLX: Initialized DRI2 GL provider for screen 0 As reported in the Ubuntu forums thread, the two users there are running the 2.6.38-12 #51~lucid1-Ubuntu SMP kernel, one with pae and one generic. The problem appears with both the intel i915 driver and radeon driver. Reverting to the prior versions of xserver-common and xserver-xorg-core does restore GLX functionality, so it seems that the update is causing the problem. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/877905 Title: After upgrading Xserver video does not work properly To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/877905/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 428599] Re: Tracker ignores contents of djvu files
I think a DJVU filter for tracker would be an important addition. The DJVU format is becoming popular amongst people doing DIY book scanning, thanks to these excellent tools: 1) Scan Tailor, for image post-processing http://scantailor.sourceforge.net/ 2) djvubind, a script for Linux that creates a DJVU file with searchable, positioned OCR text from Scan Tailor's output http://code.google.com/p/djvubind/ deb here: http://code.google.com/p/djvubind/downloads/list It seems that eventually the goal is to incorporate the functions of djvubind into the Scan Tailor GUI. The tools can be used on any images of pages, whether generated by a flatbed scanner (which I use) or one of the homebrew camera-based scanners developed here: http://www.diybookscanner.org/ All of that is to say that I think DJVU may become somewhat less obscure - the Internet Archive uses the format, too. The following thread from the Tracker mailing list states that what is needed is an extractor module for Tracker (as opposed to a filter - filters are no longer used in tracker = 0.7.x): http://mail.gnome.org/archives/tracker-list/2010-August/msg00022.html Here's the howto for writing an extractor module: http://library.gnome.org/devel/libtracker-extract/unstable/libtracker-extract-How-to-use-libtracker-extract.html I think the command needed for the extractor module is djvutxt, which is part of the djvulibre-bin package. This is as far as I've gotten with things so far. I've attached a screen shot of two pages of the PDF posted in comment #52 as rendered by evince in Lucid (updated on April 11). The thumbnail for page 9, which is anti-aliased, appears in grey tones, while the thumbnails of the pages which are not anti-aliased appear in black-and-white. The pages themselves are rendered similarly to the thumbnails, as the screenshots show. In xpdf, all of the pages are anti-aliased equally, both in Lucid and in Karmic. Likewise in Okular. [Bug 239575] Re: Zotero (Firefox extension)
The java problem is version-dependent. For example, I'm using the icedtea plugin with Zotero 2.02, Firefox 3.5.8 and OpenOffice.org 3.2 with no issues. My understanding is that for Zotero's integration with OpenOffice.org to work with Firefox ≥ 3.6, IcedTea6 1.7 is required, specifically the new IcedTea NPRuntime-based plugin included with IcedTea6 1.7. Otherwise the Sun java plugin is required. Here's a relevant thread at the Zotero forums: http://forums.zotero.org/discussion/11429/zotero-in-ubuntu-104-lucid-lynx/ I believe that the need for the NPRuntime-based plugin is not limited to Zotero's OOo extension but that it is needed for all java applets to run in Firefox ≥ 3.6. Since Lucid has Firefox 3.6.3, I'm thinking that it's likely that the IcedTea NPRuntime plugin will be available on realease of Lucid. In any case, there continue to be new builds of OpenJDK for Lucid: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openjdk-6 As of this writing, the last release was just four days ago. All of that is to say that I've been waiting for Lucid final before concluding that the plugin from Sun will be required for the Zotero/OOo integration extension. It seems possible that it may not be a requirement. I don't have any authoritative knowledge on any of this, it's just what I've gathered from reading. But it's one reason why I haven't yet updated the Ubuntu wiki page for Zotero 2.0 yet: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Zotero FWIW, Zotero is now GPLv3: http://www.zotero.org/support/changelog#changes_in_2.0rc1_january_26_2010 -- Zotero (Firefox extension) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/239575 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

BTW, every PDF I tried is anti-aliased with the patch in lucid. These are all black-and-white images, in varying resolutions (150-600 dpi). [Bug 239575] Re: Zotero (Firefox extension)
Yes, in the end, I do think it would be best to wait on packaging Zotero for Ubuntu. Perhaps it's worth noting that Zotero is not at all unstable from a user's point of view, or at least, it's not for me. I've been using it fairly extensively for over a year now and had no real problems (i.e., data loss, drastic malfunction). However, Zotero is somewhat unstable from a packager's point of view, just because there are still a lot of releases at present, too many for backports. I think it would be best to wait and see what the development roadmap looks like after the 1.5 release, which is currently in public beta testing. -- Zotero (Firefox extension) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/239575 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 239575] Re: Zotero (Firefox extension)
@Dimitrios Symeonidis: Thanks for taking the time to post again, I appreciate and accept your apology. @John Vivirito: @Alexander Sack: I've been thinking about this project, and before proceeding, I'd like to talk with you guys about how backports work for Firefox extensions that have been packaged for Ubuntu. The thing is, Zotero is still in active development and gets updated fairly frequently. Not as frequently as some extensions (NoScript, for example), but still. The updates fix bugs, add new features, and are definitely worth using. So, I'd like to find out more about whether the Ubuntu package can get updated as Zotero is updated, which I suppose would involve backports. If the package cannot be updated, I can see that things could get complicated for supporting users. It would be a shame if the first support step for anyone using an Ubuntu package of Zotero is uninstall the Ubuntu version and update from the Zotero site. In fact, Zotero already recommends using their site rather than addons.mozilla.org, precisely because there can be a delay before new releases are available there. See the last paragraph here: http://www.zotero.org/documentation/installation Maybe it would be better to wait until Zotero development stabilizes. I don't know how long that might take - right now, there's a 1.5 version in public beta-testing, which adds some great features like remote sync of the Zotero database. Here's the development roadmap, it looks like a lot of releases are planned through the coming autumn: http://www.zotero.org/documentation/development_roadmap I'll try to bring this up for discussion on IRC in the near future, unless there are other suggestions. -- Zotero (Firefox extension) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/239575 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Hi john, and thanks for taking a look at this. Zotero is in the Suggested extensions missing details section of this wiki page: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MozillaTeam/Extensions/List?action=showredirect=MozillaTeam%2FFirefox3Extensions I put it in that section because there is a question about the license. Zotero uses the ECL license, version 1. See: http://www.zotero.org/documentation/#small_print_stuff http://www.opensource.org/licenses/ecl1.php ECLv1 isn't listed as a good license on the wiki, but it is supposed to be OSS. [Bug 239575] Re: Zotero (Firefox extension)
The OOo extension is specifically for Zotero. Basically, it allows Zotero to be used as a Bibliography manager for OOo. You can see more about how it works here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Zotero#Integration%20with%20OpenOffice.org (There's a screenshot, too :).) The Zotero extension is an OXT file that is available of the Zotero site: http://www.zotero.org/documentation/openoffice_integration So, it's not at all the same as the Mozilla extension for OOo, which allows office files to be viewed in the browser: http://packages.ubuntu.com/hardy-updates/mozilla-openoffice.org I couldn't find mozilla-openoffice.org listed on launchpad, but it is in the repos. I'm using version 2.4.1-1ubuntu2 from hardy-updates, and there is a package for intrepid. Actually, packaging the OOo extension is probably something to be taken up with the OOo team rather than the Mozilla team, so it's not really on-topic for this bug. In any case, the Firefox extension is the first thing to think about, since the Zotero OOo extension won't work without it. I will see what I can do about trying to package Zotero, and I'll subscribe to the mailing list. -- Zotero (Firefox extension) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/239575 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

There is an option to print a selection in Firefox 3 (tested with firefox-3.0+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.8.04.1). In the GTK+ printing dialog (File - Print), choose the Options tab. You should see a check box for Print Selection Only. It will be grayed out unless a something has been selected in the text before calling the print dialog. I've added a screenshot of the dialog. It lives right where you do your work — in the web browser itself. It's a very useful extension for anyone who does academic or other scholarly research. In addition to scraping citation data directly into its database from the many supported online libraries and other sites, Zotero also allows for web snapshots, PDFs and other files to be associated with the database entries, tagging, full-text searching, export in different styles to a variety of formats. I'm sorry, it wasn't meant as an advertisement. I really would like to see Zotero packaged for Ubuntu, and maybe to see if I can help out with that. I was following the instructions on the page for Firefox extensions in the Ubuntu wiki: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MozillaTeam/Firefox3Extensions I made an entry for Zotero on the Firefox extensions wiki page in the Suggested extensions missing details section because that's what I was told to do on #ubuntu-mozillateam, which I visited to ask about the license of Zotero which is supposedly open but isn't listed in the wiki (it's the Educational Community License, version 1). And the wiki said to include a launchpad bug report, so I made this one. So they don't appear if both sis-agp and amd64-agp are loaded (which is the normal case)? No. Sorry I wasn't clear. Here's what I observe: 1) sis-agp and amd64-agp are loaded - APIC errors 2) only amd64-agp is loaded - APIC errors 3) only sis-agp - no APIC errors, but no drm module or direct rendering either In other words, there is no case for me in which direct rendering works AND there are no APIC errors. -- sis 760 AGP broken on amd64 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/34144 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 34144] Re: sis 760 AGP broken on amd64
I've installed Ubuntu now. :) With linux-image-2.6.22-14-generic (version 2.6.22-14.46), the size of the AGP aperture is identified correctly: cat /var/log/dmesg | grep agpgart [ 33.994241] Linux agpgart interface v0.102 (c) Dave Jones [ 34.107968] agpgart: Detected AGP bridge 0 [ 34.111845] agpgart: AGP aperture is 128M @ 0xf000 DRI is working, as well, with both the sis-agp and the amd64-agp modules loaded. However, the APIC errors continue: Nov 14 00:23:53 menagerie kernel: [39901.561197] APIC error on CPU0: 40(40) Nov 14 00:23:54 menagerie kernel: [39902.100165] APIC error on CPU0: 40(40) Nov 14 00:23:54 menagerie kernel: [39902.558190] APIC error on CPU0: 40(40) Nov 14 00:23:54 menagerie kernel: [39902.558507] APIC error on CPU0: 40(40) Nov 14 00:23:54 menagerie kernel: [39902.558936] APIC error on CPU0: 40(40) Nov 14 00:23:54 menagerie kernel: [39902.559095] APIC error on CPU0: 40(40) Nov 14 00:23:54 menagerie kernel: [39902.742347] APIC error on CPU0: 40(40) Nov 14 00:23:54 menagerie kernel: [39902.742956] APIC error on CPU0: 40(40) Nov 14 00:23:55 menagerie kernel: [39903.359838] APIC error on CPU0: 40(40) -- sis 760 AGP broken on amd64 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/34144 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 34144] Re: sis 760 AGP broken on amd64
I had a chance to experiment with things some, and I think I made a little progress. I was doing this on a Gentoo system with a 2.6.22 kernel compiled from gentoo-sources, but I don't think that makes a difference. Although this is amd64 hardware, I'm using an x86 kernel/OS. As I mentioned in the a href=https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8840freedesktop bug/a, it seems to me that incorrect identification of the AGP aperture size as 4M no matter what the BIOS setting is related to the SIS 760 device IDs in the sis-agp module of the kernel. If that is the case, then it should be possible to comment out the device IDs and recompile the module in order to see how the aperture size is identified. I had tried to do this before and apparently made some mistakes, but this time I did things correctly. Because, when I booted using the modified sis-agp module, I saw the following in the syslog: Oct 31 10:00:31 menagerie agpgart: Detected AGP bridge 0 Oct 31 10:00:31 menagerie agpgart: AGP aperture is 128M @ 0xf000 Compare this with the unaltered kernel module: [ 102.351910] agpgart: Detected SiS 760 chipset [ 102.352228] agpgart: AGP aperture is 4M @ 0xf000 128M is the BIOS setting. I've attached a patch to show what I changed in the sis-agp module to get the above result. Unfortunately, however, using this altered module did not solve the APIC error problem. That is, with the altered sis-agp module and amd64-agp loaded, the AGP aperture size was identified correctly during boot, DRI was enabled, but the stream of APIC errors began once the drm module was loaded. So it's not really a patch that solves things for me, just some more information that I thought might be useful. @Neil Wilson, I'm using the most recent beta BIOS for my motherboard (asus k8s-mx). I've upgraded the BIOS twice since opening this bug, with no effect on the problem. Regarding the noapic boot option, I've used that too but found it a problematic workaround. For me, it leads to IRQ problems such as: Oct 31 06:04:20 menagerie irq 7: nobody cared (try booting with the irqpoll option) Oct 31 06:04:20 menagerie [c0148be4] __report_bad_irq+0x24/0x80 Oct 31 06:04:20 menagerie [c0148e91] note_interrupt+0x251/0x280 Oct 31 06:04:20 menagerie [c0148115] handle_IRQ_event+0x25/0x50 Oct 31 06:04:20 menagerie [c014987d] handle_level_irq+0xcd/0x110 Oct 31 06:04:20 menagerie [c010672e] do_IRQ+0x3e/0x80 Oct 31 06:04:20 menagerie [c010498f] common_interrupt+0x23/0x28 Oct 31 06:04:20 menagerie [c0102b3a] default_idle+0x2a/0x40 Oct 31 06:04:20 menagerie [c01023e3] cpu_idle+0x43/0x80 Oct 31 06:04:20 menagerie [c0462b2f] start_kernel+0x21f/0x2b0 Oct 31 06:04:20 menagerie [c0462450] unknown_bootoption+0x0/0x260 Oct 31 06:04:20 menagerie === Oct 31 06:04:20 menagerie handlers: Oct 31 06:04:20 menagerie [c02ddf50] (usb_hcd_irq+0x0/0x60) Oct 31 06:04:20 menagerie Disabling IRQ #7 And that is accompanied by the whole system freezing. Again, this is only when using noapic at boot. The mother board I'm using is kind of strange because it has both an AGP slot and a PCI Express slot (1x), maybe that's part of the issue. I don't have anything plugged into the PCIe slot, though. In any case, I believe that my experiment with the device IDs suggests that the issue is with the kernel module. And I notice that the AGP kernel maintainer, Dave Airlie, has already responded to this bug, so... In any case, there is now some evidence that there is a regression here as far as the SIS AGP driver is concerned and that it is not a matter of BIOS setting or updates. Thanks. ** Attachment added: sis-agp module minus the SIS 760 device ID info http://launchpadlibrarian.net/10250120/sis-agp.c.patch -- sis 760 AGP broken on amd64 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/34144 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 34144] Re: sis 760 AGP broken on amd64
@Neil Wilson Hi, We only took the route of deleting the module because I'm using a LiveCD and so could not blacklist and reboot with that change saved. It's just a workaround because I don't have an Ubuntu install at present (although I will install if needed). At this point, I think there are two problems. Problem 1: If both the amd64_agp and the sis_agp drivers are loaded, then there is a conflict that prevents the size of the agp aperture from being identified correctly (4M rather than the setting in the BIOS, which is 128M for me); dri is not enabled. Problem 2: If only the amd64_agp driver is used, then dri works too, BUT the system also produces a steady stream of APIC errors which are written to the syslog at varying rates (more frequently for me than for awen, it seems). Do you happen to see the APIC errors in your syslog, too? Since the kernel instructions indicate that both amd64_agp and a chipset specific module are needed for amd64 systems, maybe it's not too surprising that there is some kind of adverse effect to not using sis_agp at all. (I'm referring to the instruction that are visible from the curses menuconfig interface, I'm actually not sure where they are located to make a link to show what I'm talking about). -- sis 760 AGP broken on amd64 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/34144 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 34144] Re: sis 760 AGP broken on amd64
@Tormod Well, I'm not able to remove the sis_agp module once it's been loaded during the LiveCD boot, even after stopping gdm and manually removing all other modules related to video (radeon, drm, amd64_agp) - agpgart cannot be removed either, but that makes sense because it depends on sis_agp. I also tried booting in safe graphics mode. But it seems that once the sis_agp module is active, it can't be unloaded. So I will try installing Ubuntu to a partition and then renaming the sis agp module. -- sis 760 AGP broken on amd64 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/34144 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 34144] Re: sis 760 AGP broken on amd64
I was able to delete the module from the busybox shell and then boot into the LiveCD, and direct rendering is now working. Yay! And thanks for the hand-holding, I don't have a lot of experience with LiveCDs. There is one side effect I've noticed, however. I'm seeing lots of APIC errors being written to the syslog. Hi, I'm still seeing this problem with the i386 version of Ubuntu 7.10, using the LiveCD. So, my experience is that the bug is not amd64 only. The AGP aperture size is set to 128M in my BIOS. However, I have tried renaming the sis_agp module in a Gentoo installation, with kernels up to 2.6.23, and this did not change how the AGP aperture size was identified as 4M. I've also tried patching the device ids in the kernel so that the particular model of the SIS chipset isn't identified, but that didn't fix things either although I might have made errors with this. Please let me know if other log files from a LiveCD boot would be useful. Hi, sorry for the slow response and thank you very much for attending to this bug. I wasn't able to reboot to try the Feisty beta CD until this evening.
