[Bug 307892] Re: pitivi crashed with SIGSEGV in PyThreadState_New()

2010-01-05 Thread Jean-François Fortin Tam
Thanks for reporting this bug. The version of PiTiVi you are using is
not the latest version, and the PiTiVi devs can only afford to
investigate bugs that are reproducible on the latest PiTiVi release or
the development (git) version. Your problem may have been fixed in
either of those versions, and, as such, will be marked as obsolete. If
you can still reproduce this problem on these versions, you are
encouraged to file a bug upstream (see http://www.pitivi.org/?go=bugs).

[Bug 503410] [NEW] Fluendo MP3 and MPEG codecs are not supported

2010-01-05 Thread Jean-François Fortin Tam
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pitivi

Taken from the PiTiVi user manual:
Some GStreamer codecs, such as the Fluendo MP3 and MPEG muxers, while
providing you with a legal way to playback files (in countries where software
patents laws are upheld), may not be completely compliant to the GStreamer
specifications.
Some users have reported problems when using those codecs (read: not being able
to import MP3 files when those codecs are installed).

The reason for this behavior is that they are codecs oriented towards
playback, and, being not entirely spec-compliant with GStreamer, cannot
be used correctly by PiTiVi for editing.

This situation is unfortunate. If, eventually, those codecs are fixed to
become full-fledged GStreamer-compliant playback and editing codecs,
they will work with PiTiVi.

In countries where software patents are not upheld, you can simply
remove them and use the GStreamer “ugly” set of plugins instead.

There is nothing that PiTiVi can do on this front.

[Bug 500682] [NEW] allow module-cork-music-on-phone module for VoIP apps

2009-12-26 Thread Jean-François Fortin Tam
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

Seems like module-cork-music-on-phone was disabled because of various
problems/confusion among users (such as bug #437638 ?). I am filing this
bug report because I'd eventually like a proper solution and something
that Just Works for apps such as SFLPhone.

See also: https://projects.savoirfairelinux.com/issues/show/1934#note-2
; in comment #2, I mention that neither totem nor rhythmbox mute
themselves when I'm receiving a VoIP call, and since SFLPhone now
depends on pulseaudio to do that, I'd expect this feature to work some
day.

[Bug 414215] Re: cannot set the microphone to use the internal microphone on a Dell Mini 9 in karmic

[Bug 469701] Re: Crash\memory leak when renaming RAW (ARW) files

2009-12-16 Thread Jean-François Fortin Tam
Hey there Stani, I'm also experiencing this bug. I have a core2quad with
4 Gb of memory (3.9 Gb available, with a PAE-enabled kernel). I wanted
to simply convert 432 Nikon (.NEF) files to jpeg after resizing.
Symptoms are the same as julez's, memory usage climbing (currently 1.3
Gb used while only 32 files have been processed!), and once in a while,
a file fails to convert, citing the cannot allocate memory error.

To some extent, I'm glad it's failing. I would have filled my 4 Gb of
RAM. Why doesn't Phatch free memory after each image?

[Bug 497594] [NEW] performance: check for existing files *before* doing the processing on a picture

2009-12-16 Thread Jean-François Fortin Tam
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: phatch

Currently, if you uncheck the Overwrite existing images option, phatch
still processes the image before trying to check if it should be saved
or not.

I know this is not easy to fix, but ideally, when I have a thousand
images to process and launch the batch job multiple times, it should
just continue where it left off, without reprocessing images that
already have an existing output file.

Re: [Bug 448438] Re: idle/screensaver inhibition feature doesn't work reliably in karmic

2009-12-09 Thread Jean-François Fortin Tam

I've built an updated hamster-applet package in the following PPA:

 https://launchpad.net/~mdeslaur/+archive/screen-locking

Please try it, along with the gnome-screensaver security update for
karmic that came out a couple of days ago, and give feedback here.

I gave it a shot, tested with totem, hamster, fullscreen eye-of-gnome,
with
- screensaver
- screen blanking
- automatic suspend/sleep/whatever

...and it works! Great! :)

On a side note, I did have the impression that my netbook (also running
9.10, but not running hamster applet) also sometimes had a problem with
session idling, suggesting the possible presence of *yet another* bug on
top of all this, but maybe it was just my imagination; I am not really
qualified enough to investigate that. Time will tell, or maybe Chris
Coulson knows about other session idling problems?

In any case, the most visible part of this bug is fixed by the (not
optimal, but working) hamster patch.
It feels all warm and fuzzy to finally have working session idling
again.

[Bug 479630] Re: cannot use a SOCKS proxy in karmic with most applications

2009-11-14 Thread Jean-François Fortin Tam
Yes, it is consistently reproducible. To do this:

1. have a machine that will be used as the SSH host in which you will tunnel
into
2. SSH into it, by running this in a terminal: ssh -v -N -D 8000
the-remote-host, keep the terminal open
3. go in gnome's proxy settings (gnome-network-properties)
4. set the mode to manual proxy configuration
5. set the socks host to localhost, port 8000 (leave the other proxy types
blank)
6. make the terminal (the one with the ssh tunnel running in it) show always
on top so you can see its activity at all times
7. use epiphany, evolution, empathy, to visit websites or connect to accounts.
Notice that nothing happens in the terminal.
8. use chromium-browser, firefox, pidgin to do the same: notice that activity
shows up in the terminal where SSH is running (new channels are opened,
etc.), indicating that those apps indeed use the socks proxy

So actually it's not that the gnome proxy is broken, but that evolution,
empathy and epiphany (which used to work) don't support it.

[Bug 482217] [NEW] regression: broken keyboard shortcut for inserting notes/comments

2009-11-13 Thread Jean-François Fortin Tam
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

Initially filed upstream as
http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=106383

I used to be able to be able to insert notes in Writer by doing
Ctrl+Alt+N but this doesn't seem to work with OpenOffice 3.1.1 on one of
my Ubuntu 9.10 machines: I can only insert notes using the menus or
toolbar button that I added, hitting Ctrl+Alt+N does nothing.

Removing ~/.openoffice.org/3/ does not solve the problem.

I have now installed ubuntu 9.10 on two machines. Both machines use the
official build from the ubuntu main repositories (not a PPA), and one
exhibits the behavior, the other doesn't.

Could you give me some hint to investigate further what is causing this,
since it looks like the packages are not at fault, and the user config
doesn't seem to be either?

[Bug 479630] [NEW] cannot use a SOCKS proxy in karmic with most applications

And setting gnome-network-properties (the proxy thing) to connect to the

[Bug 479630] Re: cannot use a SOCKS proxy in karmic with most applications

2009-11-09 Thread Jean-François Fortin Tam
Oh yes, I forgot to mention: this used to work fine in Ubuntu 8.10 with
Epiphany, Pidgin, etc. Evolution didn't take the proxy into account, but
that was probably because of

Re: [Bug 410407] Re: [READ DESCRIPTION] Flash is not recognizing mouse clicks in multiple situations

2009-11-08 Thread Jean-François Fortin Tam

an update of Chrome has just
 fixed this issue for me.
 [...]

I'd instead like to ask if
the latest update fixes this for anyone else on chromium and compiz.

Indeed, I am subscribed to the upstream bug reports, and chromium issue
#25288 was marked as fixed in SVN revision #31297 two days ago.

Today's daily PPA updates are chromium SVN revision 31403, so it's quite
possible this was fixed. So far, so good (according to my minimal
testing on Youtube).

Re: [Bug 448438] Re: idle/screensaver inhibition feature doesn't work reliably in karmic

2009-11-01 Thread Jean-François Fortin Tam
After further testing, I was able to determine that this is not
architecture/package-specific either. Creating a blank account account
on this computer, I can see that only my main account is affected, so it
must be the usual broken/corrupt configuration problem.

The problem is that I have no idea where to look. I have tried resetting
gnome-power-manager's gconf values, removing various folders in
~/.config, ~/.gnome2/, ~/.local/share/, etc. Advice on what to look
at/attempt would be welcome!

Re: [Bug 448438] Re: idle/screensaver inhibition feature doesn't work reliably in karmic

2009-10-31 Thread Jean-François Fortin Tam
In the hope that it can help as per previous comment, here are some
steps for reproducing:

- in gnome-power-preferences, set the screen to blank after 1 minute of
inactivity
- (optional?): in gnome-screensaver-preferences, set the session to go
idle/screensaver to activate at 1 minute

Now, logout and login (to make sure you have a clean session). Then:
1. do nothing for 2 minutes. The screen should blank. If you have
empathy running, the status should become Away
2. move the mouse or type something, the session becomes active again
3. to break this normal cycle, open any image (with the default image
viewer, eog), go in fullscreen (F11) or slideshow mode (F5), the message
'Method InhibitActivation with signature s on interface
org.gnome.ScreenSaver doesn't exist' will be printed in the terminal
if you ran it from a terminal.**
4. close eog*
5. wait as long as you want, the session will not go idle.

*: step 3 can (at the time I am writing this) be tested also by playing
any movie with totem, then exiting totem
**: for some reason, this happens on my generic desktop machine, but not
on my lpia netbook.

[Bug 463019] [NEW] recordmydesktop does not record frames properly in karmic

2009-10-28 Thread Jean-François Fortin Tam
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gtk-recordmydesktop

For some reason, RMD in karmic doesn't record properly. Even if I set it
to record at 30 fps (and I have a quadcore processor, it's clearly not
the bottleneck), it seems to record at 0.5 or 1 frame per second.
Completely useless, sadly.

difference.

[Bug 303802] Re: Wireless Card Fails After X Amount of Time or Y Amount of Data Transfered

2009-10-20 Thread Jean-François Fortin Tam
I'm seeing this currently with Karmic. My wireless simply stops working
after a few hours (today, roughly 6 hours or more after startup).
Nothing much was happening on the computer that was idling on IRC; when
I came back, the wifi was dead, with stuff like this in kern.log:

Oct 20 15:43:02 kusanagi kernel: [21573.559107] ipw2200: Failed to send SSID:
Reason -16
Oct 20 15:43:37 kusanagi kernel: [21608.594208] ipw2200: No space for Tx
Oct 20 15:43:37 kusanagi kernel: [21608.594213] ipw2200: Failed to send

Now, the only thing I tried that seemed to work was to
sudo rmmod ipw2200
sudo modprobe ipw2200

After which, it worked.

Yes, along with gnome-session and gnome-power-manager.

I did some further testing, and indeed, eog causes the same kinds of
problems as totem did: if you use fullscreen once, you won't have

It also affects EoG when you use fullscreen/slideshow:

This indicates a bug in someone's code. You must ensure an error is NULL before

[Bug 448438] Re: idle/screensaver inhibition feature doesn't work reliably in karmic

2009-10-17 Thread Jean-François Fortin Tam
Upstream replied that they fixed the warnings in totem, and that they couldn't
reproduce the problem, but I can see how the original warning might happen.
Most likely, gnome-screensaver crashed, or was killed, and the gnome-session
inhibition didn't notice. gnome-screensaver is supposed to proxy to
gnome-session, and it should be transparent to users.

Bastien finished by: File a bug against gnome-screensaver if you still
see the problem.

Now the question is whether we will still be affected now that a fix for
the warnings has been committed in totem, or if gnome-screensaver is
still problematic, or something.

Luis, could you help doing some additional testing on this? I'm not sure
how to proceed myself.

according to replies from other users in this thread, I'm not alone in
this use case, but there are some more fancy approaches.

But then it seems this has already been patched by the time I'm writing
this, so I'll just wait for the package updates.

What's the status for this regarding a Karmic PPA or something of the like,
do we still have unmet dependencies?

[Bug 345803] Re: Rendering glitch in Evince

2009-10-10 Thread Jean-François Fortin Tam
I think this bug is gone in Karmic; I just tested with Evince 2.28
(which uses poppler 0.12.0). If that's the case for you too, I guess the
bug should also be closed upstream.

[Bug 448438] [NEW] idle/screensaver inhibition feature doesn't work reliably in karmic

2009-10-10 Thread Jean-François Fortin Tam
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

Ok, this is really weird. I know that gnome-power-manager's inhibition
features have been migrated over to be handled by gnome-session, and the
g-p-m features for that were deprecated in gnome 2.28.

What I'm seeing here is that
- totem does seem to inhibit the screensaver (contrary to what other bug
reports say), however:
- it sometimes forgets to release the inhibition. If you run it with --debug,
you can see errors such as this one:

j...@kusanagi:~$ totem --debug Vidéos/8-bit\ trip.mp4

(totem:4604): GLib-WARNING **: GError set over the top of a previous GError or
uninitialized memory.
This indicates a bug in someone's code. You must ensure an error is NULL before
it's set.
The overwriting error message was: Method AllowActivation with signature
on interface org.gnome.ScreenSaver doesn't exist

** (totem:4604): WARNING **: Problem inhibiting the screensaver: Method
UnInhibit with signature u on interface org.gnome.ScreenSaver
doesn't exist

Now, I'm not sure exactly why, the inhibition sometimes seems to work,
sometimes not. When it doesn't work,
- the screen will not blank anymore, the session will not go idle (and will not
lock)
- if you attempt to log out of gnome, you will get a warning about totem
(sometimes, multiple instances of totem!) being busy and inhibiting (while
totem has only a single instance, and it is long gone).

I hope I'm clear enough and that this info is helpful. One thing that is
certainly crucial to get right for Ubuntu 9.10 final is session
inhibition, especially when dealing with the default video player.

[Bug 325973] Re: gnome-session keeps respawning nautilus when no desktop is drawed

2009-10-09 Thread Jean-François Fortin Tam
I have a few questions:
- this was patched in Ubuntu 9.04, any reason (other than time/manpower) why
this isn't the case for 9.10 anymore?
- is it harmful in any way to chmod 444
/usr/share/applications/nautilus.desktop?

This is pretty much the only issue I've had with Ubuntu 9.10 so far that
is severe, if I did not have a core2quad, I would probably not have
survived to ask about this :)
