Still running this hardware and still encountering this issue (tried
removing the libata.force=1.5G today with the same results reported in
the original bug report).

[Bug 1288747] Re: [334] Parts of the UI randomly flicker when moving the mouse

2014-07-13 Thread thedanyes
Just a quick update on this. The issue came back when Ubuntu updated my
compiz packages to the latest 1:0.9.11.1+14.04.20140701-0ubuntu1
versions.

I updated to NVIDIA 340.24, and that didn't help.

I had to actually stop lightdm from a tty and manually remove the entire
ubuntu-desktop and associated packages (including compiz). Then I had
to use apt-get install and manually type in the versions of compiz
,compiz-core,compiz-default-plugins,compiz-gnome,libcompizconfig, and
libdecorations to install them all. Then I had to use the dpkg --set-
selections to make sure my packages wouldn't get overwritten. Then I
reinstalled ubuntu-desktop.

Anyway, it seems to be working more-or-less fine again now, but that was
a big hassle.

I see similar Compiz RAM usage. I have 16GB of RAM so it hasn't really
affected me, but it does seem a bit odd.

Also an update regarding flickering. I have only noticed very minor
flickering (maybe unrelated to this bug) since adding Christopher's
repo. I have had a few system hangs, but I believe I encountered
similar hangs before updating. Here are my Compiz packages (with
descriptions removed for formatting purposes) to confirm what I'm
running:

[Bug 1288747] Re: [334] Parts of the UI randomly flicker when moving the mouse

2014-06-16 Thread thedanyes
I just updated to Christopher Townsend's repo. This update seems to
have fixed the problem for me. It's only been five minutes, but I've
tested the situations that were most frequently exhibiting this problem
(editing files in Vi within Guake while using pageup/pagedown to scroll,
and scrolling through my song list in Quod Libet and then making a
different window active right after that.)

I'm running GTX 560 Ti with NVIDIA 337.19 and Kernel
3.13.0-29-lowlatency x86_64 and fully-updated Ubuntu 14.04.

I get this same issue on GTX 560 Ti with NVIDIA 337.12, Ubuntu 14.04
64-bit, 3.13.0-24-lowlatency kernel. The workaround from #48 didn't
help me much at all.

[Bug 991040] Re: COMRESET failed (errno=-16) on Intel SSD

2014-05-01 Thread thedanyes
I've been experiencing this same issue since upgrading my motherboard
recently. I have the Asrock H87M Pro4 with the latest (Dec 2013)
firmware, along with an Intel X25-M 160GB 50nm with the latest firmware.
I had to add the kernel parameter rootdelay=90 for my system to start
up, because the 60s delay was causing it to fail to busybox.

I just learned today that if I pass the parameter libata.force=1.5G to
the kernel, it allows my system to boot with no delay. Now, I'm limited
to ~125MB/s on my SSD (as tested by hdparm -t) so that sucks, but at
least my system is working right.

Here is info about my software:

[Bug 1268838] [NEW] Unable to mount audio disc - Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus)

2014-01-13 Thread thedanyes
Public bug reported:

I have an Asus external slim USB optical drive and when I insert an
Audio CD, Unity pops up a message with the text in the summary: Unable
to mount audio disc - Message did not receive a reply (timeout by
message bus). I'm able to open VLC and successfully play the audio
disc, so I don't think it's a hardware issue. I've tried checking the
box marked Never prompt or start programs on media insertion in the
System Settings in the Details - Removable media section with no change
in behavior.

[Bug 1235748] Re: FFe: Sync binutils-avr 2.23.1-1 (universe) from Debian unstable (main)

2014-01-13 Thread thedanyes
Versions 2.20 (and 2.21) contain a very serious and frustrating bug for Arduino
developers (compilation just fails seemingly 'randomly'). The only clue is a
cryptic error message, something like:
GNU ld (GNU Binutils) 2.21
e:/winavr/4.7.0-1/bin/../lib/gcc/avr/4.7.0/../../../../avr/lib/avr6/crtm2560.o:
In function `__vectors':
../../../../../../source/avr-libc-1.7.1/crt1/gcrt1.S:53: relocation truncated
to fit: R_AVR_13_PCREL against symbol `__vector_1' defined in .text section in
e:/winavr/4.7.0-1/bin/../lib/gcc/avr/4.7.0/../../../../avr/lib/avr6/crtm2560.o
collect2.exe: error: ld returned 1 exit status

It seems like it could be fixed easily (just by pulling the updated
package from Debian). Please read the link in my previous post for
further details.

2013-12-22 Thread thedanyes
Today this bug occurs still with Fujitsu ScanSnap S500 on Ubuntu 13.04.
This is probably the most annoying and constant bug in xsane for me, and
the modal dialog pops up every time I scan with more than one document
in the sheet feeder (basically every time I scan).

[Bug 478761] Re: failed to start scanner: Invalid argument

2013-12-22 Thread thedanyes
The 'failed to start scanner: invalid argument' error message seems
rather non-specific, and by association I think this bug discussion
overall seems rather non-specific. I can intermittently replicate this
error message by plugging my Fujitsu ScanSnap S500 into an over-loaded
USB hub. lsusb still shows it, but scanimage -L gives the no scanners
were identified error, and of course xsane gives the failed to start
scanner: invalid argument error. Unplugging the scanner and plugging
it into a different USB port fixes the issue.

I think what the original poster described seems like a hardware-
specific issue, and maybe this should be separated out into one bug per
scanner model, or at least better described in the bug title.

[Bug 1033226] Re: No close option, only restart

2013-05-31 Thread thedanyes
@matteosistisette
You wouldn't really need to click the okay, since you're restarting anyway, and
it seems like the rest of your steps only lament how difficult it is to restart
through the normal Ubuntu unity menu interface. If there's some issue with the
normal restart process (and I'm not saying there isn't), I'd think that best
addressed through a new bug/suggestion.

An attempt to make up for weaknesses in the normal restart process by
adding new places to restart from doesn't make sense to me.

[Bug 1033226] Re: No close option, only restart

2013-05-29 Thread thedanyes
I'd be fine with a 'restart later' button or a 'don't remind me again'
button, though I still think it comes across as arrogant to imply an
immediate restart should be done without giving the user any specific
details about which update(s) require a restart or why a restart is
necessary.

I still think an informational dialog box with a single OK button would
be the simplest way to get the point across, and I don't particularly
see the need for a restart button at all when the user already has
another convenient way to restart.

[Bug 1071209] Re: memtest86+ test #7 false positives (random number sequence error)

2013-03-07 Thread thedanyes
I also encountered this bug while testing my PC with a burned 12.10 x64
disc. It was an older copy so I can't say I know whether this still
affects ISOs downloaded today, but it's a pretty nasty bug. Probably
wasted a good 3 hours of troubleshooting time for me, over a period of a
week.

My hardware configuration: AMD A4-3800 on A75 chipset and tried with
various DDR3 modules (Kingston, G. Skill, etc). Fails at 129MB or so on
test 7, as previously reported.

@Tye Sorry I didn't see your inquiry for so long. I can't say for sure which
revision I had when I was seeing the problems, but I first noticed they were
fixed with the latest Version 0048. There were many entries in the firmware
development changelog that indicated problems related to video and PCIe devices
with different revisions.

[Bug 1033226] Re: No close option, only restart

2013-01-22 Thread thedanyes
Maybe this will clarify the situation: Let's say we turned this into a
configurable behavior. What would the configuration option say? Force
user to reboot after updates - OFF/ON

Can you imagine anyone purposely setting that option to ON for their own
system? Of course not. Even people who take security updates very
seriously might have something they want to do before they restart, and
they definitely have the skill to click the restart option in the normal
menu on their own.

The current behavior is ridiculous. Please see my comment on
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-manager/+bug/917452

If you want my recommendation: Give an informational notice dialog
after installing security updates that require a reboot to take effect.
It could say something like, 'Critical security updates have been
installed, but they won't take effect until you reboot'. It should have
a single button on it - 'OK'.

I encountered a similar problem on my desktop system running 11.04 with
the nVidia proprietary driver. Using Intel DH55TC motherboard and
nVidia GTS 450 OR nVidia 9800GT (tried both). For me, the issue was
resolved through a motherboard firmware update.

[Bug 917452] Re: computer needs to restart

2012-11-05 Thread thedanyes
I'm running 12.10 and I get a message with the exact text, The computer
needs to restart to finish installing updates.

It won't let me dismiss it, the only way to make it go away is to click
the restart button or minimize it to my unity bar. Preventing a clean
close/dismissal of this dialog is potentially dangerous to my data
because now there is a restart button just hanging around that I could
accidentally activate.

I am less than impressed by this behavior. It's arrogant. It's as if
the software updater knows my current tasks are so trivial that I can
acquiese immediately to it's command to restart. The terrible update
process is one of the reasons I moved away from Windows, and it seems
that Ubuntu is starting to follow those footsteps now.

Ideally, this dialog would allow for easy dismissal without restarting.

I would also suggest there be a note in the software updater on each
package/update whose installation will necessitate a restart, that way I
can easily choose to wait to install updates for which a restart might
be warranted.

Same problem here. I'm using xine (version 1 framework version 21 is
what it says in the 'about' screen). KDE version 3.5.9 on K ubuntu
8.04. Amarok version 1.4.9.1. I have crossfading enabled and set to
500 ms and 'always'.

It happens about maybe once every 5 or 6 tracks. It starts playing a
track and then about 3-4 seconds in just skips to the next track for no
apparent reason. Its really annoying.

[Bug 77971] Re: usb flash drive not working. Lsusb hangs with no output.

2007-06-12 Thread thedanyes
This is odd because all my usb devices have been working fine up to this
point. I plugged in my two external usb drives and turned them on, then
did an 'sudo fdisk -l' to see what device labels they had been assigned
so I could mount them. They didn't show up in the fdisk list, so I ran
it a few more times, they still didn't show up. Next I ran 'lsusb' as
root, and it hung. I hit ctrl-c a couple times, waited a few minutes,
hit ctrl-z - no luck - that console never became responsive again. I
closed that console and opened another. Su'ed to root, ran 'ps aux |
grep lsusb', ran a 'kill' on the process number, it didn't die. Ran a
'kill -9' on the process number, and it still didn't die. Here is my
'ps aux | grep lsusb' output 13 minutes later:

Looking back through my dmesg, it looks like the last messages there
regarding USB are from when I had my phone plugged in to the USB and it
looks like some USB subsystem crashed:

[Bug 86680] Re: knetworkmanager stops kde applications from accessing the network

2007-05-16 Thread thedanyes
I have literally spent probably 20 hours trying to figure this problem
out. Chatting on the IRC, chatting on the qunu, reinstalling packages,
etc. I never thought to disable knetwork manager.

I'm running ubuntu 7.04, and certain parts of networking for KDE apps
fail when knetworkmanager is running. For instance: Konqueror usually
works regardless. Amarok will not upload track play information to
last.fm, kopete will not log on to MSN (but will log on to other
networks), and Kmail will not connect to my IMAP server. When I stop
knetwork manager, all these apps work fine. Here is some information
that might be helpful:

[Bug 61482] Re: KDE's System Settings: Display is useless

2007-04-15 Thread thedanyes
I have the same problem. I just (in the last 2 hours) downloaded and
installed Kubuntu 7.04 beta from the ISO, loaded the nvidia-glx drivers
from the 'add/remove programs' and then went to configure my 'graphics
display' in the 'system settings' area. I click 'administrator mode',
enter my password, and then all the buttons along the bottom are
disabled. I found a work around though. If you drag the resolution
slider around, the ok and apply buttons will enable themselves and you
can then make whatever changes you want. I haven't actually verified
that the changes are actually made to the xorg.conf file yet though.

Additional info: AMD x2 4400+ 939 with Biostar nforce4 mb and nvidia
6800 AGP and the only update I've installed to the base install of
Kubuntu so far is the nvidia video driver.

[Bug 61482] Re: KDE's System Settings: Display is useless

2007-04-15 Thread thedanyes
In addition, when I installed the nvidia binary drivers and then ran the
command specified by the package description to enable the driver, it
put a device line in my xorg.conf specifying an incorrect PCI bus
location for my video card, which caused me to not be able to get back
into X until I fixed it. There was no backup made (that I could find)
of the old xorg.conf so if I didn't know how to use lspci and sudo and
vi, this could have been a relatively major problem.
