[Bug 137514] Re: sshfs locks up randomly

2010-08-10 Thread themuddler
I have this bug with Ubuntu 10.04 exactly as described by the OP (during
heavy transfers). Killing the SSHFS process, unmounting and remounting
solves the problem but seems to crash parts of gnome (not sure which but
my theme disappears). I'm happy to help diagnose if I can and I'll try
the various suggestions mentioned in the comments above.

I have changed the status back to confirmed so that this bug isn't
overlooked because of its present status despite comments to suggest
that it's still a problem. Please accept my apologies if I've not
followed correct protocol with this change but the system appeared to
allow me to make it so I was proactive.

** Changed in: sshfs-fuse (Ubuntu)
   Status: Fix Released => Confirmed

[Bug 611081] [NEW] Banshee forces transcode for mass storage device regardless of capability

2010-07-28 Thread themuddler
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: banshee

Using a mass storage device (eg Android phone), Banshee insists on
transcoding transferred files to a nominated format even if the attached
device can read the file being transferred.

Should be an option for user to list those types supported by the
attached device (or a database of devices with supported codecs).
Banshee should then transcode anything other than these file types using
the chosen encoder.

Transcoding everything regardless of device capability is wasteful in
terms of both quality and time.

Hope that's of some help :)

** Affects: banshee (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 579804] Re: Store/read tags inside photos

2010-07-03 Thread themuddler
I share Aaron's use-case of storing the photos on my server at home.
The photos are presently tagged in Shotwell on my laptop. If my wife
wants to browse them in their organised state on her laptop, then I
either need to find a way of sharing Shotwell's db file or to host in on
the server. Alternatively, having the info stored in each photo might
do the trick but less efficiently. I'd like the option to occasionally
'update all changed meta-data' in order to ensure that my sorting isn't
lost in the future upon reinstalling etc...

Thanks for the great software.

Still a problem on Lucid RC. Could this be fixed before the final

[Bug 560530] [NEW] Main menu's submenus jump back up after scrolling down

2010-04-11 Thread themuddler
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

What happens:

Using a mouse, I enter the System, then Preferences, menu from the 'main
menu' applet in the toolbar (the compact applet which is a single ubuntu
icon - not the one with apps, places and system as separate main menus).
The height of the preferences menu exceeds the screen height so a small
triangle at the bottom allows me to scroll down if I hover over it. The
problem is, having scrolled, if I then move my mouse up to select, say,
'Startup Applications', then the menu instantly jumps back to the top.
A workaround is to select using cursor keys.

What should happen:

After scrolling down, the menu should remain at the position I leave it
once I move the mouse cursor away from the down triangle tab.

Using the 10.04 beta. Thanks!

[Bug 416668] Re: VGA-out dies after a while on Eee 900A

2009-08-22 Thread themuddler
Tested for 2 hours with Karmic Live-CD yesterday and the problem didn't
reoccur. I'd like to upgrade to Karmic and test again to see if it's a
configuration problem but I'm wary of bug #399534 which could damage my
hardware. I didn't notice that fan problem with the Live CD but will
investigate it a little more before committing to upgrading. Hopefully
I'll have some further feedback on both bugs soon.

[Bug 416668] [NEW] VGA-out dies after a while on Eee 900A

2009-08-20 Thread themuddler
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

Very similar symptoms to bug #257894 but that was closed and the
recommendations in there do not resolve the problem for me. The last
comment in that report is to file a new bug if anyone has similar
difficulties, so that's what I'm doing.

The VGA output from my Eee PC 900A goes black after a random period of
between about 20 mins and a couple of hours. Switching back to the LCD
works fine and switching back again to the VGA output does not help, it
remains black.

I have tried the suggestions in 257894 but they have not helped. I also
have another Eee PC (a 701) with the same OS and the same problem.

Thanks for your help.

[Bug 289241] Re: Gnome-panel freezes when starting an application on the secondary display

I've tried to get a backtrace as requested. When I installed the yelp-

[Bug 263889] Re: [intrepid] soundconverter always freezes after adding a file

2008-12-24 Thread themuddler
I'm also getting this. Happens on some .wma files and it freezes while
some still have the "loading tags" against them. Killing soundconverter
and restarting it gets around the problem but some files consistently
crash it. I can provide them if it helps - but they're copyrighted (by
someone else). Would it be acceptable to attach just the first portion
of the file or whichever portion is probably causing the trouble?

[Bug 224845] Re: With dual monitors (TwinView), maximized windows start up in wrong screen

2008-12-14 Thread themuddler
Experiencing the same as revgazza above with Intrepid 8.10. Note I'm
still using version 173 of the Nvidia driver due to a problem with
screen resolution on xscreen 1 with the new driver. A summary of the
behaviour I'm experiencing:

Application launched from top panel in xscreen 1 opens in xscreen 0 - bad
Application launched by association with a file-type in nautilus does the same
- bad
Launching using the console or Alt-F2 on screen 1 does open the app on screen 1
- good

Nautilus started from places menu starts on wrong screen - bad
Nautilus started from link on desktop starts on correct screen - good

VLC and Flash fullscreen mode does stay on the correct screen - good

[Bug 279222] Re: [Intrepid Beta 1] Impossible to set second screen as separate X screen using Nvidia drivers

2008-10-25 Thread themuddler
Installed the 8.10 release candidate today and met this problem (at
least I think it's this problem). On my second x screen I can move my
mouse pointer over the full screen dimensions, but the portion usable by
gnome is much smaller (see attached screenshot). This wasn't a problem
in 8.04 and is a definite regression for me. I can attach logs etc if
it will help but don't want to clutter this report unnecessarily.
Thanks.

[Bug 282655] Re: Changing volume with laptop key shortcuts and focus on second X screen causes short term crash

Just a thought. Unlike most of my icons at the top right of the screen,
the volume control appears on the second x screen whereas the rest
don't. Could the two instances of the volume control be battling over
handing the key event somehow or are keys only directed to the in-focus
screen?

[Bug 282655] [NEW] Changing volume with laptop key shortcuts and focus on second X screen causes short term crash

2008-10-13 Thread themuddler
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I have Ubuntu 8.04.1 (fully updated) running on an Asus A8SC laptop
(using Nvidia restricted drivers). When I use the laptop's shortcut to
change volume (Fn and F11/F12), both x-screens lock up and appear to
redraw all of the theme shading. This only occurs when I'm working on
the second x-server screen (dual monitor) when I make the key press, but
affects both x-servers.

I am not entirely sure which package this is disrupting so have opted
for xorg. I will gladly attach any diagnostics but I can't find
anything related in dmesg or Xorg.0.log. I have a suspicion that this
could be Compiz related as it's only the nicely-textured parts of the
x-screen that get redrawn, not the whole screen.

Please let me know how I can help further.

[Bug 250597] Re: Cannot mount ntfs partition as only writable by 1 user

2008-07-23 Thread themuddler
Thanks Szabolcs,

I will take your advice and install from source (about to have a go
now).

However, beyond my own interests: Because this could entail other
Ubuntu users inadvertently opening up partitions they thought were
protected, should the newer ntfs-3g driver be incorporated into Ubuntu's
regular security updates?

[Bug 250597] Re: Cannot mount ntfs partition as only writable by 1 user

2008-07-22 Thread themuddler
The problem isn't that not-even-one can write, but that any user can
read/write when it's supposed to be accessible by just 1 user (the
owner).

Using the 'no_def_opts' option, which removes 'allow_other', does
prevent all users (except the mounting user) having access, but this
isn't the ideal solution (it's no good for group permissions or allowing
others read-only etc).

I'm afraid that your solution of recompiling fuse from source is a
little beyond me.

Chris, is this likely to be solved in future ubuntu updates?

My kernel is 2.6.24-19-generic and I update daily. Any other info that
might help?

[Bug 250597] Re: Cannot mount ntfs partition as only writable by 1 user

2008-07-21 Thread themuddler
Given the disparity here between permissions and access, I thought I had
better mark this as a security vulnerability. Please change this if
that's inappropriate. Thanks.

[Bug 250597] Re: Cannot mount ntfs partition as only writable by 1 user

2008-07-21 Thread themuddler
Thanks for the swift reply.

Yes. When logged in as 'guest', I can cd into '/media/FILES', ls, read
and write. That's what's causing me concern. 'ls -l' inside
/media/FILES gives me a full list of the contents, which also have the
same permissions (drwx--). Does that clarify the issue?

[Bug 250597] [NEW] Cannot mount ntfs partition as only writable by 1 user

2008-07-21 Thread themuddler
Public bug reported:

I am attempting to mount an ntfs partition as rw by uid 1000 ('mud') and
unreadable by all others. I have used the following mount command:

"sudo mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sde1 /media/FILES -o
rw,nosuid,nodev,noatime,uid=1000,umask=077"

'ls -l /media' as another user ('guest') gives:

"drwx-- 1 mud root 16384 2008-07-06 22:42 FILES"

which appear to be the correct permissions; *but allow that user (which
isn't 'mud') to browse, read and write to the partition*

'mount' gives:

"/dev/sde1 on /media/FILES type fuseblk
(rw,nosuid,nodev,noatime,allow_other,default_permissions,blksize=512)"

When I use 'no_def_opts' in the following mount command to remove the default
'allow_other' option:

"sudo mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sde1 /media/FILES -o
rw,nosuid,nodev,noatime,uid=1000,umask=077,no_def_opts"

I lose access to the partition by all users but root. Please forgive my
ignorance if this is not a bug, and change it into a question for me.

Thanks.

[Bug 84782] Re: slow samba transfer speed to/from windows machines

2008-07-05 Thread themuddler
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 46081 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/46081

I have samba 3.0.28a on ubuntu 8.04 on two machines, a desktop and a
laptop. The desktop is connected by ethernet to a wireless router and
the laptop connects wirelessly to that router at 54MBps. I share
directories from the desktop to the laptop via samba to maintain
compatibility if I need to boot into windows. Unfortunately, I have a
maximum transfer rate of 10Mbps when moving files in nautilus. I do not
expect my hard drives or network hardware to be limiting this and have
no problem with internet speeds. Is it possible to setup a linux-style
network in parallel with samba sharing for the time being?

[Bug 210543] Re: Suspend to disk fails on Asus A8N-E

2008-06-15 Thread themuddler
I have exactly the same symptoms with kernel 2.6.24-18 on Hardy with an
Asus A8SC (though I haven't investigated in as much depth). If I can be
of help then please let me know - I'll subscribe to this bug report.

[Bug 34514] Re: gnome-volume-control crashes

2008-06-10 Thread themuddler
Think this might be the same bug. When I use 2 X screens through using
2 monitors on the proprietary nvidia driver the volume control
reproducibly crashes every time I use the laptop hotkeys to adjust the
volume. I'm not sure if it's because there are two instances and they
fight over the hotkey or if it's related to this. The applet then gives
me the choice of whether to restart. On occasion, other applets have
crashed too (only when using 2 X Screens). Please tell me if I need to
open it as a new bug. Thanks. (Hardy, Asus A8 laptop)
