[Bug 1310058] Re: ecryptfs-setup-swap hints after reboot

2014-04-21 Thread tlu
I had the same problem after installing Kubuntu 14.04 64bit. During the
installation process I mounted an existing home partition encrypted with
ecryptfs. Result: The swap partition was not available/mounted. After
manually implementing syscon-hh's solution in the first post, all is
well.

[Bug 1310058] Re: ecryptfs-setup-swap hints after reboot

2014-04-21 Thread tlu
I should have added that sudo blkid reported a different UUID for the
swap partition than the one used in /etc/crypttab. Replacing that one
with the UUID reported by blkid did not solve the problem.

Nobody? Really?

I mean, Kubuntu 12.04 is an LTS version, too. That a (semi-)official
upgrade suggestion dismantles it and nobody seems to care, is rather
weird, IMO.

BTW: Other Ubuntu flavours like Xubuntu, Lubuntu etc. might also be
affected although I haven't checked that.

Only if I *manually* add libgl1-mesa-glx-lts-quantal :

... kubuntu-desktop etc. won't be removed.

Jamie, now I'm confused. As a matter of fact,
/etc/apparmor.d/local/usr.sbin.cupsd here is completely empty.

And, yes, I commented out

in /etc/apparmor.d/usr.sbin.cupsd in order to avoid this bug. I noticed
that it was shown in the attachment under ##included
local/usr.sbin.cupsd - but again, /etc/apparmor.d/local/usr.sbin.cupsd
is empty on my system.

[Bug 1052098] Re: AppArmor parser error for /etc/apparmor.d/usr.sbin.cupsd

2012-09-18 Thread tlu
I think I found the culprit: I was modifying an AppArmor profile for
Thunderbird. When I executed aa-logprof, I got the following message:

Enforce-mode changes:

Profile:/usr/sbin/cupsd

Capability: block_suspend

Severity: unexpected capability rank input: CAP_BLOCK_SUSPEND

If you select Allow, you will run into the problem mentioned above.

I've no idea why creating/modifying a Thunderbird profile affects the
cupsd profile and why that capability is added.

[Bug 1052098] [NEW] AppArmor parser error for /etc/apparmor.d/usr.sbin.cupsd

2012-09-17 Thread tlu
Public bug reported:

My HP printer suddenly didn't work anymore, and /var/log/syslog reported

I decided to reinstall cups and hplip and got the following error
messages:

AppArmor parser error for /etc/apparmor.d/usr.sbin.cupsd in

... and:

capability block_suspend,

hplip was successful and my printer works again.

[Bug 712584] Re: Firefox-4.0: AppArmor blocks access to nvidia devices

2011-05-14 Thread tlu
Jamie, why don't you want to add these devices? I mean most Nvidia card
users should be affected by this problem. But not all of them are able
to debug AppArmor and to edit the related profile - they would probably
chose to NOT use this FF profile at all. I'm not sure if that's really
what we want. And adding these devices would not open a new security
hole (compared to not using the profile) as anybody has read/write
permission for these files anyhow.

So quite frankly I don't really understand your rationale.

profile=/usr/lib/firefox-4.0-4.0b12prefirefox{,*[^s][^h]}
name=/dev/nvidiactl pid=2996 comm=firefox-4.0-bin requested_mask=rw
denied_mask=rw fsuid=1000 ouid=0

on certain websites, e.g., http://bodybrowser.googlelabs.com. On that website
the images were not displayed until I added

/dev/nvidiactl rw,
/dev/nvidia0 rw,

to the usr.bin.firefox-4.0 profile.

Since I cannot imagine that this is specific to my system (I guess it
has something to do with hardware acceleration, and a similar problem
might exist for AMD cards) I suggest to add this to that profile by
default.

Note that after adding above lines to the profile I still got errors
like:

type=1400 audit(1296749585.779:69): apparmor=DENIED operation=open
parent=1 profile=/usr/lib/firefox-4.0-4.0b12pre/firefox{,*[^s][^h]}
name=/proc/interrupts pid=3035 comm=firefox-4.0-bin
requested_mask=r denied_mask=r fsuid=1000 ouid=0

although I couldn't notice any further problems. Nevertheless it might
make sense to also add

/proc/interrupts r,

to the profile.

[Bug 455112] Re: VirtualBox performance is much worse when Intel VT-x is enabled

2009-11-02 Thread tlu
@Michał Gołębiowski: I can confirm that this problem didn't exist in
Jaunty where Virtualbox ran very well with SMP (2 cpus) enabled (and, of
course, VT-x which is required for SMP). I have an Intel Core2Duo E8400
with 3 GHz.

Now under Karmic the situation is considerably worse: With SMP enabled,
VB runs very slowly on my machine. Going back to 1 cpu and leaving VT-x
enabled improves the performance a bit (but still not comparable with
Jaunty), and disabling VT-x makes it worse again.

So something has changed in Karmic under the hood and not for the better
...

[Bug 455112] Re: VirtualBox performance is much worse when Intel VT-x is enabled

2009-11-02 Thread tlu
I forgot to mention one thing: In the Virtualbox forums there are some
posters who wrote that installing the real time kernel (incl. headers)
improved the performance of Virtualbox considerably. I tried, and it
didn't make a difference for me. But it might be worth a try for others.
(Note, however, that the real time kernel is a universe package -
personally I don't want to have the kernel of all packages from the
universe repos.) Nevertheless the positive experience by the above
mentioned users suggests that the problem might be kernel related.

[Bug 409559] Re: version 1.6.0_15 is available

2009-08-22 Thread tlu
Yes, it's more than sad. It's rather a breach of trust. Is there another
way to ring the alarm bell?

Pjotr is right that this is a structural problem. Considering the
subscribers to this bug, I wonder why his posting in the MOTU list was
even necessary.

And I'm beginning to wonder how many other packages that aren't that
prominent like the java one have security leaks that have not been
patched, either. I mean, if such a serious bug is neglected (against
better judgement) everything is possible.

[Bug 409559] Re: version 1.6.0_15 is available

2009-08-22 Thread tlu
@Matthias Klose: It must be possible to critisize something without
being a developer. IMO, it's a breach of trust from a user's
perspective. Why?

1. A patch is available for Karmic (and in some ppa's). Even without being a
developer, I cannot imagine that it's so difficult to provide a patched version
for other Ubuntu versions too.
2. Ubuntu has always been promoted as a safe OS that patches security leaks as
fast as possible. But now we have a situation where a package with a serious
leak has not been patched for several weeks although it's used by hundreds of
thousands of users.
3. Nobody said that you, Matthias, or somebody else is the culprit. But if the
Ubuntu Security Team and others are subscribed to this bug which has been open
for weeks and there is still no reaction, something is terribly wrong. That's
what Pjotr meant when he was talking about a structural problem. Is it a lack
of manpower?

Considering all these facts, you should not be too astonished that
someone who's been a convinced Ubuntu advocate for years is becoming
more and more irritated.

2009-08-18 Thread tlu
@Pjotr: Couldn't agree more. This is a disaster from a security
viewpoint. We're always telling Windows users that they need something
like Secunia PSI to make sure that they will keep their applications
updated. And we're telling them: Switch to Ubuntu, and you won't have
this problem. - And now this disaster for such a widely used package
(thanks Johan for the figures). Pjotr is right that this seems to be a
structural problem. I'm anxious to see the reaction on MOTU.

[Bug 411733] Re: sun-java6 should be updated to 6u15

2009-08-14 Thread tlu
I agree with xor. The java packages are critical applications used by
many people. Not applying the updates that fix their vulnerabilities in
due time undermines the reputation of Ubuntu as a secure operating
system. Fixing them only in Karmic is definitely not enough. And the
solution proposed by James Stansell is surely not suitable for the
ordinary user (who doesn't know about this problem in the first place).
