[Bug 1327300] Re: Regression in commit 8e4e453d548e3c24e9070eda23c52f210951b921

2014-06-12 Thread tmstaedt
This bug is awaiting verification that the kernel in -proposed solves the
problem. Please test the kernel and update this bug with the results. If the
problem is solved, change the tag 'verification-needed-lucid' to
'verification-done-lucid'.

If verification is not done by 5 working days from today, this fix will be
dropped from the source code, and this bug will be closed.

See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how to
enable and use -proposed. Thank you!

 tags: added: verification-needed-lucid

All right, I just installed the kernel from lucid-proposed and it would come up
okay. Could log on into GNOME desktop and things appear to
be working normal, just like with previous kernel updates!

  might possibly need LTS for?

You seem to have misunderstood what LTS means. LTS does not mean feel
free to run this OS indefinitely, without upgrading, and expect to continue
to receive support from the Ubuntu community. The 10.04 LTS desktop
packages - which *definitely* include firefox - were only supported until
April 2013. Anyone running a desktop environment on top of 10.04 is using
software that has not been receiving critical security updates for over a
 year.

So no, you should not expect Ubuntu developers to go out of their way to
enable you to continue running in a configuration which we do not endorse.
Any desktop-affecting regressions in the kernel security update are
certainly unintentional, but if they only affect no-longer-supported desktop
packages, it is not a critical regression.

Hmm. But you withdrew that kernel update for 10.04, i.e. the 10.04
update-manager does not show that new kernel version as an update
anymore.
And you continue to deliver critical security fixes to this unsupported
10.04 release for a while, right?
Well, then you should also try to fix these issues in due time or at
least give clear advice what sysadmins or experienced users can do get
things working again.
Or stop updating the kernel for 10.04 all together!

Sure; the solution is to upgrade to a supported version of the Ubuntu
desktop packages, 12.04 LTS (or 14.04 LTS).

...which will potentially break existing software which had been running
stably for a long time and had many happy users.
... and has a little blackmailing momentum in it, doesn't it?

[Bug 1327014] Re: Linux kernel 2.6.32-61 hangs gnome desktop on ubuntu 10.04 lucid lynx

2014-06-09 Thread tmstaedt
Lucid Desktop reached EOL on May 9, 2013.

I know that. Canonical still delivers critical security patches for
10.04, though.

Please upgrade to the latest version and re-test.

I just started update-manager and there was no new kernel available (Di 10. Jun
00:32:23 CEST 2014), only some updates
for libxml2, which I installed.

[Bug 1165296] [NEW] import in sqlite manager extension not working anymore and classic compact theme not working after upgrade to version 20 from 19 on ubuntu 10.04

2013-04-05 Thread tmstaedt
Public bug reported:

Don't know if it's a bug, but certainly the transitions from earlier versions
of firefox on ubuntu 10.04 were smooth.
Just scanning the long list of fixes in version 20 for the latest package, I
suspect, there were a few to drastic changes.

Yep. Import does not work anymore. Rated 5 out of 5 stars

by Thomas Mittelstaedt on April 5, 2013 · permalink

Also another extension woud not work anymore.

I brutally downgraded firefox to version 19 on ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) by
uninstalling firefox via synaptic and directly installing packages from
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/f/firefox/:

firefox_19.0.2+build1-0ubuntu0.10.04.1_i386.deb
firefox-locale-de_19.0.2+build1-0ubuntu0.10.04.1_i386.deb
firefox-locale-en_19.0.2+build1-0ubuntu0.10.04.1_i386.deb

plus the one for gnome support
firefox-gnome-support_19.0.2+build1-0ubuntu0.10.04.1_i386.deb
firefox-gnome-support_19.0.2+build1-0ubuntu0.10.04.1_i386.deb

and it worked. Firefox seems to be okay

[Bug 532176] Re: WindowMaker crashed with SIGSEGV

2012-03-04 Thread tmstaedt
Just compiled the latest version and set an alarm in evolution, which
triggered. I then used the desktop button. And there
happened no crash.
I haven't used window maker for quite some time. I use metacity, because it has
the nice feature of being able to switch between
windows of one particular application using a configurable keyboard shortcut,
which I could not find in WindowMaker.
I can remember I also had problems with occasional crashes when using Mod-H to
hide all windows of an application.
Hope that helps,
thomas

I also had this problem of occasional hangs during boot, when networking is

The hangs still occurred, even though I disabled samba via update-rc.d. Found
out that samba-related

[Bug 498544] Re: searching backward in selection, having selected a column, does not find the last item, but the next one

2010-05-21 Thread tmstaedt
Having put the cursor in an empty cell in the last row, I select a column,
bring up the search dialog via Ctrl-f, type in the search
term and choose from the other options to search backwards. The search term
is found but not the final occurrence but the one
 that would be next.

Well, I think, I understand now why the above happens: Even though I put the
cursor in the last row, when I select the whole
column, the selected cell changes to the first visible cell in this column and
the search backwards action searches from
that point on, correctly, but not necessarily, that the user expects.
So, I suggest, to close this bug and - maybe - add a note in the documentation
for that search in selection only-functionality.

Regards,
thomas

[Bug 528726] [NEW] firefox crashed in IA__g_type_check_instance_cast

2010-02-26 Thread tmstaedt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.5

I don't exactly remember what I was doing except that I entered a url for a pdf
document and firefox wanted to open adobe
and complained that it's not installed. Anyway, apport came up here on ubuntu
linux 9.10 karmic and collected a hell
lot of data and sent it over.
I reopened the crash with apport-retrace and an interactive gdb session. Here
is the stack trace, hope that helps.

I might add that I have selected the column and the search dialog would
automatically select 'only in selection'.
If I do a normal search, without having selected the column, the search brings
up the final item correctly.

[Bug 273733] Re: evolution does not index the Sent folder

2008-09-24 Thread tmstaedt
Actually, the workaround did not do it either. What is strange that the mail is
found if I click on a folder in the account where the folder with the mail in
question is, in this case the local mail. When I search and chose Current
Account, the mail is found, if I chose All accounts the mail is not found.
But that only happens with the mail in a folder which I configured to be the
one where sent mails go.
A different mail not in the Sent folder, is found searching all accounts.

[Bug 273733] Re: evolution does not index the Sent folder

2008-09-24 Thread tmstaedt
There is another glitch connected to the above. If I create a Search
folder and choose All local and active remote folders and search for a
term in the message body, the mail in the Sent folder is not found. If I
select Specific folders and choose the Sent folder, the mail is found.
If I then edit the search folder properties again and switch back to
All local and active remote folders, the mail is still found!

[Bug 273733] [NEW] evolution does not index the Sent folder

2008-09-23 Thread tmstaedt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

evolution does not find a term contained in the body of a message in the Sent
folder.
the workaround was to create a new folder for sent messages and then configure
this folder to be the Sent-items folder for all my mail accounts. Then a sent
message goes there and is indexed, while the default sent folder somehow is not.

thomas
