The same:

As far as zero byte files goes, I found the following:

$ mount | grep crypt
/home/tobuntu/.Private on /home/toobuntu type ecryptfs
(ecryptfs_sig=[sanitized],ecryptfs_fnek_sig=[sanitized],ecryptfs_cipher=aes,ecryptfs_key_bytes=16)

Hmm, here are some examples:
$ ls -lAhS | tail -n 5

[Bug 368297] Re: Pandora Does not create Sound Release 2.0.x worked ok, release 3.0.9 does not work

2009-07-14 Thread toobuntu
The pandora package in ubuntu is a "GIMP Plugin that arranges images for
creation of panoramic images. Pandora uses gradients, and overlays to
blend the images, allowing a seamless appearance."

You seem to be referring to the pandora website for creating custom
radio stations. I think pandora uses flash, so the choice of package
was incorrect. Marking invalid as to the pandora package in ubuntu.

[Bug 401468] [NEW] wishlist: eog, set default file path

2009-07-19 Thread toobuntu
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: eog

When opening pictures to view in eog, eye of gnome, the file chooser
defaults to the user's home directory. Given that this is an app for
viewing pictures, it would be preferable, and a usability improvement,
to default to the user's "Pictures" directory within their home folder.

There does not seem to be a preference setting for this within eog
itself nor in gconf.

[Bug 386150] Re: Nautilus file browser toolbar is complicated, redundant, and ugly

2009-07-20 Thread toobuntu
To those who advocate removing the 'up' button: I disagree. It was
removed in Windows Vista, and someone had to make a shareware app to put
it back in. There are those of us who think linearly, and who use the
location bar by default. For us, it is a lot faster to use the up
button than to use breadcrumbs (which does not fit with the way our
minds work).

Please include a preference option for it to be put back in. Even
better, allow full customization of the toolbar like Firefox does.

[Bug 323587] [NEW] launchpad causes high CPU utilization with, and eventually crashes of, epiphany-browser and firefox-3.0

2009-01-31 Thread toobuntu
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

launchpad causes high CPU utilization with, and eventually crashes of,
epiphany-browser and firefox-3.0

[Also reported as a bug against epiphany-browser in Bug #323582]

I've had one or two PPA '+archive' pages open in each of epiphany-
browser and firefox-3.0 in intrepid for weeks now, although any
launchpad page will do. I either lock screen or sleep when away,
usually lock screen. CPU would always be at around 45% with those pages
loaded, with epiphany-browser and firefox as the top two processes.
edge.launchpad.net made no difference as opposed to launchpad.net.
Eventually, the CPU would climb all the way up to 90% and sit there for
a while, then go up to 100% and crash the browsers. It takes days until
the browsers will actually crash, though. Epiphany crashes first; it
seems to be significantly more affected by this than does Firefox.

With all launchpad pages closed, and all of the 8 browser windows with a
sum total of 64 tabs still open, CPU hovers at 10% (+/- 1%). I should
add that the machine was otherwise idle most of the time both when the
launchpad pages were loaded and after I closed them. Only had mrxvt
running screen, but all terminal emulator tabs were sitting idle, and
also sometimes ran liferea and pidgin or irssi, pcmanfm at times, and
evince and epdfview at times, too.

[Bug 323606] [NEW] Processes remain after log off, sometimes preventing further graphical logins

2009-01-31 Thread toobuntu
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gvfs-fuse

This bug is being filed pursuant to the instructions of Sebastien
Bacher, who advised: "the issue is not a gdm one, you should rather open
bugs for buggy servers which don't have a bug open yet"

[Similar bugs filed against: libbonobo (Bug #323604), evolution-data-
server (Bug #323607), and gconf (Bug #323608)]

After logging out of a GNOME session, processes owned by the now-logged-
out user still remain and interfere with subsequent logons.

e.g.

toobu...@uw1:~$ w
 11:20:37 up 2 days, 20:29, 1 user, load average: 0.04, 0.16, 0.17
USER TTY FROM LOGIN@ IDLE JCPU PCPU WHAT
toobuntu pts/0 uw5.local Fri17 0.00s 0.22s 0.00s w

toobu...@uw1:~$ ps U ed
  PID TTY STAT TIME COMMAND
20305 ? Ssl 0:00 /usr/lib/bonobo-activation/bonobo-activation-server -
20334 ? Ss 0:00 /usr/lib/gvfs//gvfs-fuse-daemon /home/ed/.gvfs
20404 ? Sl 0:00 /usr/lib/evolution/evolution-data-server-2.22 --oaf-a
21510 ? S 0:00 /usr/lib/libgconf2-4/gconfd-2 11

It seems that these processes are called by GDM, so a GDM restart gets
us to a clean slate again. But these processes should, in and of
themselves, know to terminate upon user log off. See a fuller discussion
re: cleaning of GNOME processes at logoff at the link I posted here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-
session/+bug/49594/comments/33

WORKAROUND - have GDM kill all processes owned by the user logging out
by adding a line to /etc/gdm/PostSession/Default

$ ls /etc/gdm/PostSession/
Default

$ tail /etc/gdm/PostSession/Default
fi
  done
  IFS=$OLD_IFS
  echo "$OUTPUT"
}

# kill straggler processes after logout (LP: #236210)
pkill -u "${USER}"

exit 0

-
FYI- From http://www.gnome.org/projects/gdm/docs/2.14/configuration.html :

When the user terminates his session, the PostSession script will be
run. Again operation is similar to Init, PostLogin and PreSession. Again
the script will be run with root privileges, the slave daemon will block
and the $USER environment variable will contain the name of the user who
just logged out and $DISPLAY will be set to the display the user used,
however note that the X server for this display may already be dead and
so you shouldn't try to access it. Also $X_SERVERS environmental
variable is set and this points to a fake generated X servers file for
use with the sessreg accounting application.

Note that the PostSession script will be run even when the display fails to
respond due to an I/O error or similar. Thus, there is no guarantee that X
applications will work during script execution.

After logging out of a GNOME session, processes owned by the now-logged-
out user still remain and interfere with subsequent logons.

e.g.

toobu...@uw1:~$ w
 11:20:37 up 2 days, 20:29, 1 user, load average: 0.04, 0.16, 0.17
USER TTY FROM LOGIN@ IDLE JCPU PCPU WHAT
toobuntu pts/0 uw5.local Fri17 0.00s 0.22s 0.00s w

toobu...@uw1:~$ ps U ed
  PID TTY STAT TIME COMMAND
20305 ? Ssl 0:00 /usr/lib/bonobo-activation/bonobo-activation-server -
20334 ? Ss 0:00 /usr/lib/gvfs//gvfs-fuse-daemon /home/ed/.gvfs
20404 ? Sl 0:00 /usr/lib/evolution/evolution-data-server-2.22 --oaf-a
21510 ? S 0:00 /usr/lib/libgconf2-4/gconfd-2 11

It seems that these processes are called by GDM, so a GDM restart gets
us to a clean slate again. But these processes should, in and of
themselves, know to terminate upon user log off. See a fuller discussion
re: cleaning of GNOME processes at logoff at the link I posted here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-
session/+bug/49594/comments/33

WORKAROUND - have GDM kill all processes owned by the user logging out
by adding a line to /etc/gdm/PostSession/Default

$ ls /etc/gdm/PostSession/
Default

$ tail /etc/gdm/PostSession/Default
fi
  done
  IFS=$OLD_IFS
  echo "$OUTPUT"
}

[Bug 236210] Re: Processes remain after log off

2009-01-31 Thread toobuntu
2009-01-31 update - I just filed separate bugs against the following:
libbonobo (Bug #323604)
gvfs (Bug #323606)
evolution-data-server (Bug #323607)
gconf (Bug #323608)

If you still experience this issue with any of these, then please
confirm those bugs so this issue can be fixed properly. In the
meantime, there is an easy workaround listed in those bug reports that I
don't see why it couldn't be adopted by Ubuntu as a default. There
seems to be no harm done, and it solves this problem for all aberrant
processes.

[Bug 49594] Re: Bonobo-activation-server sometimes is not killed after session restart, leading to many unexpected problems

2009-01-31 Thread toobuntu
2009-01-31 update - I just filed separate bugs about this issue against
the following pursuant to the instructions of Sebastien Bacher, who
advised: "the issue is not a gdm one, you should rather open bugs for
buggy servers which don't have a bug open yet"
(https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/236210/comments/10):

libbonobo (Bug #323604)
gvfs (Bug #323606)
evolution-data-server (Bug #323607)
gconf (Bug #323608)

If you still experience this issue with any of these, then please
confirm those bugs so this issue can be fixed properly. In the
meantime, there is an easy workaround listed in those bug reports that I
don't see why it couldn't be adopted by Ubuntu, indeed even GNOME (GDM),
as a default. There seems to be no harm done, and it solves this
problem for all aberrant processes.

[Bug 323606] Re: Processes remain after log off, sometimes preventing further graphical logins

2009-02-22 Thread toobuntu
Well, I have not tested _every_ time a user logs off, but the short
answer is yes. Although I no longer have access to the network where I
first discovered this issue, my recollection is that processes remain
every time a user logs off. If not every time, then nearly every time.
The remaining processes do not interfere with subsequent logins every
time, though. Only sometimes. I have not yet been able to determine
what exactly is preventing a subsequent login, but in a corporate
environment this has to be addressed without the need to call a
technician, hence the /etc/gdm/PostSession/Default modification.

I noticed that most of my other bug reports about this issue were
closed, even though I was simply following specific instructions to file
those reports. Are the other aberrant processes indeed being looked at
so this issue can be fixed?

[Bug 332890] [NEW] screen-profiles continues to show package updates (red section) even after they are installed

2009-02-22 Thread toobuntu
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: screen-profiles

I am thrilled with the work Dustin Kirkland has done to provide useful
screen profiles. One of the features is that the hardstatus line on the
bottom will show the number of available package updates in white text
against a red background.

After manually installing all available updates via aptitude full-
upgrade, that status does not change until apt-check is called again.
>From perusing the updates-available script in /usr/share/screen-
profiles/bin/, it seems that it will update hourly.

Could a hook be added to dpkg or a postinstall preference configured for
apt that would run updates-available / apt-check and clear the status
contemporaneously with the update?

[Bug 328536] Re: confusing scrollbar behavior in gnome-terminal when using screen-profiles

2009-02-22 Thread toobuntu
FYI - When using mrxvt or aterm, I am only able to scrollback by using
screen's scrollback mode (F7). The mrxvt and aterm scrollbars I have
configured are deactivated in essence. When I try Shift-PageUp/Dn all I
get is gibberish on the screen in mrxvt and nothing at all in aterm.

mrxvt:
Shift-PageUp = 2~
Shift-PageDn = ;2~

Separately, F2 in aterm does nothing. F2 in mrxvt does not give me a
new screen window, either. Rather, it seems to generate a carriage
return followed by a capital A on the new line:

$
$ A

Because I followed Nick Barcet's ideas about changing the escape key to
w and modded the caption and hardstatus lines (I prefer cyan text
against a black background), I am attaching my .screenrc.

Finally, and I know this is not really the proper place to mention
it...but...couldn't all the dot files be neatened up in a .screen/
directory?

[Bug 211631] Re: CIFS/SMBFS shares not unmounted before network is shut down

2009-03-06 Thread toobuntu
@Thierry Carrez:

For use case #3, isn't that what the '_netdev' mount option is for? In
my fstab, I always use '_netdev' for a network share; I think RedHat
considers it a best practice. One could also combine that with 'noauto'
and 'user'. The problem with gvfs-smb mounts is that non-gvfs aware
apps would not have access to the network filesystem.

In my setup, I also use gid=100 to mount network filesystems for all
users (gid=100). I do have the timeout issue on runlevels 0 and 6, of
course.

[Bug 336136] [NEW] gnome-panel crashed with signal 5 in _XError()

2009-02-28 Thread toobuntu
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

I didn't notice any crash, but apport popped up with this bug report.
It happened after I added four weather panel applets to the top panel.
After setting the locations, if I hovered over the icon it would show
the wrong city. So I logged out and back in, and that's when apport
wanted to report a gnome-panel crash. The panels are currently showing,
so maybe it is referring to when I logged out.

[Bug 323606] Re: Processes remain after log off, sometimes preventing further graphical logins

2009-04-06 Thread toobuntu
I just did some testing this weekend on my laptop, and indeed I did not
find gvfs (or any other) processes remaining after log off in jaunty. I
cannot give a more complete answer than that, though, as I no longer
have access to the original network with mounted cifs shares, use cases,
etc., etc., where this behavior was originally observed.

+ After installation, update-manager displays icon on top panel with a

+ Feisty after aptitude upgraded vmware-server from v1.0.3 to v1.0.4. In
+ Feisty, this behavior occurred even though vmware-server was

[Bug 173261] vmware server installation from partners repository in gutsy gives several errors related to xinetd, vmmon, vmauthd, and update-manager

2007-12-01 Thread toobuntu
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: vmware-server

Installed vmware-server package from the Canonical partners repository
for Gutsy.

See the "IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR XINETD USERS" and messages about
vmnet module, Virtual machine monitor, and Virtual ethernet failing or
not being loaded below, near the bottom of this post.

After installation, update-manager displays icon on top panel with a
message that there is 1 update available, and aptitude attempts to
"safe-upgrade" the vmware-server package from the same version to the
same version. This behavior does not cease and also occurred for me in
Feisty after aptitude upgraded vmware-server from v1.0.3 to v1.0.4. In
Feisty, this behavior occurred even though vmware-server was
successfully installed, upgraded, and suitable for production use.

[Bug 79352] Re: 'firefox -install-global-extension "extension_location"' does not work

2007-12-04 Thread toobuntu
This problem still exists for me in Gutsy. Agreed that sudo is a
feature, but how does this play out with individual user's prefs and
customizations of the extensions?

Anyway, only two extensions installed globally with correct permissions
for me in Gutsy. The others installed correctly to /usr/lib but with
incorrect permissions for use by a non-root user. Manually adjusting
the permissions did not make the extensions usable for non-root user,
either. If this is an error in the extension maintainer's packaging,
then it seems like a bit of a nightmare to get fixed. Can anyone
provide more info about what's at play?

The 'lack of useful output' is IMO something that should be corrected.

[Bug 173261] Re: vmware server installation from partners repository in gutsy generates several errors related to xinetd, vmnet, vmmon, vmware-authd, and update-manager

2007-12-18 Thread toobuntu
Update:

I am heartened by the lack of any response here from a developer that
the crew is quite busy preparing for Hardy or is otherwise occupied.

By way of an update, I was thinking the vmnet error could either be due
to a faulty kernel module or to the defaults in the config-network
script as in https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/112492. All previous
attempts to install vmware-server were on a Sony Vaio laptop with only
the wireless interface active at the time (eth1); eth0 (wired) was
simply not plugged in. So I brought my laptop to the office, plugged in
the wire and left wireless active as well. Still no go. Then I
rebooted from the realtime kernel into the generic kernel, and the
installation succeeded.

Please note, however, that the package description for vmware-server-
kernel-modules-2.6.22-14 states the following: "All supported kernel
types for this architecture are included in this single package." Also,
installing vmware-server-kernel-modules in the lowlatency kernel in
Feisty did not cause this error; the installation completed
successfully,

[Bug 212292] Re: conky crashed with SIGSEGV in __overflow()

2008-04-05 Thread toobuntu
The two problems mentioned in bug #211863 were closing a console window
from which conky was invoked and the presence of conflicting variables.
Neither of these two problems apply here. It's simply that conky does
not properly respond to a SIGHUP anymore.

"killall conky && conky -db" works just fine, but "killall -SIGUSR1
conky" - which is supposed to effectively accomplish the same result by
reloading .conkyrc - caused conky to crash. It doesn't always cause
apport to create a report, but it does segfault.

$ killall -SIGUSR1 conky
Conky: received SIGHUP or SIGUSR1. reloading the config file.

[2]+ Segmentation fault (core dumped) conky

[Bug 202954] [NEW] firefox-3.0 received an X Window System error: BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)

2008-03-16 Thread toobuntu
Public bug reported:

The program 'firefox' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'.
  (Details: serial 488978 error_code 11 request_code 53 minor_code 0)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

2008-03-17 Thread toobuntu
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 186323 ***

Why is a bug report about a music player app marked private? I have
been denied access to that bug report #186323 which I was trying to
check in order to confirm whether the scenario reported there is similar
and is indeed a duplicate.

Requesting that someone with access contact the OP of #186323 so status
can be changed to public.

[Bug 203382] [NEW] compiz.real crashed with SIGSEGV

2008-03-17 Thread toobuntu
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

Fresh install of Hardy Alpha 5 landed me in a desktop with no gnome-
panel; I had thought that gnome-panel was the culprit until doing an
update and full-upgrade from the console tty1, rebooting, and apport
reporting to me that compiz.real had previously crashed. Ctrl-Alt-
Backspace to restart X prior to the full-upgrade did not fix the
problem. Alt-F2 was also unresponsive; the tty consoles were all that I
had available to me, although Ctrl-Alt-Del did produce the familiar GUI
dialog box with the options to lock the screen, reboot, log out, shut
down, etc.

Installed on a Dell Optiplex GX380

Thought the following info might be useful since I see (seemingly
unrelated) mention of the graphics card in the pm-utils changelog.
Could this be an unintended effect of the quirk ignore?

[Bug 205224] Re: power management: put display to sleep not functional after latest pm-utils and hal updates

2008-03-23 Thread toobuntu
Not a suspend/hibernate issue (actually, I have not attempted either
since the updates). This occurs (or does not occur) when trying to put
the display to sleep. I set a inactivity timeout of 18 min to put
display to sleep in gnome-power-preferences, but it no longer does so.
Screensaver is set to blank the screen after 8 min, and I see the whole
display sort of flash at the 18 min mark, but it stays in the blank
screensaver mode and does not power off any more since the update.

[Bug 205224] Re: power management: put display to sleep not functional after latest pm-utils, hal and acpi-support updates

2008-03-24 Thread toobuntu
I was trying to add Ubuntu packages acpi-support (noticed that it was
also updated recently) and gnome-power-manager as possible targets for
this bug, but I don't seem to be able to figure out how to do that in
launchpad. Apologies for subscribing upstream without consulting
anyone.

Can anyone help? Do I need to file a new bug report, then?

[Bug 206589] [NEW] nautilus crashed with SIGSEGV in g_type_interface_get_plugin()

2008-03-25 Thread toobuntu
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Fully up to date Hardy beta as of 25-Mar-2008. Was burning an iso to CD
with Brasero, CD ejected and Brasero asked me to reinsert it in order to
verify the md5sum. When a CD is inserted, Nautilus pops open a window.
Apport reported a Nautilus crash, but the Nautilus window was still open
(perhaps another one? I was actually away from my desk at the time of
the crash).

These options don't seem to exist any more in FF3b4 in Hardy. What to do?

K14 would be better as there is also an S15wpa-ifupdown).

[Bug 211860] [NEW] rdesktop causes sticky Shift sometimes, Ctrl-Shift is fickle

2008-04-04 Thread toobuntu
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rdesktop

On a fully up to date Hardy Beta as of 04-Apr-2008, we are using
WordPerfect in an rdesktop session to W2k3 Std R2 SP2 terminal server.

When clicking in a document, on occasion, the text will be highlighted
in the manner it would be had the Shift key been depressed when
clicking. This annoys users very much. We have not observed any
predictable cause for invoking this behavior.

Also, in WordPerfect a Ctrl-Shift-V is supposed to paste text without
their font/attribute information (i.e. as plain text), but this
keystroke combination is not always received/honored from an rdesktop
session. Again, it does work sometimes and not others, and so far we
have not observed any predictable cause for invoking this behavior.
Sometimes, instead of click-drag highlighting a block of text from left-
to-right but doing so from right-to-left will make it work, but not
always. This did not occur in Gutsy.

[Bug 208248] [NEW] printing in firefox-3.0b4 (Hardy) produces white gaps between letters near right margin

2008-03-28 Thread toobuntu
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

When printing a web page in Firefox/Swiftweasel 3.0b4 in fully up to
date Hardy as of 27-Mar-2008, no matter which printer or PPD I choose
for that printer, there is a gap of extra white space between characters
near the right margin of the page (see attached output of printing to
the CUPS-PDF "printer").

This does not occur when printing from Gedit or OpenOffice Writer, for
example, but I have noticed other issues when printing from evince:
although the on screen display is correct, the printed document will
have underlined text shifted over or the entire word of a header shifted
over (I mention this, even though I'm reporting a firefox bug, just in
case the issues are somehow related).

Should've mentioned it in the bug description, but I've also experienced
the squashing reported by Michael.

IIRC, though, the squashing was in ffb3 and the white space gap as
reported here is in ffb4.

[Bug 211860] Re: rdesktop causes sticky Shift sometimes, Ctrl-Shift is fickle

2008-07-03 Thread toobuntu
This is fixed in 1.6.0 uploaded to intrepid. I installed the intrepid
deb in hardy with no issues to report. 1.6.0 also has a fix to work
with Win2k8.

Seems like a good candidate for a backport to me.
