[Bug 1972984] [NEW] Cannot paste filename into File Save dialog of Firefox Snap

2022-05-11 Thread vanadium
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce the problem:

1. Copy a file name or a file path to the clipboard
2. Open Firefox
3. Hit Ctrl+S to open the File Save dialog.
4. Make sure that the "Name" field has focus (which it may not because of
another bug) and attempt to paste: Ctrl+V

Expected behavior: the contents of the clipboard is entered into the "Name"
field.
Observed behaviour: a dialog box appears with error message:

"
The folder contents could not be displayed
Operation not supported
"
In the same spirit, editing an existing name by e.g. copying/cutting part of
the name/path and pasting it back elsewhere in the field does not work.

[Bug 1972983] [NEW] File dialog in snap firefox does not have keyboard focus

2022-05-11 Thread vanadium
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce the issue.

After first log in into Ubuntu Desktop 22.04

1. Launch Firefox and open a website (e.g. www.ubuntu.com)
2. Hit Ctrl+S to open the Save file dialog.
3. Type "Ubuntu" to replace the default file name ("Enterprise Open Source and
Linux | Ubuntu.html"). Hit Enter. It works the first time round.
4. Hit Ctrl+S to open the Save file dialog again.
5. Type "Ubuntu - 2" to replace the default file name ("Enterprise Open Source
and Linux | Ubuntu.html"). This time, your typing fails: the file dialog is not
in focus.

Expected behavior anytime when opening a File dialog: the file dialog
should have keyboard focus.

Observed behavior: the file dialog does not have focus, except the very
first time in the session.

Same observations also for File Open dialogs.

[Bug 1795028] Re: Nautilus crashes during search in is_recursive_search (search-engine)

2018-10-07 Thread vanadium
It is my experience that Ubuntu Search also crashes when searching from
the home directory.

- Most likely to occur with short searches (three to four letters)
- More likely to happen early in the session than after a few restarts of the
session.

Core functionality of a modern file browser that stripped type-ahead
search away to make place for recursive search. More dan "Medium"
importance according to me.

Nautilus 3.26.4 is where I am still experiencing the issue.

[Bug 1672369] [NEW] Mnemonic not visible when opening menu

2017-03-13 Thread vanadium
Public bug reported:

When accessing a menu with the keyboard, mnemonics for the drop down
menu are not immediately visible. Thus, one cannot quickly spot the
mnemonic needed to open a menu item.

Steps to see the issue:

* Open gedit
* Press Alt+f to open the file pull down menu: menmonics cannot be seen. Only
pressing the down arrow to highlight the first menu item will reveal the
mnemonics

Desired behaviour

On opening a pull down menu with the keyboard, mnemonics are visible, so
the user immediately can proceed typing the correct mnemonic (if he does
not yet know it by heart).

Another issue (for another bug report): after opening a pull down menu
with alt+letter, one has to first release the alt key for the
accelerator letter to work.

[Bug 1244869] Re: Unity home lens restricts results to only files after a search returning only files

2016-11-26 Thread vanadium
The issue remains there after more than three years. It is perhaps a
small issue, but it is an issue that is intrusive. It disrupts the
workflow. Rather than quickly launching, for example, gedit, the Dash
does return nothing or just some files. In the worst case, the user
already pressed enter and some random file is launched. The user can
then start to close that file and focus on the Unity dash: call it up
again, press Escape and then enter the query again.

Unique and novel concept, the Unity dash. However, such details and the
care for them determine whether a software is outstanding or not.

[Bug 1415203] Re: Ibus Makes Autokey-GTK Lose Keystokes

2016-05-02 Thread vanadium
Situation got worse in Ubuntu 16.04 because removing ibus results in
issues with the US international keyboard. Dead keys work sometimes,
sometimes not. The workaround of removing ibus does not anymore work
here:

- Dead keys do not work in gnome terminal
- In gedit, dead keys work if gedit launched and opened a file from within
gedit. When gedit is launched from double clicking a text file in explorer,
dead keys do not anymore work.

[Bug 1395415] Re: Autokey Phrases Corrupted in Ubuntu 14.10+

2016-05-02 Thread vanadium
Unfortunately, the workaround does not anymore work in LTS Ubuntu 16.04

other circumstances).

[Bug 1389200] [NEW] Type ahead discards first character

2014-11-04 Thread vanadium
Public bug reported:

Nautilus apparently clears the keyboard buffer sometimes, e.g. when
moving to another directory. If the user is using type ahead rather
rapidly, as power users do, the first character typed while a nautilus
window is opened or while switching to a new folder is discarded.

Steps to reproduce

Type a few letters of a folder in the current directory, press enter
then immediately continue type the name of a folder underneath. If the
folder is opened for the first time in the session, and if the folder is
larger, opening the folder will take a tiny bit of time. However, the
first character the user was already typing may have been discarded.

Expected behaviour: user keystroke should not be discarded but be used
when nautilus is again ready to accept keyboard input.

[Bug 1389209] [NEW] In home lens categories are automatically turned off

Seemingly randomly, categories in the home lens are turned off
automatically. On a subsequent search, results from that category are
not returned. When the user presses esc to clear the search window,
the default categories are enabled again.

Opening Filter results in the Dash allows to follow the status of the
categories.

Detailled description of the problem:

- Both my Applications and FilesFolders categories are open
- superprojects: after a short while, many files and folders appear. however,
I notice that Applications is being disabled.
- superfirefox: rather than having the familiar firefox icon appear, I see a
few files (that presumably have been downloaded with firefox). Indeed, even
while the typing erased the previous search term, Applications continues to
be disabled, and thus is not searched from the home lens. Pressing esc and
then retyping the query re-enables the Applications lens again.

Expected behaviour: as soon as a new query is entered, all Categories
should be re-enabled. Typing firefox from the home lens always should
reveal the firefox icon, unless the user actively chooses to disable the
Applicationa category.

I have the impression this happens when there are many results from one
single category. e.g I can reproduce this typing the name of one of my
folders, e.g. Projects, under my Documents folder. Such a query
presumably retrieves all files with projects in the path name. At that
point, other lenses appear to be dissabled, and unfortunatelly remain
disabled when the user enters a new query.

[Bug 1295908] Re: Sometimes applications stop showing up in the Dash

2014-09-13 Thread vanadium
Switchin on Filter results reveals that searches for user files may
disable the Category Applications. The following time the dash is
summoned, it will not find applications when typing in a new search
term. Pressing Escape before entering the new search term will enable
the Application scope, and again cause the Dash to find applications.

This is a bug, because the scope of the home lens should not change by
itself. Again, this bug is NOT a duplicate of bug #1308037.

[Bug 1295908] Re: Sometimes applications stop showing up in the Dash

2014-07-17 Thread vanadium
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1308037 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1308037

I don't agree that this bug report is a duplicate of bug #1308037. The
other bug reports no applications appearing in the applications scope.
This bug report reports applications not anymore appearing in the home
lens. The Applications lens still keeps working, though (but not, as I
understand, in bug #1308037).

As a matter of fact, it is due to Applications being disabled in
Filter results in the home dash at some time during the session,
without apparent reason. Checking Applications back on again makes
applications reappear in the home lens.

It is not possible to say what triggers this, and thus impossible to
provide steps to reproduce this issue.

[Bug 1267895] [NEW] nautilus connect to server cannot connect to smb with ntlm security

2014-01-10 Thread vanadium
Public bug reported:

At work, there are two samba servers I need to connect to. One of the servers
connects without issues, the other does not. Symptoms: error message
This location could not be displayed.
You do not have the permissions necessary to view the contents of “folder on
server.domain.com”

The connection is made: an icon with an eject icon is visible in the
left nautilus pane. The right nautilus pane remains empty.

I found the reason. The server is using ntml, and not ntmlv2. I can
connect to the server with the command line using the option sec=ntlm.

Similar to OSX, Ubuntu should also connect graphically without issues on
these servers that still use an old security protocol.

[Bug 1239710] Re: indicator-datetime or -session missing ~10% of the time

2013-12-23 Thread vanadium
Today, I again have the issue. It occurs 1% or less of the time for me.
I have launcher placement set to all displays. However, I do not
experience the bug to the extend described in the new bug, 1253693,
where apparently no indicaters appear at all. It is just the date-time
indicator that is missing, and it only happens very occasionally. My
specs and the packages have not changed since I reported on 2013-11-20
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/indicator-
datetime/+bug/1239710/comments/36). I am not sure this bug should be
considered completely fixed.

[Bug 517215] Re: Evince prints an extra blank page after each print job

invalid. Sorry for taking your time and thank you for the assistance.

[Bug 517215] Re: Evince prints an extra blank page after each print job

2013-03-20 Thread vanadium
I would like to see this bug reopened, because it is an issue that I
have been facing since I started using Ubuntu four years ago, and which
I have experiences with a range of HP laserprinters (strangely enough, I
do not have any experience with other printers ;). This is an anoying
bug, causing paper to be spilled. I am surprised to find so few
information about this on the internet: apparently people do not care.

The issue is long standing and confined to evince only. To reproduce,
open a PDF in Ubuntu, Ctrl+p, select Current page, and instead of the
current page, the current page + a blanc page comes out. Print the
entire document, and an extra page comes out.

This is not related to mismatched papersizes between the print settings
and the PDF page size: I tested that. (in fact, there would be no reason
for a blank page even if paper sizes would not match).

I changed the description of this bug from Additional blank pages to
Evince prints an extra blank page after each print job.

Please provide clear instructions if you need extra information, as my
technical background is limited.

** Summary changed:

- Additional blank pages
+ Evince prints an extra blank page after each print job

2012-11-21 Thread vanadium
Ubuntu 12.10 and evince 3.6.0-0ubuntu2, fresh install, fully updated (21
november): this still seems to work flakey.
Launch one document, maximize, close
Launch another document: it is launched maximized: OK. Close
Launch a third document: it is launched unmaximized, although it fills the
screen. Expectation: it should launch maximized.

Experiment done on a fresh install, with new documents that never were
opened on the system before.

[Bug 1026426] Re: LibreOffice Unity integration (launcher and switcher) is broken

2012-11-12 Thread vanadium
Good to hear that a solution is very near now.

I am working with 12.04, so I will indeed test the bug fix in proposed
as it is released.

With the tray icon activated (i.e. Enable systray quicklauncher checked under
Options - LibreOffice - memory) I was not able to trigger the issue when
opening and closing documents. However, a very easy way to trigger the bug,
with or without Enable systray quicklauncher checked, is for me
- open two libreoffice documents by launching them from nautilus
- In libreoffice, Use File - Exit (that presumably also closes the LO
quicklauncher)
- lauch a libreoffice document from nautilus: it is not anymore associated with
the Unity launcher.

now, I could not trigger the bug opening/closing odp (Impress)

[Bug 741995] Re: Unity acts not as a dock for LibreOffice but as a launcher

2011-11-15 Thread vanadium
This issue concerns useability of Unity with a major office application.
I suggest it should receive greater attention, as this issue should
certainly not persist in the LTS 12.04 release.

The problem seems aggraviated in 11.10, where sometimes Unity looses
track of a Libreoffice document alltogether (i.e., there is even no
ghost icon anymore representing the application). It is diffucult to
reproduce the latter issue, though. Current issue, on the other hand,
can be rather easily reproduced by loading a larger LibreOffice document
through a double click in nautilus or through the dash.

[Bug 858333] Re: Nautilus quick search not working

2011-10-27 Thread vanadium
An update today fixed the disappearance of the text box, yet tere is
another issue. Steps to reproduce:

- Clik file system to browse from /
- navigate to usr/share/applications

usrentershareenterappli

Upon enter, the text search remains open, still containing the text
usr. It is not possible to continue typing to select share, as
nautilus is looking for usrshare.

Pressing esc makes the textbox disappear, but does not clear it: when
typing, it reappears, still containing the text usr.

[Bug 741995] Re: Unity acts not as a dock for LibreOffice but as a launcher

2011-10-23 Thread vanadium
This issue is still remaining in fully updated Oneric. I sometimes have
the impression that it is related with the time needed to load a
document. A short document gets correctly associated with the
Libreoffice icon, whereas a document that needs more time to launch gets
attached to the white ghost icon.

Tried Gnome shell today: it has no problem with libreOffice.

[Bug 646724] Re: not all files show up in files-place

2011-07-01 Thread vanadium
Some files opened from that folder and below do show up. It is the
project folder itself that cannot be retrieved through the file lens. In
some cases, there is a need to organize related files in folders. Easy
access to the folder would then be a benefit. The Files Folders lens
could be very useful to easily retrieve folder just by typing part of
the name. Working on different project, it is not always practical to
remember the exact name of a document (e.g. meeting reports), so one
wants to see the folder.

Another issue with how things currently work. There is a subfolder with
pictures. Once you've been looking at the pictures, the search term for
the folder causes the lens to be flooded with these pictures. Retrieval
of e.g. word processing documents using the folder name as search term
then becomes very cumbersome.

[Bug 646724] Re: not all files show up in files-place

2011-05-12 Thread vanadium
The issue is that the current implementation of files and folders is
unacceptable. It is unacceptable that it does not show up the files the
user knows are out there. This effectively breaks the function from the
perspective of the user. Thus, this issue should be corrected with the
highest priority, or the function should be removed if it cannot be
technically implemented in a satisfactory way.

Additional problem: inconsistency. Applications finds all applications
on the computer, and even Applications *not* on the computer. Files and
Folders on the other hand, does not even find several the user's own
files that are on the local computer.

Currently, this functions as an adequate Recent documents tool. Rename
it to Recent documents and the current issue is solved. Then, a Files
and folders lens could be a feature request for unity.

Extending ZG with a new range of data providers does not seem like a
priority right know, except if aims to make sure that at least, a user
can retrieve his files. Let the rest follow once this fundamental flaw
is solved.

[Bug 753304] Re: LibreOffice no longer groups correctly in launcher

2011-05-10 Thread vanadium
I confirm this issue. For clarity, the issue is that when launching e.g.
a text document, it gets a separate icon (a plain white document),
rather than being grouped with the standard blue LibreOffice icon.

The separate icon can be closed independently using the right-
click/close option of the launcher. The OOo documents associated with
the standard button remain open. Reversely also, closing the documents
associated with the standard button does not close the separate icon.

It is not very consistently reproducible. In the attached screenshot,
three documents were grouped with the standard icon, a fourth document
got its own icon.

I have pretty much the impression that it is related with the time there
is needed to open a document. Larger documents that need time to open,
are all grouped in the separate launcher. Small documents appear
correctly in the blue Writer icon.

Attachment illustrates the issue (again) so that it is very clear what
we are talking about.

Please, when testing, try with large documents as well.

[Bug 753304] Re: LibreOffice no longer groups correctly in launcher

2011-05-10 Thread vanadium
In answer to the question of Bilal Akhtar with respect to the tooltip:

Blue LibreOffice Writer icon: LibreOffice Writer
White separate document icon: LibreOffice 3.3

Only one libreoffice process is running, though:

$ ps ax | grep -i libre
 2509 ?Sl 1:42 /usr/lib/libreoffice/program/soffice.bin -calc
/home/vanadium/Documents/programme.ods -splash-pipe=5
 3035 pts/0S+ 0:00 grep --color=auto -i libre

(consistent with first document opened, a spreadsheet in this case)

Needs are more modest than what Tracker or Beagle do. There is only a
need to index file and directory names, not their contents.

[Bug 749566] Re: Search for a folder gives everything inside the folder, except the folder itself

2011-05-05 Thread vanadium
Playing music and maintaining pictures may not need a hierarchical
classification indeed. However, it is difficult to imagine a folder-
less computer for professional work considering the way file open and
file close dialogs currently work. A folder-less computer would require
an entire overhaul of current file management tools, file save dialogs,
etc., where instead of browsing for a folder users could comment/tag the
files. As long as this is not the case, and users are obliged to
classify theyr data based on a hierarchy, Unity must provide the proper
tools to work with a hierarchical file system. This includes the simple
ability to retrieve a folder a user knows is there.

Unity currently is extremely limited where it concerns the file lens. It
assumes that the user knows bits of the name of every file he is working
on and needs to retrieve. Instead, it will happen frequently that a user
will look into the project folder and find the file he needs, browsing
though it.

What is worse, Unity only seems to index files that have been recently used.
Thus, older files, or files that have recently been copied onto the system
(e.g. after a fresh OS install) cannot be retrieved using Unity!
As such, the Unity interface currently does not allow to search all
folders/documents a user has. There is no other way than launching nautilus and
use the old and slow search tools. Still far away from a desktop without
hierarchical file systems.

[Bug 777937] [NEW] Unity files lens does not find files and folders

2011-05-05 Thread vanadium
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity-place-files

It should be possible to retrieve any file/folder from the user's home
folder from the Unity file lens. Currently, it happens too frequently
that the File lens does not retrieve a folder I know is there.

The Applications lens finds all applications on the system, and even
these not on the system, available for download). In the same realm, the
File lens should find all files in the user's home directory. Typing
part of the name of a file/folder that is on the system, should retrieve
the file/folder.

Currently, the file lens cannot be used reliable. One is never sure if a
needed file/folder will be retrieved or not if it has not been very
recently used. As a matter of fact, as per bug 749566, folders are not
retrieved anyway.

Super + a, Update is guaranteed to retrieve Update Manager. I would
like the same reliability from the file lens in retrieving my files.

[Bug 607573] Re: evince not allowed to open fdf files

2010-11-29 Thread vanadium
Because there has been only one person reporting the issue, I 'd want to
confirm the issue. My version is Document Viewer 2.32.0 on Ubuntu 10.10. I did
not seem to have the issue on 8.04.
It also concerns a journal paper, that can be opened without problem after
renaming the extension.

[Bug 299330] Re: Alt+Tab - switching applications delay. slow

2010-02-10 Thread vanadium
This bug affects me as well for a couple of years now. What I see
sometimes happening, is that the switcher is drawn in first instance
with a windows title bar (without text). The title bar quickly
disappears, and the switcher then extends downwards by the height of the
title bar.

What helps to return to a correct behavior for a short while is to
disable visual effects, then re-enable them using System - Preferences
- Appearance. tabbing remains quite slow, but not unworkable so. This
concerns a Dell Latitude 810 with a [Radeon Mobility X600] graphics
card.

[Bug 26303] Re: [upstream] OpenOffice floating toolbars prevent attaining focus when selected in Gnome taskbar

[Bug 26303] Re: [Upstream] [hardy] OpenOffice floating toolbars prevent attaining focus when selected in Gnome taskbar

2008-09-17 Thread vanadium
Related to this issue: switching with the keyboard to an OOo Document
where a floating window is active will display the Document and floating
Window, but none of them is active and the keyboard does not seem to
work.

Steps to reproduce the issue

1) Launch a Writer document. Open the style Window (F11) or open the navigator
(already here, keyboard focus is lost and the user is obliged either to click
or alt+tab to continue working)
2) Launch a second writer document
3) Press Alt+tab to go to the first instance: no window is active, no keys
except system wide keys do anything. The user is obliged to click or alt-tab to
regain focus.

The above can also be reproduced using the task bar with the mouse
rather than Alt+tab.

In my opinion, this usability issue, which is an annoyance, deserves
more attention than it currently has. The office suite is one of the
central applications in modern desktop computing.

(Tested on Ubuntu 8.04 with OOo 2.4.1)

[Bug 150187] Re: [gutsy] [regression] Evince has very bad quality when printing pdf files.

2008-05-14 Thread vanadium
I confirm this issue on Hardy. Installing cm-super fixed the display
issue. After that, the document that Benjamin Redelings added opens
instantaneously. However, printing continues to generate a very low
quality bitmapped printout.

The problem is there with PDFs created using pdfLatex. I do not have the
problem with PDFs generated by ghostscript.

I confirm that the problem is with evince only. No issue with Acrobat
Reader.

[Bug 152638] Permissions and owner/group changed when editing using gedit

2007-10-14 Thread vanadium
Public bug reported:

This is an issue that is introduced in Gutsy, but worked correctly in
Feisty.

Steps to reproduce the problem: enter following code in terminal, when
gedit appears, type something, exit while saving.

mkdir test; cd test; touch test
sudo chown root:video test
sudo chmod 660 test
ls -l
gedit test
ls -l

A normal user is by default member of the video group, and therefore can
edit the file test. On Feisty, the permissions are correctly retained
when the normal user has edited the file:

-rw-rw 1 root video 5 2007-10-14 15:55 test
-rw-r- 1 vanadium video 0 2007-10-14 15:55 test~

However, two users of Gutsy report a different behaviour:

-rw--- 1 rfb rfb 6 2007-10-13 19:32 test
-rw-rw 1 root video 0 2007-10-13 19:31 test~

Indeed, the backup has the original permissions, but permissions and
owner are changed for the edited version. This obviously cripples the
concept of unix permissions and will result in eventual hard links to
point to the backup file instead of the updated file. As far as my
technical skills go, this must be no more than a gedit issue, where
gedit now saves the new content in a new inode (renaming afterwards)
instead of saving to the same inode, as it should to maintain the
integrity of the file management.
