[Bug 1479913] Re: SRU request: fglrx.ko fails because of backported GPL-only 'pci_ignore_hotplug' symbol
This morning's 15.04 updates broke two of my machines as well. After much hair-pulling I found this bug report. Enabling 'proposed' and updating to the kernel contained therein, or switching to the -15 kernel is enough to get the driver to build. However, in both cases, attempting to enable multi-screen mode via amdcccle (with screen 1 right of screen 2) causes X to crash severely, as soon as you hit "OK" or "Apply". Both screen go into standby mode, the disk access light goes solid, and the system hard-locks (can't SysRq-REISUB). The Reset button is the only way to recover from this state, and the dual-screen mode never got saved. This is a fresh install of 15.04, with a "put all my stuff in" script, hence it's theoretically identical to what was installed initially, aside from enabling "proposed" for this attempt. This is on a machine that has run fglrx without incident from roughly 12.04 to whatever state 15.04 was in at the end of the day yesterday. The open source driver works fine in all respects, aside from being slower than fglrx on this hardware. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1479913 Title: SRU request: fglrx.ko fails because of backported GPL-only 'pci_ignore_hotplug' symbol To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fglrx-installer/+bug/1479913/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1446760] Re: sddm and lightdm can run at the same time
(Running Xubuntu 15.04 here, with kubuntu-desktop installed) Actually, there are two issues caused by this. One is the two DM's fighting over which gets control of the login screen, as described above. [Bug 390508] Re: notifyOSD ignores the expire timeout parameter
I don't quite understand either, and I try to be as inclusive as possible in life, but my complaint is that there is an "official" stance to ignore the requests for a warning on the "official" documentation that says something works that does not. [Bug 390508] Re: notifyOSD ignores the expire timeout parameter
Where is the illogical reasoning where: A group of people encountered a timeout option that was not working, spent many hours of their time, lives, and energy, to figure out what was causing it, and only to find out it does nothing but did not warm them of so? They posted about this, and have asked for: 1. At least a warning. 2. An option to enable or disable it. 3. To make it work as documented. So the logical reasoning is to say, "no we won't do that and we won't tell you about it, only way to find out is the same way everyone else did by ending up here on this thread". > The people who have tried to figure out why the timeout does > not work > are going by out-of-date notify-send documentation. nh2 > kindly attached > a patch that adds the sentence "Currently ignored" to the > timeout flag > description. Latest version does not reflect that... still. > It is not the responsibility of a software project to contain > the union > of all features or options provided by its predecessors. That > leads to > overcomplexity and to increasingly unreliable and > unmaintainable software. This is not the union of all features, it's clearly something that needs to be addressed and we have proven it with this thread alone. Let's look at Windows and Linux: Windows is commercially based, they include "features" that sell, how often does Windows crash? Linux is community based, anyone can contribute, the features that people want get in. How often does Linux crash? Having more features does not always result in overcomplexity, increasingly unreliable, and unmaintainable software. We want meaningful features that people are asking for, not just something that would be "neat". We've wasted so many days and weeks on this topic, it needs to be addressed, not just "won't fix". -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/390508 Title: notifyOSD ignores the expire timeout parameter To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/hundredpapercuts/+bug/390508/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 390508] Re: notifyOSD ignores the expire timeout parameter
Well let's approach this logically, scientifically, sensibly, and reasonably. We have an easy opportunity to add a "choice", to have the option or not. But we are choosing not to have a choice. The whole point of Ubuntu and free software is to be better than commercial, to actually have the best and brightest minds contribute, not highschool hackers who just want to make a buck and write buggy code. We should somehow at the very least, come half way and allow a choice for to have the expire option or not. Just because no one else does it does not mean we should not have that option (note I am not saying that we absolutely must have it, but a choice). We can choose to use Linux, Windows, or Mac, or something else entirely, we can and should have a choice to enable such a timeout/expire in our OSD displays. Note that I said choice to enable or disable on the server side, not explicitly accepting expire arguments on the client side. With regards to the "silent majority", we don't know how many people have come across this bug, we don't know how many people want it or do not want it. But we have many comments from people who have spent many hours trying to figure out why the expire timeout was not being detected so I think placing a warning about the expire timeout not being accepted is reasonable. Throughout history, having fewer choices has always, eventually, led to monopolies, dictators, and single source dominations. I don't think we are close to that with NotifyOSD, but we are going in that direction if we explicitly deny such a choice.
Re: [Bug 390508] Re: notifyOSD ignores the expire timeout parameter
I was not out to program anything the day I found out about this problem. I was writing a shell script just to get something displayed on screen after a key press. I found out about notify-osd and used it, it took 5 seconds for me to figure out how to use it. Then I realized that notifications were backlogged and I couldn't figure out why. notify-send did not warn that the expiration timeouts were being ignored. If you call me a programmer just for writing a shell script I feel disproportionately-honored. It's just a shell script, that I spent two days trying to figure out what was wrong and my time is valuable, there was no notice that an option was being ignored. My gripe is that it was being ignored and no warning was being printed as it was. That will waste a lot of people's time, and cause a lot of users to wonder who the bad programmer was to see a notification on screen repeat for several minutes and no way to get rid of it. My workaround for killing the backlog stack was: #!/bin/bash pkill notify-osd notify-send "Current value is $VALUE" -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/390508 Title: notifyOSD ignores the expire timeout parameter To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/hundredpapercuts/+bug/390508/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1080993] [NEW] Dead screen on resume from suspend Dell Insp. 9200
Public bug reported: Preface: I was directed to report this as a bug against xorg; apologies in advance if it's filed against the wrong package. One of my machines is an old Dell Inspiron 9200 laptop. Contained therein is an Intel chipset and ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 graphics device. I am running Ubuntu 12.04 "Precise", from fresh install from earlier today. This machine has the latest Gallium3d drivers installed from a PPA ( https://launchpad.net/~oibaf/+archive/graphics-drivers/ -- it is a stripped down set of just video drivers and necessary related libraries, so I don't have to mess with the full xorg-edgers or -swat repositories ). Please note that this problem also exists with the default open-source Radeon driver supplied with Precise. I do NOT use the proprietary driver blob, (it no longer supports this machine). When I suspend the laptop, it goes down just like it should. However, when I resume it, it wakes up but the screen remains turned off. That is, it appears completely dead to the observer - not even the backlight comes on - but I can ssh in from another computer, execute commands, reboot, whatever I want as long as it doesn't require me to look at the laptop's screen. While attempting to come up with a workaround, I ran across the vbetool command, namely "vbetool post". When executed as root (via ssh), it resets and wakes up the laptop's video device, but whether the laptop is focused on the X display or on a virtual console, the screen is garbled. Whatever is supposed to be there IS in fact there, it's just twisted and distorted beyond usability. The only exception is that the mouse pointer is *mostly* intact (slightly distorted). I can move said pointer around like usual, and could possibly even click on stuff, log into the display manager, etc., but of course I still can't see what I'm doing. Switching to another virtual console (e.g. Ctrl-Alt-F1 or 'sudo chvt 1') and back to the X display has no effect - if it was dead, it's still dead. If it was garbled from having tried 'vbetool post', it remains garbled (but the contents change). Further, if I disable Kernel Mode Setting with the "nomodeset" boot parameter, I am then able to suspend and resume to my heart's content. Except then the video driver gets downshifted to the old VESA one, as Gallium requires KMS. If KMS is disabled, I can also use the old Radeon driver, but then I lose 3D/OpenGL acceleration, so at that point I may as well have been using VESA. I also tested, briefly, this machine's ability to run Intrepid Ibex using the proprietary ATI blob (v9.3) - suspend, resume, 3D acceleration all worked as expected in that configuration, but of course that version of Ubuntu is quite out of date and unsupported, so it got overwritten with Precise. I am currently operating on that fresh re-install. Every partition on the machine was re-formatted prior to the install, leaving nothing behind from any previous OS. Only a minimal amount of additional software has been installed since that time. None of the system's configuration files have been altered except for the grub config (when I attempted unsuccessfully to disable KMS). What I expected to happen, of course, is that the laptop should turn on and re-initialize the screen when it comes up from suspend without me having to run stuff like vbetool, which doesn't work for me anyway. :-) ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 12.04 Package: xorg 1:7.6+12ubuntu1 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.2.0-34.53-generic 3.2.33 Uname: Linux 3.2.0-34-generic i686 ApportVersion: 2.0.1-0ubuntu15 Architecture: i386 Date: Tue Nov 20 00:29:11 2012 InstallationMedia: Xubuntu 12.04 LTS "Precise Pangolin" - Release i386 (20120423) MarkForUpload: True ProcEnviron: LANGUAGE=en_US:en TERM=xterm PATH=(custom, no user) LANG=en_US.UTF-8 SHELL=/bin/bash SourcePackage: xorg UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install) ** Affects: xorg (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: apport-bug i386 precise third-party-packages -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1080993 Title: Dead screen on resume from suspend Dell Insp. 9200 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1080993/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1028737] [NEW] Thunar keeps unselecting files
Public bug reported: Thunar 1.2.3 under Xubuntu 12.04 "Precise". Two computers are running these versions, both of which are up-to-date as of this morning. What happens: When trying to select files, either with the click-and-drag "lasso" function or by individually clicking/shift-clicking/ctrl-clicking the files, Thunar only gives me a few seconds to get to the next action before it un-selects all of the files. If I right-click on a file, the file is selected and context menu that pops up is correct at first, displaying such items as "Open with.." and "Delete", but is replaced almost immediately with a mostly greyed-out version, and the file gets un-selected. Simply doing a Ctrl-A to select all files, and then taking one's hands away from the keyboard and mouse is sufficient to trigger this bug. It happens in any Thunar window, displaying pretty much any random file types (that is, I see no pattern). This was happening on both machines, but for some reason I can't identify, one of the two has since stopped acting up, or at least wasn't when I tried to reproduce it for this bug report. What should happen: It shouldn't un-select my files unless I tell it to. :-) ** Affects: thunar (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1028737 Title: Thunar keeps unselecting files To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/thunar/+bug/1028737/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
