in need of replacement, or to move the system to a cooler environment.

[Bug 1468609] Re: Moving a file results in wrong pre-filled filename

2017-03-13 Thread Vanessa Ezekowitz
Still an issue with the copy found in Debian 8.7 "sid" repository as
well, as of 2017-03-13. Gwenview's "About" dialog gives a version
number of 16.08.3 (using KDE Frameworks 5.28.0, QT 5.7.1).

[Bug 1479913] Re: SRU request: fglrx.ko fails because of backported GPL-only 'pci_ignore_hotplug' symbol

2015-08-18 Thread Vanessa Ezekowitz
This morning's 15.04 updates broke two of my machines as well. After
much hair-pulling I found this bug report.

Enabling 'proposed' and updating to the kernel contained therein, or
switching to the -15 kernel is enough to get the driver to build.

However, in both cases, attempting to enable multi-screen mode via
amdcccle (with screen 1 right of screen 2) causes X to crash severely,
as soon as you hit "OK" or "Apply".

Both screen go into standby mode, the disk access light goes solid, and
the system hard-locks (can't SysRq-REISUB).

The Reset button is the only way to recover from this state, and the
dual-screen mode never got saved.

This is a fresh install of 15.04, with a "put all my stuff in" script,
hence it's theoretically identical to what was installed initially,
aside from enabling "proposed" for this attempt.

This is on a machine that has run fglrx without incident from roughly
12.04 to whatever state 15.04 was in at the end of the day yesterday.

The open source driver works fine in all respects, aside from being
slower than fglrx on this hardware.

[Bug 1468610] [NEW] Items only respond to double-click

2015-06-24 Thread Vanessa Ezekowitz
Public bug reported:

This is running under Xubuntu 15.04 with the kubuntu-desktop package
installed.

Action: Set both KDE and XFCE (via the KDE Settings application and the
Thunar settings dialog, respectively) to open files/folders with a
single click. Start Gwenview and either remain at the "Recent Folders"
screen, or do File -> Open. Click once on any item that should either
open or display.

Result: The item is merely selected.

Expected result: The item should be opened or displayed, as
appropriate, since we're in single-click-to-open mode.

Other KDE/Qt applications running under XFCE, such as Dolphin respect
the single-click-to-open mode.

[Bug 1468609] [NEW] Moving a file results in wrong pre-filled filename

2015-06-24 Thread Vanessa Ezekowitz
Public bug reported:

This is running under Xubuntu 15.04 with the kubuntu-desktop package
installed.

Action: Execute the application, navigate to or select a folder full of
images, open the folder, and select exactly one image. Press F8 or do
File -> Move to...

Result: you'll be presented with a dialog box asking for the target
folder, but where the filename should be displayed near the top of the
window, "" is displayed instead. If you then proceed to
choose a target directory and move the file, the file gets renamed to
"" (with the <> signs).

Expected result: The file should be moved without displaying or being
given a gibberish filename. :-)

fighting over which gets control of the login screen, as described
above. Two, apparently there's a conflicting mouse service that gets
activated by sddm, which causes mouse movements within the XFCE session
to become jerky and jittery - like the pointer is trying to be in two
places at once.

Uninstalling sddm fixes both issues for me.

[Bug 390508] Re: notifyOSD ignores the expire timeout parameter

2015-03-28 Thread Vanessa Lee
I don't quite understand either, and I try to be as inclusive as
possible in life, but my complaint is that there is an "official" stance
to ignore the requests for a warning on the "official" documentation
that says something works that does not.

That is inhernetly saying, "yes I officially said A works, but I also
officially decided that I will not have A work and also not mention that
it does not work."

Matthew Paul Thomas (mpt) we don't know how many people are annoyed with
this bug vs those who are not because today, we simply don't have as
many competent programmers as we did a decade ago (before the tech
industry boom) that will delve this deep into a problem amoung the
programming community.

Obviously with this many comments and complaints alone we could say that
this is an issue that isn't going away.

[Bug 919577] Re: Can't find mbrola voices in standard install path

2015-02-19 Thread Vanessa Faxanadu
^^This is why people are reluctant to switch to Linux. @il-muflone, this
bug has been persistent since 11.04. I'm on 14.04 and no fix has been in
the official Canonical repos YET??? I'm a girl Ubuntu evangelist, I tell
people how great Linux is over Windows or Mac, yet minor problems like
this, I am the one who gets blamed.

If I would, this status would have been set to Critical...

There needs to be an easier workaround. None of these fixes are working.

[Bug 390508] Re: notifyOSD ignores the expire timeout parameter

2015-02-06 Thread Vanessa Lee
It would be great if they would accept that, but this is an issue they
"won't fix".

If they did accept your manual page fix, someone down the line would
say, "hey, wouldn't it be great if we could add a timeout option?"

Then the cycle of madness repeats (with a longer circumferance).

[Bug 1417867] [NEW] Cannot change controller mappings on Configuration > Input

2015-02-03 Thread Vanessa Faxanadu
Public bug reported:

it seems like it pops up a dialog that says (possibly) to press a key
with a time delay, but doesn't allow to press a key or a controller
button, right after the UI button is clicked on the GUI to change either
the "Up" (U), "Down" (D), "Left" (L), "RIght" (R), Select, Start, B, or
A buttons, it disappears as quickly as it is pressed.

I have a third-party Xbox 360 wired controller, and it even does it when
I attempt to do it with a keyboard.

Ubuntu Version, as reported by `lsb_release -rd`:
Description:Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS
Release:14.04

nestopia version: 1.45+dfsg-1

Expected:
To press a keyboard key or controller button to map to a virtual NES controller

What happened instead:
Dialog or whatever it was quickly disappeared without allowing the expected
behavior, as described above, to happen.

Yeah I know, I still see the OSD staying on and wondered, oh if there
were just some way to make it disappear faster if it wasn't important.

Hey, there must be a timeout option... oh wait, I'm not going to fall
for that one again.

We can waste our time on more productive issues that plaque the world
that we are MUCH MORE LIKELY TO AGREE UPON, such as:

1. Abortion.
2. Which religion is the one true religion.
3. How to school your children.
4. Reducing the diviorce rate.

Just look at all those topics where so many people agree on and have
resolved things so well, seriously, look at them, then look at this
ridiculous issue.

[Bug 1382291] Re: Account creation during first boot of an OEM image needs to scale based on resolution

2015-01-13 Thread Vanessa Chang
** Description changed:

- In HiDPI screens, the OOBE for OEM images is not ideal.
+ [Impact]
+ The ubiquity window size display in HiDPI screens is small.

The new gSettings to scale GTK applications (and their corresponding
settings in System Settings) work great, but this does not help for the
account creation (first boot) for users buying a pre-install system.

We would need changes in Ubiquity to:

   * Probe the monitor to get resolution information
   * Re-scale the ubiquity window using the corresponding gsetting
(com.ubuntu.user-interface scale-factor) based on resolution

We would need the changes to be backported to Trusty as well.
+
+ [Test Case]
+ 1. Install image on a system with HiDPI panel
+ 2. Check the ubiquity window size displayed on screen
+
+ Expected Result:
+ The window size should be reasonable for user to read the content.
+
+ Actual Result:
+ The window size is small and user is hard to read the content.

[Bug 390508] Re: notifyOSD ignores the expire timeout parameter

2014-03-12 Thread Vanessa Lee
Where is the illogical reasoning where:

A group of people encountered a timeout option that was not working,
spent many hours of their time, lives, and energy, to figure out what
was causing it, and only to find out it does nothing but did not warm
them of so?

They posted about this, and have asked for:

1. At least a warning.
2. An option to enable or disable it.
3. To make it work as documented.

So the logical reasoning is to say, "no we won't do that and we won't
tell you about it, only way to find out is the same way everyone else
did by ending up here on this thread".

altogether.

Latest version does not reflect that... still.

> It is not the responsibility of a software project to contain > the union

software.

This is not the union of all features, it's clearly something that needs
to be addressed and we have proven it with this thread alone.

Let's look at Windows and Linux:

Windows is commercially based, they include "features" that sell, how
often does Windows crash?

Linux is community based, anyone can contribute, the features that
people want get in. How often does Linux crash?

Having more features does not always result in overcomplexity,
increasingly unreliable, and unmaintainable software. We want meaningful
features that people are asking for, not just something that would be
"neat".

We've wasted so many days and weeks on this topic, it needs to be
addressed, not just "won't fix".

[Bug 390508] Re: notifyOSD ignores the expire timeout parameter

2014-03-10 Thread Vanessa Lee
Well let's approach this logically, scientifically, sensibly, and
reasonably.

We have an easy opportunity to add a "choice", to have the option or
not. But we are choosing not to have a choice.

The whole point of Ubuntu and free software is to be better than
commercial, to actually have the best and brightest minds contribute,
not highschool hackers who just want to make a buck and write buggy
code.

We should somehow at the very least, come half way and allow a choice
for to have the expire option or not.

Just because no one else does it does not mean we should not have that
option (note I am not saying that we absolutely must have it, but a
choice).

We can choose to use Linux, Windows, or Mac, or something else entirely,
we can and should have a choice to enable such a timeout/expire in our
OSD displays. Note that I said choice to enable or disable on the server
side, not explicitly accepting expire arguments on the client side.

With regards to the "silent majority", we don't know how many people
have come across this bug, we don't know how many people want it or do
not want it.

But we have many comments from people who have spent many hours trying
to figure out why the expire timeout was not being detected so I think
placing a warning about the expire timeout not being accepted is
reasonable.

Throughout history, having fewer choices has always, eventually, led to
monopolies, dictators, and single source dominations. I don't think we
are close to that with NotifyOSD, but we are going in that direction if
we explicitly deny such a choice.

Re: [Bug 390508] Re: notifyOSD ignores the expire timeout parameter

2014-01-02 Thread Vanessa Lee
I was not out to program anything the day I found out about this
problem.

I was writing a shell script just to get something displayed on screen
after a key press. I found out about notify-osd and used it, it took 5
seconds for me to figure out how to use it.

Then I realized that notifications were backlogged and I couldn't figure
out why. notify-send did not warn that the expiration timeouts were
being ignored.

If you call me a programmer just for writing a shell script I feel
disproportionately-honored.

It's just a shell script, that I spent two days trying to figure out
what was wrong and my time is valuable, there was no notice that an
option was being ignored.

My gripe is that it was being ignored and no warning was being printed
as it was. That will waste a lot of people's time, and cause a lot of
users to wonder who the bad programmer was to see a notification on
screen repeat for several minutes and no way to get rid of it.

My workaround for killing the backlog stack was:

#!/bin/bash
pkill notify-osd
notify-send "Current value is $VALUE"

Having spent 5 minutes learning about notify-osd and then 6 hours trying

appearent there is a dichotomous debate over this timeout issue.

I'm not sure if it's already mentioned before, but isn't there a way for
the user to set the server to recognize timeouts? At least this way we
don't have the fork and hack the code just to make a new notify-osd-
that-recognizes-timeout.

[Bug 1104435] Re: xfce4-session crashed with SIGSEGV in g_slice_alloc()

2013-05-17 Thread Vanessa Ezekowitz
Both of my 13.04 setups were affected by this (one rarely, the other
quite severely). The PPA in comment #19 applied cleanly and fixed both.

[Bug 1080993] [NEW] Dead screen on resume from suspend Dell Insp. 9200

2012-11-19 Thread Vanessa Ezekowitz
Public bug reported:

Preface: I was directed to report this as a bug against xorg; apologies
in advance if it's filed against the wrong package.

One of my machines is an old Dell Inspiron 9200 laptop. Contained
therein is an Intel chipset and ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 graphics
device. I am running Ubuntu 12.04 "Precise", from fresh install from
earlier today. This machine has the latest Gallium3d drivers installed
from a PPA ( https://launchpad.net/~oibaf/+archive/graphics-drivers/ --
it is a stripped down set of just video drivers and necessary related
libraries, so I don't have to mess with the full xorg-edgers or -swat
repositories ).

Please note that this problem also exists with the default open-source
Radeon driver supplied with Precise.

I do NOT use the proprietary driver blob, (it no longer supports this
machine).

When I suspend the laptop, it goes down just like it should. However,
when I resume it, it wakes up but the screen remains turned off. That
is, it appears completely dead to the observer - not even the backlight
comes on - but I can ssh in from another computer, execute commands,
reboot, whatever I want as long as it doesn't require me to look at the
laptop's screen.

While attempting to come up with a workaround, I ran across the vbetool
command, namely "vbetool post". When executed as root (via ssh), it
resets and wakes up the laptop's video device, but whether the laptop is
focused on the X display or on a virtual console, the screen is garbled.
Whatever is supposed to be there IS in fact there, it's just twisted and
distorted beyond usability. The only exception is that the mouse
pointer is *mostly* intact (slightly distorted). I can move said
pointer around like usual, and could possibly even click on stuff, log
into the display manager, etc., but of course I still can't see what I'm
doing.

Switching to another virtual console (e.g. Ctrl-Alt-F1 or 'sudo chvt 1')
and back to the X display has no effect - if it was dead, it's still
dead. If it was garbled from having tried 'vbetool post', it remains
garbled (but the contents change).

Further, if I disable Kernel Mode Setting with the "nomodeset" boot
parameter, I am then able to suspend and resume to my heart's
content. Except then the video driver gets downshifted to the old
VESA one, as Gallium requires KMS. If KMS is disabled, I can also use
the old Radeon driver, but then I lose 3D/OpenGL acceleration, so at
that point I may as well have been using VESA.

I also tested, briefly, this machine's ability to run Intrepid Ibex
using the proprietary ATI blob (v9.3) - suspend, resume, 3D acceleration
all worked as expected in that configuration, but of course that version
of Ubuntu is quite out of date and unsupported, so it got overwritten
with Precise.

I am currently operating on that fresh re-install. Every partition on
the machine was re-formatted prior to the install, leaving nothing
behind from any previous OS.

Only a minimal amount of additional software has been installed since
that time. None of the system's configuration files have been altered
except for the grub config (when I attempted unsuccessfully to disable
KMS).

What I expected to happen, of course, is that the laptop should turn on
and re-initialize the screen when it comes up from suspend without me
having to run stuff like vbetool, which doesn't work for me anyway. :-)

It was on two desktop computers with ordinary keyboards and mice, and
only happened in Thunar. This bug seems to have since been resolved
already.

[Bug 996791] Re: Xubuntu 12.04 extremely slow login

2012-08-04 Thread Vanessa Ezekowitz
I am having the same symptoms as Mark Dammer is having, particularly
that the login/display manager takes forEVER to actually show the XFCE
desktop, and that launching Synaptic from the XFCE menu takes forever
before I receive a password prompt.

/me suppresses a number of angry comments regarding the quality of Linux
lately.

[Bug 1028737] [NEW] Thunar keeps unselecting files

2012-07-24 Thread Vanessa Ezekowitz
Public bug reported:

Thunar 1.2.3 under Xubuntu 12.04 "Precise".

Two computers are running these versions, both of which are up-to-date
as of this morning.

What happens:

When trying to select files, either with the click-and-drag "lasso"
function or by individually clicking/shift-clicking/ctrl-clicking the
files, Thunar only gives me a few seconds to get to the next action
before it un-selects all of the files. If I right-click on a file, the
file is selected and context menu that pops up is correct at first,
displaying such items as "Open with.." and "Delete", but is replaced
almost immediately with a mostly greyed-out version, and the file gets
un-selected.

Simply doing a Ctrl-A to select all files, and then taking one's hands
away from the keyboard and mouse is sufficient to trigger this bug. It
happens in any Thunar window, displaying pretty much any random file
types (that is, I see no pattern). This was happening on both machines,
but for some reason I can't identify, one of the two has since stopped
acting up, or at least wasn't when I tried to reproduce it for this bug
report.

What should happen:

It shouldn't un-select my files unless I tell it to. :-)

[Bug 948180] Re: Ubuntu 12.04 beta1: screen remains blank after screen saver (nvidia)

2012-05-26 Thread Vanessa Ezekowitz
This bug is still present in the release of Precise, and it not limited
to nVidia cards (I have an ATI Radeon HD6870 using the binary driver).
Exact same symptoms as the original reporter: computer is still alive
and running, but all I havbe when this triggers is a black screen and a
movable mouse cursor. I have to ctrl-alt-F1 and reboot to recover
(restarting X isn't enough). I run XFCE and xscreensaver, not gnome,
so clearly the problem is somewhere lower-level.

I find this happens mostly when I come back from suspend, but not always
- sometimes it happens if I just leave the computer idle and in the
screensaver for long enough.

for me also. No white windows/decorations or any other regressions that
