Hey... this thing happened to me few times back then. Kind of year ago, so please forgive me if I do not remember too much. It was not a frequent thing, however it happened enough times for me to bother you with report. I would bet It was not easily or obviously reproducible, because I would probably write something. In the meanwhile I moved to Lucid. I think, but am not sure, it stopped before the upgrade. The xserver-no-backfill ppa is now also available for Karmic. ( http://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/xserver-no-backfill ) Works with my Mobility Radeon 3650 HD pretty well.
